Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain! Loved your review thoroughly! Subbed! Cheers from India!
Fitting a DX lens onto a DF body always felt like a massive compromise, however this body seems to invite the option and get the advantage of light weight and compact shooting of movies and stills with a D750 class sensor (a sensor that still gets the job done) when detailed work is demanded.
Thanks for the nice review guys. It was the final kicker that made me pick up a Z5 to replace my XT-3 system. It all has exceeded my expectations. Love the ergonomics; super comfortable, easy customization and menus. Image quality and performance is top drawer with the 50 1.8 S and 24-70 4 S. I liked the Fuji but always found myself fiddling with it instead of just enjoying taking photos.
Bryan, watching Z5 reviews because I have an X-T3 and also find myself fiddling and frustrated with the Menu system. I love the dials and build but handled a Z5 in a store today and found it extremely comfortable. Any thoughts/suggestions you have now that you have a little more time with your Z5? Thank you kindly...
@@NBPT428 Hi Bill! I really like the Z system, still love the feel of the Z5 and the lenses are excellent. Image quality and colour is superb! One thing though is that I hike a lot and I feel the extra weight and bulk of full frame after being out all day. We also love to travel so I'm thinking of when travel opens up. What is it going to be like walking the streets of towns in Europe or on a beach somewhere warm? I know that I would love the image results but the heft and size of full frame has me thinking again. I had a brief thought of picking up a Z50 but the Z lenses are big. I'd really love to just have one system. I may try out an X-S10. A friend of mine sold his X-T2 and got one. He tells me for handling and comfort it is a lot better. He has setup custom tabs in the menu so he's not hunting as much through the menu and has the buttons customized to his liking. I still have my 18-55, so I may give it a try.
@@bryansarty3821 Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking of getting an X-E4 as a 2nd body to the X-T3 for street/travel purposes. If I use my 18-55mm and my 35mm f2 with it, the whole package is small and weighs just over 2lbs. Controls and features aren't up to the X-S10 but with some Menu customization like your friends X-T2, it may not be bad. Still love the Z-5 but the weight/size of the lenses is still bugging me. The 1.7X crop is a real bummer...but what if you used the Z5 strictly as a 1080p camera? Is the quality serviceable? It was hard to tell from the small amount of 1080p footage. How does the HD footage compare to, say, a Sony a7 II, which is available for much less money? I think the Z5 could be a compelling choice for wedding photographers who dabble a little in video. It's a full-frame camera with dual SD card slots and IBIS. I don't think most couples are super picky about their wedding video being in 4K and showing every little blemish if the 1080p quality is decent. 1080p is not dead.
Currently, a used Z6 body and new Z5 body are both about USD 1000. For a casual photographer not interested in fast burst rates, or higher end video capabilities, it seems the main advantage will be BSI. The higher price of xqd cards for the Z6 vs much cheaper SD cards for the Z5 seems to be a major disadvantage, perhaps not worth the BSI, and in reality increase the price by about 100$ or so (more if you have more than one card). Any other advantages/disadvantages to consider between a used Z6 over a new Z5 as an entry into full-frame mirrorless? Any thoughts will be appreciated.
I love my Z5-no complaints. What do we really need in a digital stills body? this has it. I shoot Fuji and a lot of film on the F80 and Pentax MX but the Z5 is what I have made many of my personal fave photos on.
The problem here in the UK is the Z6 with ftz adapter on the grey market is £300 less than a Z5 with adapter from a typical online store. I do wish Nikon would enable 1080 backup - this really would make this a great events camera.
I’ve had my x-e2 for almost 10yrs and the cost of upgrading to an x-t5 is insane, so I decided to make the jump to full frame with a used Z5. First thing is I’m gonna have a heck of a learning curve😂.
Nikon did a great job in positioning this camera. This is THE entry level FF from Nikon at a VERY reasonable price vs performance. As stated in the video, it does 99% of what the target market will use it for.
Nikon did a great job with this one. There's no reason to buy a more expensive Fuji X-T4 or X-Pro series when you can get an excellent full frame for so much cheaper.
As an update now 11 months later... have purchased one of these. About the only thing i Feel they maybe struggle with is wildlife (but only in some instances) and video. But beyond that, they are much the same as the Z6/Z6 II minus the technical differences (BSI sensor, faster burst rate on the Z6/Z6 II, and no video crop in some cases for the Z6/Z6 II). But for a stills shooter wanting a budget backup camera, or a beginner FF camera, this is a great option . Of course the sales have now ended and it's back up to $1300 USD, but even so, it's not a bad deal. If you need the burst rate, you can certainly go with the Z6 but you're losing the dual SD card slots (plus you likely might have to buy XQD memory cards, which are still a bit costly these days). I will say that I'm impressed with the Z5, even more so with the latest firmware updates which puts it closer to that of the Z6 (in terms of AF speed performance which was the Z5's biggest drawback at release).
