Fuel efficiency of the engine is different at different rpms and also at different throttle positions, so its crazy complicated to know the best rpm to run as driving conditions are very dynamic. Fuel efficiency is also affected by how the engine ecu is programmed. It isn’t always for maximum fuel economy due to power and emissions requirements. Gear ratio steps in the Tacoma 6spd auto are kind of strange and only Toyota could explain why they chose them as they don’t have even spread like a typical auto or manual. In addition, it seems that to protect the transmission, they program it to shift out of overdrive at a relatively low throttle position when requiring higher power delivery, especially at lower rpms where heat from loading/lugging it could affect its life. So regearing to get higher rpms allows the Tacoma to hold the gear longer as you will have more power available due to the higher rpms, but also, the programming of the shifting based on throttle position is allowing the transmission to hold the overdrive gears longer as the higher rpms mean less lugging. Generally lower rpms are more fuel efficient but only if you have enough power in the engine at those rpms and you are not being detrimental to other things, like heat and stress and emissions etc. If you run, more weight, more wind and rolling resistance, bigger tires etc, you need to over-correct the engine rpm to get more power and better throttle position which will effectively and generally give you better fuel economy than stock gearing for the same exact driving conditions.
All I hear from RUclipsrs is Tacoma transmission searching for gears, I have a 2020 tacoma TRD. Just drove from Washington state to Moab Utah and back. Truck fully loaded and a rooftop tent approximately 750 pounds total. About 1150 with myself and family in the truck. I have rock sliders diamondback bed cover, and load bars. My truck was never searching for gears, never upshift and downshift in sporadically or any of that. It held strong over all the massive long uphill grades. The vast majority of the time the truck stayed in one gear and pulled over the mountains with no problem at all. So I just don’t know what people are talking about when it comes to the Tacoma transmission. I’ve had no issues or complaints so far, no upshifting and downshifting searching, hunting for gears. Simply have not experienced that at all.
@@Maxx.Powell thanks for mentioning that. I thought I was going crazy, like, am I the only tacoma owner who is not experiencing this? I think people might use "3rd Gen Tacomas a little to generically when discussing issues. I'm glad the re-gear worked out for you, seems like a huge difference. thanks for the reply, have a great day, and keep up the good work!
Me too... still debating. I was thinking that it really depends what you do to the truck. I heard 33s or less for tires you stick with 488. Anything more than that or extra weight and tow, you go 529. I keep hearing different things though. It’s like there is no really correct answer.
@@vietta3771 I know eh, I’ve heard the 5.29 won’t be too much and I’m scared of doing 4.88 and not being enough for the hills and towing but in scary 5.29 will be too much for 80% city driving
@@Rickwynne I’m in the same boat. I’m running 33s now. 285/75/16… No lift. Probably won’t. It gear hunts all over Dallas Fort Worth. When it’s windy… it’s worse! 15-16 average mpg and with the way gas prices are, it’s getting about the same as my buddies stock raptor …
@@vietta3771 I feel like I’m gonna go 5.29 cause I don’t need to be doing 130+ km/h on highways always. And will be nice for towing and all the hills. Fuel Mileage improved would be nice too, gas is outrageous

