- In this video we compare the X17r2 against the new M17r5. We have tried to spec both these laptops as close as possible with each having a 3070ti, 16gb ddr5 and 1tb gen 4 ssd. How does the Ryzen 9 6900hx compare against Intels 12th gen i7?

Great Video!! Im still debating on which one to get, both are really good for me the onlything that kinda matters is the price, the maxed out version of m17 is about 3700 while the x17 is like 4900
Thank you so much for this and your previous reviews, I love the concise and comprehensive no nonsense format. I bought the 4K, i9 3080ti X17 R2 and love it so far. Anyone's opinions on the optimal (though I appreciate it varies) OC settings would be appreciated after the loss of one of my favourite owners forums. That or any recommended forums anyone knows of.
Also I'm a big fan of the improvements of the RAM CAS latency or Speed so look forward to higher speeds on top of the HyperX CL 38 as opposed to the stock CL40 which doesn't quite imo warrant purchasing as an upgrade alone. What are your thoughts?
Regardless again thanks so much for the amazing and highly informative reviews.
Hi Daniel, yes it is a shame about the forum but most of us are over on Reddit now and I am usually answering alienware questions there. I didn't have much luck overclocking the i9 yet but I am hoping once throttlestop has more support for mobile 12th gen I may get some better results. Also better ram would be amazing, the joys of being an early adopter means we have to keep waiting until DDR5 matures :(
Great test especially the heat sensor gun - very thorough! I already own two I9's now I've got an X17 R2 I9-12900HK on order. The word "hot" is an understatement, however the I9's do run almost flawlessly, regardless of temperature. My hands do get warm which is nice come winter, at other times not so much. All in all I love these machines, the design philosophy, the design and the engineering, because of course why else would I own three ... but, I didn't pay full retail (and neither should you). The magic words, "open box".
thank you mate, I have never in my life paid full price for a dell :) I obviously can't wait for an open box as I need them on launch for review but by the time I have stacked a few codes I usually knock about 30% off the price
I have been waiting for a video comparison between these two laptops so I can decide which to go with. I have always been a dark color guy not a white color person so knowing that I also like the intel with nvidia versus amd with nvidia and much rather amd on both cpu and graphics. great video. keep up the good work.
The M17 is a much better sell in the US where I snagged mine for $400 cheaper, I agree that the materials feel cheap but the thicker, more proven design seems like a pretty big long term pro. Either way, the X17 was sold out here lol
hows your m17? is it worth to buy? I am also looking into this
Thank you for this comparison! Please keep them coming. You said you'd rather keep the x17, what specs will go for if you brought one for personal use?
I have had 6 different configs in for testing and review and the one I kept was the 4k, 12700h, 3070ti version. It offers the best all round performance to $.
Another great video, thanks! Keep up the good work!
Thank you 👍
Thanks for all your hard work on this review. Looking forward to the msi ge76 review and or match up to the x17r2 12th gen. I am really curious if the ge 76 upgraded the speakers from the 11th gen. In your unboxing it sounded like u were super impressed with the speakers. For justins 11th gen comparison it sounded like it was a toss up between x17r1 and raider ge76 11 gen. Since the x17r1 and r2 have really bad speakers, it sounds like the ge76 12th gen had a serious upgrade from its 11th gen speakers.
I didn't try the 11th gen GE76 but these 12th gen speakers are seriously impressive. I will obviously compare the two soon but the speakers will be a clear win for the GE76 👍
@@MashITTech Yes they do sound incredable for laptop speakers. I dont have any modern day laptop to compare it to. They are not as good as my logitec z625 desktop speakers but no laptop is going to compete with those.
@@danielm5774 ge76 speaker < gẹ75 speaker. I have both because ge75 has subwoofers while ge76 only has woofers
I wonder if dell is going to add the HX processors to the X17.. This is what the new Legion 7I will be using.. a processor with as many P cores and E cores and threads as the 12900HK desktop processor! Hanging out for the new 7i!
Thank you so much. I am currently looking at both of these laptops and a search brought me to you 🎉 After watching this vid and your past related vids, I believe I have decided which would be best for my needs. The X17 R2 shall soon be mine (after I do some searching for a coupon 😊) You have a new subscriber 👍
Thank you mate, glad it helped. Where are you? if you are in the UK I can usually help with coupons
@@MashITTech I’m in the great northwest of the USA. In the Seattle area.
ah sorry, my codes won't work for you :(
@@MashITTech Just wanted to follow up and brag that I ordered the X17 R2! The Dell website gave me $680 dollars off and I found a coupon for an additional 5% off of a $3,579.99 build! (i9, RTX 3080, 32 GB DDR5, 1 TB HD, UHD display!) $825 total savings! Thanks again for the vids 😊
5:57 wait until they hear about the razerblade 18 lmao
as long as there's full size arrow keys, I'm happy
The last video (Legion 7 vs X17) I saw of yours made me get a good idea of how a 16 inch (16:10) screen compares with a 17.3 (16:8 ratio), as I have been considering both for my upcoming purchase.
