Nitro Gear & Axle Kit for 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Sport, SR5, & Limited:
www.nitro-gear...
In this video, we talk about the very important issue of proper gearing for the Toyota Tacoma. From the factory of Toyota, the Tacomas come with gears that are meant for higher mpg, doing so drastically affected the driveability and power of the Tacoma. The 3.90 gears used in the 3rd gen Tacoma basically ruined the driveability of the truck on the highway or going on hills.
We take the 2018 Tacoma to a local shop in Colorado to get the proper gears put in it to accommodate the bigger tires that we have put on it. We have 285/75/17 on the truck, which is equivalent to a 34-inch tire. This drastically affected the truck's ability to accelerate and keep the speed without downshifting constantly. Even with stock tires and no lift, the stock gears have issues with knowing which gear to be in. By regearing to 5.29, we have corrected the gears to accommodate for the bigger tires and added weight.
If you would like to keep your vehicle stock FOREVER, we would recommend 4.88. But if you plan on upgrading tire sizes or load the truck then we would highly recommend 5.29.

As a Jeep owner I understand the pain of a continuous need for mods. Proper gearing will make a huge difference. Whenever you feel bad about the $$$ you throw at your Taco, remember us Jeep guys know Jeep stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket". lol
I appreciate when you summarize or ask follow up questions to get better clarity for all of us who aren't industry jargon or acronym familiar, yet.
Back in the late 70's, and in the 80's. The first thing we always did with our Toyota's, was change the gear ratios. Running the 20R, and 22R engines. You could even run 31 inch tires with those engines. They didn't have any power. We swapped out for some really low gears. Of course you couldn't run at highway speeds, but at least it was drivable after the swap
At least the speed limit then was 55 mph
I have an 18 Tacoma TRD off-road I have the same problem but I’m very far away I live in Rhode Island great video love it thank you.
nice mod for 2x4 tacoma... When changing axle gears ratios in a 4X4, the front and rear axle ratios must be the same ratio when operating in four-wheel drive. If the front and rear axles are different ratios, severe damage to the transfer case and other truck components will occur
$2700 is for both.
Well said! 👍🏼
Rebel off-road in orange county California did a regear on my FJ for 2300 out the door. I dropped it off a 9am and picked it up at 4 pm. Talk to Jacob. Rebel off-road is a great place. Lake Forest is the city. Just south of Disneyland in so cal.
Andrew is spot on with his advice. Also consider that when your tire size -axle ratio is a mismatch the speedo AND the odometer are off. Part of the mileage problem is that the truck thinks it is going a short distance (due to the wrong driveshaft revolutions) and it is using a lot of fuel. Thus it thinks it is getting sucky mileage. If you correct for the error it is not that bad. However is severely reduced as the engine is in the wrong RPM band. One always gets better with a good match and efficient operation. Great advice.
Oh, the pain of post-mod realizatoin that you have to keep spending the dough to make your truck drive well. It's exactly why I would love a lift with bigger tires and re-gear but I don't plan to keep my Tacoma for a really long time. I am military and live on the base I work at so when I move, if I have to commute far, the Tacoma will be traded for probably a Camry Hybrid or similar. Idk though, i may do an oldschool civic as a commuter and keep the Taco.
Finally a video that answered pretty much all my questions on re-gearing
@Peter Paulsen I actually decided I don’t need to. But can you elaborate?
@Peter Paulsen true and initially I thought regearing would improve my MPGs but it’s actually gonna make it worse since my 4Runner is my daily driver and I don’t have any extra weight besides 33s plus I drive on flat highways. Regearing is more suited for off-road performance rather than on road driving
@Peter Paulsen lol I can respect that.
I have 33s on mine with 5.29. Had them for about 2500 miles. I'm getting 17.5 mpg.
@Ya Mumzhitachi it affects the fuel economy big time... i went from 10L/100km to 13L/100km.
It sucks. So i other words .. it's costing me 20 litres of gas every fuel up...soooo were i live its 20×1.20$/L = 24 $ / week more.
Thats over 100$ per month to make it look better ....
I have a 2017 SR5 taco on 275/R18/12 and i’m getting 18 mpg all the time
my bad *275/65/R18
i’ll have to check but the brand is a factory line over from toyo-mt called “centennial m/t, dirt commander” they are fantastic
33s stock gearing but I hp tuned my trans shifting points, average 21 mpg in Midwest
Excellent explanation about the two gear choices, 4.88 vs 5.29
I'm happy with my K02s pumped up to 45 lbs and getting great gas milage and RPMs at 1500 at 75 MPH only 2020 TRD OR prem.
