NITRO REGEARED Ep 2: Nitro 4.88 Gears in a Stock 2019 Toyota Tacoma - 1st Driving Impressions
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- We showed a video on the initial driving impressions when we picked up a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad. It’s completely stock. You may know, but the owner Carl is a Toyota lover through & through. A full build was planned for Suspension, Armor, 35’s and 5.29’s but after daily driving it Carl realized something needed to change. He already knew the factory gearing was horrible (3.90 w/ a .58 overdrive = 2.26 final drive) but soon realized that 6th gear was useless. This meant that in 5th (or sometimes 4th) on the highway it was constantly shifting, and getting horrible milage. So we decided to install some Nitro Gear 4.88’s as our first modification. Watch to see what we find! And stay tuned for more. We will be doing a full build next week with products from Nitro Gear (including a new prototype Nitro product), Toyota USA, Nitto Tire, ARB, Victory Offroad, ComeUp Winch, Factor 55, 12 Volt Solutions, Toytec, and more!
Stock 2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad w/ Auto Trans:
3.91 & Stock Tire, ~1500 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~1750 RPM @ 70 MPH (NOT ENOUGH RPM!)
4.88 & Stock Tire, ~1950RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2200 RPM @ 70 MPH
33” 4.88, ~1750 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2000 RPM @ 70 MPH)
33” 5.29, ~1900 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2250 RPM @ 70 MPH)
*Manual trans RPM figures will be higher.
Auto:
Stock-33” 4.88 Most Popular
33”+ 5.29 Most Popular (or AT w/o Locker)
Manual:
32-34” 4.88 Most Popular
35”+ 5.29 Most Popular
RPM Figures are similar for Overseas Hilux Revo. And yes, even if you have a diesel, you will still benefit from the gearing. 4.88 is ideal for 33-35” on Turbo Diesel models. We have actually toured 1000’s of miles of the Australia in a Diesel Hilux with 35” and 4.88, and it performed flawlessly.

So guys this makes a huge difference, and I know we talked about how nice it is on the highway with the gears but get this, Carl picked his 11 year old son up from school and after pulling out of the parking lot and driving on the 1st Street his son was like "Dad what did you do to the Tacoma it feels faster" even an 11 year old that does not drive could feel the difference immediately with the new peppiness.
Hey, nice video. Did you have to recalibrate the ECU tune for the shift points? (Hypertech or something similar)?
How much does a regear normally cost. With parts , install and ecm flash
Nitro Gear how much dose it run $ to do a set of 4:88 ?
@@nickstacher2395 yes 4.88. Sorry about the sparse comment
@@nickstacher2395 www.nitro-gear.com/searchresults.asp?Search=gptaco2016&Submit=
I just had Nitro 4.88 gears put into my 2021 Tacoma. I'm running 33" tires, and the gears are the best mod I've done yet! The trans shifts better, and holds high gear on the highway much better.
Would the 5.29 be too low for 33s?
@@Mapdotnowhere Nope, 5.29 would work fine too.
Just went to 4.88's night and day difference, what he says is accurate it "feels right" still breaking the gears in but no more hunting and I got 23.1MPG straight HWY never over 65 MPH since I'm in the break in period. I never came close to that stock. Same route I've taken when I got the truck and got around 19 MPG. I've added 265/16/75 E Rated KO2's, Cali Raised Rock Sliders a light weight Tonneau cover and about 250LBS of camping gear, oh and front and read ARB lockers that I'm sure add a little weight also expensive but worth it. Toyota should have used the 4.30 in the manual at least across the board in these trucks. I'm sure their engineers know more than I do though
It's sad that Toyota's customers have to fix this BS
not a fix, an upgrade
OutdoorsWonder no its a fix.
I think its both
Look even scott kilmer put out a video 😂😂😂
I can’t believe there isn’t a class action lawsuit against Toyota for the shit gearing they put into the 3rd gen Tacoma’s. It’s absolutely insane.
I have an like a 2019 TRD Off Road, but have been disappointed with the trans hunting and mileage, sounds like you have found the solution. I will look into the 4.88s. Thank you for the videos.
