Big fan of the big flat rock outcropping across from the redwood forest at 48/48. Sure there are some big bad dinos in the area but is real easy to wall off a big spot for your base because you can use the cliffs so you only need two walls. You're tight against the river so there is easy water access to build your greenhouse. While the land there is most barren, you are dead center of the map making for short trips for obsidian/crystal, metal and a jump across the river for honey and sap. The river is loaded with fish and the banks are full of easy kills for meat and hide. Also there's the added bonus that you don't get any shadows in your base (other than your own wall) so your lighted hours are extended a bit.
11:25 is my favorite location PVE, only downside is no 'water' deep enough for Breeding Sea Creatures. As a result the Red Obelisk when doing single player when I'm on my own is often one of my choices.
You forgot micro raptors and purlovia. I can avoid Thylacoleo if I’m watching the trees, or on a Parasaur. If I’m not on a Para, watching the trees, it’s the bloody other two that dismount and stun me. I am a fan of bringing wolves or raptors with me, to either meat shield or do something if they feel inclined. Lmao. Redwoods is Death.
Herbivore Island is my favorite place to build as well. I never understood why the devs don't make it a choice to spawn at. It would give you a "stranded in a desert island" sort of feel for your start.
Its a nice safe area for starting, and can get you into the metal era, but you only get around 2 stacks of metal per harvest of the entire island. Its also incredibly inconvenient to get dinos to and from. And is probably as far as possible from everything else that's important.
I'd like to see you build at the Redwoods Lake, I'd love to see how somebody other than me would build it. I built my base on the center Island & built walkways to all the different sides where I put dino storage & breeding , Greenhouse, & even tree platforms to keep some of my flyers. It turned out really amazing & the lake has a few areas where I was actually able to breed Megs & Basilosaurus... Just be careful because if you start killing/harvesting fish piranhas will spawn in, I always kept a couple Baryonyx on neutral just in case👍
I stopped building on 3 because alphas like to spawn pretty close (in the triangle of doom but right above the waterfall) to this amd the last time a did an alpha rex wiped all my dinos bred and tamed
I build around the scenery I like...waterfalls, beach area, but also the dinos I'm looking for...equus 46.0x50.7, thyla 61.1x33.8. I have a base on 29.2x54.6 peninsula, so there is a building with dino and behemoth gates and home base.
I'd be keen to see what you can do with that west coast location. I built on herbivore island and then went all the way there by raft to tame an argy. I ended up with 3 argies, a rex, a raptor and a sabretooth - it was a crowded raft home even with the argies following. Initially I was drawn to the double waterfall near the red obelisk which has some plateaus, but the noise of the waterfalls was driving me mad so I relocated to herby island, where a bronto fell in my pen and I then aggro'd it and it stepped easily over my base and squished some tames behind - the only brontos left now are tamed. I have obviously led a charmed life, I have travelled a lot by raft and only been attacked once and managed to outrun whatever it was! (JimKayaker)
I like building a few bases on the outer beaches called "shelters," each one with their own farming dinos for said area. That way, I can essentially go in any direction and find a place to go. For the most part, I keep them primitive and simple aside from maybe a generator for cryo storage. Because they're meant as temporary hideaways to do what you need to and move on. Aside from those, I have 2 main bases that are centralized, one being the Redwoods Lake Treehouse as a lot of my favorite dinos spawn there and I it's relatively easy to find. The other is by the mountain on the top right. For some reason, I have really good luck finding quetzel here, which is my personal platform mount of choice. Not only that, every resource is just in range from me here, and being by carnivore island cave is always a plus. Let me know what you think of my shelters, though. I'm curious to know if I'm the only one who does it
This idea works well for single player but if you were on a server you would need to be mindful about building too many outposts I think. I usually build myself temporary outposts outside of caves to farm artefacts/blueprints that way. If I'm on a server, once I'm done I clear the outpost and move on.
I build on the outcrop of rock that doesn't have the metal on. It should let you snap foundations there. If you are on an unofficial server there may be a setting turned on that stops you from placing foundations near to resource rich areas, which could be what is stopping you.
I cnt build there and the reason u r prob gettn tht noti aswell is cuz of the drop the spawns there. I can build around it but no on the ver top which bums me out and on council there rnt to many ways to go about fixn tht from wat Ive looked up
Biggest negative of herbivore island is that there are no carnivores and if u manage to tame one on the island. Its gonna be hell to transport it. I built my base on herbi island... early game was smooth af but nw that im around level 40. This area is just as good as it looks. Also there are no high level dinos here ._.
I personally don't mind the fact that Herbie Island is on the edge of the map and far away from other carnivores, I don't mind travelling to them. That said without cryopods at the start of Ark survival Ascended, I might change my opinion!
For the southern islets don’t put anything in the center of that pond because I tried to build there and had the same idea and the fish ate all my Dino’s so had to find a new place to go but it is still a very cool base location
Dino taming speed was done through single player settings before launching the save file in the game menu. Changing Dino levels in single player was done through the ini file. Luckily with the new ARK Survival Ascended, it's a lot easier to change these settings.
If you are looking for a Carnivore free area on The Island map, then Herbivore Island is your best bet. Most areas will require you to build an enclosure/walls to keep your dinos safe
If anyone will care the base that I made when I was a mobile player was at the beach at the far left with the little land outcropping and at the tip of that the beach to the right so it was connected to the main island and also was a terrible spot to base up But since it was mobile I bought the god console and just made my creatures fast as heck and it was all good. And now that Im on PC as of like 3 days ago I... still based up there and i know see just how bad it is even more now that everything is slow and low with stam. And thats why Im watching this video lol. Edit: I think the best base location after finishing the video is base 5 because its in the middle... seems obvious but its true
Honestly I think that herbivore island is my fav. The thing I dislike the most about Ark is the carnos, they always jump me at the wrong times. Another thing that I do to connect herbivore island to the rest of the map is use rafts to make a bridge, it takes less resources although I just use them because I’m lazy.
