Awesomely in depth Jon, I think alot of us take your videos for granted now, but thanks for the continued quality and depth of your reviews. Well earned 5 Stars.
When inputting text on the Palm Pre, John typed "Palm prw" on purpose since I can see he clearly hit the "w" button directly in the middle of the button the video. It was not a mistype.
Yeah I didn't even know if there was a confirmation about the contract or not. I get my new every two in April so most likely I will be getting the nexus.
while loading the youtube site, the pre switches between the edge and the 3g network a couple times, which might explain the slower loading...worth noting perhaps.
I have been an owner of the palm pre since its release, and the iphone I have used many times as it is a big favorite, I favor the palm pre as for the slide out keyboard you get used to ( i dont really understand what he was doing with the keyboard, it is accurate if you push the right keys ...) the only downside is the appstore, but the pre can run many different apps at once. It is also reliable when it comes to texting and email, the notifications are simple and easy.
I would have gotten the Pre Plus but since the Nexus One is coming I will most likely go with that. BUT if the iPhone comes out for Verizon this summer then I will wait to pick that up.
I have a Pre Plus and love it for the most part, but it is missing a few basic features that other smartphones (and regular phones) have such as Adobe Flash, Voice Dialing and some advanced Bluetooth features. Hopefully WebOS 2.0 will fix that if Verizon et al. ever get around to releasing it.
wow...what a long comparisson..but it was really nice...great vid jon....i have a concerc about the palm pixi...is it the same as the pre? except of course for the form factor.. i mean wath about the processor, graphics, etc.
Such a great video, thanks :) I'm actually ordering my palm pre plus on this coming tuesday and this video has totally reassured me that I've made the right choice :)
Thanks for responding. I actually went to Verizon yesterday with the intention of purchasing the the palm but the sales rep told me that on a scale of 1 to 10 he'd rate the phone a 4. So, of course I left the store confused and empty handed. Still in need of a phone...
the Pre Plus is from Verizon and has about double of almost everything that the Palm Pre from Sprint. So if the Pre had 500 MHz processor, then the Pre Plus would have about 1 GHz of processor speed.
Palm Pre is better because of multitasking, Flash web browser, physical keyboard, much better notifications (love Weather Dashboard app), and search. iPhone only has advantage of better app store, an advantage which is disappearing every day because 5 Twitter clients is enough, you don't need 40 or 50 to choose from. The Pre is the best multitasking mobile device. Love how when you start typing on the Pre it instantly brings up apps, contacts, option to search wikipedia, google, maps, twitter.
it has to be compared to the iphone, it deserves its popularity. There are millions of people who own one, people like to see comparisons with arguably the best phone in existence.
received the Palm pre as part of an upgrade. Mobile hotspot is free. Also, did not know alot about smartphones until I received my palm. I was initially disappointed when comparing to the droids and Iphones my colleagues had, but over time, I realized for business the phone is very very good. If i wanted a phone as a toy i would obviously go with the droid x or Iphone4 but the webos platform is second to none in multitasking and speed.
if you connect your pre plus into the computer. it will pull up in the finder section...drag your movies to the the pre plus tab on the left side of the finder. then eject. IM not sure how to use it on pc so if i didnt help you sorry
If you jailbreak your iphone now; it well be better then any phone on the market hands down, but I know it would not serve you well for review purposes but for personal use you can get everything that apple want allow like multitasking that looks just like palms.
I wish Palm would just license out WebOS to other companies to make phones. I really like how WebOS handles notifications and multitasking but it's being hindered and limited by Palm themselves. Who wouldn't love to see it on a phone like the HTC HD2?
the iPhone gives the user the ability to save any picture from the web and use as a wallpaper .. that too me .. is enough customization .. knowing that I can just go to Google Images for anything and have that as my wallpaper ..
You guys need to stop arguing Both of these devices are amazing My brother has a Palm Pre Plus and I have an iPhone 3GS. They both have their pros and cons. For the Palm pre's cons its the small sized keyboard, small screen and taking to long to load apps. For the iPhone its the OS and lack of multitasking. Pros for the palm is Multitasking and the WebOS. Pros for the iPhone is the Safari Browser and the App Store. There is no better phone, it all depends of your preference like jon said.
what r u guys talking about? in his iphone vs droid review he said the droid was better and im pretty sure in his iphone vs nexus one review he said the nexus one was better to...so hes obviously not biased
Oh and you said "they have pretty much the same processor and the same amount of ram" but thats only true with the original pre, the pre plus is double the ram of the original pre and iphone.
I want to go ahead and say that I don't see how you can think the iphone has the best browser on a mobile device. If nothing else the N900 should at least be ahead of the iphone, considering it's browser is actually a full web browser that works exactly like a desktop browser.