4.88 for the MT-- thank this mechanic for me ehhh? cheers!
You can tell compared to the beginning of the video, the sound is much smoother
Also for folks who want to know how the math work and which gears to get take a look below:
Desire tire size ( I have 35's) 35x stock gear ratio ( manual Taco 4.30) thus 35x4.30/stock tire size (29**) = optimal gear ratio for normal driving
thus (again) 35x4.30/29= 5.19gear ratio needed.
Not a number set in stone however more of a guide. Cheers
Yes, very nice! Also, consider that Toyota under-geared the Tacoma for fuel economy
My friend had a 2017 Chevy truck he put 35s on and he ran into this issue as well. He didn’t care until a year later when he drove up a steep hill. Going 80mph, The noise was ugly sounded like a chain pop off and rattled inside his transmission.
Jim Carey is so soft spoken now that he's an off road parts salesman.
Jay Tee 😂
Baby those gears for 500 miles then change the fluid. Toyota should regear the 2020’s, prior to their release. We shouldn’t have to spend 2700-4000k to regear a brand new truck.
Couldn't agree with you more! Sometimes I feel that we got F***** when buying these trucks, knowing that the gears will suck after adding all these mods to our trucks!
Bill M right?! It's ridiculous!
Then dont. Spend the 1400 for the gears and do it yourself like any self respecting, non posing car/truck enthusiast.
Thank the EPA
@@johnbradley2016 you called it john. toyota couldn't sell the truck with steeper gears the cafe fuel economy numbers would go in the toilet.
Wow I wish I lived at home and all my work money was for fun.
I got a 2020.. rides like a champ no issues. I also don’t have oversized tires on mine nor a 4” lift. I’ve got aftermarket things just not the ones that shouldn’t be on there. These trucks are designed the way they are for a reason...
where do you live?
Got to love thous cluster screens you breath on them they scratch. Mine was bad in my 19 I just bought replaced it and already it’s scratched from lightly cleaning it. Guess I’ll buy another one and get that screen protector kit. Lol
Damm!! That's a sweet deal!! I wish they had a shop like that In Asheville, NC or in Austin Texas!
Shop around locally.... $2700 may be worth the trip...
Round 2 in Cedar Park, TX can set you up! Cedar Park is a suburb of Austin.
@@nathanjernigan5832 Do you know what they charge for some 488?
OV tune with gears would be sweet!
Unfortunately 2,700 dollars is pretty much my entire paycheck so altitude off-road prices are unaffordable for myself especially if I decide to drive clear down from Kelso, Washington ! I think it may be wise to see who else does this kind of work at more affordable prices. I’m starting to feel like owning a Tacoma is more of an investment than I really anticipated. Anyways good info regarding regearing , having this knowledge will save me thousands in rising fuel prices
I had 35'' on my SR22 Toyota 4 banger, lol.....tacomas just don't have big enough motor, idk why they don't offer a 5.0 or 5.7 l V8....seems like gears and more motor selections should be offered
To be fair, you guys got alot of extra weight on your tacos. My stock TRD PRO gets about 18mpg.
Love my manual
Need to find a good shop here in Dallas that can do this to my taco.
same for the future most people say 4wheel parts
find anyone in dfw? I'm in grapevine.. need to dig a bit
@@jcolv16 I just talked to the guys at 4wheel parts in coppel and they told me about $1300 for a TRD OR 4x2.
Awesome info Boyz!! Much appreciated.
Ryan ,redrider736 of course
I have a manual 17' Tacoma TRD Off Road and Regearing (installed the 5.29 ratio) is probably the most important upgrade after lifting and putting bigger tires on Tacomas. Huge improvement in terms of performance (no more downshifting to 4th even 3rd gear on slopy hills) and made my tacoma fun to drive again. Be advise though, don't expect the MPG to improve dramatically as mine only improved between 1-3mpg prior to the regear.
Great deal. Wish i was closer. From San Diego thats a 16 hr drive
John Bradley premier west gears in riverside will do ir for $1700 out the door
Favian that's way cheap, wonder what gears they are using
Taco Twonz nitro gears 4.88 or 5.29s. I have my app next for next week
Favian that means they are only doing the work for $200?! If that's true then that is crazy cheap!
Favian sweet! Let us know how they do after you get the truck back? El cajon trans quoted me $4k+
The mpg numbers are inaccurate regardless bc of tires and ratios are off from factory spec
M Blake Jr yeah for sure
Even in a stock 2020 taco trd pro, if there's even a LITTLE bit of an incline, im hunting for gears. I drove out to Denver from Phoenix last weekend and man... that was annoying lol. Cruise control has a cow. Would 5.29s help even a stock taco?
