logan atwood I absolutely loved my palm pre and so disappointed that WebOS just dropped off the face of the planet. I was hoping that when HP got a hold of it they'd bring it back with tablets. to date, IMO, WebOS is hands down the best OS.
***** I agree that they defiantly rushed into the market with the phone. And your point about the pre only being launched on sprint reminds me of how apple was with the iPhone all the way up until the 4. They kept the phone exclusively to AT&T which was a for sure dumb idea when you look at how the market for it has grown as of now.
logan atwood The Pre could've easily been the hot phone on the other 3 carriers, then licensing it would've been real serious competition to Apple. But No, Palm fucked it up until it was too late.
The Pre does in fact sync to exchange, gmail, pop3, yahoo and other mail servers. The contacts sync with those servers as well as facebook and linkedin. You can also apply patches to the Pre that customizes the icons, dock, launcher and other things, and the best part is that it doesn't break your warranty.
I'd like to point out a major mistake in this video. The quick launch on the palm pre is EASILY customized. You simply open the launcher, hover over the icon you'd like to remove, and drag and drop as you would if you were rearranging the icons on either the pre or the iphone. The pre allows you to use any four programs and the "launcher" button on the quick launch bar.
The first pre was really ahead of it time in term of OS. It's too bad the actually hardware sucked. Still I appreciated the effort and have the default Pre ringtone as my default ringtone on my current android phone.
1/2 You can custmize the bottom icons on the pre. Just hold and drag out one of the left 4 icons(not the laucher) to the menu and then you will have an open spot. Now you can drag any icon into that space. You can also get an onscreen keyboard for the pre. The 3gs/pre would be a better comparison but they are still pretty even. Both the 3gs and pre eat battery very quickly which is their biggest flaw. The iphone has good support after jailbreaking.
The important thing to remember is that you have to remove one of the bottom icons BEFORE adding another, or else it won't let you do it. (That's probably why the reviewer thought it couldn't be done.) But yes, it's absolutely customizable! My bottom four includes the Quick Dialer app, web browser, Tweed, and Feeds (RSS feed reader.)
you can't rely on one company to innovate. The more that are supported, the more innovation will come as a result. Palm deserves recognition for pulling off a VERY functional and pretty phone.
Great demo. Ive had the pre for 3 months and its worked flawlessly. It even survived being left out in a tropical storm. I had a treo before I had the pre so I was used to 3 day battery life and still getting used to having to charge it every night (the pre gets about 12-16 hours depending on usage) but the touchstone charging sweet. I also have an ipod touch and in comparison, i like most of the pre apps better. All in all, the pre rocks!
FYI.. You can change the icons on the PRE's 4 icon menu at the bottom of the screen.. SImply open up launcher, hold your finger on the icon you want to remove, and drag it in to launcher.. then tap and hold the icon you want to put on the menu bar and drag it in place. THE PRE IS AWESOME! I love the phone.
Thanks a lot for the video. I have the iPod Touch and, though I really like it, I don't want to leave my current carrier just to get the iPhone - I'm not too keen on ATT. My son suggested the Pre and this video helps compare the features I like. As I have the iTouch already, I'm not worried about losing out on games. I'll view your other videos to see additional features on the Pre. Thanks again.
I usually don't have more than 2 or three open at a time, if that. Multitasking is more of a convenience for me. But as far as battery is concerned, I have friends who own iPhones and we all agree that the battery life is about the same on both with regular daily use.
I have a Pre. It's an amazing machine. I think it's a blend between blackberry and iPhone. It has the business functions of blackberry and iPhone's entertainment. iPhone is a great machine but I think it leans more toward entertainment purposes. Microsoft Exchange, Google calendar, and facebook sync really well with Pre. It constantly update my calender on Pre. Really neat features if you work closely with Outlook or GMAIL calender. It brings all your busy scheudles into One.
I used to own an iPhone, and while it fills a niche for many people, it did not with me. I've owned my Palm Pre since June and am still in love with it. Best smartphone I've ever owned.
@@the_mariocrafter Lol, it's been 12 years since I commented on this. Haha, makes me finally feel old. I can't even remember our original convo. But I did own one of the Pre's. It was awesome. And I think it had a lot of innovation that current phones don't have. Sleep well, sweet prince.
Yes. Any jpg, and there's a zoom / center feature so you don't have to crop photos to exactly the pre's native desktop size. I have ceiling cat on mine.