One thing I want someone to do is try the AT&T Palm Pre Plus and put it against the iPhone 3GS and see if there's a network difference. I always felt AT&T had a faster 3G network than Verizon.
Disagree strongly on the keyboard front. I type much faster on my Palm Pre than I ever did on my iPhone. You just have to get used to it. I'm 6'3" with rather big thumbs. Jon's also inaccurate about lack of customization on the Pre. SMS notification sounds for example CAN be customized (stock), and if you're interested in CRAZY customization, you can patch the Pre to do WHATEVER you want... to look like an iPhone, for instance! Again, having owned both I STRONGLY recommend the Palm Pre.
Palm Pre is not popular at all in Canada. Either you have a Blackberry or an iPhone. These two phones absolutely dominate the smart phone division in Canada. Blackberry Messenger is number one reason why Blackberry is so big for college students.
They don't the same amount of RAM. The Palm Pre Plus has 512 MBs, where the iPhone has 256 MBs. That's double, yo'. I do prefer the iPhone as well. But I do use MultiTasking like the Palm Pre (Jailbroke of course). It's quite BOSS.
white iphone definitely!!! no fingerprints so can use it without a case! i personally think it looks smarter too, i had the black 3g but i much prefer my white 3gs!
pretty neck to neck. i'd take the iphone simply for the applications. but i would not be dissapointed at all with the palm pre plus. both seem really competative. but by like 2% iPhone > Palm pre plus.
lol thought someone would say that, i can agree with what you say partly but theres many reviewers out there who still say the iphone has the best keyboard when they test tens of phones a month or whatever. some people will disagree though, which is fair enough :)
u know what i hated about the aple keyenote steve jobbs tried saying that all of his stuff was the best"we've created the best cell phone in the world"
I'm not saying it ISN'T the best, but you're partly biased because it's your primary device. I like the iphone keyboard, I only like the Nexus One's more because of the larger screen- I mean, how far can you improve on a virtual keyboard?
If iPhone 4th Gen hardware isn't as good or better than the Nexus One, I'm going to ditch my iPhone 3GS. Android is catching up fast, Apple iPhone OS updates have slowed to a crawl
Its actually funny how people are getting annoyed with Jon comparing it to the iPhone. The iPhone is THE biggest phone thats ever been and millions of people around the world have one, why not compare to it? Its staying put however annoyed people get with it, just live with it!
@xBayx650 I have to agree with you on the pros and cons. But I will have to say I like my phone best. The Nokia N900. 32 GB of memory plus 16 with sd card slot. Flash player, Maemo OS, and can run up to 30 apps at the same time (highest I've gotten so far). Downside is that it is a tech phone everything has to go through a menu of sorts. Also other little quirks that time getting use to. Like on the ATT network no 3g only edge. T-mobile you get full service.
his test with 3g sucks we clearly see that the pre signal is not always at 5 bars. also, he had already shown the pre's browser was faster by using the same wifi network
The Palm Pre Plus Can Have A Virtual Keyboard And It Gets 1,000 New Apps On The App Catalog Every 60 Days, webOS Also Updates Twice As Much As iOS Does, And The webOS Updates Bring You More Than The iOS Ones Do. The Palm Pre Plus Is Cheaper, Better And Looks Alot Nicer! Do I Need To Say Any More ?
@xBayx650 I have big hands and I can type very easily with the palm pre keyboard. so it all depends on how familiar you are with it. my previous phone was a blackberry and the palm keyboard is nearly as good as... so if that helps the argument about the keyboard a bit :)
Ye fair enough. I guess in many ways the keyboard is only as good as the hardware - touchscreen sensitivity, speed of which you can type etc. I just dont think a virutal keyboard could be better than the iphone personally.
I used to have a palm pre plus but that got stolen so I now got my moms old phone (iPhone 3GS) man I can't wait till this summer my contract is over and I'm getting an iPhone 5
i really like both phones i have att and i really want the iPhone but i never can get it. But i might got to verizon to and if i do im getting the palm pre or some other phone
Does the palm pre plus have flsh I saw a phone that looked exactly like it and that one had flah I was just wondering if it was the same one, This will help me decide which one to get. =)
not yet.. =) but soon enough 4g will blast away the competition just like it did since.. 2007 was it? when the first iPhone released? So maybe they messed up the iPad but the 4th Gen iPhone will definitely be worth it every single penny I'mma spend on it
the iphone is like 100 dollars a month without the xtra bells and whistles. It's a more expensive plan, but a super cool phone. i still like my palm pre. I think these are both great devides and agree with xBayb650.
@MrJustinb8 no, I am actually a very big fan of apple and i own an ipad and ipod touch and i really like them but they are really not good when it comes into making phones....
@woweeez suggest another smartphone that is equally as popular and good to benchmark against? Better yet your comparison/review video of this? No? surprise
It has over 1000 apps, and thats just in the app catalog, there are lots of homebrew apps too.
if you put the pre horizontal you can use the gesture area as a scroll bar
Yeah I didn't even know if there was a confirmation about the contract or not. I get my new every two in April so most likely I will be getting the nexus.
while loading the youtube site, the pre switches between the edge and the 3g network a couple times, which might explain the slower loading...worth noting perhaps.