You once again helped by giving an idea of how good/bad M17 is. I have got an option for an M17 R5 with 3070Ti, but not sure how 1080p will look. Although I think/hope it'll be good as it'll still be a 127 PPI in comparison to a common 27 inch gaming display with QHD which will have a PPI of 109 (but definitely watching distance between the two will be different). What would you say about this?
Also the TimeSpy result being almost a thousand lesser, do you think the M17 has full powered 3070Ti? Thank you.
Thanks for the review, Dave. Your other video(s) helped me make my purchase decision!
My x17 R2 arrived recently and I love it so far, except for one thing. The touchpad appears to be faulty. It's very much like the issue with some of the XPS laptops where the touchpad is loose and rattling along the bottom area. Going to contact Dell to request an exchange.
Does anyone else have this issue, or did I just get unlucky?
Oh man, sorry to hear about that! I have had 7 X17/x15/x14's this year and not one exhibited any loose or rattling behaviour! I do check for it too as I had it in a couple of XPS and even did an XPS trackpad fix video
Thanks. Let's just hope it's hassle free.
Annoyingly when you log in, there's a 'return' option but no 'exchange', which might risk not being able to get the same good discount I had before.
@@MogsterKupo I actually had a similar issue with my X17 R2. The problem was that despite the touchpad being screwed into place, it did not sit flush with the keyboard facia on the bottom right corner and thus was loose but only on that side. I had to remove the underside cover and battery which revealed that the touchpad only had 2 of its 4 mounting screws. So, the fixes were to grind down the touchpad standoffs square to lower the angle towards the right to favor the left side, bending the metal tab of the touchpad (which acts as the spring) so that when mounted into place, the pad puts greater upward pressure against the underside of the keyboard facia to stay stable, and lastly re-tapping all 4 standoffs for larger spec screws. It was a lot of tedious work for a "premium" machine. The concerning bit was that there were a lot of stripped screws from the factory. Suffice to say, I no longer have the machine but it does make me wonder what else may have been lurking under the surface. Hope this helps and that you get yours squared away,
Thanks for sharing that! Nice to know there are fixes. But as you say, for a device of this price, it shouldn't even be a thing.
Yes, one of the screws on the cover of mine were stripped. I actually thought I was going a bit mad but I've worked on my car too much to not know what stripped threads feel like.
Mine M17R3. If i press touchboard the left side, it will be difficult to rebound unless I press the lower right side to recover. It seems that Alienware still not up to the level of workmanship that should be at this price. I'm also worried about whether the fan vibration problem has been solved in this generation of products, it sucks in mine.
May I ask, is the m17 made of plastic? I might get my kid the m17 r5 as I much prefer the RYZEN chips for better temps and battery, but if the build quality is not like the x17, then I might really need to get the x17.
Also, performance shouldn’t matter as much as I am sure both are plenty fast for his use case.
Is the x17 made of metal and a better coating, compared to m17? What are the differences, chassis wise? Sorry for the question, I cannot find a Dell store with Alienware demo units on display in my area
the m17 has a lot more plastics than the X17 and does feel a lot cheaper. Both have a magnesium shell but where as the X17 is full metal with powder coating giving an incredibly dense feel, the m17 has a much more plastic feel to some of the outer panels. I am sure both would last a fair few years but I much prefer the feel of the x17.
Both perform amazingly for games and the X17 is a bit better than the m17 for productivity tasks
@@MashITTech I see. I wish both had the same build as the Ryzen chip would have been better. Thanks so much for the detailed build comparison
You should revisit this comparison now that the M17 officially has the AMD Advantage version or whatever it's called with the 6900HX and 6850M combo!
Yeah that’s a great idea. Currently got loads of new laptops in the studio but once I get through them I will order the advantage edition
@@MashITTech I think I'm going to return my X17 and go for the new Advantage Edition. I expect the performance of the 6900HX + 6850M will be equal to my 12700H + 3080ti, but the thermals I expect to be significantly better. Not only because it's AMD, but also because the M17 chassis seems to manage heat a lot better than the X17. What's interesting is that the 4K panels don't seem to be the exact same screen. The X17 shows a 4ms response time while the M17 R5 shows a 3ms response time. Maybe it's a newer/better version of their 4K screen?