The shot at 8:02 forced me to pause for over a minute. Light, shadow, depth, curves and textures framed together in an organic whole. Still picturing it in my mind.
For a full frame that price is not bad and its great fishing Camera. Its in the price range of my Sony a6600.(but I got mine at a lower price) I can't wait until Camera Conspiracies gets his hands on one.
This is my dilemma - Im a Nikon hybrid shooter, both theses cameras would work for me as I only really shoot 1080 for social media. Its the native lenses that are much cheaper on the Sony system.
@SwitchRich yes agreed - the big thing with Nikons is how quick they switch from photo to video whilst automatically saving your last settings. Im often asked to shoot both and Nikon makes this very easy compared to other brands.
@SwitchRich if you watch enough reviews where the reviewer has experience of both systems they'll confirm what Im saying including Chris Nichols here at Dpreview. The video/photo switch on Nikons is so simple to use - its difficult to get over to people who haven't used it in a working day when you're going back and forth all day. Its one of those functions that can be key but you can't put on a spec list.
I've been binging fishing videos lately so when I clicked this to get my camera fill I thought I clicked the wrong video :) Nice change of scenery. Also suggest to Mr Drake to grease that reel ;)
Nope. I used the Z5 for two weddings with the Z6 and the D780. After 1800 shots I can tell you the autofocus is not as snappy as the Z6 (yes I was using Z lenses). It doesn't gather light as quickly for autofocus in stills and AF-C. Shame as it was the perfect backup.
Thanks for this input. I really want an opinion from other wedding photogs. What's exactly the problem with the Z5? Does it miss focus more often than the D780 or it's just slower?
@@Revan89 Not sure what this person is going on about. Locks focus super fast, way faster in good light, but in low light it's still good. It has literally the same AF system as the Z6, the only different is BSI sensor, which doesn't matter much for stills, matters more so for low light AF video.
I think Nikon did awesome here. If you don’t need the fast fps or video I think this is an amazing camera. I am a previous A7iii owner for 3 years. Great camera also but Nikon: 1) amazing evf 2) fantastic ergonomics 3) weather sealing 4) Reliable tracking and af (latest af test/ dpreview.com) 5) snapbridge for easy sharing. Better than sony 6) beginner features like timelapse in camera etc Richard Wong video z6 vs z5 dynamic range : Better shadow recovery. Z6 shows stripes and green cast. Overall a great camera
Daniel Dougan Correct, but not what I meant. The Z5 stitches the clips for u into a timelapse in camera. Great for beginners who does not want or need the flexibility on computer
Hopefully Nikon steps up their video game. I’m a MFT refugee and lenses like the Z 24-200 f4-6.3 in full frame are the closest thing we have to the 12-100 Olympus.
Is mft still a safe place? I'm looking for a replacement camera. Fuji is nice and feature packed, but lenses are going to cost me almost the same as full frame. Mft has got some good things like IBIS, but... they seem to be dying out.
I tried a Z5 in the store, and given the price, it's a decent camera, but I still like having the top-deck plate on my Z6, plus a few other things. But the Z5 is a good option if you don't want to spend the extra $400 but you want dual card slots. It's probably a step up from the D750 but a step below the Z6 (mainly because of the lack of a BSI sensor in the Z5, and it's burst shooting rate is rather slow--slower than the D750 actually).
Hi, which microphones are you using for this video? The sound of Chris is excellent and very impressive considering the background noise on a oat or in the streets. The sound of Jordan not as much, but still good refelecting what is going on at the same time :)
I'm researching what I want my next camera system to be since it looks like Canon is pretty much done with the EOS M system I currently own. I thought I would stay with APS-C, but this camera is really tempting for the price point. I'm looking for something with a good standard zoom (which EOS M has always lacked), and the Z5 can now be had with the 24-70 f/4 for under $1900. The main thing I'm contending with is how much I care about size. Even APS-C with a fast standard zoom is fairly bulky, with the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 being the one exception. Either way I'm going to be spending in the $2000 range minus whatever I get for my current system. Decisions, decisions...
