I just pulled the trigger on this laptop (4k, 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, max spec AMD CPU and GPU), the selling point over others in this spec range was def the price point, I got it for under $1800 with discount codes - and the keyboard. Can't wait to get it. I have a HUGE Gaming desktop that doesn't really work for my new office setup (my legs bump into it) that I'll repurpose for something else (I think a Plex streaming box, and video encoding server for Twitch/RUclips stuff I like to do) - but this is going to be great for video editing, photoshop, lightroom, and of course GAMES :)
@@ShannonMorse Yeah I was stoked. It was like $500 off from Dell, and two coupon codes dropped it another $350 - So basically $850 off, had to do it :)
@@gripp9k They are gonna sell a bunch of these at those prices. I found good coupons as well and picked it up for 1800+ after taxes. It’s not the fastest, but I think it should be an excellent value. Will probably get better as drivers get improve as well.
I ordered this exact spec about 2 weeks ago from their website. It was originally priced around 2200, got it for 1100. I jumped on the deal after waiting months for the right sale. So glad I waited
Just got one for a gift the one I have is Alienware m17 R5 Gaming laptop: 17.3" 360Hz FHD IPS, Ryzen 9 6900HX, RX 6850M XT 32GB DDR5 4800Hz, 1 TB. M.2 SSD. Played on Steam years ago probably a decade ago off an old mac pro. But for casual gaming like Borderlands and such this may be an excellent experience for casual gaming. Was going with an MSI but they didn't have it so I looked at this, really liked this one.
I just ordered one of these today, but with nVidia graphics and a Ryzen 7. This'll be the first Alienware I've had in a while and I'm totally looking forward to having it as my mobile workstation.
How's your experience with the Nvidia and AMD versions? I have one with a 3070ti and a Ryzen 9 6900hx-it's pretty powerful for gaming, but I found it lacking in CS2 and COD. Also, the processor gets really hot.
Yes you can see it in the photo! My screen on time was about 7 hours once it died. That's pretty awesome tbh. I can't tell you how many years I've had to edit a video at a convention and a battery will die on me way too fast. It's a beast.
I just bought this bad boy a few hours ago and got a great deal on this 4k version 120hz, 32 gb ram, 1 tb ssd for 1845 🙃🙃 thanks to 2 stackable coupons ign gave out. I'm very curious to see how it will match up against my desktop that's running an intel i7 12700kf and a Nvidia 3070 8gb card. I'm using DaVinci resolve studio 18 on my desktop for my drone edits, can't wait! Great review!
You are not the only one that appreciates the clickity-clackity sound from a mechanical keyboard (I turned my volume up at that part). Dating myself, but I still remember using the old IBM Model M keyboard as my first experience with mechanical switch keyboards. When using something like Premiere, do you notice if it utilizes the GPU still, or do you have to assign it/switch to it?
It does all the switching automatically so I don't even notice it. So whether I'm rendering to export or scrubbing through 4k hdr files, it's all fluid. One thing I didn't mention was I noticed this laptop scrubs through a timeline in premiere way smoother than my desktop tower which I built in 2020. It's impressive.
Awesome review! This is my next laptop! I bought the x15 r1 and loved it but I want a bigger screen, longer battery life and the mechanical keyboard and I’m giving my x15 to my wife because she prefers the 15 inch.
I have heard there is a world of difference between the M17 and X15 - other than the extra two inches of size - the material in X15 is superior and more enjoyable (relatively speaking) if you prefer the feel of the outercase. That said, size matters IMO and would take the bigger Laptop Screen.
Did your test model have the UHD 3840x2160, 120Hz display? Trying to figure out which version does the windows hello since there is no finger print reader, which is odd for this high-end machine.
I think Alienware should really move to USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gpbs) for its Type-A ports. The model in this video still uses Gen 1 (only 5 Gbps) which is an odd choice considering that most of its competition that I've seen have already moved to Gen 2.
I've already bought this prior to seeing this but you said I can put 64 gig of ram however from research I've done, you can install 64 but it will only ever run 32. I wish I could get a solid answer on this before I upgrade my ram from 16gig.
how u made the f7 have 2 tone lighting/dim action? mine m15 r6 have only f7 as on / off !!!! mine isnt full rgb keyboard, only 4 zones. but in the software i can dim it to any level. am i missing something in the alienware command center? 1 more question. didnt u had the 14inch alienware. after 3 months of use of ur 17. are u missing the smaller size?
Great review as always. I appreciate the your covering the power supply, which I feel many overlook. Do you guys think they will be doing an X series with AMD also? After seing the new form factor from that series, Dell has gone back on my "to check out" list.
Good, positive video. Do you have any gaming data or graphs you could share to compare this laptop with a comparably priced intel + nvidia option? I feel as though battery life could be better but gaming performance a little behind, especially if you value raytracing.
great video but I personally think that Alienware is too overpriced. I got a Asus ROG laptop, it came preinstalled with ( I think) Ubuntu or Linux Mint and I only paid like 1480€ for a version with Ryzen 9 5gen CPU, RTX 3070ti and 32gb RAM. However, since I'm more of an Arch user, I installed Manjaro, MacOS KVM and Windows 10 Lite KVM from my trusted source of modified/improved Winbloat iso's. When it comes to Linux support, I had problems with Nvidia drivers on Manjaro but stuff like RGB and WiFi card just worked out of the box
Sounds like a beefy computer. My only concern is the Windows vulnarable services and netbios over tcp ip aka external portable drive mounting for data exfiltration. Without paying for third party AV software. What would you do to combat potential drive by attacks, invalid linkers and CIDIR related attacks.
Nope. Nice review but not useful for me. Where are the programable keys? I have an Alienware M17 R5 from 3 years ago and I have programable keys on it. I use the keys in gaming. Also missing the number keys.
If you plan on modding Skyrim this ain’t for you. I bought this my first AMD and am truly disappointed. Vanilla Skyrim with only an ENB won’t hit 20fps. My NVIDIA 3060 would run it 400mods including ENB at over 60fps. Done sent it back to Alienware and they confirmed it’s running as it should.
If I'm paying $3K or over for a gaming laptop that doesn't even have an SD card slot (mini or full size) then I'm going to buy from another brand. All that space and it's over 7lbs and not even extra USB-C slots, media slots for media content and other heavy weight tasks which require me to offload SD cards from my digital camera is a fail.
First video I've watched of yours, Got to say, you really do it well. Great video.
Thank you! I rarely get a chance to do laptop reviews but they're some of my favs.

