Hello everyone. I never expected this video to get as many views as it did. This video is almost 2 years old and my older videos are not my best work. I have learned a lot in these last couple years and achieved my doctorate degree in physical therapy. I have recently released a fry screaming exercise program, and my goal was to make it the most straightforward and comprehensive fry screaming guide available. It contains many exercises to develop all the skills needed to be successful with fry screaming, and a much better explanation of how to produce the distortion, and how the fry scream works biomechanically. Feel free to watch this video if you want to, but I would highly recommend just going to the introductory video of my fry screaming program. Thank you to everyone has supported my channel over the years.
I accidentally did false chord while trying to fry scream and it did not hurt my throat, but when I stopped I completely forgot what I did and can't do it anymore lol
You can use a low fry scream and add just enough diaphragm compression and having the right about of projection but trying to keep it voiceless at the same time will have your false cords activate and phonate similarly to your real vocal cords. To get this sound I regularly practice Tuvan throat singing and tongue and mouth placement to get the right sound I'm going for with the technique.
Maaan I wish a vid like this had been around back on the day, because this exact technique is what helped me figure out how to scream, and it's so cool that I can basically practice anywhere, while walking to or from uni in a noisy place, while driving, when I sigh, it's so versatile. I hope this video helps many, thank you so much for making it 🙏

Dude thanks for mentioning practicing in soft fry. I've been doing this a ton and really feel like it's been beneficial to me but I wasn't sure if it would actually transfer in normal volume.
Yea soft fry helps you figure out the right positioning to produce the distortion, but in order to make it loud, you have to learn to belt, and try to enter the soft fry positioning while belting.

Well, now I'm 35 and I can do the same sound but feel the erosion of my throat and sometimes even pain. Maybe it is easier to learn how to scream safely when you start from zero, but I wonder if I have to start from the beggining or there is some way to adapt my current skill to my physical actual needs. Thanks for your content!!

Fun part is dickie allen of infant annihilator in a kardovox interview mentioned the "hybrid" where you are doing fry and false chord at the same time (mind blown). Then if you think of the different areas of resonance that you usually get by thinking of different syllables (ex. I think that is how you get a sound like this: ruclips.net/user/shortsUMZ1tqojC2Q he stars out with the "ooo" but then you see his nose scrunch up a bit like people do when they get a high; I think his sinus cavity is resonating to get the "roar" sound. This is really helpful! Should you feel any sort of throat tension? I can do all this and it sounds similar but if I do it for too long my throat feels tight even though I’m breathing and pushing from my diaphragm, as well as that it sounds weak and too high on recordings even when I’m trying to make it sound low. Any advice would be amazing, thank you!!
Thank you for your very good video. I 'd like to see more! You are pushing the air from your "stomac"? How you can get your fry louder? Do you use your head voice or falsetto? I have so many questions? :))
I would say it’s more like projecting your head voice but keeping your vocal cords relaxed. Getting into the range where your voice starts to naturally break and then adding the fry. It’s a very tricky balance but feel free to email me if you have any more questions. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
The worst part is doing when i do something that seems right and is very distorted/compressed and doesn’t hurt, but it doesn’t sound that good so I have no idea if it’s completely wrong
Record yourself and listen back to it. You might be hearing it wrong so make sure you're not. If you still dont like the way isn't sounds when you listen back, you can play around with it and see what you're doing wrong or make adjustments
Haha shit can't believe I'm typing this off my own words and fingers, this video indirectly helped me realise how it should feel like in my throat. It's such a specific unusual sensation that trial and error will be needed, the catch 33 being not knowing which is the right way and needing practice to fully develop the necessary parts to engage while not messing your throat up. But thanks so much. Really underestimated how much 'diaphragm' push is actually needed, took me a good 3 years to piece it together.
yep the biggest reason why people have trouble with fry screaming is because its the first vocal style they try to learn. if you have no experience practicing singing or even FC screaming then its just not going to make sense. You wont have adequate muscle coordination or sensory awareness of what you are doing with your vocal cords in relation to what you are trying to do.
Been doing harsh vocals for almost a decade now. All kinds of false chord screaming. My channel is a good example. I truly feel my voice is different than most. I've been trying to learn fry screaming for years and I think I'm gonna accept that my voice just isn't capable of doing it. Any method of finding that placement just never work. When i do get any sort of distortion it hurts like hell. False chords came 100% naturally to me and I am self taught. I.. Just don't think fry screaming is for me. Great videos though. But man if I ever could do it, I'd be unstoppable. Oh well.