I have a Z5. It randomly overexposes. I switch it on, the EVF is almost white, I switch it off and back on, and then it exposes correctly. Nikon says that it has no fault. I’m also underwhelmed by the AF - it loses focus on a virtually static subject. And it can’t focus properly with a Samyang 85/f1.4 (unlike my D7500, which has no problem - strictly my 2nd D7500: the 1st being so defective it has to be replaced). I’ve owned 6 Nikon digital cameras and this is the third that’s had a fault - at least Nikon accepted the other two were faulty. Now they are in denial. Trouble is, when you’ve got a full set of Nikon lenses, you’re rather stuffed. It’s a shame, because it’s a nice size and weight, and the 14-30 and 24-200 are a good pair of landscape lenses. Perhaps it’s just typical of modern digital stuff - they rush it out and hope there aren’t too many bugs. No wonder driverless cars are an abject failure.
For what it is, at its price point, it’s good. I wouldn’t use it for paid events as the 4K is not great with that crop. Great IQ. Overall good for what it offers including IBIS
There's one thing this camera doesn't have that the D750 has....a proper vertical with a shutter button. That's a bit of a deal killer for me. I guess the Z6II will be my best option
Great video on the Nilon Z5! I have owned it for a year now and love it! Have the ftz adaptor and use some of my sigma f mount lenses. I bought it with the kit lens! Would like to invest in another z lens for it!
Unless you shoot sports or birding, or anything that requires FPS higher than in any Sony APS-C mirrorless ever made. Even 2010's NEX-3 premiered with 7fps. And Canon's high end APS-C shoots nearly 3x as fast. And then there's video...
Thanks for the review! Hope that Nikon sells a billion of them. I loved my D750 when I had it. The kit lens focal length is a bit baffling though. Is the lens that much cheaper than the Panasonic 20-60mm kit lens for the S5???
Actually it would be great if the Nikon Z5 had a flip out screen like on the Nikon D5500 and that the Nikon Z5 had unlimited recording time limit even in 8 bit.
Not for street photography. Yes, for video. Wish they could make one for street and another version for video, but then the added cost.... oh well. I can see how it lacks for video shooters.
I need some advice. I am an indie filmmaker preparing to shoot my first feature length movie: A found footage movie set entirely in the woods. I need a camera that can shoot high quality 4K footage, has a build-in gimbal for great stabilization, and good autofocus (maybe a touch screen). I am not concerned with tons and tons of different options and settings. What would you recommend?
Besides another great review, kudos to bringing Ivy to it! Everything felt so natural and family-linked, as if we were all neighbours or friends. I'm a father too and it's great when our kids can be part of what we do and love. About the video itself, still wondering if june 2023 is the right time for a Z5 or expect a possible Z5 mk2, since it seems too outdated, even when compared to a Z50! Thanks again
which part of Z5 is outdated? It is absolutely the best option for stills photographers which don't want to spend a fortune to get great image quality. It has highly modern features. Z5ii is not rumored this year, most probably we won't see one in the near future.
@@Blitz_Shorts except for the focusing system, my D750 is still better and we’re talking about an older camera. Z5 is called entry level, though it doesn’t have a built in flash. Burst? 4fps… Screen doesn’t flip. Video 4K cropped. Pricy as f… So even the z50 is better in some features. Now, if you’re ok with all that, great. After all, that’s how some companies make money. I can wait. Thanks for your input
Good morning because of your videos I bought a Nikon z5 so I'm wondering that it's heating up mainly on the underside, even the bass got hot today when I went to use it, I took the same one where I bought it, they kept the camera and they brought it back they said it was normal Did your model get hot? I'm waiting for hugs!!!
Can I just suggest...while you did say it is shot with the S1H can those footages has a small text overlay when the footage is used by different cameras. that way you can mix the footages and we can see the differences more easily for video.
The Z5 is much more expensive than the Canon RP, maybe the Canon R is a better point of reference? I am sure the Z5 is a very good camera and won’t disappoint
Noticing on my new Z5 that the EVF playback is quite noisy in indoor shots!!! Bad camera? or is that true of all of them? Is the z6 any better? i know that they use the same EVF so it's a little concerning
Why has it suddenly become that you need XQD or CFe for higher framerate cameras? I had a Pentax K-3, also 24MP, that did 8fps and could do so for about 3 seconds, and that’s an old camera. Similar with the Nikon D7500, and that can shoot longer iirc. Unless manufacturers are cutting costs by reducing the amount of buffer memory, I don’t see it.
Looks like a reasonable camera though a little overpriced (at launch) compared to the competition. I'd be interested to see a video of you using the Z5 with the FZ adapter and some F-mount Nikkors, as I'm sure many Nikon owners might buy this camera as a step into the Nikon mirrorless system from DSLRs...