Mine is terrible about hunting. I specifically hate when it down shifts hard when I give it a little gas to pass on the highway. Def need to do this upgrade.
👍🏻. I’ve got no complaints with the choice of re-gearing. Most of whom are aware of this issue will do just this. Nowadays car manufactures are under government restriction to manufacture vehicles with economy and Mi per Gal in mind. It’s a costly fix as I have had this done as well. But the benefits were in actuality, PRICELESS.
Well said!
Just finished a 4.88 gear job on my 2017 AT TRD OR. Running 265/75/16 tires with a 3” lift. Also run 1.04 OV Tune. The gears make all the difference!! Should have done this when I first bought the truck. Toyota should gear like this from the factory. I’m about 1MPG better than before, but I don’t really care about that. The Taco came alive with the gears.
Awesome. Where are you located and what shop did the install ?
GPMAX01 I’m a little south of Houston. I had a place in Katy called Lonestar Ring and Pinion do the gear work. They were well recommended and did excellent work. The price was even less than he quoted me. They’ve done lots of Tacoma’s. A friend of mine has his TACO there right now. One day turnaround.
Marty Carmichael dang- I’m in Pennsylvania!
GPMAX01 That stinks. It took me a while to find a shop I trusted. Keep looking around and good luck!
Awesome! I live in Katy so I’m gonna give them my business, thank you so much for your helpful comment!
Just finished the re-gear of my 19 Tacoma. 4:88's for the win. Couldn't be happier. They howl a bit but I'm hoping that fades as they break-in. Thank you @Nitro Gear for giving us some options.
Very good! Thanks J
ORW re-geared my18’ Tacoma with 4.88’s (REM) polished recently and have some howl too. Big improvement from stock especially with 28570R17’s. 2k later after break in, still howling more so during deceleration. I’m wondering if it’s “normal “.
What’s the average price for the install of these?
@@TheeDutchRutter I had mine done at 4WP. They have a year warranty on the install good at any location. It was around 1300 for the install. I supplied the Gear oil from Nitro
Love "The Longest Line" audio selection!!
Carl has great taste in music, keep an eye on the other videos too :;
Nitro Gears...adding the TSB 58-18 or 68-18 dramatically helps with the shifting & no more "hunting for gears"....its been over 2K miles & it's running amazing (how it should have out of the the factory). Now Tacoma owners can merge the TSB update with 4.88/5.29 & yall have probably the best engine/transmission/gear combo out there for Off-Road & On-road period. Thanks again for the great content!
Thanks for sharing!
The TSBs did absolutely NOTHING for my truck. They are a total joke. After the tune I actually saw a lot better results. Now I am looking at doing a front and rear regear.
When changing axle gears ratios in a 4X4, the front and rear axle ratios must be the same ratio when operating in four-wheel drive. If the front and rear axles are different ratios, severe damage to the transfer case and other truck components will occur
Oleksii Silin lol no shit shirlock you dumb fuck
No shit POG.
It's been 2 years now since I went to the shop for 5.29 and OVT tuning. Fox 2.5 DSC , SPC UCA Best mpg 18. Tow 4k fishing boat, travel trailer 6k got 11mpg . Very specialist professional. Got there before they open up. Even still there listen to the morning meeting. Lovely dogs. Family friend oriented business. Best time to talk with them in the morning before they open. You know I knew I would be able to install it myself. Just save me a lot of time doing homework not to mention knuckles elbows knees and everything else that the body can bang up against. First modification I did to my truck bought new. BE aware Veteran's and First Responders will be discounted. First Responders Veterans super supporter. 🚒🚑🚔🗽🇺🇲🇺🇸🤙🤙🤘🤘
We love our Vets and First Responders! Thanks for coming in!
I think you mentioned how the RPMs rev higher in a manual transmission Tacoma with 4.30 gears vs an auto transmission with 4.88. Can you make a video explaining the characteristics/rpm differences between a 3rd Gen auto transmission Tacoma with 4.88 or 5.29 gears vs the manual transmission with 4.88 or 5.29? Including what is driving these differences from a technical perspective. Thanks and great content!
If they just added the 4.30 from the manual into all the tacomas it would have been a smarter idea. Or have an engine with more grunt at far lower rpm range. Another reason why I am still hoping for a diesel!