Well this is good to know. Also have you guys heard of a peddle commander? my co worker was telling me about em today sounded like it would be a good investment
damienstarr we have, we are planning to do the OV Tune instead though
@@Runnin4Tacos I'll check that out
Wheels are a factor when deciding what gear to get. What kind of wheels would you recommend for someone who drives mostly on roads/highway but occasionally drives off road? Also what gear would anyone recommend for those tires?
Will the 5.29 be too aggressive with 33” on highway speeds? Don’t do crazy off-roading and no rooftop tent
Right On! I need this for my Tacoma ASAP
There’s a break in period. That pumpkin is gonna get hot. Your driving intervals are gonna be timed also. Rehearing is so overlooked and not cheap but worth it.
Enrique Castellon 🤘🏼
10 months in now, how are they holding up? Did they mention life expectancy compared to the stock gears?
Which front bumper do you have on the black taco???
Shiyeett not to far I stay in Oklahoma night head up there to change my gears!
francisco morales definitely worth the drive if it's cheaper
Wow. Cant wait to get that done to my taco!!!
Wowwww Very good review and video job, very helpful information... soon i can I m gonna make this mod on my Taco (2019) I don't run big tire ...265/75R16 but I have a few mod ...Alu-Cab Explorer canopy +( rtt and awning coming soon ) few accessories offroad, fridge ..... so more Weight.... I m gonna go with this 5.29 for better transmission work and torque... thank you for all this information.. ( thas mad for me, Colorado are not close location for me...Canada Québec) ..... but anyway, thank you
Ayye awesome to see a taco content creator in CO!
check out @lastlineofdefense or LLOD he does tacoma/overland/gun stuff in CO
I used to live in CR! I still come back quite a bit! They off Plum Creek?
Old video, they have moved
that’s awesome man i wish i was near so i can do my gears.Questions what kind of sliders are you running?
I have a 2016, automatic, have 33" tires, went with 5:29's, after getting them, I've noticed my truck will not go over 84 miles per hour, no matter what. I also have a stock 2016, it does not have that problem , will go well over 84, seems like with the new gears, it has limited it, or messed with computer. Anybody had that problem? Thanks.
That’s how my truck is it’s a 4 cylinder because I drive a lot and it struggles on a huge hill with wind and I don’t even have bigger tires smhhhh
Just stumbled across your channel. Cool video and great info on the shop in Castle Rock. Im in pueblo.. Did they recalibrate speedo for new gears?
Thank you so much for addressing the dying breed of manuals! I've been searching everywhere for any answer .... I have a 2.7l manual. I'm running 31s now and want 33s but can't imagine running 33s on the stock gearing.
Is Altitude Offroad still offering that comprehensive $2700 out-the-door deal?
I really hope this is not a problem with the new Tacos.
Tuan Ngo it is, they didn't change the gears
Taco Twonz Thank you for letting me know. I’ll be sure to get it regear as soon as I get mine this fall.
what kind of rock sliders you have they look sweet
I'll keep my 285/70s rather than 75s for the extra inch and $ for regear 😲
Jared Scott if it's an automatic then 4.88 is still recommended but I get it, it's not cheap. But definitely enjoy driving the truck for once
Omw to Colorado to get the deal I’m coming from hawaii
mac 😂 hope you have a snorkle
dang, only if I had this done before I left
Hey man, what's the black seat cover in the back? Got a link for it? Thanks
@Matt McGarry clazzio seat covers
@@JuanManuel-fm9jt thanks for the reply but i was talking about the backseat that has a strapping type cloth over his heats.
Matt McGarry I think that’s a cover for his dogs
Such a killa deal, I wish I had $2700.
Would it be bad to regear to 5.29 on a stock 2020 long bed trd off-road on regular wheels and tires?
Thanks for the info!! When doing road trips what is top speed and Rpm's on the highway with 5.29 gears?
So a comment I'd read in another post was incorrect or only applied to their build. Basically going 5.29 reduces your top end to 80 mph? Looks like it still has plenty of power to continue to climb. Video on your front elocker?
What brand are your nerf bars ?
TIA
Ya that’s a little to far from Pa 😢
Ohhhh the rabbit hole...Awesome set up though. Bet it's night and day.
Thanks bro
Have you noticed the OME’s settling at all? My 2887’s settled and almost looks stock.
