      Why would anyone want to be a "good photographer"? I mean instead of just being able to get the kind of photos you want, independent of how "good" you are. Do you care about being a good toilet flusher? Or do you just care that the toilet does what it should?

    I don't understand how you say, "the viewfinder is too damn small compared to the X-T3". The Nikon Z5 has a 0.8x magnification compared to the smaller 0.75x magnification on the Fuji X-T3 or the even smaller 0.62x on the X-T30.

    The d750 was pretty good in low light when it came out (most definitly better then x-t3 at iso 6400 and 12.800 and Im a fuji user, check the studio comparison tool at dp review). Also I checked the eye relief on the x-t30 and the Z5. The eye relief looks alot better on the z5 then on x-t30. Battery life is better then the a7 iii which says alot. AF is on par with latest z6 firmware, so its fast enough. I don't know why these items are listed as negatives by Ken honoustly. Perhaps ill switch to z5 if nikon survives and enough third party lenses will come out :)

    I just got my Z5 two days ago and I also have a D750 that has never been recalled. I plan to enjoy both for years to come. I will keep the D750 as well as my older D7100 due to both having an in body screw focus motor as I have several Nikon lenses that use that. FTZ adapter is working flawlessly with my F mount lenses that don't use the in body screw focus motor. I got my Z5 for a great deal including the FTZ and the typical kit lens.

      Many of Nikon's cameras made in the last 6-7 years are up to about the same IQ as the Z5. I mean if I was buying new (no prior camera) I would get the Z5 over the D750 (mainly for the IBIS and size/weight), but if cost was a concern, you can get a used D750 for around $700-$800 and you'd still have a very good camera for stills that's still considered quite good even by today's standards (6 years later).

  • @kennygo8300

    Almost a year has passed... I bought the Z5 in late spring of 2021 for $999 (camera only). I'm really happy with the camera for that price. The 24-200 kit lens that came with it is VERY nice. $1600 as a kit. I feel like a got a good deal. Do I still take my D7200 out on photo walks?... yes. My old DSLR is still my favorite camera. I'll warm up to the Z5. It's not because it isn't a good camera, it's because I prefer DSLRs. Since I don't play with a lot of different brands, I foolishly think the focus peaking is fine with my vintage lenses. Starting in the 70s shooting manual film cameras gave me a LOT of practice, so maybe I don't have a problem because I don't rely too much on the crutch of peaking. That said... the Z5 is for people like me, that want a full frame camera for landscape shots that they spend some time preparing, but don't want to spend 3 grand on a high-res sensor.

    At $1300 for doing general photography (not sports or wildlife) the Z5 is a great choice if you want to get started in full frame in the Nikon line. Obviously, the Z6/Z7 will give you more options and a bit better IQ but as you mentioned, they cost more (especially the Z7). I mean the Z5 looks like a great backup / travel camera, especially with its dual card slots. But for the price, it's a good deal and offers much of what you'd get from the Z6 but with a few exceptions (such as it being a regular CMOS sensor vs BSI but for most general work, that may not be noticeable). The other notable differences are the lack of the top LCD plate (which for some, is not a big deal or deal breaker) and the slow burst speed (again if you're not shooting wildlife / sports / events, this probably doesn't matter).

    Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain!

  • @madmanjoe

    I don't think its a negative that the sensor is the same as D750. Looking at DxO sensor database, you can see that the D750 compares very well to much newer cameras with excellent dynamic range and low light performance. I dont understand why its important if a sensor is BSI or not. What matters is the actual image quality in practice, who gives a shit about BSI or not BSI.

    Hmm. This is not the proper way to review a new camera in 2020. You're suppose to spend the whole video Only talking about how eye AF compares to the $5k Sony A9II or a Canon R5. Of course, just say "Sony, or Canon autofocus" without ever mentioning which camera or price. That's the proper way to review a camera in 2020. :) . . . But nice review Ken. Great review, but... the Z5 sensor has phase detect elements on it, so there's no way it's the "same sensor" as the one in the D750. However, that doesn't mean that its dynamic range and ISO sensitivity is any better.

