Fujifilm Neopan ACROS 100 My FAVOURITE Black & White Film - First Impressions

  • Even though i have shot Fuji Acros before, that was before i had this RUclips channel, so now i managed to pick some up for a reasonable price i thought i would go out and shoot to give my first impressions.
    Inspired by Timothy Ditzler (Timothy Makeups) • DAY IN THE LIFE | Anal... i ventured out with the Pentax 6x7 to a cemetery that i pass every time i go in to Nottingham town centre. It has been somewhere i thought of going to for years but so far never have until this past weekend.
    Fuji Acros is a 100 ASA (ISO) black & white film, that is available in 35mm and medium format. You used to be able to buy it in sheet film, but Fuji in their infinite wisdom have decided to stop producing it, just as i am starting my journey into 4x5 :(
    Acros is a ultra fine grain film that captures amazing tonal range, giving deep rich black, velvety midtones and creamy highlights.
    I also have only shot this film in 120, so i have ordered some 35mm Acros along with some ilford FP4+ so i can do a film comparison, especially as i do not know the life expectancy of FujiFilm products. I want to see how close FP4 is, it terms of low grain and contrast straight out of camera.
    In another test of Acros i am going to shoot the film at varying speeds to determine how much latitude (dynamic range) this film actually has.
    Share your links, i would love to see what results people get with this film :)

    I'm not gonna lie....that cemetery is absolutely stunning! Is that weird of me to say? Ha. I really enjoyed this one...and since you sent me a roll of the Fuji Acros I've completely fallen in love with it! It's such a clean contrasty film. Very unique.
    You have my gears spinning trying to figure out a way to budget a trip overseas!

      Timothy Makeups Hey Tim, glad to hear you're thinking about going overseas to shoot, BUT, AND IT'S A BIG BUT, when I suggested that you could, maybe, do something like that in the future, you weren't to thrilled at my suggestions. AND, they were only suggestions, maybe trying to nudge you into looking at a different perspective. As I've said on numerous occasions in the past, your passion for film photography and photography in general is beyond comparison, second to none, therefore, I know that when you branch out and look with your mind, there is some amazing work that's going to come from you. I only wish I had half your passion.
      With your passion and my looks, we could make a great team. 😀😁😂.

    One of the things I miss living here in Canada is the awesome history to be found round almost every corner back in the UK. Another enjoyable video, thanks for sharing. 👍

    Awesome photos. Across was my favorite B&W film. It's so disappointing and a bummer that it's no longer available. It was a special film stock. I appreciate having the images I did make with it. I have 10 rolls (120) left and will be very selective of what I shoot with it. Thanks for the video, great job!

    Ayup Richard
    love to watch your videos especially as you're a Nottingham lad like me.
    That fuji acros is amazing, I love the results you get.
    After scanning, what post processing do you apply?
    I've just bought a epsom scanner and am going to start doing film again on my recently refurbished Yashicamat 124G.
    May the light be with you.
    Paul

    Great Images! That is a crowded cemetary. Also you're the only person I've seen holding the Pentax 67 that makes it look like a normal size slr haha

    Hello Richard
    Thanks for another great video. I also like this film but rarely use it in the daytime......for long exposures at night this film is awesome.
    Kind regards
    Chris

    download a light meter app for your phone. It works well enough in a pinch and produces very usable shots. And don't waste film taking another shot "to be safe". Trust your meter. Besides, there is enough exposure latitude in that film to recover anything you may have lost

    Totally agree this film has got to be one of the best , i shoot mine at box speed and develop in Rodinal with some great results, i would also like to recommend Ilfords Pan F a 50 asa film now the lighter days are coming also produces amazing results developed in Rodinal but you will have to use a tripod at times but worth a try , enjoy your videos keep up the good work Richard.

    Man, I really hope Fuji doesn't discontinue Acros 100, it's one of my favorites.

      It's happeneing, if not already. It's starting to get hard to find it at reasonable prices. I'm trying to find a suitable alternative but I've not found anything I like as much yet. Any ideas? The reciprocity resilience of Acros is legendary.