I expect it’s the same panel but dell marketing screwing up the listings as usual. If you get one let me know the ID and I will compare with mine. I don’t think the cooling is better on the m17 but it’s just much more efficient, the 12th gens run at well over 100w where as the 6900hx was about 70w that’s a lot of extra heat to deal with. Also although my m17r5 had amazing temps (6900hz and 3070ti) others I have seen with the advantage edition have run a lot hotter at nearer 100c though that’s still better than 12th gen 😂
@@MashITTech Yeah, I think the larger chassis just helps a little bit and the AMD tech will run cooler. Some reviews I saw said that under maximum load their CPU and GPU never got even over 88C which is pretty insane compared to my X17 that will literally burn my fingers!
@@MashITTech I also saw in a review their Advantage Edition idling at 31C!! My X17 idles at 51C...
Now that the prices have dipped quite a bit for these two laptops would you recommend the M17? For example if I'm looking at the Dell outlet for the same 3070ti builds between the X17 R2 and M17 R5, the X17 is about $2250 and the M17 is around $1700. I only use my laptop for gaming, but I'm having a hard time deciding. Or should I just go with the X17 R1 at around $1700 as well with the 11800H and 3070....
Just ordered an x17 r2 with similar specs from Dell after watching all of your content, didn't realize how long of a wait there would be have you had any issues with shipping on any of your items?
I ordered mine back in March (on launch) and didn't receive until it mid-May- the shut downs are greatly affecting all companies orders. The shipping was a little weird in that suddenly it just showed up, whereas the website didn't even get a chance to provide tracking, but it could be because I bought it with the Horizon pack.. which still hasn't shipped either ;) It was worth the wait. I have a ROG Strix Scar 17 which is awesome as well, but the build quality on the X17R2 is stellar.. both get about the same battery life.
@@DustinHoye dope my just just went into thr production stage like an hour ago im pretty pumped!! Thanks for the response
I have ordered about 8 Alienwares this year and most were here within a month. I did have one which was dallied due t a part shortage 👍
Awesome video! I just received the same spec'd M17 R5 and was wondering if you had any issues with sporadic fps dropping while gaming? Temps are showing good on my laptop and I am using the 240w power brick that came with it but have notice while playing 7 days to die and Ark survival that I get random fps drops. 70 to 100s are normal then 30 to 40s for couple seconds then back to normal. Overall I am loving the performance but the random drops mKe me wonder if something is wrong.
My gaming was flawless on my machine and it had some of the best temps of any recent gaming laptops. I also experienced no drops in FPS. I did a gameplay video a while ago, you can check out some of the footage there: ruclips.net/video/9v0WZeamZms/видео.html
for me, after using 4k screen for awhile it is now difficult to do anything specially work on a 1080 screen.
can you clarify please? does that mean it is more difficult to work on 1080p or 4k due to small text size and having to increase scale?
Great video as always! Any idea when the Nvidia 4000 series gpus will be dropping into laptops? X17R2 for me ;) Upgrading from an old 15m R1.
Thank you. And I would expect Q2 next year for laptop 4000 series, they are already talking about delaying the dekstop 4000s due to the glut of 3000 series (which serves them right for profiteering whist miners where buying them)
@@MashITTech I agree 100%, now we let them feel the pain :)
What do you think of the previous x17 r1 vs the m17 r5? i9-1150hk vs Ryzen 9 6900hx?
Well the 6900hx is slightly better than the 11800h but I still prefer the X17r1 chassis so would still buy that one. Plus I would get the 3080 with the lit touchpad too :)
@@MashITTech Thanks for the tip. My wife got the m17 r5 AMD and I am having my m17 r3 replaced under warranty. She is having problems with hers though - Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost, and "The exception unknown software exception 0x000fdead occurred in the application". She is getting quite angry about it because all the fixes we have found haven't solved it. She joked she was going to swap hers with mine.

Nice thanks for doing this.
Great as always 👌🏻
Thank you so much 😀
Great in depth review.
Thank you 👍
Seeing the thickness of the M17 R5, I would imaging Alienware could could do a pretty good job bringing back a slimmer Area 51 with quad fans. Area 51 X if you will. Just something I would like to see
thank you . im exciting because am getting the x17 r2 4k 12700 rtx 3070 ti today after 25 days waiting . i hope it will b worth 3000 dollars i paid
Wow congrats. Let me know how you get on with it
@@MashITTech thanks bro for the recommendation the laptop has the best screen and keyboard i ever seen they are amazing im in love with them. I have some issues, the i/o ports are so close to the ventilation system so when it is hot it becomes so sensitive, my wireless usb mouse receiver stopped working sometimes but maybe my mouse is not that good . And there is a little fan whistle specially in the quite mode. the last issue is the heat outside the machine, it gets warm , definitely you need a cooler pad if you use it a lot. Im so confused do you have any solutions for the fan whistle?
For people that want the x17 r2 but are a bit crazy about high temps any way to under volt or change profile settings for it to lower temps and increase battery life?