When people ask me why I like the pre as opposed to the iPhone, I ask them several questions: 1. Can your iPhone multitask? (ie, listening to music WHILE you text or browse.) 2. Can you move ONLY the music/movies/pictures you want to simply by dragging and dropping? 3. Has YOUR iPhone exploded yet? 4. How much space does iTunes take on your PC, and how long does it take to transfer files?
Great review, I bought my pre on day one and my wife and sons a week later. We have had no problems and the only issue is battery life for my son whos always multitasking on his facebook and myspace and texting. Iphone is also a good phone. Competition is great for the consumer.
Lets not forget 8gb of internal storage, usb mass storage for fast transferring data, fully customizable ring tones so no need to download a ringtone when you can just use songs you already have, supports .aac media files so you can rip your cd and copy the music right over, fast searching by just typing on the keyboard it will locate applications, if it doesnt find them it will give the option of using google/maps, wiki and twitter, and software for developing your own custom applications!
I really like the iphone personally, and have been within an inch of buying one for a week now. The problem is AT&T. I will not go to a company that charges as much as they do for service, and also won't insure the phone. While the pre might not be quite as good in my opinion, it's close enough that I'll be choosing it under sprint. The day the iphone goes to sprint, I'll buy one.
Ok a couple things. First I'm sure someone has already said this but the 4 apps at the "home screen" of the Pre ARE able to be changed. For example I have the phone, messaging, web, notes, and launcher. And I do not think that Palm going with Sprint was a mistake. Sprint has by far the best plans- almost $100 a month less than a Verizon blackberry plan or a ATT Iphone plan for a family of 4. Also, Sprint has good coverage as well. And the touchstone? That is just awesome. Pre wins!
This was a good comparison video. I have been using iPhone since it first came out and I'm looking to defect. Reason is not because of the phone itself, but the Apple/AT&T business practice of piece-mealing what should have been in the first phone. i.e. voice dial, MMS.
The Pre plays the exact same video files as the iPhone. I took an entire 2 hour divx movie and converted it to iPhone Mp4 format using a popular iPhone converter tool and it played through the whole thing perfectly, with no quality issues whatsoever. The only thing that would have been better would be a larger screen like the iPhone. :)
pre has gps as well, you can also listen to music and watch videos (you don't need itunes to load media) games are in development though but a lot of ppl are taking advantage of the dev software to make there own games, so far ive seen all the usual games as well as doom and im sure there will be countless more to come. though i do say the phones are very very close
Multi-tasking is not that big of deal and you can do it on the iPhone, you can have music playing while sending an email while browsing the internet or maps or whatever, and push notifications is great so its not really that big of a deal to have multi-tasking. Why would you want to sacrifice battery life and performance for just having 4 different applications open on the pre which you could instead just close and go back to.
I rather use my BB Torch 9800. I know several people who rather have their Iphones. But I LOVE my Torch! The Palm Pre looks neat. We all have our own choices as to what smart phone we want. It is neat to watch videos like this one and to learn how different smart phones work and the difference between one or more smart phones. I am happy with my BB Torch 9800. Just go with the phone you like the best.
Pro Palm: -Better Touchscreen -physical Keyboard -Multitasking Contra Pre: -Smaller Display -Bluetooth Support is poor (at this moment) -Fewer Apps I own a Palm and I'm very happy with it. My boss owns an iPhone, it's nice too, but I think the Pre is more intuitive ans easier to handle. Just my oppinion
and the home icons on the home screen of the pre ARE NOT HARD SET you can very well change all of them except the app launch arrow, all you do is press and hold the icons to move them and re-arrange them
The spin of the screen could also be due to the page... And I like having a bigger screen on the iPhone. Also I prefer how the iPhone can sync to exchange and other mail servers. The palm pre does not. And with a jailbroken iPhone, you can increase the dock size, and customize.
my buddy has the Pre and I love it I seen the Pixi and I don't like the visible keyboard I like the Pre better but thanks for the advice I might just wait to see if Pre 2 will come out.
1 - Just as well really considering how hopeless the slide-out keyboard is. The first thing you do over the age of ten is turn off ANY vibrating keyboard, be it the iPhone or otherwise. 2- Twenty seconds to Jailbreak an iPhone results in you being able to do limitless possibilities with icons, themes and overall customisation (see Cydia). I suggest you research this! 3 - I refer to point two. 4 - You've got me! There are a multitude of reasons I'd prefer to live in the US but AT&T is not one.