Sheriff Kermit we have Bilstein on the black Tacoma and it has settled
not bad... before the re-gear you were running around 3000 RPM's @ 70 mph and after you are now running 2500 RPM's at 70 mph. (-5000 RPM difference).
Once it’s broken in can you get some more footage of going up hills and going 80mph?
jhblake21 definitely
I paid 2,500. If that’s with $500 off that’s crazy!
on your other vid you was talking about your highbreed wheels i thought u r located in wa state u in co
I've heard there is a 'high altitude' Flash update that fixes the 'gear searching' issues, I'm in utah and am wondering if it will help.
David Caldwell Did you ever hear anything more about that?
@@claytonmedic To fix reported issue "gear searching" 2 Flash updates available:

TSB ?? about High Altitude Acceleration (the article I got this from didn't give the TSB # but said it helped too)
I still haven't checked with the dealership about my ECM status yet.
Do you have a new video testing the new 5.29 gears ? What size of tires you have in your taco ? Do you know what gears are coming in the new 2020?
Martin Guigou we don't have a new video yet. We have 34s on both of the Tacomas
Tell me about your back seat covers please
What size tires do you have- did you have the towing package prior?
May be a stupid question, and I apologize in advance but would going to a 529 gear help with towing?
That bumper is beautiful on the black truck what is it?
It is the Lil B's hybrid bumper
I’m in Texas can you make it worth my trip!! I ll do it
what would happen if you regear to 5.29 on a stock Taco? (with the intention of upgrades in the future)
Nothing, you'd be reving a little higher on the highway, but that's the right way to do it. It would launch like a bat out of hell too.
Nice, did you get the front locker when you re-geared? Did you get Nitro gear set ?
Mike Hammer yeah Nitro gears. Didn't so the front locker on the black Tacoma
Taco Twonz, bummer, missed an opportunity. Next time.
What gear for 35x12.50r18? On tacoma 2018-22
How do they recommen breaking in the front diff since you can't drive in town or on highway in 4wd?
Craig Wexler it comes with a pretty detailed break in procedure. Following it isn't hard
@@Runnin4Tacos I've read Nitros info, but do you just have to wait until you actually have around 500 miles on the front diff because for some, that is a long time.
Craig Wexler yeah the front will definitely take some time. Don't do highway miles in 4x4. What I did on my cement gray Tacoma is taking it on light trails or dirt roads and just do some driving in 4wd. It will take a lot longer to break in the front but must do. I did about 5 light trails and then flushed the front
I have 33’s on my 3rd Gen 4Runner 6cyl... I was thinking 4.88 or 5.29. Any advice? What was the total cost?
Would this work on the FJ Cruisers?
Does it feel better than stock?
Pedro Rodriguez wayyyyyyy. Stock is horrible
Doesn’t regearing void your warranty?
How much $$?
Does the place that did your regrearing only do the rear; doesn't the front need to be re-geaed?
If so what gears are needed
bjmcfarland1 oh no definitely not. You HAVE to do both the front and rear if it's a 4x4
Taco Twonz and the front and back gears must be the same ratio, e.g. 4.88’s front and back.
If you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost?
Miguel Munoz $2700 total
Thanks brother and keep those tacoma videos coming!👍
Is that just the rear?
Is it required to re-gear both differentials?
Or just the rear? just for a daily driver with 16” aftermarket wheels and KO2 one number size tires. Nothing else.
Yes if you have a 4X4. Different gear ratios will damage your transfer case quickly.
If you regear the rear differential, wouldnt you also need to regear the front??? Does the $2,700 do both?
MrDapperdantheman if you have a 4x4 yes and yes.
Would it help on a 4 cylinder also or is this just good on a v6?
Ive been looking for a great pet (dog) back seat protector for my tacoma any suggestions?
i have a Kurgo in mine. its black with a tan stripe. works well for my dogs and kids. allows it to convert from a hammock to a seat cover easily.
Do your gear recommendations change for the 2nd gen tacos w/ 5spd auto?
What fender flares did you use?
How much you pay for the gears?
$2700 with labor
So what’s the top speed with 5.29s heard it is like 88mph idk if that’s true or not
How much does it cost to change the gear ratio?
So even if I just go with 33" tires I should still go with the 5.29...that's the biggest tire I think I'll ever go. Or will 4.88 be fine also???
Mongerz if you add a rtt and other added weight then definitely 5.29.
Nice. What average cost should we expect for something like this?
Yo yo what happened with the Me So key fob drawing ???
j beck shoot! Haha we forgot our own giveaway. We'll do it tomorrow
Taco Twonz hahaha right on
