As a little old woman (152cm, 124 pounds and 50 years) chopping wood is getting harder to do but this video has helped me to do it so much quicker and easier...thank you!!!
I save energy by just letting the axe swing into my leg.
This made me chuckle man

In Finland we glare at the wood silently. The wood, afraid we're going to speak to it, splits and runs to the woodpile.
Everytime he hit it with the axe I imagined a hitmarker

By the way, he said, "In case all you have is an axe to split wood..." So suggesting a splitting maul is not the point.
Nice method for smaller dry logs. Although a maul and a chopping block work far better for thicker pieces and wood that isn't dry. Axes are truly meant for felling trees, but work for light duty chopping.
You mean a Forest axe but there are also splitting axes that are used for splitting
@@susannschmidt6915 That's called a maul.
@@salazam A maul is heavier than a splitting axe, with a common weight being around 8 pounds. Splitting axes are lighter and more maneuverable. The key difference lies in the cheeks of the tool. Both splitting mauls and splitting axes have flared cheeks designed to split wood efficiently, while felling axes feature flatter, thinner heads optimized for horizontal cuts to fell trees.
When my axe gets stuck in wood, I usualy just take the axe with log, bring it over my head, flip it & hit it against a bigger log. Doesnt everyone do that?
+Ricards Kaupuzs I do. c:
+Ricards Kaupuzs if only you like to waste tons of energy and do very little job of splitting wood, since you will get tired easy, plus it put big stress on handle
one more little thing, we have a ton of energy so we can waste as much as we want and still not get tired ;)
+Ricards Kaupuzs seriously that's what i was thinking, and he has terrible form as he strikes the wood as well.
+PlayerOne Its pointless to split wood the way he showed, I tryed and if you miss, you still have to catch axe. Btw, if you dont want to put any effort in wood splitting(if thats how its called) then just hire someone to split the wood.
@ 1:50 if that happens, you flip over the axe and hit the log with the back of the axe. The piece of wood stil stuck on the axe will then split itself because it is forced down on the axe with its own weight.
The technique shown in this video works only with pieces that are long and thin and dont have to many side branches.
So this hack is only partially worth considering.
Or he could use more force, OR he just uses a maul

This is a very good tip. I had two large wood logs left because they were odd shape and hard to split, and I kept delaying splitting them because I knew they were difficult to split. Finally I used the tip in this video in this afternoon to split those two pieces. The tip actually works -- still hard work though because the wood fiber are twisted -- at least I could split them. Thanks for the tip.

Definitely prefer the old school log on a log technique, but yours is extremely useful for stubborn or uncured wood. Thanks for the tips!
When it's stuck vertically you keep hitting it with the log on the ax

Yeee he is only out of money 😂
it was really stressing me out watching him taking it out over and over again haha😂
I have split a lot of firewood, and I have never seen it done like this. I'm going to give this a go next time. Thanks.
I'm a convert. This method is easier than just placing a log on a block to split.
I also gave this method a try, and I am surprised by how effective it is. Plus, if you split straight through, on a block the ax can get wedged pretty good, but landing sideways in a horizontal log, it rarely got stuck. This method is especially effective on smaller logs, or second splits.
In Mexico, we spank the wood with every syllable until it splits
I can back this up

the problem is an axe is for chopping down trees. a maul is for splitting wood. it's heavier and the blade is thicker.
Ikr
THANK YOU! someone understands
+Thegameifyer No, nobody understands, the entire point of the video is if you have an axe. If you don't have a maul, and you just have an axe, this is how you split the wood. Answering "how to split wood with an axe" with "get a better tool" is retarded.
+LIBERTY PRIME Why dont you try and split the wood by using a pocket knife instead by that logic. He's chopping baby sized pieces of wood with an axe... try doing this same job with normal sized logs and above and its a huge waste of time. Simply, go to the hardware store, buy a 'log-splitter' or a 'maul', ($10 bucks?), and get the job done in half the time without looking like a pussy.
+Jeremy Orchard and for stomps use a sledgehammer and wedges, I actually split wood so I know. My family doesnt use oil for warmth in the winter we use fire wood
I just learned something from Crazy Russian I'll be damned it works I was sketchy about the oak I was splitting but it works thanks Guy
Whats the largest diameter you think it will work with
@@davidbailey2793 I've been using the combination of wood splitting ever since I learned that from him okay you can go about 9 inches if it's about a foot and a half long if it's Pine you can do about 14 in a foot and a half long

Bartosz N I wasn't doing it at all...
I guess it is better for the one hit wonders, but if you need to smack it again there is the extra step of removal.
Also it will work better if you wedge the support log and chop a notch into it so the top logs don't roll.
So at my family cabin, we chop wood with a 10lb wood splitter and a 35ish pound sledge hammer. Made from an old car axle with a hammer top welded on top of it.
We kept breaking our sledge hammers with a wood handle....
We are also splitting tree logs a bit larger that the ones you had so your technique wouldn't work for us.
But for our smaller logs this would be perfect. Save us some energy this will.
Thanks for the tip.

