My Toyota has a 5 speed manual. When I bought it, no one was aware that the drain plug for the transmission was not tightened properly at all. It wasn't until during a round trip from Portland to Seattle that I realized I had been driving without transmission fluid for over a year! I tightened the plug, topped it off, and another year later it's running great!

This happened to me on a trip from Connecticut to Arizona. Most of the transmission fluid leaked out. The mechanic who helped me figure it out kept repeating "you have to remember, the toyota is an incredible machine." Topped it off in Arizona, made it back to Connecticut.

My 1991 had 270k miles before the trans finally went out. Still drivable, I just lost 4th and eventually 3rd, never left me stranded though. I found an old 5 speed on craigslist for $50, I show up and it's buried in the guy's backyard hallway in mud. We settled on $25, cleaned it up, still runs to this day with almost 450k miles. My Honda Civic has lasted over 5 years without a single mechanical issue, and that's with over 6k in collision damage. (Not with other cars, stuff like a tree falling on the car, etc...)
Also took about 15 minutes to change the transmission oil myself. Not hard to maintain at the very least. Still runs great, starts in the cold with no issues. (I live way up north). I used to do delivery, and would drive it like I stole it, and it's holding up through all of that abuse.
They definitely make durable vehicles today. (In many ways, they're more durable and the computers can adapt to user error, like putting the wrong fuel in).

I happen to have an '87 2wd, 1.8 gasoline if not mistaken, with almost 300k kms and it is not really being driven the past 15 years because of fuel consumption and the fact that it is not needed to carry anything. This tank of a pickup hasn't rusted one bit, if you exclude some rust in the cabin frame, i don't even remember the last time the engine, transmission and diff oil was changed, and still, when needed in the field, the fucker will start up with who knows how old gas in the tank, be loaded with atleast 1.5 tons of stuff and cruise with speeds of up to 80 kms/h with ease. The thing just does not want to die, but to be fair it is not abused or neglected in any extreme way. Toyota engineering at its finest.

There are several manufacturers that do all kinds of cars even today that can last a long time. Very easy to spot. Look at the warranty of 5 years limited and 10 years for the powertrain and that speaks so much more than any marketing effort. Because they have to bet with real money how much what they designed is really reliable.
Kia is amazing now even beating Toyota and is ranked 1st in reliability, Toyota is still there, and you have Honda, Hyundai, and some other manufacturers. And if you need really something indestructible there is still the Hilux or Land Cruiser.

@@Shepherd1234 you listen to J.D. powers garbage on what they say for cars? They only rate vehicles for first 90 days of ownership, so that fantasy that the Kia is more temporarily “reliable”. You can’t listen to those fantasy reviews, half the time they are being paid by companies to say good stuff about cars. Kia is junk, they have engine fires all the time. And yet J.D. power claims all this 90 day ownership bullshit that isn’t true over a 5 year period. Some Hyundai’s & KIA’s with manual transmissions might be decently reliable, but you can rarely get a manual anymore, & if you have to look hard to find something rarely reliable made by Kia, might as well just get the reliable readily available Toyota that’s just the same price as the Kia or Hyundai. My whole point is, don’t listen to those fantasy reviews. You can only listen to a mechanic that knows all the common major/minor problems of each vehicle. That’s what I do, & I also have good knowledge, & I own a 17 year old Matrix that runs like a top, with 151,000 barely broken in miles, sounds just like it did when it was brand new.

All the glory went to the Yota that was demoed carefully to survive. More spoilers. GM hired camera crews who made all their commercials for the new Silverado..... with a Ford Raptor. I mentioned that it's ironic to the camera guys. They said that their employer bought the truck. Top Gear did a big 3 competition in which the Chevy truck was considered the winner. Only the Dodge could have made it. The Ford could have made it too. All about the drivers. Toyota paid to be portrayed favorably again in that episode. It was declared the official winner because their camera guys, drove sensibly because of where they were so they could... get home.

I had a 1984 Toyota truck and loved it! It looked little and weak, but I abused it! I overloaded it, pulled a fully loaded trailer across Washington State over the mountains with the bed full too, went up steep and bumpy mountain roads, and drove it aggressively. I changed brakes in an auto part store parking lot, changed a water pump on a mountain pass in the snow, and replaced the clutch myself. I miss that truck. Simple, reliable, and easy to fix.

Bought a Toyota pickup new in 1990 with the 22RE. It was the base model, which meant:
    No radio
    No cigarette lighter/charger outlet
    No passenger side mirror
    No rear bumper
No carpet OR floor mats - just a rubberized floor
I added most of those things
    Oh yeah, no AC.
I drove it 458,000 miles. I had a water pump and fuel pump replaced and it had an appetite for alternators - I'm guessing the guys that installed the charger outlet and sound system buggered something up.
It was still running, although it was jumping out of gear and you could hear it would need engine work. I sold it to the state in a cash for clunkers program. I got under the car to check something and the frame looked almost new. Anywhere else in the world they would have dropped another motor in it and kept going, but I felt the whole truck was getting tired by then.

  • @MrPainseeker

If you absolutely must masturbate, you can rent a car at huge expense for a weekend, but how about a Culture Change..........your identity will be based upon what you CONTRIBUTE TO CIVILIZATION not on which model or brand of car you drive. Cars are the worst possible investment anyone could make, a black hole of money, time in traffic, accidents, parking and speeding tickets, DEPRECIATION, total waste. When running a UN-spec armoured Toyota through trials at a certification testing house in Germany, the marksman repeatedly put rounds through parts of a HiLux that wasn't protected by armour (such as door hinges, suspension, engine block, headlights and so on). The manufacturers, the certifiers, and the buyers were shaking heads in disbelief at this vehicle's ability to continue to run and operate despite catastrophic damage. It would regularly far surpass expectations in such tests, including when tested against explosives. It is not the most powerful of trucks and as such can fall down when matched for performance against other vehicles, but if core reliability is your priority (especially for civilians who won't put such immense burdens on it), few vehicles (if not equipment in general) will best it.

I have a 1998 Toyota T100 SR5 with the 5-speed manual and I absolutely love it. It's my daily driver, and it runs incredibly well. Unfortunately it's the RWD version, so I can't do much in the world of overlanding or off-roading, but I still absolutely love it. For my Christmas present to myself last year, I installed a new stereo head unit and some upgraded speakers and they sound incredible. Maybe one day I will look into converting it to 4WD, but it would have to be when I have some middle finger money that's burning a hole in my pocket... And yes, I know it would be a waste of money when I could just put it toward a new truck, but I don't care.