Pretty cut and dry, great info! Appreciate the work you guys put in Team Nitro!
Just had 5.29 Nitro Gears installed on my 2019 Tundra. It has a 2.5” lift and running 35” tires. Was very tired of feeling like I was constantly hauling around a trailer because of the weight & size of the tires. I almost went back to stock size but ended up having the gears installed and so glad I did. Now it feels like it did the day I bought. Holds 6th gear like it never did before. I can tell by the exhaust note that the engine isn’t struggling like it did before and always changing gears. If you plan on keeping your tundra and you’re running larger tires, do yourself a favor and go for it. Almost like getting a new truck all over again, way more fun to drive.
excited to get my 4.88's. Called you guys and you were super helpful. Sticking with 265/75's with some armor and a shell. Almost went 5.29 but I think 4.88 is going to be better on freeway.
Glad to hear it!
What does something like this cost?
@MontereyBayLounge $1400-1800 per axle. Plus labor if you have someone else install them.
Great informational video guys! Can't wait to get my gears in!
Let us know if we can help! Looking forward to you running #NitroGear!
I’m in Southern California, where can I get my truck regeared ? I’m kind of hesitant to take it to a random place and they don’t know what they are doing
I would like to know the rpms at 65-80 mph, with the 4.88 and stock size tires for highway driving
Same here, lots of 75+mph roads here in Texas
I need to know too haha.
What would you recommend for gearing if I’m only gonna be running 33’s with minimal weight on the truck - occasional towing of a light tent trailer? Was thinking 4.88’s. Thanks for your help!
Question. I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD pro and it’s manual, Only mod I did was added some a/t tires a few inch bigger so it’s still all stock in a way. Won’t be adding weight to it. What gear would you recommend?
Great info. I’m loving this series!
Glad you're into it!! We do so many local service regears that it only made sense to RUclips them
Hello I have a question . I also have a 2019 trd Iv lifted 2” front 1.5 rear and changed to 265/70/17 tires with procomp 8.5 wide wheels . I don’t have any extra weight . But if I regear I only want to do it 1 time . What rpms are you going to get with a truck like my set up at real world interstate speeds 75 mph to 80 mph with 5.29 and 4.88
James Howard I have 265/75/16 with 4.88 gears in a 3rd gen TACO. At 80 MPH I run 2500 RPM’s.
Feel free to email us your tech questions if you haven't already come to a decision.

🤙🏽Been waiting on this update. Awesome work as usual
Glad you liked it! We are looking forward to regearing your rig one day as well
Nitro Gear Sounds good, definitely in need of it🤙🏽
Just upgraded my 2017 to 4.88s. So much better! Good choice of music too!
So then, if I put 33in tires, 285/70R17, on the 3rd gen Tacoma, would you still suggest 4.88 or would you suggest 5.29? Right now I have added only 500lbs of weight to my truck, but I'll probably end up with a grand total of at least 1300lbs
This is what i want to know
With this exact same setup will it effect the truck’s ability to do 80-85mph on the freeway?
I would suggest going with the OV (Orange Virus) tune if the top speed is a concern. We have found that the 3rd gens have a "governor" of sorts that get tripped out by the gear change. The truck thinks it's going faster than it really is, and in turn your governor kicks in far earlier than it's supposed to. That's where the tuner comes in handy.
Hi, any chance for a side by side comparison between the 488s and the 529’s?

Gears make a big difference.. I have a 04 taco with 527 gears on 36.6 tires . A lot to upgrade to make it work right $$$$ get ready to spend big lol
I would also like to add that the howling sound can be heard when you reach 60mph then let off the accelerator. I can start to hear it at about 56mph up to 60mph but really hear it once you reach 60mph then let off the gas.
Would it be better to have 4.88s or 5.29s on 33s if I occasionally go on road trips 75-80 mph. I’ve put 65k miles on it in 2 years
33s and light weight (no racks, tent, etc) 4.88s are right on the money.
@@NitroGear If you were to stick with 33" tires but 75% of the time run lighter weight, but also that other 25% run with say 4-800lbs added, would I be giving up a lot by not going 5.29? Currently running stock and plan to keep it that way for a while but I know I want to regear now, and wondering if I should go 5.29 right away vs. going 4.88 now and then finding necessity to go 5.29 down the road.