I follow TW pretty much every day, and didn't see anything about 5.29's even being available at this time. 4.88 were the only option for 3rd gen Tacos as far as I could tell. I must have missed the chatter if there ever was any of the Nitro 5:29's availability. It's truly a liberating feeling once you change gears, huh? Back in the 90's, I had an F150 with the 5.0, and something like 27" tires. I jacked that truck to the moon with a 3" body lift + 6" suspension lift, and 36" Swampers. Ran it this way for a few months and then regeared from 3:55 to 4:56 and that truck came back to life with extra ummph to boot!
Thanks Marcus. I looks like it was just this summer that the 5.29 thread got started. It never popped up in my view when I clicked on "New Posts". So far it looks like just a handful of folks have been swapped to 5.29, but all are AT guys. Looking forward to hearing how it feels with the MT (like I have).
Running 33's , Nitro 4.56 Gears, and Magnuson Supercharger, 2010 FJ, I am really enjoying the setup, Pulling a heavy Overland Teardrop, barely downshifts even going through the mountain passes. Very please with result.
It's too bad toyota doesnt do this stock, knowing people are going to do mods to the truck. Or at least make two models...one for people who keep the truck stock and for those who wanna change the tire size, add weight etc. Btw..love your tacoma
Thanks for the info. Video was good to watch. Not a bunch of jabber that wasn't related to the subject like some do. Keep it up. I'm from Lake Steven's so the area is very familiar.
Great video. Lots of misconceptions about gas mileage versus RPM. Every engine has a different power/torque vs rpm curve. When you map power/torque over a fuel consumption vs rpm you can see power efficiency over RPM. To get good fuel mileage you want to keep the engine in the RPM range that has the greatest power/torque efficiency. You derive the desired RPM from power/torque/fuel-consumption, not the other way around.
Max, first and foremost, your channel is awesome! It's given me tons of ideas for my taco as well. But I just finished watching your video that's on the cbi channel and as a fellow fireman down here in texas, I gotta ask. Where'd you get that notre dame fd shirt?! That thing is sick!
For daily driving 529 gears with 35 inch tires, is way over the top. If you wanted to increase your crawl ratio when going Offroad, you could have put in one of those dual transfer case mods. With both transfer case is in Lo you would have a crawl ratio around 200, but the truck would be way more drivable in hi, and 2 wheel drive.
@@Maxx.Powell that's surprising. I would think you would have some issues maintaining higher highway speeds without going into high RPMs. Especially if you drive a manual with its higher 6th speed gear ratio. In any case I'm glad it worked out for you. I'm on 33s, so I definitely won't go above 4.88. Maybe get a dual transfer case way down the road.
mo hawk The 6spd auto in the 3rd Gen Tacoma has a very high 5th and 6th gear. .69 and .58. With a stock unloaded truck this works well to keep low rpm’s as you do not require much power. With a modified truck, ie. heavier, more wind resistance, bigger tires and more rolling resistance, you need considerably more power. This means you need to run higher rpm to get that. It is just physics. Regearing to keep the same rpm as stock rig would not benefit the drivability or fuel economy. The transmission would just have to downshift to lower gears to get higher rpm’s and higher required power effectively losing a gear or two. There is a balance point and each vehicle and driving situation will differ. In the end more power costs more fuel, but getting to use all 6 gears allows the truck to always drive at the lowest rpm for the conditions and saves fuel compared to only having the use of 4 or 5 gears due to the wrong axle ratio for the conditions.
@@gregsheridan not considering the additional weight, and just going off tire size, and the drivetrain gearing ratios, to get back to stock RPMs with 35 inch tires, you would need a 4.56 differential gear. With 4.88 and 35, you would have some additional torque to handle the extra weight, but still stay relatively close to the stock RPMs. The problem is that people choose their gear ratios with a mistaken belief that it will give them more "power". Which it does not. All a regear does is determine how efficiently the crank shaft torque is translated to the torque at you tire. If you're regearing to get more power, you're doing the wrong mod, you need an engine mod for that. Of course you can go with an arbitrary large differential gear, but the cost of this is constantly running your engine at many hundreds RPM above what it was designed for. I can't see how this doesn't affect engine life, and to some extent drivability.
Where are you on the job? I’m a LT in Portland Maine. 22 years on the job. I drive a ‘17 Tacoma with. 2” OME lift, front winch bumper and Warn winch. I haven’t noticed any drag yet, but I have 33’s. Might have to look into the 5.29.
I traded in my 2017 TRD 4x4 that I had for 10months because of the gearing. It wouldn't tow my boat with our hunting for gears not a huge boat either. Got a Tundra...no issues now. I didn't regear it because I didn't want to void the warranty
yes, more than like true. I figure I was only pulling 3000lbs or so that Atkinson function going from a 6 cy to 4 cy mode was super annoying and using the manual mode made my rpms super high.
I just bought a 2019 TRD Off Road, and this is the first vid (and subsequent comment section) that I actually felt like engaging. You being from the Northwest made it even better. It's been tough finding a place online to discuss these things in a civil manner without the pretentious douche bags coming out of the woodwork screaming "mall crawler!" if I don't install a certain type of tire haha. I have no idea what direction I'm going to take my mods in, but this is something I'm definitely going to be looking into at some point. Even on my test drive, I can already tell that as much as I loved the truck, some of the "searching for gears" statements in this vid certainly felt validated. With all the "research" Ive done thus far, I know some changes will need to be made if I'm going to get the full potential out of my truck. I appreciate the vid. It was entertaining and informative. Subbed.
@@Maxx.Powell Thanks! That's good to know. The truck is still in transit from the factory, so I'll definitely make sure to bring that up when it arrives.
Thanks brother 😁. Although I'm not planning on putting armor or adding much weight to my truck, I'm sure I'll still benefit a lot from those 5.29 gears once they're installed 😎. Stoked that yours is running a whole lot better now 💪
I just purchased the 5.29 Nitro gears and the master install kit... $900. I'm doing the install because most reputable shops want $750 per diff... So $1500 for labor.
@Maxx Powell, Awesome video thanks for showing us your experience. I have a question though, where are your RPM's when doing 70mph? or 75mph? Thanks in advance.
I went from 2.73 gears to 4.10 gears in my mustang and it pulls hard af out of the hole. The best bang for your buck is gears hands down. My gas mileage stayed them same and sometimes worse but I’m on the throttle a lot more now. Top end didn’t kill me either.. I still went 152mph with 4.10 gears thanks to the 6 speed
@@FerRod2113 well mine do that too but it no fun when your spinning and not actually catching also if you have that high of gears and if you ever add boost you rev to damn fast to use it lol
Disclaimer, gearing is always a compromise. What you gain by going to a lower ratio, you give up on strength. That pinion head on a 5.29 is half the size as a 4.10 and less tooth on tooth contact. About the size of a golf ball. Just something to think about when choosing what's right for the individual.
@@turbomini89 long answer short is no. The lower the ratio, the easier it will be to break when compared to a higher ratio. One should still gear correctly for the setup, but like most things it comes at a cost.
Maxx, thanks for the post. I have been frustrated with the sluggish response from the engine/transmission (6-spd auto) marriage in my 3rd Gen Taco. This is my third Taco in 10 years and certainly the most disappointing. I am wondering if you have documented your RPMs at highway speeds for 4th, 5th and 6th gears with the new 5.29s? I have a 2017 Taco Off Road and am curious to know the RPMs in each of the three highest gears at 60, 70 & 80 MPH. I do a lot of highway driving for work and find myself camping in 4th gear at 77-78 (in 70 MPH speed zones) around 3300 RPMs so that my truck doesn't continuously hunt for gears with terrain changes while also giving me some ability to get around folks sleeping in the fast lane. I have been looking for a solution for nearly a year and a half now and am wondering if 5.29s would be the right direction.
I have a 2020 off road Tacoma and I’m interested in getting the 529 here’s my question can I run 529 with stock tires for now I do plan to upgrade to probably 33 will my engine be screaming down the road with stock tires. And also I do pull a trailer very often.
Maybe I need to regear.. almost traded my 17 in today. F150 has more power and way more towing capabilities for the same price. With more room and more luxurious options!
Yeah but it's a Ford and you'll take a huge loss just driving it off the lot. Keep the taco and get gearing and have something you can sell in a 10 years and actually put some cash in your pocket. Fords resale values blow not to mention the tacoma will cost you less while you own it.
I ran 4:88 on my first gen 2.7 with a manual transmission.....loved it with 35's a TJM from bumper and a custom rear with swing arm....it was def a huge improvement over the stock gears
Chip Schoff it would hold 70-80 on the interstate, but I never really drove it that much faster than that....I think if you Google i8aheep it'll show you some old photos of it maroon std cab with a swing out tire on the tailgate
I know this is an old video but next time I would suggest buying a Manual truck. I have 4.56 on my with 305’(34.54’) and zero issues going 100+ and wheel in’ like a beast.
Enjoyed the video. 2 months ago I got a 2018 Tacoma 4x4. I’m interested in doing the same thing. Where would I purchase the gears and when I take it to a shop about how much would a job like this cost. For me the searching for a gear thing is annoying. Any information you can pass on would be appreciated. Thanks
Is your sport a Manual or AT? Was wondering if you have the 8IN rear and what Nitro said about going with 5.29? Looks like I am a little late to the party.
what if I have a manual transmission and plan to install 35 tires - should I go for the 4.88s or 5.29 will appreciate a response. This is a great video, thank yo.
I'm also thinking about traveling to get gears installed. Any tips on breaking in the gears for the journey back? Lol seems like freeway driving is one thing to avoid. Did you just drive slow and stop frequently? Thanks!
I would have gone 5.29's, but only if the highway speeds were close to the peak volumetric efficiency of the motor. The difference in fuel economy wouldn't be to significant, but performance would be a huge difference.
That was the perfect time to do ARB or Harrop lockers. Did Just Differentials recommend using a thicker weight gear oil? I would recommend using synthetic even for the break-in.