I been splitting my camp fire wood that way for past few years!! Works great especially with a small forest axe. Thanks for showing!!
but what about if you actually have a splitting maul?
well...
+Bladez Andrew Then you have four times the chance of missing using the regular method. I dislike them a lot. Get a splitting axe - those shaped more like a plow.
This new method however is questionable - I want to see him try something with some size to it.
+Bladez Andrew I've used an ax, wedges and a maul. I prefer the maul.
+wildonemeister I split do firewood for a living. splitting 2-4 bush cord a day. this technique is good, however, hitting the log like that does damage to the wrists over a long period of time. I use this style but from the other side where I'm burying the axe into the dirt. it's good for anything up to 12" across. anything beyond 12" your best just to hit the holding wood ( the outer 3") normally 1-3 good swings will pop anything up to 30" across. anything past that I would drive a wedge into one side and use the axe on the direct opposite.
Justin Maizis Your firewood measurements does not compute in my part of the world - how much is 3 bush cords in liters? The math trying to figure out your funky measurements gave me a headache :P I might not have the best splitting maul, but my axe is top notch and I'd pick it over the maul any day. I personally split large pieces once or twice with my electric splitter and then use the axe on the rest to make things go faster. Can you sir answer me what kind of moisture content the US/Canada has as a minimum to sell the firewood? I've read 30% somewhere and in my part of the world it's 20% (which is of course way better in all aspects).
You sound very tired out.... My wife enjoys playing with my wood and gets exausted

he's still using an axe wrong, you start with one hand at the bottom and one hand closer to the axe head and as you come down you slide your top hand down to the bottom one.
I was thinking this too, I saw other videos and stuff of people holding it like you said and when I watched this I was thinking "Is that even the right way to hold it?" Because the way he uses it, it looks kind of weird

That's good for smaller logs where missing the log is more likely [most of what I chop fits that category]. The traditional chopping block is probably still better for big piece of wood.

Great video! I've never split wood, but at least I'll always remember how to do it right.
Thanks for the tutorial...I've done it wrong all my life...but I'm more fit now.
you are also using small pieces of wood. When you use much wider trees and bigger knottier chunks of wood, vertical with a maul and sometimes a wedge is how I do it. The way you swing the axe looks more exausting too and it looks pretty light, but that could be because I'm used to the mauls where you need the momentum.
Actually both methods are good, depends on what kind of logs you're trying to split. Large (thick) logs are easier to split vertically one on top of another, thinner logs or branches go easier on the side as you've demonstrated. Also a proper splitting axe helps, the one you're using is definitely not suited for this job, the blade is shaped more like a cutting (felling) axe but I suspect it's actually one of those cheap Chinese "general purpose" axes that I wouldn't count on for any serious logging.
Does the handle length matter for splitting wood?
if you knew how to use an axe when splitting wood you wouldn't have a problem.
BigMan7o0 or if his axe was actually sharp
Dude, great video! I split firewood for my job, everything you said about the annoyances of splitting wood vertically is true :) great trick! most of the time now though I use a hydraulic splitter attached to a 25 year old Manitou telehandler (telescopic forklift tractor thing). whenever I use the axe though I'll be using this technique from now on
hendrixphish420 we made some brackets to pick the splitter up with bucket. Once split you drop the word one the bucket, easy done. Just need to be careful though yellow box and iron bark can sometimes explode rather than split!
currently suggesting this for a standard safety training video in my society- we're medieval reenactors so chop wood at shows. Thanks man! you're awesome
this was kinda satisfying to watch
You must make the "boom" sound affect every time you hit it. If you don't the wood will not split.
Someone watched too much Emeril.
I don't know what I wood have done without this
Stop with the puns already
I wish I could find wood that dry in Texas man.
ok your splitting the wood right but your swinging the ax wrong, don't lift with your back, bring the ax behind your body with a hand at the base and a hand at the top/center when the ax is above you mid way through the swing, slide your hand down to the base for more power and acceleration due to the fulcrum
Could u make a video?
with most hand tools its all about letting the tool and gravity (in this case) do the work for you. just like a hammer or a pick.
+Duncan Gilbert that's exactly right but this guy is making it way harder on himself and could even injur himself.
I feel like a longer handle would help because it's so close to the ground
or you can just go and buy a splitting maul?
MrSlacker82 As someone with the body and strength of your average IT guy, Swinging a maul is very difficult and usually results in the same exact issues as splitting with an axe, only it's heavier so it's more difficult to stop it. (Yes I know I'm a wimp, I don't really care, I know multiple people who have years of experience splitting wood and they all have horror stories of people splitting their shins and cutting off toes, Not somethin I'm willing to risk when there are easier and safer ways to do something.)
A splitting maul also known as a block buster, block splitter, sledge axe, or go-devil is a heavy, long-handled axe used for splitting a piece of wood along its grain. One side of its head is like a sledgehammer, and the other side is like an axe.
I don't have an axe, just came to support the channel :)
