- One thing I love about those splitter is that you can go from horizontal splitting to vertical splitting with ease. These huge logs can’t be picked up so I stand my splitter upright and split them on the ground first.
I've split similar Ash 26x16s with my horizontal 5-ton Harbor Freight just this season. Very satisfying crunchy sound when they break open. Thanks for sharing.

I just bought the same splitter. It's a beast! I've got a huge pile ( 20'x20' and 8' tall) of giant oak rounds(24' to 38" in diameter) to split. The splitter is having no problem with any of it. I was happy to see you doing the initial splits vertical, and then finishing in horizontal mode. I've been doing the same thing. I enjoyed the video.

Hi Matt. I have the Huskee 22 ton splitter that Tractor Supply used to sell before the County Line. I had a monster white oak go down in a windstorm several years ago. The blocks measured over 40 inches across. They were too much for 2 guys to handle. Even 3 guys at one point.
I went to a local welding/fabrication shop that a friend of mine owns. He designed a bomb with a hand crank winch on it for me. It runs a steel cable out through a pulley on the end of the boom and out to a set of logging tongs that I got from Northern Tool a number of years ago. Now, I can crank those big blocks into the splitter all by myself. it is somewhat slow but I am 65... so I am too.

I have a Yardmax 35 ton half beam splitter. I concluded that splitting vertically is way too much work. You are trying to move rounds that are too big to lift, right? But you still have to get them to and onto the splitter foot. And that is work! Does it split? Yes. But I think that it is easier to cut the round with a chainsaw and and use a maul to split it. Then you can move the smaller pieces easier. Then split them horizontally. And you can do that where the large rounds already are, Instead of moving them to the splitter. Way easier!
I agree. I don’t like vertical splitting either. I think noodling is the way to go for sure!
Great video! Those are some really big rounds, but the splitter has no problems!
Next time try this put a piece of plywood down in front of you so you have a smooth surface to slide those on and then find a small piece of 2 x 4 to lay the Log on top of so you can spin it a lot easier

Love the vertical option for the monster logs. I do the same on chunks I can't lift up onto the bed. I cut my stuff to 20" lengths so they get really heavy. I'm getting free wood from a tree service to but they chunk it up for me or I cut it at their yard and load it. When I get it home it goes right on the splitter so I don't have to lift it from the ground more than once! Keep up the great work and don't forget to have fun!
Yeah 20 inch logs would be way heavy. Saving steps is always a great idea. You gotta love free wood!

The biggest I’ve split is 60 inch diameter, both black oak, and red fir. I would drop them onto the foot of the vertical splitter, after doing that I couldn’t move it until it was in quarters. The splitter would open it up at one side and only hinge on the other side. Sometimes I could complete the split on the other side with a maul, or pry it open with a cheater. Other times I had to dig under on that side and work the foot of the splitter underneath. Either way, it’d get down to quarters. Then I could move by hand to get it all split. At that diameter it was a quarter cord per 18” round. I’d do 5 rounds per trip, and come down with the splitter in the trailer completely buried with split wood.
Yeah once you go that big where it land is where it stays haha. I’ve had to split with an axle a couple times when it didn’t split the way through. Big rounds make a lot of firewood for sure!
Real nice demo! Highly recommend you check out the Gorillabac 3803 log lift option for the stuff you split. It also works on my pickup truck for loading these bigger coins.

If you have a couple 2 foot long, junk 3/4 thick boards around the house.
Lay them on the ground in front of splitter. It will keep rounds from wanting to tip forward when trying to split vertical like this...Have a great weekend!

Wrestling those big rounds to the splitter can make a person tired real fast. Lots of wood in those big rounds though 👍.
Yes, I don’t like splitting the big rounds but they make the best bundle wood because they produce so much bark less wood.
Any problems with the splitter after doing such a strenuous work for it? For such big rounds 40 ton splitter seems to be more appropriate.
No 25 Ton is all you need. It’s still going strong. More tonnage means slower the splitter cycle time.

In the situation that you show in this video don't wrestle the round flat, leave it upright and just roll it onto the foot and split it in that orientation. You don't have to split from the cut side. Also the way you are doing it to split into sizes you can pick up your adding two more manual moves of that chunk of wood you don't have to do. I never split standing up, always sitting on a round with the splitter in the vertical position.

If I’m following what you are saying, I can’t do it that way because these logs are 30 inches in diameter when the longest log I can split is 24 inches.

What keeps the splitter from falling back to the horizontal position, is there a pin to keep it from falling back??
No there’s nothing. As long as the wheels can’t roll it won’t fall back down.
I’ve split vertical over the last 24 years, it doesn’t fall back down.
Even though my splitter goes vertical, I'll just bust them with a maul. Fighting those big rounds on the ground is tough.
I tried my mal but ended up getting the mal wedged in there and had to hammer it through the rest of the way. In the end it took longer that way.
I hate running my splitter in the verticle position. I have been cutting pieces up with the chainsaw so I could pick them up, but this week my splitter for the skid steer is supposed to get here. Then I can bust the big pieces down with that and not have to lift anything heavy.
I’m jealous that would be nice to have.

There could be some mixed in there. I’ve had lot of trees piled up. I’m still learning how to tell the trees apart. Do you know a distinctive way to tell ash and tulip apart from log form?

You need to learn how to noodle a log round. Your gonna destroy your back doing all that bent over pulling and lifting