The Z5 is very enticing for a photographer only. There are more Nikkor Z lenses than Canon RF lenses at the lower end right now... well $850 USD. Canon right now only has mostly higher end lenses and their budget Full-frame the EOS RP, does not compare. I have never been I Nikon user, but this might be the camera. Other option is the S5, but still steeper in price and the lack of lower end Lumix lenses. I have a Panasonic G9 and really love everything about the function of the camera. Hmmmm

And finally I have purchased Z5 today and it is so so so awesome..!!
@@TheCommonManOnWheels congrats on your purchase.
At what price did u purchase
I have the Z5 as a backup to my Z6II and I love it . It’s a great camera at a great price .
Just bought the 24/200 4-6.3 vr for my Z5. helpfull info which no one will test. I mounted the lens and proceeded to accidently dropped the whole rig (never dropped a camera in my life). good fall off a table and on to hardwood floor. no issues, checked it all out. good for you Nikon!
Chris & Jordan love the family element that you often bring to your videos. Keep up the great work.
I bought z5 last week. Love it.
I like Jordan's go In Baby Image Stabilisation. 😀😆
Thanks for the feedback!!
@@NBPT428 Hi Bill,
I ended up picking up an open box X-S10 and an on sale XF 16-80. I am really enjoying this setup. Light weight, pretty compact, quick to use.
Though I hate to do it I’m going to put the Z5 and the 2 lenses up for sale.
@@bryansarty3821 That sounds like a great setup. Good luck with it and hats off to you for trying the Z5. Probably hard to let it go but we can never change the weight and size of our equipment. Often thought of cashing in my 18-55mm for 16-80mm and going down to two zooms. (have 18-55/55-200/70-300+1.4tc now). Enjoy your new gear!!
OMG your daughter is so cute! To hell with the review, didn't hear a word you said - didn't need to - BIG thumbs up for this video! With WFH, most of us are dealing with non ideal work conditions and I love the way you carried on with the video tending to your daughter as well
i assume you haven't watched any of the recent Thecamerastore videos. His wife often has their daughter with her while doing camera reviews.
Nikon has 24-200mm, not 240mm..
Nevertheless, nice video..
Best camera review channel on youtube. Thanks guys.
Nikon did a great job in positioning this camera. This is THE entry level FF from Nikon at a VERY reasonable price vs performance. As stated in the video, it does 99% of what the target market will use it for.
Seems like a great value buy
Im really glad that I bought dpreview 2 recommended cameras before they closed first canon m200 second nikon z5 I never dissapoint with dpreview
Love these fishing/camera reviews
The shot at 8:02 forced me to pause for over a minute. Light, shadow, depth, curves and textures framed together in an organic whole. Still picturing it in my mind.
For a full frame that price is not bad and its great fishing Camera. Its in the price range of my Sony a6600.(but I got mine at a lower price)
I can't wait until Camera Conspiracies gets his hands on one.
OMG THAT GORGEOUS BABY!!! Great job, Ev! (with an assist from Jordan, lol)
This better than Canon’s entry-level full frame camera in nearly every way. It really is a shame how Canon wields the cripple hammer.
Oh man, can't wait to get it. Hope you can make a compare video, with the Nikon Z5 and Sony A7c. Love you guys muchly.
Im often asked to shoot both and Nikon makes this very easy compared to other brands.
you can work around shortcomings of Nikon (AF, burst rate and even video) but cant do anything about Sony (ergonomics and viewfinder).
@SwitchRich You don't have to go into video mode on Sony to record video. The record button works at all times.
It sounds pretty good to me. I certainly hope it works for Nikon. I don't own one, but I like the look of them.
for photography, would you reccomend a Z5 over let's say a similarly priced crop sensor camera body like the Fuji X-T4 or a Sony A6600?
How long is that line?! Chris: Let's see if anyone notices how long I can keep reeling in😋🤣 great review as always fellas! 👍🏻

I've been binging fishing videos lately so when I clicked this to get my camera fill I thought I clicked the wrong video :) Nice change of scenery.
Also suggest to Mr Drake to grease that reel ;)
This combined with the NIKKOR 26mm f2.8 pancake is a dream combo for travel ❤
Ivy has graduated from microphone holder with her mom to full blown co-host with her dad. LOL
Even in a hazy day, it still producing kinda good colors and sharpness.
I think Nikon did awesome here.
If you don’t need the fast fps or video
I think this is an amazing camera.