I would have gotten the Pre Plus but since the Nexus One is coming I will most likely go with that. BUT if the iPhone comes out for Verizon this summer then I will wait to pick that up.
@LVkid89 Agreed. It is outdated but it did come out over 6 months ago. Such a great handset.
Those are are my two favorite phones. Have yet to get the Palm Pre.
great review of the phones. I'm still on the fence though. Pre plus or the droid
@xBayx650 That's just about what he said in the video: That he doesn't prefer one of them and that it's about personal preferences.
Yay I'm getting this phone. I have the LG Vu right now... getting a little outdated.
@chaplinshouse The palm pre plus running on verizon has clean and crisp call quality, which actually resembles a land line phones quality.
wow...what a long comparisson..but it was really nice...great vid jon....i have a concerc about the palm pixi...is it the same as the pre? except of course for the form factor.. i mean wath about the processor, graphics, etc.
Great video, Jon. I was actually debating over the Palm Pre and the BB Curve for Verizon. You definitely helped with my decision.
@BALLERSK actually, the palm pre got voted one of the nicest looking phones
Such a great video, thanks :) I'm actually ordering my palm pre plus on this coming tuesday and this video has totally reassured me that I've made the right choice :)
Thanks for responding. I actually went to Verizon yesterday with the intention of purchasing the the palm but the sales rep told me that on a scale of 1 to 10 he'd rate the phone a 4. So, of course I left the store confused and empty handed. Still in need of a phone...
the Pre Plus is from Verizon and has about double of almost everything that the Palm Pre from Sprint. So if the Pre had 500 MHz processor, then the Pre Plus would have about 1 GHz of processor speed.
once you go iphone, you dont go back..
Bought a iphone 2G couple years back and have had the 3G as well and now the 3GS and the 4G this summer. :)
Hold the icon, it should show a light ring around. And u can drag it around :)
I wish it was on purpose. I'm just not that accurate.
@Songediter2000
There are also rumors about AT&T getting the pre plus and pixi plus, except this time they're backed up with pictures.
it has to be compared to the iphone, it deserves its popularity. There are millions of people who own one, people like to see comparisons with arguably the best phone in existence.
received the Palm pre as part of an upgrade. Mobile hotspot is free. Also, did not know alot about smartphones until I received my palm. If i wanted a phone as a toy i would obviously go with the droid x or Iphone4 but the webos platform is second to none in multitasking and speed.
@themn04 Pre plus, as a phone its so much nicer in the way it works and the games are infinitely better as well.
if you connect your pre plus into the computer. it will pull up in the finder section...drag your movies to the the pre plus tab on the left side of the finder. then eject. IM not sure how to use it on pc so if i didnt help you sorry
thats great hairy, and jon, are you ever going to get a ipad?
i have palm pre and my brother has iphone AND WE BOTH AGREED MINE IS BETTER PRE ALSO HAS A ONSCREEN KEYBOARD FROM THE PREWARE APP
If you jailbreak your iphone now; it well be better then any phone on the market hands down, but I know it would not serve you well for review purposes but for personal use you can get everything that apple want allow like multitasking that looks just like palms.