That's the only thing keeping me on the fence between models
Hi Chris, yes a lot of people have concerns for the temps. Let me look into it and try and make a video improving the temperatures
Do u have any other laptops systems with a RTX 3080ti?
Hello sir, could you please make an in depth gaming review of the 3070ti? I’d really like to see it. Thank you for this review.
I am actually currently working on a m17r5 gaming video which uses the 3070ti and that should be out soon. I do plan to try and do a gaming video for each model if I can find there time
@@MashITTech okay, thank you for all the effort you put into these videos.
Wait for the Advantage edition !
Yeah, they have just listed the 6700m version in the UK but the pricing is even more of a joke than the Nvidia pricing!!! they want £500 more for the 6700m than the 3060 and as far as I am aware the 3060 is slightly faster. WTF Dell!!!
@@MashITTech Dell marketing dumb style.
My r5 is a hot throttling mess. Wish I knew what you’re talking about. My x17 on the other hand runs nice n cool.
What spec m17r5 did you get? Mine was amazingly cool, the best temps on a gaming laptop this year then last month I got hold of an all amd version and it was so bad I couldn’t even get a review out of it 🥲
Dell has been on empty with the X 17 R one for months , do you think eventually they’ll bring it back?
I don't think the r1 will be back now, they will just be selling the r2
Given the great performance of the Intel, does this mean that the ryzen 6900hx is not really powerful but just gives the right thing for the m17 r2?
The 6900hx is still an amazing chip and will play any game out there without issue, it also runs a lot cooler than the intel. It is just that the 12th gen intel had a massive boost in performance this year. unless you know you really need that extra cpu performance ryzen is still a great choice
I need to contact you for an experiment for my Alienware laptop, how may I contact you?
Can you add me on Instagram or Reddit?
Ok can you send me a link for that, thank you
M17 for the thermals.
I would go for the m17 R5 (in fact, i'm thinking about buying it with Black Friday sales). I do like the I/O and the Intel CPU on the X17 R2, but the dealbreaker for me is that the X17 R2 doesn't have an option for a QHD screen with G-Sync and the M17 R5 does (atleast in my country, in the US and UK they do offer QHD screens with G-Sync on the X17.. What the hell Dell?) Also I don't really like the white color, why is the X17 R2 not available in Dark side of the moon??
do you have a QHD option at all or is it just lacking gsync? I ask because Dell's website is notoriously inaccurate 🤣
@@MashITTech There is a QHD option, but it is lacking G-Sync. I might have a chat with Dell support about that :P Also give me the X17 in Dark!
I will also check with my alienware contacts for you. Yeah I miss the days you could choose the colour, in fact I used to love the metallic red best 😀
@@MashITTech you will? Thank you so much!
So, I had a chat with Dell support, and the QHD screen on the x17 is G-Sync enabled, only it is not displayed on the site. I also alsked if I could have the x17 in Dark Side of the Moon, but no dice 😅
ah yes, another laptop review showcasing laptop's performance in very demanding modern games like dota 2, apex legends. for a bingo there should be also CS and gta 5
I was very tempted to push it really hard with solitaire but I get your point 😀
@@MashITTech 😂
I don’t know much about PCs but I just purchased the m17r5 because I thought it had better options for UHD, it definitely had the option for more memory and hard drive . Options seemed limited on the x17r2 . Hope i picked the right options , I essentially made it as expensive as possible $3,400. Thanks for the video.
I have the m17 r5 amd, 6900hx 6850m xt 360hz panel. My one gripe is win11. Coming from a stripped win10, anytime drivers are updated you have to manually go in and make sure it didn’t update any drivers from Alienware. Other than that, it’s a beast! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
I mean, the X17 is just aesthetically pleasing with a very small thermal boost due to quad fans (but it’s thinner chassis makes heat dissipation more concentrated). I’ve seen and used both. If it’s something that sits on your desk, and move with it in a laptop bag, the M17 is an amazing value. Just don’t expect to turn heads in a meeting. Honestly just get a MacBook for that
I was just looking at the same thing the r2 is more with more gb
Love my X17 R2. Excited to see the laptop 4000 series GPUs hit early next year
You’re the sole reason I went ahead and bought the x17 r2, feels great man. Thanks. The whole YT is full of shitting on alienware system while it is one of the better machines
Yeah I am not sure why they get so much hate on the laptops. The desktops I can understand but the laptops are great!
@@MashITTech ive had both their laptop and currently still have my desktop r12 with 3080 and i9 and it hasn't had any problems either. Super smooth 4k gaming and not really loud. Albeit I added one more fan just because the room was there to add it. Plus I got it for 2300 usd in early 2021 when gpu prices we 2k for a 3080.plus dells customer support is still fantastic. I'm a currently on the fence and might pull the trigger on the new 2022 legion 7i or 7(amd) because the performance is supposed to be amazing and uses the new i712800hx chip. I can't wait for you to get your hands to do a full review of that and the new slim version. The slim offers a mini led screen and it's 1600p so not to rough on the resolution as 4k but perfect for a 16inch screen.