Great video Maxx, keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing the Moab trip.
This is a great Video! I have a 2017 stock. I feel even the stock struggling often. I use the ECT Power more than I should just because it feels so much better. I'd like to make this change in the future to the 5.29. Thanks Max! Good Info.
Blue14 I do the same thing. Going to upgrade to 33s and hoping just using ect all the time will be sufficient and I think it will
Fuel efficiency of the engine is different at different rpms and also at different throttle positions, so its crazy complicated to know the best rpm to run as driving conditions are very dynamic.
It would probably be best to let the dealer flash the ECU like a new truck. It has the ability to "learn" driving styles.
I have seen that mechanic in 2 videos. He is the Diff Master, and cool!
Lol the Diff master 🤣
Being that you have a 2020 your ECU has updates alot of Tacomas on the road do not have. My 2016 Tacoma needed to be updated to fix this issue
Great video! I’m about to get myself some nitro gears! Really debating between the 4.88 and 5.29 though.
Me too... still debating.
Fuel
Mileage improved would be nice too, gas is outrageous
@@vietta3771 you end up doing a regear yet?
Love this video! Thank you so much for sharing! This was exactly what i was looking for.
Great video, getting the right gear setup can make all the difference!
Cool truck bro. I had a 2nd gen and rocked the world with it.
Truck sounds good and seems much more responsive. Good call.
This video is the exact reason I went from stock 3.07's to 4.88's on my Jeep. Congrats on getting your performance back!