I’m actually very close to finishing a fry screaming exercise program that should be uploaded within the next week or so. I guarantee you this is going to show you the exact steps you need to find the distortion. It will have specific exercises to help you gain the skills needed to fry scream, and it will even include recorded lessons with me and multiple of my students where I guide them to find the distortion so you can see the exact process of a beginner learning to get the distortion.
Thanks for this video. Will definitely give it a try. Now there is something weird im not sure why is it, but there are days were I can actually scream really good which are... not quite often. And most days I really feel like my scream sounds weak, or I just cant keep it. Is there any advise you may have for that?
Thank you. This is an old video and I have recently made a fry screaming exercise program that blows this out of the water. I highly recommend following the exercise program, which you can find in my videos. As for your issue, I can't say for sure what is causing it without hearing how you scream. it could be due to improper technique, or it could be due to other factors like hydration, how often you practice/rest, stress, and lack of sleep. But every musician will have good days and bad days. Over time and lots of practice, you will have more good days than bad days, and your vocals will sound better on your bad days too.
@@Scream-Theory I have watched the video and it is very helpful. I still cannot get through the exercise at 11:00 in that other video or the one behind it because I have no idea what do you mean with rasp and how to produce it. Should I email you a recording?? ThankYou!!!! 👍

@@panema0 sort of. I think most people think of compression as squeezing the true chords together. But I am more talking about contracting the muscles that run through the length of the true cords.
@@panema0 if you check my channel, I recently created an entire exercise program to help develop these skills. in phase 2, I included footage of my private lessons with students where they initially figure out how to produce the distortion so that you can see a beginner going through the process.
It could be due to many reasons such as pushing more air than needed, improper technique with vocal cord positioning, living in an area with low humidity. I would need more info to properly assess. You can email me a recording if you would like to at Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com. You can also try drinking water throughout the day (not just all at once right before practicing), avoiding heavy caffeine intake (1 or 2 cups of coffee is typically fine), and doing some cardio exercise 15-20 mins a day (increasing heart rate promotes blood flow to the vocal cords and hydrates them more effectively).
yea it’s extremely hard. some people get it easily but other people need more comprehensive instructions . watch my newer fry screaming exercise program. I made it for those people that just can’t seem to get it easily
Still can't do, but found my problem. My voice just do not have this fry, i realized it long ago, my friens were talking like that just for fun, while i just sitted there and were like "wtf, where is my fry??" when I go my lowest point it's just low voice or clean air flow, I learned low falsehood and growl, high false scream, but can NOT just keep fry scream working
check out my 2023 fry tutorial. the biggest thing people get wrong is not learning how to belt, or project their voice. If you can do soft fry, thats the positioning element. Now you have to learn to project your voice, or belt, and then slip into the soft fry positioning while simultaneously keeping your true cords vibrating. The only way a fry scream becomes loud and powerful is the same way that singers make their voice sound “strong”.
@@Scream-Theory Thank you so much! I already know how to project and belt, I just have a difficulty of mixing the two together. but I will defidently check out your tutorial. I appreciate it:)
Hey man. So this is referred to as "inhale screams". There is a bit of debate on the safety of inhale screams among the metal vocals community. I personally stay away from them, because I agree with the safety concerns. Learning to properly fry scream is very difficulty but don't give up. I have a video titled "fry screaming exercises to make learning easier". I would recommend practicing those exercises for a few weeks and then attempt to produce the distortion while exhaling, after you have built up some better control over your true cords. Hope this helps.
I’ve tried this way before and I sound like some kind of wildcat in heat or like a goblin thing! I’m looking for “WAAAAAAAUGH!” type of screams, but mine are just hoarse, raspy “WAOOOW WAOOOOOOW” noises where I can’t hear that much crackling. So it either comes out like “squaaaawk” like a chicken or like a cat with a sore throat. LOL
From what you are saying, it sounds like you have figured out how to produce the distortion using the correct positioning, but you are unable to project it or make it sound powerful. This is a normal step in learning to fry scream that most people experience. To fry scream properly, you need to be able to produce the distortion sound, while simultaneously performing a shout or yell, supporting it with your airflow. The vocal cords need to be vibrating while in the fry screaming positioning. That is what makes it sound loud and powerful, because that is how the voice works. I have a video with some exercises to help with this. ruclips.net/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/видео.html
So I've been doing vocals for over 12 years now and I'm trying to go back and refine things and learn different techniques that I never properly learned. Over the years I was only able to do fry vocals as that hybrid scream mixed with false chord. So whenever I try to do the soft fry and add the little bit of tension I kinda just slip into a false chord type of sound and I don't know how to fix that..