I am a previous A7iii owner for 3 years. Great camera also but Nikon:
1) amazing evf
2) fantastic ergonomics
3) weather sealing
4) Reliable tracking and af (latest af test/ dpreview.com)
5) snapbridge for easy sharing. Better than sony
6) beginner features like timelapse in camera etc
Richard Wong video z6 vs z5 dynamic range :
Better shadow recovery. Z6 shows stripes and green cast.
Overall a great camera
Sony added a timelapse mode to the a7 III in a firmware update. It should have been there all along, but at least they corrected that omission.
Help!!! Buying my first camera..this Z5 or Fujifilm X-S10?
1:20 love the fake fishing shot. Nice try Chris. :)
BSI sensor is over rated completely. The new Canon R5 and R6 cameras are incredible and do not use BSI sensors.
BSI sensor - image quality is difficult to see. I have both Z6 and Z5. At Lower ISO Z5 is better. Higher. ISO Z6 is better starting 3200
Chris, Jordan, what was this filmed with? Is it on your GH5s? I am not sure what changed for your colors, but the quality seems to be suuuuperb!
have to say that i'm a fan of Jordan's daughter, what a cutie 😄
Hmm 🤔
The Z5 is the best entry level full frame mirrorless, makes many aps-c cameras redundant.
That Panasonic kit lens is quite something, I guess the advantage on the Nikon one is the weight and the size.
Gonna miss you guys
Great review. Thanks for making this video. I am thinking about getting a Z5.
Hey Chris and Jordan, do you think going from d750 to z5 is a good switch?
Actually it would be great if the Nikon Z5 had a flip out screen like on the Nikon D5500 and that the Nikon Z5 had unlimited recording time limit even in 8 bit.
Not for street photography. Yes, for video. Wish they could make one for street and another version for video, but then the added cost.... oh well. I can see how it lacks for video shooters.
She’s the cutest Jordan. Good work!
Love the fishing trip. Love the working dad section. You guys rock
I would say, the Nikon Z6 is the best, budget-friendly video camera out right now.
the Z5 and Z6 are basically the same price at many stores right now
Not in the US
Not in the United States of India too
Not in Russia, here Z6 costs basically 1.5 times more.
Not in Pakistan either. A whole 600 dollar difference.
ktg619 it is in us check adorama the z6 refurbished from nikon is the same price as this
Chris how are you hair always this good ?
In my country the Sony A7 Mark 1 is still available for half the price. Do you think it would be a significant step back in performance?
Actually, this is a follow up review of Panasonic S1H.
Impressive videography ability.

Try Mepps spinner, size 5 Black Fury or other colorations depending on the light conditions...the best spinner I ever used. Pike cannot resist it.
Can I just suggest...while you did say it is shot with the S1H can those footages has a small text overlay when the footage is used by different cameras. that way you can mix the footages and we can see the differences more easily for video.
If only Nikon thew a lens adaptor into the deal I would buy one.
You may catch a deal like that on black friday
could we say that the video quality on the z5 is the same as the z50?
Dpreview, Chris, Jordan, a cool new 📷, instant click
The Z5 is much more expensive than the Canon RP, maybe the Canon R is a better point of reference? I am sure the Z5 is a very good camera and won’t disappoint
Noticing on my new Z5 that the EVF playback is quite noisy in indoor shots!!! Bad camera? or is that true of all of them? Is the z6 any better? i know that they use the same EVF so it's a little concerning
Why is this not the best selling camera? Affordable and have everything a still photographer needs.
Because people must follow the Market….
How can you be a world clas photographer with an entry level body 🙃🙂
I'm excited to get this camera when I can afford it. I'm gonna need a different lens than the kit one 🙄
I hope you'll have a new video comparing Z5 vs. Z6 II soo. Great video.
Maybe pit it up against the Panasonic S5?
Looks like a reasonable camera though a little overpriced (at launch) compared to the competition. I'd be interested to see a video of you using the Z5 with the FZ adapter and some F-mount Nikkors, as I'm sure many Nikon owners might buy this camera as a step into the Nikon mirrorless system from DSLRs...
It's literally the fullest featured camera at its launch price.
The F mount lenses work perfect on this camera with the FTZ adapter.
Hey Chris whats the lens you are using on the Z5 at the end of this video?
the video quality on the boat was out of this world...
what lens for the video ? very clear.
Great camera for the price! Maybe superior to Sony A7c or Panasonic S5
Great review
z5 is the mirrorless d750, like it
and the daughter father scen is cute
well d750 its just better even than z6
A great review, but the highlight of the video is Jordan with his daughter. Great job.
Hmmmm
Nice camera, but why does it cost the same as the Z6? I just do not get it?