@@MashITTech is the x17 r2 VrReady?
it sucks they removed the numberpad on m17
Thank you for this comparison. It was extremely valuable to me.
Especially comparing actual builds (3070ti) I would want to buy vs over the top builds most others review.
Yeah I try and cover a few different configurations. Most reviewers are given machines by the manufacturers and they obviously give them the most powerful model to show it off. I buy all my review units so can choose the specs I think will be the best bang for the buck
The M17 R5 is an incredible machine. I own one. The video card shutting off when not using it is incredible. Generates no heat. Runs for 6 hours on battery. Of course I paid $1,100 for mine with a 4k screen, 2tb hard drive, and 32gb of ram (with Radeon 12gb option).
wow! that is a mental price! The biggest gripe I had on release was the price as it was as much as the X17! but at that price it is easily a bargain
@@MashITTech yeah that was the only reason I did it. I saw the x17s on Black Friday for about $2400 but they only had a single configuration with 1tb and no cherry keyboard with the 4K screen.
@Gamer works great. Just make sure to turn off windows 11 bull shit that disabled all the cores when on battery except one. That makes it run really choppy on battery.
Damn I bought it right now for 1250 usd with an fhd screen 480 hz display with 3070ti and an r9 6900hx with 1tb and 16 gigs of ram, kind of a downgrade from you but Its still good for that price
Thank you for this comparison review! Been looking to make a upgrade and been waiting for this video. Hands down the X17 R2 will be my choice. Alienware really missed an opportunity on the M17 R5 which is a shame. They could have easily done sooo much more with that machine.
Exactly how I feel, the m17 feels like a budget laptop with a premium price. Dell need to drop the price massively
I got the M17 R5 to be honest its the better choice out of the two. There have been a tonne of reports of thermal issues with the x17 some idling at 55 degrees and alot of returns. The M17 R5 has way better thermals, Better battery life and on par performance due to the x17 having such bad thermals and throttle. Go with the M17 you wont regret it. Also the M17 R5 has better port layout as well. You pay so much more money for the x17r2 for very little in the way of performance and actually probably worse performance due to the laptop not being able to deal with the heat from the new Gen 12 cpus.
@@silverpro8356 I agree with this, although I'm torn because I like the white color of the X17 R2. That said, I don't think any laptop can deal with the heat from the 12th gen chips, and most other laptops throttle them back at a much earlier temperature than Alienware, which lets them run up to 100C. If I got the X15 or X17 I'd have to change TCC offset to 15 to throttle the chips when they hit 85C. It would dramatically help thermals, but I'm not sure how big of an impact it'll have on total performance...
@@CosmicApe Man the M17 R5 is a beast hey. its so fast with the Ryzen 6800hx i feel like Mash it was way to hard on the M17.
@@silverpro8356 I agree. I actually don't mind a slitly thicker chasis as I use my gaming laptops as desktop replacements. Trackpad I couldn't care less, the led on the back is better on the X17 but i'll probably keep it off anyway. Hopefully they come out with a good AMD gpu too to make it even cooler and less noisy.
Honestly i ended up going with the M17r5 over the X17R2 for a few reasons. While the intel system performs a little bit better the roughly 5-10% is not enough better to offset the huge to me at least downsides and extra cost.
For clarity a 4tb+3070ti+6900hx+64gb of ram runs $3500. Meanwhile the intel system with the same specs is $3800.
What sold me on the M17 are the battery life, thermals, and cost. Where i work at thermals are a killer. My old alienware has simular thermals to the X17 and it makes my workspace spike up as high as 45C in a few minutes. I lose power.....a LOT. And frankly the AMD system has a much more.....consistant for lack of a better term power draw. On an inverter thats important.
Hope you enjoy it. They are both solid machines so you can't go wrong with either just the UK pricing is crazy
@@MashITTech that makes two of us lol. I tend to go alienware a lot as my job is rough on equipment and dells even if not as fancy as other brands just seem to hold up a lot better. And yea pricing is all over the place for laptops in the U.S even. Brands youed expect to be cheap are way more expensive then their "expensive" counterparts.
I'm going with the 1 year old M17 R4 that has a num pad and runs MS Flight Sim - that's the only gaming I do. Plus the used price is fantastic 1/2 off.
Getting rid of the built in number pad, and putting all the cool custom light bars on the BACK of the computer is a deal breaker for me honestly. I feel like you're just paying for the Alienware name at this point seeing as when it comes to customization, they always seem to take 2 steps back in the wrong direction and I'm saying this as a huge Alienware fan.
