Thanks - this was a really helpful video. I just installed the Spiker struts, and had no issues other than the ridiculous force required in applying the steel rivets with a standard rivet gun. Once I got the DOYLE 13 In. Heavy Duty Professional Hand Riveter at Harbor Freight, the job became really easy. I would highly recommend this tool.
Thank you so much for the video. What a huge help! Mine seems to work fine on my 2022 Tacoma off-road. However, on the driver side, I think it might be a break reservoir, or maybe a small reservoir for something else, and it would appear as if the strut is going to slightly push on that when closed. Since it’s connected on by two bolts and nuts, I’m going to take those out and put in extra washers so that that little reservoir is 3/8 of an inch further inside the engine and away from the edge near the driver side strut.
I think the Spiker struts are better than the drill-less struts that seem to be popular now. The drill less struts seem to flex the metal at the lower mounting ball and over time will fatigue the metal. Also the drill-less struts use double stick tape on the hood hinge which over time will fail eventually too. I like the fact that Spiker gives a 5 year warranty on these struts. I have ordered them and hopefully it will stop raining long enough for me to install them. I wished that you included a video section on how to install the one on the driver's side. Other people have made the same installation video as you and only did the passenger side, which makes it seem like maybe the driver side is more difficult to do, or some how different. Having that part of the video would also give you more views.
Paid 50k for my 2020 pro just to have a medal rod hold open the frekin hood! Hood struts! By far best bang for the buck ever. The hood is ridiculously heavy. Was sceptical. They work fantastically.
Wish i had you guys close by,like my next door neighbor to help me out in installing this item. Great job on the video.looked simple to do,but with my luck id probably drill the hood.
That's strange.. At 14:10, you are drilling the second hole for the bracket towards the back of the truck. Then, at14:21, you are painting the front hole that you already had installed a rivet in. But the second hole is in a different truck. Then you install the second rivet into the first truck???
Kenny Yuen I think it's been done before by off grid engineering. We unfortunately didn't have have to do the install because we had to get it done for an event
I wish I would have seen your video before I did my install of another strut brand. The ones I installed do not lift the hood higher and were more expensive. I should have done more research before. Live and learn.
Great job! I wish you would have given the price of that package deal sweet, extra nice for tall guys hitting our head on that hood thank you like a good salsa it'll improve my taco
Loved the TRD badge on the grille! Is that a separate badge you installed or did that grille come with it? Can you please elaborate on a vid for us? Thanks!
Are those a one of a kind hood strut? And let’s say they do fail several years down the road. Is there some sort of cross reference with other Toyota hoot struts that could possibly fit?
Great job/great video. I hope to install on my Toyota Prius sometime this yr. I HATE those rods. So 6" extra is okay? I worry about being on the rack & hitting the ceilings.
Probably not, but you can set the height to just below where the ditch lights would touch the windshield (probably around 4-5" above stock) - that's the awesome feature of these struts.
After your video I bought these because is nice to be able to install it at the height that one would need. After finally installing them, they work great. My only problem was the supplied rivets that came with the struts. Maybe it's me but I could not get these rivets to snap off like they are supposed to. I thought it was my rivet gun so I went and bought a new one but the same thing happened. I had to use aluminum ones that I had and they worked fine. Anyone else having this problem? Btw great video. Thanks.
Hey @Taco Twonz what item is the touch up paint that you applied? I went looking for some and wasn't sure if it would work. Found some Rust-oleum touch up automototive. does it have to be colored or would clear coat work fine? what type did you use? thanks
I would not, myself. They are just screwing into the sheet metal, and vibrations of a moving vehicle might make the screws loosen. This could cause the brackets to come loose and drop the hood on you unexpectedly.
I am interested in the Tool Kit shown, which brand and model is it. Thank you. My new struts will be ordered as soon as my Very First Tacoma is in my driveway . Its on it's way to me very soon.
Chris, I have Soketechs that I installed on my 17 about 8 months ago. I made sure the hood bolt end was secured well and actually heated the glue patch with a hair dryer for good adhesion. I used anti-seize of the threads of the lower pins (including the ground bolt location) so the threads would go all the way into the seats. Using the flat washers helps secure them. I have had NO problems with them, (no ground problems either) and they work great as well.
Just wondering why you didnt punch and drill all the holes at the same time for each bracket. Seems to be a lot of un-necessary repeat work. Kind of difficult to get the touch-up paint in the second hole with the bracket already installed.
I skimmed through the whole video, I was looking to see what happens with struts installed from the time you open it. I'd like to see that in action, but I didn't see it here.
I would not, myself. They are just screwing into the sheet metal, and vibrations of a moving vehicle might make the screws loosen. This could cause the brackets to come loose and drop the hood on you unexpectedly.
WAIT!!!!! at 12:19 the hole you drilled is towards the front of the of the gap you marked for the middle and at 12:34 the hole is towards the back of the gap the extra battery is gone!!! what kind of shinnanigans are you trying to pull here??? 🤣😂🤣🤔🤔🤔 Then everything is back on at 13:06 , you killing me smalls!!!!!
A side note, if the extended 6" above standard option is chosen and you have a 2019 or 2020 Tacoma TRD PO, lifting the hood in a standard garage will have the hood touching the garage door opener in the garage. Don't ask how I know.
@@Runnin4Tacos mine must be especially low. For my 2020 Taco TRD PRO at standard height when set at 6" above standard, it touches mine. Not a major issue just an FYI. Thanks for the installation video.
I would have ordered, but $115.12 for shipping in Canada, you must be out of your mind, $176 for express shipping is completely crazy, I did not order the one on Amazon because they are asking for $29 for shipping...This means you do not want to sell in Canada, I guess I will go buy some in a Canadian store!
say bro ive been wishing for those because my left arm is paralyzed i like to keep my engine bay sparkleing clean but i cant think about it when you use your right arm to lift your hood what arm you use to grab the hood prop my bmw m3 had hood struts every time i be so embarrssed when i take my truck to toyota and get it serviced when they open my hood my bay is filthy your engine bay shows how much you care about your vehicle im a firm believer in that also i say the way you keep your interior is they way you keep your house remember that bro
Hey Tuan!!please check your email. Ive ordered something from you on 3/25 and i have still yet to receive it, nor have i received any tracking number since i purchased the item. An update as to what is going would be great. Nice vid by the way. Ty
I bought cheap ones for my old Jeep and they did not work when I got them. Got my money back and went and bought different cheap ones and luckily they worked. The point is you'r taking a chance by buying those $25 ones. I bought this brand and they work great. And no I do not work for this company and did not get mine for free.
If anyone doesn't know what a "hood strut" is that drives a Taco should only watch and keep self isolate indefinitely, lol. Or is it why the video is unnecessary long?