For the most part is really was a good comparison. It just seemed to me that he likes the pre better and was trying to show how it was better and even when it was virtually the same or even a little toward the iPhone he would always way it's basically the same. Also, he should have shown the same web page with the accelerometer test. The Pre had a paged designed for phone use, the iPhone had a more data intense page to use.
He forgot to mention how the palm pre has a 3.2 megapixel camera vs. the iphones 2.0 megapixel. I also like where palm is going in terms of accessories for the pre. the touchstone charger is badass, and im sure they will be coming out with more unique accessories in the future. regardless of all of this, iphone still has the pre beat soley because of its app store. but the pre is still fairly new and should have more apps coming out in the future.
I was gonna get an EVO, but i had no contract upgrade, so that would cost quite a lot. But i went on eBay and got a Pre for $120, activated right away, and I love it!
Im pretty big against Apple, but when I got my iPhone I realized how incredible it was. The Pre may do alot of things right but for everything the Pre does so does the iPhone, and the design is sleeker and the 3Gs that I have is insanely fast. So much that I barely use my computer anymore. and having the 32 gig I use it no matter where I go or what I'm doing. The iPhone truly is an incredible piece of equipment. Although the Pre looks nifty.
Nice review. I say that it is very unbiased since the iphone is his personal phone. If there was a GSM version of the pre I wouldnt mind giving it a chance but since it is only CDMA i will just look at my iphone and go to a sprint store and fool around with a pre
i have a pre. like all smart phones, there will be quirks. ive spoken to iphone owners, and they report little quirks just as the pre does. i honestly really like the pre, and the only difference that there WAS, was that the pre didnt record video, which was the only thing the iphone had on pre, but with an update, the pre records video and even allows you to edit it (in length only) so theres really nothing that the iphone has over the pre, its simply personal preference now.
Here is an idea. Have two people preform 10 identical tasks. One has iPhone the other a palm pre. Then let them challenge each other in 10 different tasks. Allow the users at least 2 hours to prepair for the laundry list of tests.
The pre is amazing. The iphone took two generations just to have a damn camera. The lense on the camera for the pre is better than the iphone as well. The pre also has a flash and a real keyboard. Sprint also has a faster network than At&T. You also get turn by turn navigation with the pre. You do not get that with the iphone unless you pay an extra $10.99 a month. Just another way of AT&T charges it's customers for shitty service. HANDS DOWN, PRE WINS!
no, i made a comment about the iphone not really being cheaper then the palm pre. i guess in a way youre somewhat right about the iphone being cheaper at first., but not in the long run. at the end of your two year contract you will have spent less on the palm pre then you would have with the iphone. thanks so much
Pre is Linux based and isn't based on apples opinion of whats good. Anyone is welcome to develop for palm pre whether its an app a patch or a theme anyone can develop for the pre. The only thing iPhone has for it is the app store and the only reason there are so many apps is because the amount of time the app store has been around. Overtime pre will pass the apple store because of the homebrew apps, or apps that people can upload themselves and by-pass palms approval for the official catalog.
in a way i can agree the pre kills iphone with internet speed and more responsive touch screen as well as multitasking but the 3G S is faster with voice commands and alot of other stuff but come on give the pre a break its the first of its kind so hopefully later when the second gen. comes out it'll hopefully be waaaay better by the way how much is the pre even though u have a contract with sprint?
if you want to compare the rotation of the browser you should open the same site on both phones, because the site you opened on the iPhone is much bigger than the mobile optimized site on the pré so of course the iPhone needs some more time..
I do like the real keyboard on the pre, but it does seem rather cramped compared to the horizontal keyboard on iPhone 3.0. Also, the battery life wasn't mentioned about the pre. Would be good to know, as iPhone battery is relativley short, but bloody impressive really when u think about what it actually get out of it. Also, does the pre have a video camera? Stupid question but iPhone only just got one. Sent from my iPhone.
heres the problem with the pre. not as many apps. physical keyboard (thats just my personal preference), only 8gb, and the compute interface. When you want to upload songs or pictures to the iphone you can use itunes. Im not sure what the pre uses but nothing is simpler and more thought out then the way itunes syncs with the iphone. Just my personal opinion. The pre looks like a very nice phone. But i love Apples OS.