I used to have the same issue because I initially spend two years learning FC screaming before learning fry. even till this day, I feel way more natural performing FC screams than fry screams. The way I improved it though was by not practicing FC screaming for a few weeks and only focusing on fry. eventually, when I started practicing both techniques in the same practice session, I would warm up and start with my fry screams for 15 to 20 minutes before warming up my false cords. warming up my false cords first would always make me want to naturally slip into using my FC’s even when I was trying to do fry screams.
sounds like you might be tensing up your vocal cords too much. I recently made a video called “the ultimate guide to fry screaming 2023”. you should check it out because I think it will help you visualize the correct positioning better, and get a better understanding.
Watch this video and practice these exercises for a few weeks, then take another crack at it. ruclips.net/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/видео.htmlsi=4_taHYgcT1uLQoXM
@@shunedits6155 I have a similar issue. everyone has a natural range and when I try to sing super high-pitched there comes a point where it just turns into air like you said. However I can get slightly higher than my limits by belting. When I was younger my range was higher too but I think I lost some of it with age
@@shunedits6155 what is your natural range? Mine is two whole steps lower than a bass would be. I actually have a really high head voice as well, but most days I can’t even get a single note out in my head voice.
I do agree, I find my practice is WAY better if I do a warm up, do a short short practice in the morning, rest and then do a full warm up and then do a full practice, that second practice is always way way better
HAHAHA thats one way to describe it. Feel free to email me if you would like feedback. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com Im currently working on an updated fry screaming tutorial. Most of the info will be the same in my past videos but illustrated and presented more straightforward.
I've tried to make my vocal voice super smooth and clean like a piercing sound lol, so this makes my head hurt when trying to learn to do the exact opposite.
So actually, If you are good at singing softly with very little tension in your voice, this helps a lot with fry screaming. Watch my most recent video on fry screaming and you will see why.
That can happen in some people initially when learning false cord screaming, due to turbulent air flow in the space between the false cords and the true cords. It definitely should not be happening with fry screaming. Email me a recording and I can give you feedback. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com Also check out my most recent video about fry screaming exercises and skills that will make learning easier. I think it will help you gain more control over your true cords and make this issue go away.
You need to project your voice like belting or singing with power and then try to slip into the fry positioning while simultaneously keeping your true cords vibrating. The loudness comes from your true cords vibrating how they normally would when singing with projection. Practicing soft fry like this helps you figure out the positioning in a low intensity way. Just keep in mind that soft fry typically involves a little bit more tension in the vocal cords. The transition from belting to fry screaming, will feel a little more subtle, and you shouldn’t feel as much tension in the true cords as you would when doing soft fry.
a while ago i started learning subharmonics and whenever i try to fry with any amount of air i produce a chest note and they harmonize into a subharmonic instead, how do i isolate my fry when I've already learnt something else?
spend some time practicing singing. trying to hit different notes will give you the ability to finely control your true cords. Fry screaming requires precise control over your true cords and sensory awareness of how you are positioning them. Without that level of control its going to be like stabbing in the dark.

I made this video two years ago and I’ve learned a lot more since then. The exercise program is straightforward and will show you exactly what skills you need to develop in order to fry scream.
This guy is awesome
I had a close friend walk in during your “explanation noises” fuck lmao thank you for the help
Hey I usually don't give any notice or warning in most of videos lol. Probably best to listen with headphones
This helped me lots!! Thanks
Pretty helpful! thanks!
So sound like a windy night or tv static. Got it haha.
Nice tutorial, though! Will try this out.
thank you. but honestly, this tutorial pails in comparison to the most recent fry screaming guide I uploaded. it’s a straightforward exercise program to follow and will help you develop all the skills needed to fry scream as well as a much better explanation of how to produce the distortion.
Tensed up? Tense what up and where? how?...
8:30 OMG YES! HELLFIRE BY LORNA SHORE THATS INCREDIBLE YOURE FANTASTIC IM SUBBING LOL
Love the little bit of lorna shore sprinkled into the demonstration 😂 great video mate 👍
Holy crap I finally did it. Thank you man!
check out my most recent video for more fry screaming exercises
You wont have adequate muscle coordination or sensory awareness of what you are doing with your vocal cords in relation to what you are trying to do.
actualy helped out alot!