where to get discount codes from? Thanks.

It doesn't have the USB4 support (despite haven't the 6000 series Apu in the laptop) ?
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your video. Blessings on your day.

Yeah she had the 4K version
How can you use the computer to play your switch on?
Is it good for software development? Starting price is a very reasonable $1299. Is 1080p good enough for Coding?
I think Alienware should really move to USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gpbs) for its Type-A ports. The model in this video still uses Gen 1 (only 5 Gbps) which is an odd choice considering that most of its competition that I've seen have already moved to Gen 2.
Does it have a kill switch for the webcam, or can it fit a stick-on webcam cover? The bezel looks thin for the covers I've used in the past.
with a 720p cam don't worry - no one will be able to make out your video on the other side
Just wondering, now that you've owned it awhile, do you still like it ?

I had to send this one back so I'm now using my 14 inch one again! Unsure why yours is acting differently when using f7.

there is 240 alienware logo power supply is available to buy. its way smaller and lighter. mine didnt got with it as well.
What’s it made out of? I have an x15 love the aluminum its made out of, but the m version looks plastic Is it plastic?

Unfortunately I don't have access to the Intel version to do a comparison for you!
There is something like this for 2024?
What about the screen brightness?
Around 360 nits. Not good.
Love your reviews
I am hoping to get a one-of-a-kind ergonomic gaming laptop from Ergotauri. That is a super cool review, still.
Does this laptop, have RSR? I know it has FSR. But does it have RSR?
If the Ethernet isn't 2.5 Gbps I'd prefer to see another USB-C port instead.