good review and comparison. im leaning towards the palm pre to be honest.
jon!
do u rregret not getting the black iphone 3gs?
I think that the iPhone has somehow become the standard that phones should, unfairly, be compared too.
@FOBloveaddict14 It's actually ALREADY on AT&T.
the iPhone gives the user the ability to save any picture from the web and use as a wallpaper ..
that too me .. is enough customization ..
knowing that I can just go to Google Images for anything and have that as my wallpaper ..
when the new iphone comes out is there a discount you can get if you trade your 3gs in for it?
You guys need to stop arguing
Both of these devices are amazing
My brother has a Palm Pre Plus and I have an iPhone 3GS. They both have their pros and cons. For the Palm pre's cons its the small sized keyboard, small screen and taking to long to load apps. @NGMboy935 well, with earbuds in. the speakers aren't very loud.
Oh and you said "they have pretty much the same processor and the same amount of ram" but thats only true with the original pre, the pre plus is double the ram of the original pre and iphone.

LOL his voice is so funny at the beginning
Disagree strongly on the keyboard front. I type much faster on my Palm Pre than I ever did on my iPhone. You just have to get used to it. I'm 6'3" with rather big thumbs.

Again, having owned both I STRONGLY recommend the Palm Pre.
Yea, i tried the Palm Pre Plus' keyboard at Verizon today, i wrote a long sentence, with only typing h twice on one word. I love its keyboard.
Time constraints? I'm sorry you talked about the 2 phones for nearly the length of a tv show....
Palm Pre is not popular at all in Canada. Either you have a Blackberry or an iPhone. These two phones absolutely dominate the smart phone division in Canada. Blackberry Messenger is number one reason why Blackberry is so big for college students.

what phone should i get
white iphone definitely!!! no fingerprints so can use it without a case! i personally think it looks smarter too, i had the black 3g but i much prefer my white 3gs!
Yup. Absolutely correct.
waiting for the palm pre plus in Spain. Definitly better than the iphone. Multitasking is essential nowadays
ya im thinking about that because i really like the the palm pixi to so idk what to do i like three diffrent phone right now from verizon.
pretty neck to neck.
i'd take the iphone simply for the applications.
but i would not be dissapointed at all with the palm pre plus. both seem really competative.

lol thought someone would say that, i can agree with what you say partly but theres many reviewers out there who still say the iphone has the best keyboard when they test tens of phones a month or whatever. some people will disagree though, which is fair enough :)
The pre now runs on AT&T, so their speed should be the same currently. Pre is better for gamers and teens, iphone is more for business.
do u rregret not getting the blakc?
question... does the palm pre have an onscreen keyboard as well?
u know what i hated about the aple keyenote steve jobbs tried saying that all of his stuff was the best"we've created the best cell phone in the world"
i thought that it was pretty well known at&t is faster but verizon supposedly has more coverage
At 9:15 he clearly missed the "E" in "PRE" on purpose.
@BALLERSK Ya so you dont feel like your carrying around a book in your pocket all day
I'm not saying it ISN'T the best, but you're partly biased because it's your primary device. I like the iphone keyboard, I only like the Nexus One's more because of the larger screen- I mean, how far can you improve on a virtual keyboard?
looks lik tat, the browser speed is almost corresponded to the screen size.....like hd2, big screen----a bit longer waiting duration...
No matter how bad you hate the iphone it revolutionized the smartphone market and that will be hard to beat
Its staying put however annoyed people get with it, just live with it!
im absolutely rapid at typing on my iphone now lol guess thats what 2 years of use does to you! :P best keyboard on any phone IMO
you should do this comparison with the palm pre plus after web os 1.4 w/ flash
@xBayx650 I have to agree with you on the pros and cons. But I will have to say I like my phone best. The Nokia N900. 32 GB of memory plus 16 with sd card slot. which one u guys prefer
the BLACK or WHITE iphone?
im a guy
Nice Comparison Jon
Does the palm pre plus have flsh I saw a phone that looked exactly like it and that one had flah I was just wondering if it was the same one, This will help me decide which one to get. =)

My iPhone 3gs shows the checkerboard all the time...
because its one of the leading phones out there
Should I get the Motorola Droid or the Nexus?
if you wanna be different, get white
I personally think black looks better... it makes it look thinner too
I hate when Jon says certain phones are hot when they aren't.
Checkerboarding on pre happens since the kinetic scrolling is much faster, while 3gs is slow as fook.
the iphone is like 100 dollars a month without the xtra bells and whistles. It's a more expensive plan, but a super cool phone. i still like my palm pre. I think these are both great devides and agree with xBayb650.

Better yet your comparison/review video of this?
No? surprise
jon with the new nexus one native browser having multi touch now, which browser do you like better? android/webos/osx?
Yeah how could it not be a smartphone?
Nothing wrong with it but he sounds Canadian. Go Pre Plus!
My mom's I phone does the check board thing too.
he gets them for free to review
The only thing I hate about the pre is that you can't add memory.
how can you compare writing????? u've been writing on an iphone for close to 3 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