Also if you want to email me, I am very confident I can teach you how to fry scream. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
@@Scream-Theory oh! Okay that's sounds good man! I'm looking forward to it :) thx for responding to me
Thank youuuuu! Couldn't find it properly but thank to the exercise I got the base :D
Bro your video was a game changer for me thank you so much❤️❤️
Thanks for this video.
Over time and lots of practice, you will have more good days than bad days, and your vocals will sound better on your bad days too.
my mom thought I had asma
Help! I cannot do that one noise at 3:13
I just have no idea how to apply that "Active tension" and I have tried everything!!
What do I do??
watch this video, and the part you are looking for is at seven minutes and 10 seconds ruclips.net/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/видео.htmlsi=LeJaT5Ox6hP5K9py
@@Scream-Theory Thank you!!!
I will check the video later and see how I can improve!! 😁👍👍👍
@@Bararaian no problem. Good luck. Email me a recording if you need feedback.
@@Scream-Theory I have watched the video and it is very helpful.
I still cannot get through the exercise at 11:00 in that other video or the one behind it because I have no idea what do you mean with rasp and how to produce it. Should I email you a recording??
ThankYou!!!! 👍
@@Bararaian Yes you can email me and I will give you feedback
Can we get an ASMR version of this? That would be awesome!
ill put it on the list lol
I can do like the very low Corpse Husband voice and goblin screams but not these. I'm excited to start learning!
watch my more recent fry screaming videos. They are much better. and good luck. you will get it, just have to be patient, keep practicing, and use your auditory learning
@@Scream-Theory Tyvm. I found them. I have been making instrumentals for years now it's time to put the vocals to work!
I TRIED TO GO AS LOW AS CORPSE 😭 then I tried to add tension and I just lost my voice, like, it’s not STICKING or something
I have the lows and mids but I just simply cannot get the highs down and I’ve been practicing for so long
try out some of the exercises in this video for a few weeks. ruclips.net/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/видео.htmlsi=igP3KL5Ws51gJ2Hc
you can also email me if you’re still having trouble.
what is active tension?!
mechanical load created by muscles contracting. passive tension is mechanical load created by elastic components when they are stretched
@@Scream-Theory is it basically compression?
@@panema0 sort of. I think most people think of compression as squeezing the true chords together. But I am more talking about contracting the muscles that run through the length of the true cords.
@@Scream-Theory that sort of makes sense, is there any way you could explain how exactly you do this?
@@panema0 if you check my channel, I recently created an entire exercise program to help develop these skills. in phase 2, I included footage of my private lessons with students where they initially figure out how to produce the distortion so that you can see a beginner going through the process.
Thank you man
I seem to struggle with my throat feeling dry while trying this. Any tips for that?
It could be due to many reasons such as pushing more air than needed, improper technique with vocal cord positioning, living in an area with low humidity. I would need more info to properly assess. You can email me a recording if you would like to at Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com.
You can also try drinking water throughout the day (not just all at once right before practicing), avoiding heavy caffeine intake (1 or 2 cups of coffee is typically fine), and doing some cardio exercise 15-20 mins a day (increasing heart rate promotes blood flow to the vocal cords and hydrates them more effectively).
great video!!
Dude I really try but I just can't , it doesn't comes by itself
yea it’s extremely hard. some people get it easily but other people need more comprehensive instructions . watch my newer fry screaming exercise program. I made it for those people that just can’t seem to get it easily
You sound like the wind 😃
Still can't do, but found my problem. My voice just do not have this fry, i realized it long ago, my friens were talking like that just for fun, while i just sitted there and were like "wtf, where is my fry??" when I go my lowest point it's just low voice or clean air flow, I learned low falsehood and growl, high false scream, but can NOT just keep fry scream working
Non of the video helped me understand how to fry scream. I’ll try this one out. Thanks a lot !
I cant get ittttt! I can do the fry thing perfectly but when it comes to screaming my voice wont let me
check out my 2023 fry tutorial. the biggest thing people get wrong is not learning how to belt, or project their voice.
Funny enough, this video helped me realized I can do it breathing in. For some reason, I just can’t project going out. 😅
@@Scream-Theory It still has that “untamed wild animal with a voracious appetite” kind of sound and that on its own is cool.
When I'm tightening my vocal cords the fry sound just disapers and I'm left with just breathing noise, what should I do?
sounds like you might be tensing up your vocal cords too much. I recently made a video called “the ultimate guide to fry screaming 2023”. you should check it out because I think it will help you visualize the correct positioning better, and get a better understanding.