The Msi ge76-77 has the same hardware as the x17, more options, built in number pad, plus the cool light bar effects in FRONT you know for those who enjoy looking at their investment. Me personally, I would either wait on Alienware's next line up to see if they will do better with the design, go with the older 17R4, or just buy the Msi Ge76-77.
loved your content, there is a suggestion for your video on backpacks, the ogio launched a new renegade backpack with some suspension technology for laptop safety probably compatible with 17 inch for the new model of the backpack, would be great if you could review it. especially for x17
Great comparison as always. Hardware aside, the manufacturers are also "optimizing" their machines to perform well in synthetic scores like Cinebench, Timespy etc, in a way "gaming" the system. We should rely on real life performance to access how these machines perform. In heavy real-life tasks in Davinci Resolve, I really can't tell much difference between my top speced X17 and the older top specced M17R4.
Thanks mate, and I agree with resolve! we just upgraded our studio editing machine from a 4800h/2060 to a 5800h/3080 and see almost no difference :(
Will you be doing a comparison between the x15r2 vs m15r7? Been eyeing on both of them for a while and need some opinions on it.
Right off the bat, no QHD option??
Great video, at this point in time on Dell UK one can not buy an i9 with 4K panel for some reason so a no for me. I wonder if Dell will release a HX version, yes please if with 3080Ti and 4K. I hear the 4000 series Nvidia will be a huge jump, due 2022 ...
Yeah, hope it’s not too long for the 4000 series
Great review
As I’m on the fence between the X17 i7 3070ti 4k and the MSI GE76 i9 3070ti what your verdict between the 2, I love the x17 but could get the better spec GE76 i9 at a cheaper price
That's a tough one and I will be making a video on this subject in about a week as I haven't finished fully testing the GE76 yet. To summarise my thoughts so far, build quality goes to the X17, the X17 is quieter whilst gaming and also has windows hello. The GE76 has a number pad and secondary functions backlit, much better speakers and a better port layout! If you can wait a week I will have more information for you 👍
I got the Alienware M17 R5 with 360hz panel, Ryzen 9 6900HX, 3070ti, 16GB Ram, 1TB ssd from Best Buy for $1299 US. Did I get a good deal??
That sounds like a good price to me! the 3070ti is still a solid card that will last you a few years for sure
Just got a confirmation that my system extange of my m17 r2 to the x17 r2 I cant wait now!
Another fantastic vid! Cheers!
Thank you! Cheers!
I don't like both. I think they need a number pad option. I'll stick with my m17r4
They should kept numpad on m17 and new keyboard layout on x17, I assume they are just trying to cut costs, plus the cherry keyboards aren't cheap.
@@infinite_xiao5483 yup I don't mind not having cherry if I got full per key rgb and a number pad
I would take that x17 since it’s just the more premium laptops. The m17 is too close in price to justify getting it over the x17. Plus it’s smaller. My biggest complaint with the x17 and dell’s other premium offers is that they absolutely refuse to put AMD CPUs in their best laptops. It sucks because I would prefer an AMD model due to its huge battery benefits over intel. I don’t need thunderbolt plus usb 4 can do the entire thunderbolt 3 spec. Also the fact that neither laptop has a 1440p option truly sucks as it’s the sweet spot in between 4k and 1080p. At least the 4k model is 120hz which is the screen I’d get
That is a very valid criticism of laptop market in general. Whether you like Intel or amd(I am an Intel person) there are perceviable benefits to using both in laptops. When building a desktop, you're limited by your budget, but here, you're limited by the manufacturers deals with the cpu company, which sucks. It would be cool to have my 2 in 1 with an amd chip with 20% less performance but 20% more battery life, but it is what it its.
As far as I know, USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 are practically interchangeable, with Thunderbolt being a trademark.
@@henrikg1388 yeah, USB 4 throughput is identical to tb4 AFAIK. USB is very late to the party though, like display port always is. This is the only problem with open source projects like these, they trail the cutting edge tech a few years back. Just as USB 4 is rolling out, tb5 is almost out of the pipeline and probably will roll out with raptor lake mobos.
Still love my x17 r1 with the light on the TouchPad 🤪
Yeah I miss that touchpad 😢
@@MashITTech yes and I don't understand why alienware did a 480hz screen for this laptop... So useless. Thanks for the video.
Hey 👋 just got myself a brand new M17 with the Ryzen 6800 and 3070ti, 2k 165hz screen (with windows Hello), 1,5 TB (1+512) and 32gigs ddr5 ram, for the price of 1300€ and I'm really pleased by it.
I think the build quality is insanely good, I work with it and it's flawless, I game with it and it does fine without becoming hot like the sun...