    I’ve never used it at 120 only 35mm, a pack of 35mm Acros is my ongoing birthday present from my oldest daughter. I think I'll ask the other daughter for a pack of 120. If the price was less prohibitive it would be my favourite and it’s one I think is suited to DD-X (grandchildren’s birthday present) instead of my usual Rodinal. Great video and images

    What's the general consensus on shooting photos of graves? Was it something that crossed your mind when you were shooting? Not sure about the UK but in Ireland I feel like some people might be bothered by it. Lovely photos nonetheless, probably some of my favourite shots you've taken! Would really enjoy taking photos of graves, just worried someone might see me and tell me to bugger off lol

      Cemetries are almost always deserted. And who's going to care about you taking a shot of an ancient grave anyway?

    • @andrewford80
      @andrewford80 5 лет назад

      I guess it could be considered problematic but personally I wouldn't care if someone photographed my grave or that of one of my loved ones either.

    For all of the chat about meter problems and scanning choices, I think the images as posted are suburb. I have meant to try/test Acros for some years, but never seemed to get to it. The continuing talk about Fuji planning to discontinue Acros defers my plan to invest the considerable time and whatever money to explore Acros now. Overall, I suspect that I would have loved it as a replacement for FP-4, which I have well tuned to my equipment and technique.

    Hey Richard, you know why this film is so expensive now, I think Fuji have discontinued it. Fujifilm are trying to kill of film. They've discontinued the superia 1600, Superia 800, and Superia 400, and this B&W film. Funny, Fujifilm is slowly trying to kill off film. Maybe they should be called Fujidigital.

    @17:10 so sad 😞 wishful hoping that this film would not be discontinued due to its great results, but alas, it is no longer produced - discontinued on a couple months after this video. RIP ACROS 2018-04-06 😭

    I am so sad that acros has been discontinued for 120... Maybe I'll get a chance to snap some up before its all gone.

      Yes it is such a shame, Acros 100 was by far the best b&w film I have shot, amazing tones and detail. I am using Ilford FP4+ at the moment, I like it on 120, but not too sure on 35mm. It does render nice tones and has surprising detail, just for me in 35mm its quite grainy for a 100 ISO film :/

      Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life l’m only shooting 35mm (HP5 primarily) right now but have a line on a Mamiya 645. I would love to get my hands on the Pentax 67ii!!

    • @RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA
      @RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA  6 лет назад

      Now that would be awesome, the Pentax 67II is supposed to be really nice, one day lol. The Mamiya 645 is a nice camera and was my first medium format camera, but have to admit having the Pentax 6x7 I always reach for that first.
      So you like gritty & grainy shots then, what is your main style/genre?

    • @AndrewUpstart
      @AndrewUpstart 6 лет назад

      Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life I am pretty new to film. I shoot mostly headshots digitally. I don’t think I could claim a style yet. Lol. I was given a Minolta x700 but just purchased a Nikon F100 (so I could use my Nikon glass) I have about 5 rolls of hp5 under my belt and 2 Kodak gold. I am going to try to develop my own rolls for the first time this weekend. Fingers crossed.

    • @RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA
      @RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA  6 лет назад

      The F100 is an awesome beast, you should be very happy with the results and the fact you can use your Nikon glass makes it even better, great buy :)
      I don't have a style either, but do love my moody b&w shots. That's cool, I am a hybrid shooter too, I don't think there is anything to be ashamed of shooting both. For me what ever medium works best or you choose at that time is the right one. Do you shoot headshots for a living? Id really like to do some, but finding it hard to break into the market here in the UK.
      Man the first time developing is a rush, when you pop off the tank lid and see your negatives that you developed yourself for the first time is AMAZING! Let me know how it goes :)

    Some nice pics. But I wouldn't waste this film on shooting buildings. I say this as someone who's taken far too many shots of dull buildings. Dull buildings are only interesting as a stage for light and subject. Without that they're, well, dull...

    • @andrewford80
      @andrewford80 5 лет назад

      What would you suggest photographing instead? Isn't everything just a stage for light in one way or another?