I dont know, its just much easier to use i feel. Also the buttons are tiny on the Palm, even in comaprison to a blackberrys buttons. i think the iphone is very user friendly, wheras the palm is a bit more for people who are good with phones. I doubt my dad would be able to use the palm wheras he can use the iPhone with ease
yes you can listen to music while you text and browse on the iPhone...and my iPhone multitasks with an app...but I hardly find myself doing that...and my trasfers go really fast on Itunes...
The reason for the iphone not multi tasking is for battery life. When jailbroken, you can multitask. But the big thing is apps. No other phone will compare to the apps on a iphone.
The Palm Pre is a nice and flawlessly designed phone. But as being an iPhone user would never switch to a Palm Pre. Which is why the Pre will never be comparable to the iPhone because the iPhone has been out for a much longer time and anyone with an iPhone would simply never downgrade to the Pre. Plus my iPhone is jailbroken and now has endlesssss possibilites to customization, try doin that with your Pre!
i agree man, all the phones will come and go and the iphone will still be there, still working without a broken qwerty keyboard and loads more apps coming every day
I have a palm pixi ... theres no slide out keyboard and its about the same size. without the slide out its much thinner. I love my palm pixi. Palm made some really great phones.
i just got the iphone and i am friekin lovin it. i was lookin at the pre in stores and i just thought the iphone had better features (app store, easy to access music library) i think the iphone is better than any other phone on the market
I love the pre, I am so glad I didn't jump on the iphone bandwagon. The keyboard is so easy to use. Sprint navigation replaced my old garmin GPS. And can run Pandora Radio at the same time. You can't even MMS on the iphone. My phone 3 years ago could do that.
The N97 is a decent phone granted, and compared to a standard iPhone I would probably go for it myself but I chose an iPhone because I knew what I was able to do with it having Jailbroken it. Jailbreaking it turns the phone into a different beast totally. My brother-in-law has a non-jailbroken iPhone and I would have gotten fed up with that a LONG time ago. Not being able to use multiple apps alone should put you off a standard iPhone.
The thing that bothers me is that iphone makes you sign with at&t to even get it. Plus the iphone like he said doesn't slide out with a keyboard OR multitask. Also i did some research on it and the Palm Pre updates everyones picture on your contact list based on their picture on facebook wich as AMAZING. I'm definately getting the Palm Pre tomorrow.
you can change the bottom icons by pressing the launcher button and then dragging those bottom icons into the launcher and swapping them out with other icons
During the keybd comparison everyone is forgetting that on the iPhone you lose close to 60% of the screen real estate and whopping 80% in landscape mode. Since we can basically just see one line, it's only good for tweets and not so much for emails.
the four bottom apps can be changed... All you have to do is bring up the launcher and drag the bottom ones up, then drag the ones from the launcher to the bottom... You can actually remove everything from the bottom (exept for the launcher of course) soooo yeah... I love the physical keyboard... Can't stand touchscreen keyboards... They piss me off sooo much
Hey, I got 2 questions, 1st. Can it record video or audio? Also, How many can u open with the multitasker? I just want to know before I get the phone :) Thanks!
It's all in your personal preferences. I enjoy a physical keyboard because I can "feel" that I've pressed a key. When typing on a virtual keyboard I always end up with more mistakes because my fat fingers hit multiple keys at once.
hey look 6 years later every phone has copied the palm pre
i love seeing these old videos, brings back a lot of good memories when phones became more advance!
Yes
So why does Apple keep patent trolling everyone when they got all their ideas from the palm pre/web OS?
Its amazing how much things have changed over the years. These two phones alone are my top two favorites of all time.
logan atwood I absolutely loved my palm pre and so disappointed that WebOS just dropped off the face of the planet. I was hoping that when HP got a hold of it they'd bring it back with tablets.

2022 lol
I remember when the palm pre was actually a thing lol now I have the 6 plus :)
Whatever happened to Palm?
They went bust and sold Web OS to LG which they now use in their smart TVs
I'd like to point out a major mistake in this video. The quick launch on the palm pre is EASILY customized. You simply open the launcher, hover over the icon you'd like to remove, and drag and drop as you would if you were rearranging the icons on either the pre or the iphone.
The pre allows you to use any four programs and the "launcher" button on the quick launch bar.
funny how iOS7 now uses swipe up to close apps from WebOs! 4 year old technology!
The palm also has a moving wallpaper when you tilt the phone, also included in iOS 7!