I was on the edge of buying a legion with the same specs basically, for 1500€ and I absolutely do not regret going for Alienware, it has something that I can't explain... hey I'm in love with it what do you want 😅
Wow that’s an insane price! Think you did well there!
is 3070ti enough for any game?? is 3080ti has cooler thermal than 3070ti??
can any one explain to me,, thank you.
The 3070ti is enough for all games at 1080p and most at 1440p. 4K is hit and miss depending on the title but dlss or lowering the settings usually does the trick. The 3080ti is only marginally better so I don’t think it is worth the huge price hike
In machines like this(max wattage gpus) i would expect the 3080ti to get hotter since it just has a higher tgp(wattage) unless the manufacturer upgrades the cooling for those models
@@MashITTech thank u, that will help
@@ultimategohan1551 specially the i9 i think...
what u think about 11th gen 3080 or 12th 3070ti
@@MashITTech 11th gen 3080 or 12th 3070t i only play compettive games and watch netflex and youtube.
great review
TYSM for comparing M and X series
You really can’t go wrong with the Alienware m17 R5 at its given price. In fact a m17 R5 that costs $3,450 got a 25% better value for the money than a x17 R2 that costs $4,750. Because of this, I hands down prefer the m17 R5 over a x17 R2 by a mile but too bad that in Dell website the m17 R5 is temporarily out of stock.
@@Gamer-we2xw I don’t have it yet, don’t even have anything remotely close to that type of money to spend on a laptop.
That Timespy score cant be right? My Area 51m R2 with the 2080 Super scores 11600 graphics
yes but remember these are only 3070ti which about on par with a 2080 super, plus you get 200w TGP if I remember correctly
@@MashITTech yup, 200watt
Excellent! Just got mine M17R5 for $1350 open box excellent condition in Best Buy!! Amazed by quality and performance! Thank you for your review!
Whelp, Thinking I was wrong for assuming the only reason for new 17,s. Not having a full keyboard was the 4 fan chassis. Still will keep finger's crossed for a all AMD comparable to I7 3070--3080, 2k screen, full keyboard. In near future. Agreed with x17 still the better option. Even with ports in rear. Better port variety wins. Still like my R4 layout for everyday use out in the field. AKA. big cables out the back. No doubt I'll smash a USB stick if I can't see it on a dashboard, steering wheel, pitcher of beer, barmaid. The normal everyday obstacles.
Man, it really feels like they took a major step back with the M series. They went back to MaxQ GPU's? I thought that was what the X17 was supposed to be for. I tried spec'ing the m17r5 with a 3080ti and it only comes with a 240watt power supply? My m17r4 came with a 165watt 3080 and 360 watt power supply.
Why would someone want the intel 9 processor over the ryzen 9 for gaming? Isn’t the ryzen 9 the better options? I only ask because the x17r2 only comes with the intel 9 on the dell online configurator .
can't believe you have such low number of subscribers, your reviews are clear on point with great quality
Thanks mate. I appreciate the kind words :)
why are you saying the X17 R2 wasn't throttling when in fact it was showing PROCHOT on Throttlestop?
I'm just about to buy it, I'll give you my specifications, I wanted to know your opinion and if it's worth it, I'll use it for work and games, 12th Gen Intel® Core™i9-12900H, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3080, 16 GB GDDR6, 64 GB, 2 x 32 GB, DDR5, 4800 MHz, dual-channel, 17.3", FHD 1920x1080, 480Hz, Non-Touch, 3ms, ComfortView Plus, NVIDIA G-SYNC, Advanced Optimus and has 2 TB of memory. I also added 3 years of premium support. Do you recommend that config?
It’s a pretty good spec but is that an off the shelf config or did you choose those specs? What is the price like?
@@MashITTech I chose the configuration, it cost me $3517, in the end I changed the processor to a 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-12900HK (24 MB cache, 14 cores, 20 threads, up to 5.00 GHz Turbo)
and NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3080 Ti, 16 GB GDDR6, and I leave the rest the same, what do you think?
One more note I found out. X17 r2 is a 4ms 4K display. M17 r5 gets newer and better 3ms 4K screen.
X17 win me there with that side power charging port...😊😊😊😊
Just get the dell area 51m r2 if you find one ! such a rare beast of a laptop! - however, i enjoyed my M17 R4 while i had one.
No soldered wifi card on the m17. Which makes is better in that regard.
Are the shadow of the tomb raider benchmarks done at highest settings preset?
So which is better for Unity Game development? and why?
the pricing sounds like that shady back ally deal i mentioned about in my last comment... why buy the more power efficient ryzen system for crazy amount of money when you can buy the power hungry intel system with just a "few" more features for crazy amount of money... i guess a fool you'd have to be to pass on the intel system and that is all part of the shady back ally deal... :(
totally agree 👍
Man, folk that demonstrate laptop speakers over RUclips just get me laughing so bad.