@@NitroGear I have 2nd Gen Tacoma 2WD 3" lift 33s, and no rack, tent, etc. driving mostly on street and long driving in summertime 3 to 5 times. What would be the perfect gear upgrade 4.88 or 5.29?
@@237311 Is it an auto or stick shift my friend?
If auto, you would actually want 4.56, if stick shift, 4.10 or 4.30
You need to do this same video with more videos. I’m going to do an F150 with 35x12.50. You guys have suggested 4.88s. Every forum I read says it’s wrong. I’m going to follow your suggestion though. You’re the experts.More videos explaining the science and showing real world experience is what the consumer is asking for when they look you up on RUclips. Just a suggestion but these videos are super informative but it’s not my truck so there is still hesitation,
Thanks Matt! We will be doing more like these as time moves on :) There are some key differences in transmission efficiency between the 3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma & your F-150. With the difference mostly being trans gearing & final drive. Your truck will actually be quite happy on 35's with 4.56 ratio or 4.88, but I'd prob do 4.56
Thanks for posting! Will be getting the 5.29's on my Tacoma this summer. Looking forward to being able to drive it on long trips in the same gear ;)

For some reason, Toyota geared the 3rd gen Tacomas like they only drive downhill, but they forgot that if trucks only go downhill, they wouldn't need an engine.
Late to the show, but I just want to say thanks man. Im in the market for a Taco. Going to lift with 33s or 35s and re-gear with 5.29 gearing. Im a Jeep guy who decided to go with a something more reliable.
Good choice! Glad you're rocking with us!
I love that I went with the 5.29s I’m running 285/75/16
Hey Christopher how did the 5.29’s gears affected your top speed?? What’s your speed on the highway?
What's your rpm at 80 mph?
?
After the install how does it grab posey traction when your offroad in 2wd do they both lock in pretty good
Great video, I have a 2016 Tacoma, 4-door, long bed, auto, 3" lift with 285/75/16 tires, I do a lot of highway driving with hills, and do haul a 14' utility trailer with a UTV on it, and it's absolutely horrible when I do, don't even use cruise control, it's a joke, constantly shifting, what would you go with, 4:88's or 5:29's ? Just afraid 5:29's might be to much. Thanks for the great video.
We think you would appreciate either, sounds like you have a need for the deeper gears with terrain and load specified in your comment, 5.29s!

What does this do to acceleration from a stop?
Does it slow down the take off in a stock truck?
I'm interested in getting the 5.29 on my 2017 dlb cab long bed 4wd
Very informative. I haven't decided as yet whether 4.88 or 5.29. Don't plan on lifting, but I do plan on putting the biggest tire I can (no mods please). Towing is in the future. 2019 TRD Off-road 4x4.

But not knowing what kind to get or the prices on it?
I love that this dude is jamming NOFX at 5:40 in the video! I just picked up a 2017 TRD Off-Road and I'm thinking 488's here in New Braunfels TX.......oh damn Mad Caddies too!?. I fucking like this guy!

Planning on running 33’s on 18’s. Just pavement princess. Would 5.29’s or 4.88’s be best for mileage and overall improvement?
Go 4.88 :)
Gear whine/howl sound after time 1:02?? I got 4.88s done almost a week ago and I have howl sound when I take my foot of the pedal. Love the performance difference but was not expecting the howl. I had no idea how common this was with the 8.75 rears.
Prolly a dumb question. So does it have to be a trd model with a locker to re gear to 4.88 or 5.29? Or can you re gear a SR model that doesn’t have a factory locker?
What do you recommend for my 2018 tacoma off road? I have a 3" lift with 265/70/17?
I live in Charlotte NC. I want to know of any local places that you recommend to regear my truck with your nitro gears since Washington is a long way from me lol?
I’m going to get the 4.88 on 33s, besides better mpg would I get more power or better torque?