What engine/transmission and tire size are you running? I'm still stock on my LJ with 33"

My 2021 tacoma sits on 33x 12.5. It don't hunt for gears and it runs great......no issues at all , alittle bump stear due to tire width. That's about it.
There is a 5.29 thread on TW. They have been available for several months.
Triad Expeditions that’s the perfect gear for 33s imho and experience.
what was the total cost involved with the gearing
It's too bad toyota doesnt do this stock, knowing people are going to do mods to the truck. Or at least make two models...one for people who keep the truck stock and for those who wanna change the tire size, add weight etc.
Btw..love your tacoma
Now with those gears the weight of a cap will be nothing, quality family truck mod right there 10/10 would recommend
Really helpful video man!!
Just experuencing the same problems with FJ, really considering regear it.
I appreciate your content.
Great video Maxx!!
Great video, thanks for sharing the info.
Like 7 people asked you what you paid for the upgrade I guess were never gonna find out ? Bummer deal
@Brian Morgan he doesn’t care unsubscribes
I didn’t know anyone responded to my post
Great video bro!
Great video and super informative, i'll be regearing mine to the same ratio with nitro when I do my 8 inch suspension lift with 33's
Sounds like a bad ass build man🍻
Thanks brother 😁. Although I'm not planning on putting armor or adding much weight to my truck, I'm sure I'll still benefit a lot from those 5.29 gears once they're installed 😎. Stoked that yours is running a whole lot better now 💪

@Maxx Powell, Awesome video thanks for showing us your experience. I have a question though, where are your RPM's when doing 70mph? or 75mph?
Thanks in advance.
Dang. Thought he was gonna say that 4.88 is great, but 5.29 is devine!

Maxx, Thanks for the info.
Question. Does the lower ration offset the need for strength at all? Wouldn't it be less stress because of the lower ratio?
@@turbomini89 long answer short is no. The lower the ratio, the easier it will be to break when compared to a higher ratio. One should still gear correctly for the setup, but like most things it comes at a cost.
Great vid bo
That's one sexy truck, if you ask me . I just got mine two months ago
I am wondering the same thing. Would love to know as I’m about to do this to mine.
I cant wait to do this to mine and then also get the ovtune. my stock Tacomas going to be fast
After the break in period on my gears, I feel they smoothed out even more after towing my trailer after a 2 way 20 min trip. I recommend
I live in Wenatchee and if you live where you drive up hills or passes the 5.29s are the right gears for stock motors and 35s.
I have a 2020 off road Tacoma and I’m interested in getting the 529 here’s my question can I run 529 with stock tires for now I do plan to upgrade to probably 33 will my engine be screaming down the road with stock tires. And also I do pull a trailer very often.
How’s the MPG before the regear ? And after ?
I went from 14 to 17 w/4.88 gears in a 16 4Runner. 22-2300 rpm @ 60
Best question in comments, I wish it would get answered...

I've got a similar set up with 33s that I'm planning to regear. Did the 4:88s still have some amount of top end speed?

I know this is an old video but next time I would suggest buying a Manual truck. I have 4.56 on my with 305’(34.54’) and zero issues going 100+ and wheel in’ like a beast.
Hey max did you get front lockers?
Enjoyed the video. 2 months ago I got a 2018 Tacoma 4x4. I’m interested in doing the same thing. Where would I purchase the gears and when I take it to a shop about how much would a job like this cost. For me the searching for a gear thing is annoying. Any information you can pass on would be appreciated. Thanks
Is your sport a Manual or AT? Was wondering if you have the 8IN rear and what Nitro said about going with 5.29? Looks like I am a little late to the party.
This is like a $6000 install on a 4x4. I just got the Toyota Torque Overland tune, and it fixed the problem he was complaining about.

Lolololol 😂
I’ve got 5:29’s in my Toyota with 35’s, it’s a little lower than stock ratios with the 31’s and it pulls great!
what if I have a manual transmission and plan to install 35 tires - should I go for the 4.88s or 5.29 will appreciate a response. This is a great video, thank yo.
Hey Maxx, maybe a ECU flash by OVTuning?
I'm also thinking about traveling to get gears installed. Any tips on breaking in the gears for the journey back? Lol seems like freeway driving is one thing to avoid. Did you just drive slow and stop frequently? Thanks!
That's amazing!
Good to know what you recommend, random commentor.