True! i'm a ios 7 user anyway!
LOL you sound so ignorant. 4 year old technology? you mean 4 year old animations!
And Android Pie & Queen Cake
The first pre was really ahead of it time in term of OS. It's too bad the actually hardware sucked. Still I appreciated the effort and have the default Pre ringtone as my default ringtone on my current android phone.

Nor sure if you updated with a correction but the PRE does have the ability the change the home keys at the bottom.
yes it is. just like most other phones you can set the background to one of the preloaded images, photos that you take yourself, or downloaded images.
FYI.. You can change the icons on the PRE's 4 icon menu at the bottom of the screen.. SImply open up launcher, hold your finger on the icon you want to remove, and drag it in to launcher.. then tap and hold the icon you want to put on the menu bar and drag it in place. Ghost orb at 2:52, sees the palm pre and instantly dips
I was gonna get an EVO, but i had no contract upgrade, so that would cost quite a lot. But i went on eBay and got a Pre for $120, activated right away, and I love it!
1:51 he spits on the palm pre screen
I remember wanting the Palm Pre so bad when I was in 6th grade at this time. Good times good times.

Although the Pre looks nifty.
u can also set up advanced gustures allows u to switch between cards by swiping the entire length of the gesture area
"Appreciate how small it is" LOL, wouldn't be saying that today
HANDS DOWN, PRE WINS!
fantastic video. i'm looking to buy either the pre or the htc hero and this gave me a great glimpse at the pre being used.
no, i made a comment about the iphone not really being cheaper then the palm pre. i guess in a way youre somewhat right about the iphone being cheaper at first., but not in the long run. at the end of your two year contract you will have spent less on the palm pre then you would have with the iphone.
thanks so much
Pre is Linux based and isn't based on apples opinion of whats good.
Nice work Jon4lakers
I do love the iPhone. It has its flaws but it does everything so much better :)
Great video.
5/5
Can't wait for the new line of Palm(HP) phones! My contract is up in December! :)
Pag.67 Palm Pre user manual:
You can cut or copy any editable text. Tap the text to insert the cursor-if the cursor appears,
you can edit the text.
Whens the pre-10 supposed to come out? Idk if I should keep my iPhone or not
The reason for the iphone not multi tasking is for battery life. When jailbroken, you can multitask. But the big thing is apps. No other phone will compare to the apps on a iphone.
this video was made before the 3gs came out. The 3gs still can't multitask, which is a big feature of the Pre.
Palm made some really great phones.
ya they are also missing Jailbreaking ( does virtually anything) and the palm was made by an apple worker so leave it at that
Notice on the Pre he only had 2-3 bars for Sprint service but on the iPhone he always had full bars.
i just got the iphone and i am friekin lovin it.
i was lookin at the pre in stores and i just thought the iphone had better features (app store, easy to access music library)
i think the iphone is better than any other phone on the market
if you didn't notice he is reviewing the PRE and using the iphone for a comparison. Thats not bias.
On the Palm Pre you can change the bottom buttons. Hold them and change them around or take them out. Pre is the better phone by far!!!
I would still use this phone today
I am using this phone today
The N97 is a decent phone granted, and compared to a standard iPhone I would probably go for it myself but I chose an iPhone because I knew what I was able to do with it having Jailbroken it.
Jailbreaking it turns the phone into a different beast totally.
My brother-in-law has a non-jailbroken iPhone and I would have gotten fed up with that a LONG time ago.
Not being able to use multiple apps alone should put you off a standard iPhone.
Excellent video review of the Palm Pre !
I'm really thinking to buy one...
U can deff customize the quik launch in the bottom of the pre all u do is hold the icon u want to switch and drag it to the launcher
you can change the bottom icons by pressing the launcher button and then dragging those bottom icons into the launcher and swapping them out with other icons
They piss me off sooo much
Palm Pre is nice but i love that new Palm Pixi! My iPhone broke so i currently have a Blackberry Bold 9700
Hey, I got 2 questions, 1st. Can it record video or audio? Also, How many can u open with the multitasker? I just want to know before I get the phone :)
Thanks!
I'm loving the form factor. When my contract is done, I know what I'm going to get.
It's all in your personal preferences. I enjoy a physical keyboard because I can "feel" that I've pressed a key. When typing on a virtual keyboard I always end up with more mistakes because my fat fingers hit multiple keys at once.