I have a 2018 TRD Off Road Tacoma with a Manuel Transmission with 4.30 gears. I only run three tire sizes 235/85/16 or 265/75/16 or 255/85/16 I have s fiberglass truck cap, with Kings 2.5 coilovers (w) upgraded 700lbs springs & remote reservoirs in front & a added leaf kit in the rear with 2.5 Kings shocks with remote reservoirs. Also have the minimum Warn front bumper with the Warn M8000 winch on the front. Would I benefit going from 4.30 gears to either 4.88 or 5.29 gears with a Manuel transmission?
Very interesting video and information nevertheless confusing.
You say in your video that 4.88 is the PERFECT ratio for stock AT Tacoma (OEM is 3.9 differential, 0.58 trans = 2.26 final ratio & 30.6" tires, low RPM). According to my math with stock 30.6" tires & rear gear 4.88 @ 65mph = 2,020rpm @ 100mph = 3,108rpm.
Question: From you comments in this blog WHY do you recomend 4.88 for 33" tires. Once again my math says that with 285/70R17 tires = 32.7" the near exact match to a stock Taco with 4.88 is a 5.29 ratio @65mph = 2049rpm, @100mph = 3,153.
Summary: Stock Taco w/ 4.88 rpm's is practically identical to 5.29 rpm's with 285/70R17. If you claim that 4.88 is the perfect match for stock why do you recomend 4.88 for 33' tires and not 5.29.
My comments do not refer to if you have or not additional weight or modifications only numbers against numbers
Thank you very much for your feedback

Hello NG I just purchased a 23 Taco TRD access cab with a 6sp. I have the factory lift kit installed and I run 255/85/16 33.2 for tires. Even with stock tires My Taco struggles at speed lower than 65mph in 6th. It feels like it's lugging.
Would 4.88 be good enough for what I run? And I do a fair bit of Off Roading Over landing .
Thx for your time and Great video!
Hi.. I just got my 16 Tundra TRD Pro CM regeared to 5.29s and I'm hearing a slight whining/humming noise at about 60mph. Is this normal? I have about 200 miles on the regear so don't think it's fully broken in yet. What are your thoughts on this?TIA
If I have a 2023 3rd Gen Tacoma Limited 4x4, and It is my daily driver and use it most for freeway and highway, which gear ratio is better, 4.56 or 4.88? Please advise. Thank you!
I got 4.88 gears front and back for 2016 Silverado z71
Th rear gears is making a noise that sounds like a jet.
Is this normal? Or was this installed wrong?
Should gears be making any noise at all?
What would be the suggestion for those of us who keep the truck relatively stock height, weight, but with 265/70/17 tires and tow an aluminum boat every weekend that weights about 1400 pounds but is also a daily vehicle that drives on average 50-100 miles a day? 4.88's sound great! But the website says 5.29 for trucks towing. Problem is I only tow recreationally and mainly daily the truck. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hey guys just subscribed, gearing is such a complex issue and I'm sort of obsessed with finding the right gears for my truck. I have a 17 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins and 68RFE auto trans. It has stock gears that are WAY tall if I'm not mistaken they're 3.23 or something like that?? The powertrain is stock and I'm running BFG K02s 35x12.5x18(actually seemed to improve the way it shifts). I may at some point go to 37s but that would be the max for this vehicle. Any thoughts? I will be tuning the ECM/TCM (emissions intact at first anyway) and I'm planning on building the trans at some point (obviously)... I've heard first hand that 4.56 is too much for 37s. I'm thinking 4.10 or 4.30. Any help would be appreciated!
Travis Korda you’re at 3.42 stock. 4.10 if you have power mods and deletes but 4.30s if your stock. Again 4.10s if you aren’t towing heavy and 4.30s if you’re towing heavy. A lot of good info on the forums too.
Awesome thanks for the help. I know I can get AAM (OEM) gears in 4.10 and I do eventually plan on tuning and modifying for long term reliability(deleting). Thanks again!
Hey Travis - Thanks for reaching out.
Yes you're right in thinking 4.56 is too deep for your Cummins powered 2500 Ram.
4.10 or 4.30 is the way to go. If there is a chance you'll just stick on 35s, 4.10 - If there is an increased chance youll just got 37s, 4.30 ratio would be a great option.