You can tell I am no audiophile 😂 I do need to find a better way to test them
Is it bad that the fan heat at the top reaches 56c will that damage the laptop over time? And is there anyway to cook this laptop further to reduce that heat level? X
No, it’s not bad for the laptop, it could be uncomfortable for you if you rest your hand there or sit it on your lap. Dell have decided to concentrate all the heat on that vapour chamber and straight out the back of the machine and whilst it does get hot there at least the palm rest and keyboard remain cool. I am working on a video to reduce heat at the moment and hope to release it next week
@@MashITTech thank you for your response I was worried it ment that it was going to overheat as it’s really really hot there when playing games but you made me feel more at ease, thank you x
1:23 Did you use the Delorean to pick this up? the new X17 R5. I want that one. Lol
Haha I think I was getting ahead of myself 🤣
I bought the X17 R2. I hated it. It was very troublesome. From the Screen to begin, then after a "Tech" worked on it, RAM and over-heating issues. They ended up replacing it with an M18 R1 and I am so much happier. I would have settled for an M Series with the MX KB and a 3070Ti with some cash back but.. M18 R1 i9 13900HX, 32 Gb's RAM, 1 Tb nVME, with NVidia 4090 + 480 MHz Screen cost the same as the X17 R2 with i9 12900HK, 32 Gb's RAM, 1 Tb nVME, with NVidia 3080Ti with the 380 MHz screen
.
Wow, that’s quite an upgrade you got. I am loving the m18 👍
You put the wrong link on the "Buy the X17 r2 on Amazon: This is what I got when I clicked the link.
Alienware Aurora R10 Gaming Desktop, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB, 16GB HyperX FURY RAM, 1TB SSD, Windows 11 Home (Lunar Light)
Sorry, I think that was genius links trying to be clever! I will fix it. Thanks for letting me know
I bought the m17 maxed out. So the first one they sent me had a screwed up graphics card so they exchanged it for a new one. Three months later the fans starting grinding and the computer randomly crashes. They are sending me a x17 as an exchange now. Third times the charm? Going Asus next time.
hope so, my X17r2 has been rock solid so hope you have luck with yours
My ryzen r9 run at 80'c in average considering I'm living in hot weather country... & God lord.... 90'c + Thermal.... Would've melt right off the table in Malaysia..... XD So AMD do run cooler....
Yeah I guess there are some benefits of living in Rainy UK and its dull/cold climate 🤣

Great job!
12th gen intel isn't better than ryzen 6000 per se. It scales better in terms of performance over 45w, while ryzen performs better below. Battery life is better with the amd chips too, so there's a few things to consider.

How would the x17 r2 vs the alienware area-51m r2 compare.
I did a video of x17r1 vs area 51m r2 which will show you the chassis differences, then you can use the data from our 17r2 review to see how much better the r2 performs. ruclips.net/video/OS3QGQFErR0/видео.html
Thanks for the review. I am still waiting for the all AMD version. When that comes out which do you expect to be beter the intel version or AMD?
It depends on the GPUs they offer. At the moment they are just starting to offer the 6700m which I believe is worse than the 3060 (but haven't had my hands on one yet) I suspect long term the performance will still be with the intel version but the efficiency and cost will be in AMDs favour (when Dell sort themselves out)
Great review mate 👍
Great video Dave....Any of these machines have advanced Optimus?
Yes both do 👍
NOBODY RESPOND TO THE PRIZE GIVEAWAY COMMENTS. THIS IS A SCAM
Thanks mate, these comments drive me insane!
awesome comparison! Also, can you compare X15/ 17 with razer blade * intel version and M15/17 with razer ( amd spec ) ?
Thank you mate. I have already compared Blade 15 to X15 r2: ruclips.net/video/E1ay5_Aa0yk/видео.html My top spec 4k Blade only arrived yesterday so I will do a review after I finished testing it then compare with the X17r2 soon
@Mash IT you are awesome! Do you think we should wait n buy 40 series lap? Or can consider 30 series this yr n buy
Great Review, What game is that @13:49 ?
That's DOTA2 :)
I went for the R2 and your reviews are awesome. Thank You for helping me to purchase. I had MSI GE67HX vs GE77HX vs Alienware X17R2 and I went for the 4k Alienware primary due to the better screen than anything else.
So glad I could help! Still loving my 4K r2, the screen is just so amazing
@MashITTech agreed on the 4k 120 hz on the x17 r2. I just got an open box model that is like new from best buy for $2480 3 years no interest. Normal price $3399.99. It has 4k 120 hz, 3080, 32 gb ram, 1 tb ssd, came with box and all accessories still in the wrappers. 4k screen is great with hdr also!!! I can get the m17 r5 with 3070 ti for $1480 open box but not sure I'd want to go back to 1080p screen 360 hz is nice tho