    So for adapted manual focus lenses…. Focus peaking on this camera and Z6, Z6II… how do they compare to a much cheaper used Nikon D610, 700 series or even 800 series? I have a D300s and want to move to full frame. I currently use manual adapted lenses and focus with the viewfinder black box/green dot lower left for I think contrast… I get good results but looking for full frame and newer DSLR improvements over D300s…. Or a Z6? Z6II with focus peaking? If I choose to do more video with it, the D series is lacking today but I think can still be workable in Flat profile to later match my BMPCC4K… or go with a Z6 or newer with my Atomos and shoot N-Log externally. But again, I’ll be using this as 75% for stills.. but good video occcasinally would be a bonus…. So focus peaking of these new Z series vs DSLR green dot….?

      I like ken but he has had an axe to grind with the d750 and keeps pointing at past recalls that have 0 relevance to the current d750 units. You can check your serial number before buying one and see if it was on the nikon recall list. Nikon also replaced the parts of the impacted units when this happened year and years ago. I bought two nikon d750'd s and absolutely love them. They do amazingly well and are awesome when it comes to image noise. Ken loved comparing the xt-3 to the d750. I tried the xt-3 before buying the d750 and the d750 outshined the xt-3 in image noise and also low light focusing for me. I mainly shoot weddings and went with the d750 for that reason. I think ken is on a fuji kick and unfortunately it has tainted his view of the nikon line. Nikon has had some issues meeting the needs of the mirrorless market and was late to the party but are now trying to catch up. I can 100% say you will have a hard time finding a better camera with dual card slots to beat the d750 for low noise image quality and value.

    One thing I"m a little confused on is you say that the low light sucks basically at 18:55 but then you say it's not that bad. I think you're exact words are "This ain't no street camera, sucky, it's dated it's not really bad". So, which one is it? From what I see elsewhere up to about ISO 3200/6400 it's not that bad.

    Had xh1, xt3, xt4 and xt5. Sold them all due to inconsistent af and generally noticeably lower overall IQ compared to Nikon full frame dslr like d850. Bought z5 snd it's much better in every way af, albeit slow, always on point, eyes in focus and sharp, high iso very good ca 2.5 times better than apsc Fuji and on pair with BSi full frame sensors
    Dr amazing
    Focus peaking very good no issues at all using 135mm AI f/2 same as xt5
    I actually like fuji bodies but output and AF SUCKS

    Just snagged a refurbished one from Adorama for $999 as a backup shooter to my D4S in the field/as a travel camera and it plays that role excellently. I would never use it as my primary shooter, the D4S is still king, but for just quick shots with decent output, the Z5 is perfect, especially if you already have a bunch of F-mount glass. And I agree with most everything in the review except the shutter noise--I actually think it's quite quiet, but that's coming from a D800/D4s.

    The one thing I would like to see Nikon do is change how exposure compensation is adjusted. Something simple as making the exposure compensation button a toggle button (or a setting that lets you set it to be "locked" where you wouldn't have to press it each time you wanted to change the exposure compensation). Having the button have two states: locked and unlocked would make workflow a lot faster I think, and it 's something they really could do in firmware alone without having to redesign any of the hardware. Say, in the settings, you can set up the exposure comp button so that if you long press the button for more than 3 seconds or longer, it "locks" the button (same as if you held the button down) so you could then switch exposure compensation more easily without having to do the press + hold function). And then to unlock the button you just press the exposure compensation button again and it unlocks it and returns the rear command dial to back to shutter speed control. This I think would be a welcome faeture and again, something they can probably add via a firmware update and that's one feature I liked about Fuji's "multiple mode" dials where you can assign and press the front/rear dials in to activate different modes/settings assigned to those dials (like the front dial can be assigned to control aperature, exposure compensation or ISO depending on how you have the three modes for the front command dial set up).

Fujifilm cameras aren't very well supported by lens makers, so why mention it? How many times do you have to use the word "cheap" at $1400? Clearly not a Nikon fan, but to sell Fujifilm as the top contender is nearly criminal. And at what price-point is the Z5 being compared? What gear ecosystem is in the same price range? *crickets*

First one had it a couple weeks and realized I really don’t need it since I the 500. Didn’t keep it. A couple months later wanted it again. Realized again my D500 can do whatever I want the D850 to do, so I sold it after a couple months. Figure my D3s will do anything I ask of a FF camera which isn’t much. I can’t find anyone (including the mega-subscriber duo, the buy-my-tee-shirt star, the artsy-craftsy guys, and the on-the-sidelines-I’ll-be-at-100K-subs-soon techno specialists) who has a clear, coherent presentation on sensor ISO, analog ISO amplification, digital ISO amplification, and software ISO amplification. So I can tell (when it comes to sensors, ISO, image dynamic range, etc.) each “expert” has a grasp of but SOME of the necessary concepts.