We like to tell people to gear for your goals, nobody wants to pay for a ratio to be installed when 1 year later they may bump tire sizes again and wish they'd have went deeper.
You can find our Gear Packages for your truck here:

Have you guys re-geared many manual 3rd gen Tacoma's? I'm getting a 2020 double cab short bed offroad manual soon and I'll be hauling a heavy slide-in camper full time. I'm wondering if I'd benefit from the 4.88 upgrade, even though the manual is already pretty good from factory.
Would you recommend still regear'ing after adding a supercharger to a 3.5?
Hello Carl .. if it feels right stock tires and 4.88 5.29 would be enough for 285 - 315 tires ..?
Yes, this is the idea. with the .58:1 OD you can't really gear them to low. Also, the Hilux Revo uses same trans and diffs. With the diesel 4.88 & 35's are great!
Great video very informative. How much does it cost to swap out gears on a new Toyota?
If I get 35s and 6 inch lift what do you recommend 4.88 or 5.29. Most going to be driven on the streets here and there haul a boat and go off road 1 in a blue moon.
what would you recommend for a 2020 trd off road. going up to 33s on 3 inch lift with maybe a roof rack and light bar. couple dirtbikes in the back on road trips. 4.88 or 5.29?
i have an 2008 fj cruiser manual trany, i am going to regear what do you guys recommend? it running 35s on 17 inch wheels and it has front and back aftermarket bumpers and winch . thank you
What would you recommend for a 2019 Taco with 33”s 2WD 3” lift?
Approximately how much does changing gears cost?
I plan on putting 33s on my truck that is identical to this one but it's the 6ft bed. Should I go with 5.29 or 4.88. The truck is an everyday driver.
Would it be more practical a 5.29 on a stock 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro if I plan on adding bedracks and possibly other mods in the future?
Unless you go bigger tires as well(33s), no.
Jtwizzle bull shit u dont need bigger tires. Just more agressive. Be would have more power than you with 31 tractor tires. Would spin the hell out ofnthem
Xjust picked up a 2021 off road long bed, what was the cost to change these out? Bought it to tow the boat I just built and worried about long trips in 4th gear
I plan on putting 33s on a Tacoma sr5 v6 4x4 do you recommend 4.88s or 5.29s? I don’t plan on towing or putting any weight on the truck besides the tires.
What gears you recommend on a 4th gen 4runner v6? I’m running 3” lift with 285/75/16. Also steal front winch number from demello off-road and 10k smittybilt winch.
I was thinking about going 4.88 on 35s with a super charger. What do you think?
Awesome vid! Love the channel. Couple of noob questions. Does regearing throw and sensors or instrument warnings? And love the dash plastic bezel color. Did you paint or buy painted?
So regearing can sometimes throw off the computers. Such as a Jeep JK, which you absolutely must flash with a tuner to read correctly & disengage the limp-mode post regear.
I’m slowly working my way to 35s on my 2nd Gen ( 2014) which gear ratio would you recommend? I don’t carrry that much weight on my adventures , these forums are mixing me up between 5.29 and 4.88
5.29 for sure. 35's are huge, and you will need that extra torque to help with that extra rotational mass. I have 32" tires (265/70 17) and would go 4.88.
I just lifted my tundra 5” and running 35’s. It’s a 4.0 v6 2014 . What gears do I have and what do u recommend ? It’s my Daly work truck . No off road .Thx Great info .
I have a 2015 4.0 5 speed auto Tacoma, I have 33 inch tires and a 3 inch lift. I don’t plan on adding more weight to it and mostly drive around 60-70 mph, would I be better off with 4.10 or 4.56?
4.10 since it's a manual transmission :)
I can hear a harmonic howling in this video. It might be the pinion-bearing preload has loosened. Please let me know if I’m wrong
Is regearing only available for 4x4 Tacoma's. I'm going to be buying a 2020 4x2 tacoma for work, a lot of highway driving. Planning to sticking to stock tire size.
I’m sure having your truck re-geared voids the Toyota warranty, right? How much does re-gearing cost?
Usually we book for 12 hours labor + parts.
I have a stock 2021 Trd Pro do you recommend using 5.29 if I am using the stock wheels? may add bed rack and tent later.