I was following your instruction just now, suddenly i made it, and lost it in a sec
am i doing the vocal fry wrong? i feel like i cant breath or choking when doing it, but when i watch u, u seem relax
It jsut hurts my throat idk what I’m doing wrong
It clicked a bit. It's like a cat. Like a cat sound.
Yes! like a bobcat growl
I don't think I'm getting the tense part right? I just sound like my mom told me to clean my room and I got an attitude
I have a newer video that explains this better. Its called “the ultimate guide to fry screaming 2023”
this is like the fricking 20th video i have watched. i cant get the hang of it and its so frustrating.
Watch this video and practice these exercises for a few weeks, then take another crack at it. ruclips.net/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/видео.htmlsi=4_taHYgcT1uLQoXM

Bro hahaha
Everything makes more sense now 🥺
Damn I've watched so many videos all I can do is false chord screams and fry screams feel like shards of glass when I go high and my mid is sloppy
I can fry scream but I can’t sing in head voice very high anymore. My head voice used to be stronger and not airy but now it’s super airy
I notice that my head voice is harder to do when im not fully hydrated or if Ive had a lot of caffeine.
@@Scream-Theory I can’t even hit full pitches with head voice it just becomes air
@@shunedits6155 I have a similar issue. everyone has a natural range and when I try to sing super high-pitched there comes a point where it just turns into air like you said. However I can get slightly higher than my limits by belting. When I was younger my range was higher too but I think I lost some of it with age
@@Scream-Theory but all my high notes do this
@@shunedits6155 what is your natural range? Mine is two whole steps lower than a bass would be. I actually have a really high head voice as well, but most days I can’t even get a single note out in my head voice.
I wish I had seen this video weeks ago
I do agree, I find my practice is WAY better if I do a warm up, do a short short practice in the morning, rest and then do a full warm up and then do a full practice, that second practice is always way way better
I thought this was going to be about Futurama
I watched for a couple minutes and then skipped through to see when it finally sounded like Fry...derp
Seems that I've arrived at soft fry just naturally, but I can't add volume to it :\
I used to do this a lot when I was younger. didn’t know I was fry screaming.
cant do it man. just sounds like im shitting. everytime i put more breath into the fry it just turns into my normal voice but like im pushing
HAHAHA thats one way to describe it. Feel free to email me if you would like feedback. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
Im currently working on an updated fry screaming tutorial.
Ok I will check it out! TY!@@Scream-Theory

When I try this my throat tickles where I want to cough, is that normal at first? Help
That can happen in some people initially when learning false cord screaming, due to turbulent air flow in the space between the false cords and the true cords. It definitely should not be happening with fry screaming. Email me a recording and I can give you feedback. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
Also check out my most recent video about fry screaming exercises and skills that will make learning easier. I think it will help you gain more control over your true cords and make this issue go away.
Could someone tell how to close vocal chords?? I cant actually figure it out 😭
Woah I think I got it I just had to be super quiet bc it’s 1:am in the morning rn and I don’t wanna wake up my family 😭😭😭
I don’t understand someone please help me I reach only the level of lazy annoying talking and that’s it help please
I used to be able to fry scrwam as a kid
I find myself coughing a lot when I do this
Yea this trick ain't the one for me haha doing this just makes my throat tickle a bunch.
I wonder if Mikael Akerfeldt Fry screams. The lows sound like his.
Why can’t I do it!!!😣☹️
Title should be "how tp make wind gust sounds
Ok, but you're making those fry's quieter than speech. What when you want to add them to your singing?
You need to project your voice like belting or singing with power and then try to slip into the fry positioning while simultaneously keeping your true cords vibrating. The loudness comes from your true cords vibrating how they normally would when singing with projection. Practicing soft fry like this helps you figure out the positioning in a low intensity way. Just keep in mind that soft fry typically involves a little bit more tension in the vocal cords. The transition from belting to fry screaming, will feel a little more subtle, and you shouldn’t feel as much tension in the true cords as you would when doing soft fry.
i did it
Is my throat supposed to tickle a little ? 😂
GOKIL NIH PRINDAPAN
I can do the deep voice where it starts to seperate. But i can get the fry
a while ago i started learning subharmonics and whenever i try to fry with any amount of air i produce a chest note and they harmonize into a subharmonic instead, how do i isolate my fry when I've already learnt something else?
Got the fry nailed down. False chord is kicking my booty still
I STILL CANT FUCKING DO IT!!!!!
spend some time practicing singing. trying to hit different notes will give you the ability to finely control your true cords. Fry screaming requires precise control over your true cords and sensory awareness of how you are positioning them. Without that level of control its going to be like stabbing in the dark.