What confused me was what you said about the EVF. I own a Z50 and i am totally happy with its EVF. I even use it with both eyes open without any problems. Unfortunatly i can only compare it to the OVFs of my D5100 and D700. I like it more then the OVF of the D5100 but even compared to the D700s OVF i do not miss anything. As far as i understood the EVF of the Z5 is the same as the one of the other Fx Z cameras (Z6/7/6ii/7ii). Maybe it is only the eye relief? I don't wear glasses btw.
    If it is not only the eye relief i shoud defenetly test out a Fuji camera. I think after this damn corona thing is over i will go to a local store and check these cameras out ;)

      I would buy the Z5 for stills only (and if price is important) and the Z6 for hybrid. Z5 has a massive crop in video.
      I own a Fuji X-H1 and in my opinion (testing them next to each other) die Z6 EVF is better. The X-H1 EVF is great but the Z6 viewfinder was a few months ago the best of all cameras I tried (much better than Sony A7III). I don't like the X-H1 eye cap but the X-T4's is different. (and you could change it)
      DPREVIEW (that Ken probably also doesn't like) still recommends the Z6 I as best hybrid camera (before having tested the Z6 II) and gave the Z5 an gold award.

    How can they do autofocus on a d750 sensor. Mirrorless sensors must include focusing phase detection elements, so this is a new sensor which is less expensive than a bsi sensor. I suppose you think that Nikon can send the old sensors back to the fab to have the phase detect added. Not sure I agree but you seem convinced that Nikon is recycling the d750 sensor. The evf is the same as the z6/z7 and I find it to be better than the Sony a7iii and canon m50. I wear glasses so I have to adjust the diopter without my glasses, which works on the z cameras but did not work for me on the d750. I agree it's a bit more difficult with glasses, but that's down to my eyes and not the camera. Do you honestly think you are being fair to Nikon with this review, or promoting your bias. I guess you understand your audience so it's not for me to comment.

    For hand-held shots using the Nikon Z5 with IBIS turned on paired with the FTZ adapter and Nikkor 200-500mm lens with VR on, would this combination be significantly more stabilized than with the same lens on a non IBIS camera such as the D750?

    • @HR-wd6cw
      @HR-wd6cw 3 года назад

      At those FLs I'd say it woulidn't matter. IBIS really only helps at shorter FLs and with native lenses. I mean it can't hurt, but probably won't help as much as you think it will. But then again, it sounds like you might be wanting to wildlife... get the Z6 instead. Faster burst rate and better IQ IMO (at higher ISOs).

    • @HR-wd6cw
      @HR-wd6cw 4 года назад

      The D780 isn't that revolutionary either and I see it more as a plea from Nikon to keep DSLR fans from jumping to Canon or something like that, or moving to Sony ML. It's a way to keep them in the system until Nikon can get the Z sorted out. But in reality, for another $200 you can now buy a new D850 which would be a better buy. So much more camera than the D780 for $200 more.

      @@HR-wd6cw i never needed more than 24mp so why spend more.? more data more stress, yes the autofocus could be better for D850 but i never had issue with my d750 either so i think for price you get better live view performance which i use more now in canon. but again it can be subjective the feel of camera and justification of price, i use Canon 90D now and very impressive for price though.

    Thank you for this video. I liked it. I am a d750 user mainly do photos no videos. I am very happy with it but I think eye detect AF and IBIS will increase my speed of capturing moments and and have more keepers. My main lens is Nikon 24-70 2.8g. I purchased a z5 yesterday. I thought that on Z5 it will work at least as good as it worked on D750 for photos. In good light it is true. But in low light most of my pictures are blurry. I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong. I use eye detect in AFS and AFC mode. Very frustrating. It finds eye well but the review of picture show that eye was not sharp. Did you experience anything similar? Any suggestion from you will be much appreciated. Thanks.