4.88s for stock tires :)
Could I ask a dumb question do you do both front and rear or just the rear? When I do it I want to do it the right way.
Yes, you need to do front and back. Expect a landed cost around 2500-3500 including gears and labor.
Front & Rear is a must.
Hi I have a 2020 3 gen Tacoma off road Tacoma and add heavy duty old man Imu rear springs to her . What I’m trying to get to is i own a lawn care business and my truck pulls a large box trailer I’d say 90% of its life . I intended to stay with stock tires but would probably go as high a as 33” later but for now stock tires it is. I’ve been on the fence as to what gears should I get 4:88 or 5:29 from every thing I’ve read and heard 4:88 sounds like the most fuel efficient for my set up with stock tires. Your opinion will greatly be appreciated. Sincerely a guy from GUAM.
@nitro gear What is that humming noise in the background? Is that the gears? Are they noisy at all?
What ratio would be recommend for a 1988 Toyota 4x4 V6 truck for trails and a bit of off-roading? (Daily drive)
Really depends on the tire size.
what gearing do you recommend for a daily driven 2nd gen auto v6 4x4?
Should have thrown in a trutrac, they work great on road, especially in rain.
What would you recommend for a 2015 Tacoma with 34- 35" tires, steel bumpers, and set up for offroading?
5.29's
5.29s - at very least 4.88, but you would be better off with 5.29

Are 5.29 gears compatible with an ARB air locking diff? I have a second gen taco sport, no e-locker
So with the manual 3rd gens having somewhere around a .71 6th gear would the 4.88's be a good choice while running 33's?
I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and I’ve not liked how it’s hunts for gears. I recently added rock sliders, from bull bar with hidden winch, 3 inch lift with 285/70/17. I also added a leer top. I definitely added some weight on my Taco. I’m on the fence with 4.88 or 5.29 when the time comes so I can regear. What would be your recommendation? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Either ratio would be a great improvement, but you would probably be best with 5.29s - I would assume you're also interested in rear bumper w/swingout etc in future? If you ever plan on rolling 35s, certainly 5.29. We like to tell people to gear for their end goal because nobody likes to regear twice!

Thank our Nitro Gear! Just wasn’t sure if 5.29 would be to much gear for my setup?! Also do you guys recommend cryogenic coating on your gears?
@@krismontano7495 nope the 5:29 would be fine as long as yours is an automatic. Put it this way 5 to 9 in an automatic truck with stock tires still turns less RPM in a stock truck with a manual. We do not do cryo, the gears already go through state-of-the-art CNC and Heat Treating processes
@@NitroGear I have an automatic trans as well with 285's. Will 5.29's be okay with 33's? I know the recommendation is 5.29's with 35's.
Okay, I do have the automatic transmission. I don’t really want to go with a bigger tires as of right now. I like the 285/70/17 on my truck now. I might want to add a bumper and swingout one day.
If i purchase the 5.2 gears for my tacoma can you install them if i drive up from cali
Thank you so much for making both of these videos I really hope Toyota gets their act together and offers different gear sets in the future
Which gear should i choose if im adding front and rear bumpers but keeping stock tires? i have a 2017 TRD offroad
Carl
Forgot to mention. The calculations noted on my previous message with 5.29 are comparably slightly lower than those with OEM manual transmission
What is you regearing suggestion with all math considered for a daily drive vehicle
Thanks
John
Hi I have a 2021 Tacoma but has a manual trans. Keeping stock tire size. Still go with the 4.88?
Are you living in a mountainous/hilly area? Tow, etc?
I have a automatic 17 Tacoma SR5 4WD 2.7 access cab running 285/70/17. Would you recommend 5.29 or 4.88?
Does a Toyota map it's trans on RPM, wheel seed, and throttle position? More heavily on one than the other? Wouldn't the trans learn the new gearing to some extent? Has anyone noticed this? I really want to regear. Just skeptical... Perhaps. The extra pep, and towability is what I desire most.
I see a lot about the V6 trucks but what about us 2.7 guys (manual trans so 8.75 diff 3.91 gears) I’m torn between 4.88 and 5.29, currently running some extra weight (bumper, winch, rear rack) but only on a 31.5” tire 265/75R16
