  • Losing Neopan Acros 100 was a significant loss to the photographic community. It was, at the time, my favorite film, and I would argue that ten years ago Acros Neopan was very possibly the best black and white film on the market. Empirically, the Neopan stock seems to me to have had better shadow retention, though the new Acros II seems to do a bit better in the highlights. I also like the way that the new stock records warm tones versus the old. Ultimately, I would struggle to pick out which film was which from two identical shots taken on the two stocks, assuming both stocks were fresh and developed the same way. So is Acros II a good inheritor of the love people had for Neopan? Yeah, I would think it is. And Acros II is a very, very good film stock and if it is your favorite, though it is not mine, I would support your choice as well-informed, understandable, and defensible.
Wait, so Aaros II is not my favorite 100 ISO black and white film? Not even close. I still have another 100 ISO black and white film review coming out in twenty days for a film stock I like far, far more than Acros II. I would agree that Acros II does a good job of replacing Neopan. I think it fills a need which is to have film engineered by another company, even if it is not made by that company, because film shooters need choice. The problem is that there are so many good 100 ISO black and white films on the market that replacing Neopan simply is not enough. Black and white film technology has advanced in the last decade and the stocks now are better than they were then.
And, yes, someday I will rank my favorite black and white 100 ISO films for you. I don’t yet know how Acros II will line up there, but I do know that as I approached this film’s deadline I looked at the stock I had left of it - around eight rolls - and I gave them away. I knew I would have neither the time nor the desire to use them, so I gave them to a friend of my wife’s who takes lovely photos and would make much better use of the stock than I.
The simple fact is this: in the 100 ISO black and white film class, a class of films occupied by stunning examples of excellent film technology and performance, being a very good film, being better than anything that existed ten years ago, being better than many film stocks on the market today, honestly, it isn’t enough.

I really appreciate your process and presentation of your results and opinions. I’m getting back into processing my own film with various developers and find your take on the differences - sometimes subtle and other times drastic - very helpful indeed. You’re doing a lot of the testing which helps me save time and avoid wasting chemicals by using the wrong developer with certain film stocks.. so thank you! I’m looking forward to your future examinations of other films.

Thank you! These are always fun to make, too. I enjoy seeing what films can do in different chemicals and finding new chemistry combinations for them, too.

Thanks for doing this review. Your analysis and comments are always great. Having shot several 35mm rolls, I like ACROS 100 II a lot. I did do some post-scanning work in Capture One to get the contrast that I prefer.

Thank you David for such a comprehensive review. In your opinion, how do the 35mm negatives developed in Fomadon LQR compare to those developed with Acufine, Paranol and HC-110? You mentioned that Fomadon yielded very good results, so I was curious if you'd recommend this developer over the other three, or at least as a comparable option? Thank you!

Good question and I don't know that I can answer it well. My results with Acufine had promise but I messed up the mixing and that makes it hard to know for sure. I do tend to like HC-110 and Paranol S, in general.

Totally disagree with the recommendation to avoid HC110. I've developed 10 rolls in dilution B (shot at 100, 5:30 at 20c) and they all turned out fantastic. Less grain than Delta 100, exposure latitude that just keeps going, and the reciprocity into the multi minutes ranges is something I've put to use many times. I juat wish they'd make it in 4x5

Lots of factors weigh in on how a chemistry performs, too. Baseline water chemistry, mix accuracy, thermometer accuracy, and most of all aesthetic expectations are all factors that can affect developer choice.

@@DavidHancock totally, it's the main reason I just stick with just one developer. HC110 is so easy to work with, and I like that with some stocks I can get really fine grain negatives, and with other stocks I can get really gritty grain if that's what I want. Thanks for doing an the hard work of comparing them all

Could somebody give me an advice how to develop this film in Ilfotec LC 29? I used dev chart, but the result was not good as I expected?!

Go Arista ADU 100 or Foma Classic 100 - same thing, different name! You guess you will be surprised and very pleased. Something a little different from Fuji Acros II admittedly

You are 100% spot on the GREEN FILTER, is a useless filter it actually degrades the quality of the image.

I haven't yet found a use for it, which means it's probably for something like portraits under tungsten light. But yeah, some of the color filters are really kinda gimmicky.