I use the Autobah88 ones that require zero drilling on my 2013 Taco.
Also lifts the hood higher for more clearance.

Ordered mine for my 2019..great instructional vid
Like the good lights too
Great video
I have redline on my 2020 I am pretty happy with them but could open a little more like my 08 use to. Should also make just bolt on style like the 08s
I am interested on the secondary battery installation :)
Me two🤣
Please do a review on it plus also on that gorgeous bumper😍.
Ok never mind I just found the bumper review video, thanks.

Many mysteries of tacoma
Can you do a video how to install the dual batteries?
Kenny Yuen I think it's been done before by off grid engineering. We unfortunately didn't have have to do the install because we had to get it done for an event
I'm glad I got the regular Redlines, just because another 6" and I'd be needing to stand on something to reach the hood.
UC 6in does accomplished a lot :-) Tacoma rocks

Just ordered a set same brand for my second gen Tacoma I didn’t know you can add these thanks for the video 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Already installed 💪🏽
Whats the second battery for?
Did you special order your engine in brown? I got stuck with mall crawl black!

elnietodeanadelia google trd grill badge, I put one on my grill.
Well done video and lots of details. In it you mention your second battery. Did you do a video on that mod?
never mind.... :-)
Can you make the link clickable? I didn’t even notice it until I watched the video and you mentioned it was in the description.
Objectivegiant done! Thanks fo letting us know!
Taco Twonz. the link goes to a 4Runner tail light!

I would do factory height
I would like to get a carbon fiber hood for the Taco
does it cover the holes on the driver side that people have screwed their power trays into?
If you have hood mounted ditch lights can you still get that extra 6 inches?
Thats a big no.
Probably not, but you can set the height to just below where the ditch lights would touch the windshield (probably around 4-5" above stock) - that's the awesome feature of these struts.
What wheels are you running now? They look amazing
They’re the RRW RR6-H! www.runnin4tacos.com/collections/2016-2018-toyota-tacoma/products/rr6-h-rrw
Can you do a video on thy secondary battery. Want to put one on mine
Those are sick. BTW the pro grille garnish you guys package with your grille is not good. I keep getting TSS errors.

Any touch up paint would work .
Thank you for showing using the rivet gun. Do you think it would be okay to use self tapping screws in lieu of rivets?
I would not, myself. They are just screwing into the sheet metal, and vibrations of a moving vehicle might make the screws loosen. This could cause the brackets to come loose and drop the hood on you unexpectedly.
Add lock tight. Then they won’t move

Not sure to be honest, it's just a Husky kit from Home Depot
Thank you, Home depot it is. LOL

Got anything on that Underwood light?
Bryan Harrington coming up next
2 questions: will the extra height effect clearance for ditch light mount?
Will strut clear SPod mount on the driver side panel?
Yes, I have ditch lights but it does touch the glass but not damaging. Don't know about s pod
Have them and they are AMAZING!!!
Just wondering why you didnt punch and drill all the holes at the same time for each bracket. Seems to be a lot of un-necessary repeat work. Kind of difficult to get the touch-up paint in the second hole with the bracket already installed.
Does make more sense. Your drill depth gauge will be off if you are drilling some with and some without the bracket.

Is this Taco an off road with the trd pro grill?
will they also work in a 2015 4runner?
Switch pro won't be compatible with driver side strut fyi
What a pain. I put in the SokieTech no drill struts. Easier to install and not in the way (like these would be) of my K&N Cold Air Intake.
Can you use self tapping screws instead of rivets?
