Nearly 50% of people have had SD cards fail? WTF are you guys doing to your SD cards, or what cheap cards are you buying. I've never had an SD card fail after many years shooting weddings and normal portrait shoots. Have we just had amazing luck?
As a studio news cameraman for many years I recommend you stop down your cameras to avoid all the miss focus. It's distracting.. After all whats the point of desk props if there going to be out of focus? The standards used in television production are that way because they work the best.
XQD / CFExrpress has much faster error checking and write checking redundancies built in compared to SD. Speed & Heat is dictated by the interface's bandwidth with XQD having a much broader data pipe so more can be written to more locations simultaneously resulting in a faster speed (think mulit-lane highway vs 2 laned road). Packed transistors is more a matter of storage capacity vs card size. There's also secondary characteristics to consider like the heat dissipation of the card materials and the ruggedness to things like torsion and crush resistance.
Believe or not with a Techart autofocus adapter you can use Sony e-mount lenses on Nikon z series camera bodies without loosing autofocus or focus to infinity. Of course the autofocus isn't as fast as with e-mount cameras but is good enough. The flange focal distance of Nikon Z mount lenses is very short 16mm. Any lens designed for cameras with focal distance longer than 16mm, can be used with adapter on Nikon Z mount camera bodies. That is an important advantage of Z mount cameras that is rarely brought to light.
What adapter are you referring to? I was considering an a7iii/a7iv, or XT4 from Fuji, but I'm seriously looking at the Z5 because I like the images it produces and it fits my budget.
The Z5 is a good jump into the Z-line, and a move to full frame. The Z6 is probably going to be replaced with the Z6s, and then the lineup will make more sense. The Z5 is for folks (like me) who want to move up, and into the Z line of lenses.
We have a z6 and a z50. We bought the z50 for the flip down screen to make vlogging easier, and its super light to carry around (we go to themeparks and stuff a lot). The z5 is going to be awesome for sure, and a great entry into full frame mirrorless
Paul Jones yeah I think they messed up not including IBIS for sure since all the other z lenses have no image stabilization. We love the camera - it fits our needs but I do think you’re right about the price point.
I will upgrade my D750 with Z5 for IBIS and electronic viewfinder and ergonomics + 2 card slots for me its enough feature to move on and all my 35,58,85 would have IS now Wow.
@@PunjabiGymBeats not sure whether its an upgrade though...I have the 750 and am considering Sony because the results in movie and stills look sharper, autofocus and other things are better...better future...only wish for the flip out screen on the A73
Guys you´re getting it wrong.....the real deal of this camera is: in a matter of months it will be $1200 body with the adapter... then this camera is the biggest win of the year
Name ONE adapter that doesn't negatively affect focus. ONE. It's a tempting idea, to re-use legacy glass, but it's very hard to dial in lenses designed for mirror on mirrorless body. Remember we talking millisecond realm. Extra contact points and processing does affect performance no matter sales pitch.
@@geeeee8268 ... what extra processing? There isn't any for Canon to Canon adapters, it is merely a physical connection, there is no extra chip inside. For adapters that need to translate between protocols are a different story, but the same brand models all seem to speak the same language as the lens.
@@geeeee8268 if it's a native first party adapter it really doesn't matter. The issue isn't the extra "contact points and processing" electrical signals are fast and modern processors are faster/better than whatever those lenses were designed for to begin with. Anywhom, back to the OP... $1200 for this camera still feels overpriced. Why wouldn't someone just buy the $900 Canon RP?
BROis because they have $4k in Nikon lenses... also, first party adapters don’t do any translation as they already speak the same language, in fact, they actually speak it way faster as well. The limit will be the old lenses AF speed and accuracy, not the camera and adapter. Everyone remembers their bad experience with crap adapters on Sony bodies with third party lenses which is a totally different case.
After using the Z5, I would put it this way Z6 / A7 III (toss up based on features you need/use) > Z5 > RP (the A7III and the Z6 I would say are similar, although the Z6 may have a slight upper hand because it is newer and probably uses a newer sensor design).
@@adrianfaulkner1353 you're generalizing his point. He doesn't say all dslrs and all phones. He doesn't say every single characteristic of image quality. You're fighting against a point he never made
@@ancogbernard Ah, that's a different discussion :-) I was pointing out that Tony had originally incorrectly presented the Z6 as having one SD card slot, which is factually incorrect. Not sure if Tony has since corrected that.
Remember guys that the biggest market for this camera is existing Nikon DSLR users that might be looking to try mirrorless. They are already heavily invested in the Nikon system with Nikon F lenses (FF or APSC) and are used to Nikon ergonomics. They might be a pro looking for a second / backup body. They aren’t even interested in changing systems, thus aren’t even looking at Sony or Canon. PS... this is a HUGE market!
@@Dstinct A Tamron rep confirmed that they are working on lenses for the Z mount and RF mount so we could be looking at options in 2021 for both Nikon and Canon.
If I'm shooting Nikon and looking for a mirrorless body, I'm getting the Z6. All around better performance for just a couple hundred bucks more, but wait, there's an adapter included so I can use all my F glass too. That adapter alone costs about a hundred bucks so if you get the Z5 and add the adapter, the diff is just a hundred bucks. And when you consider this is just a 2nd body, is a second card slot really that important? Hell, no!!!
Then they should include the FTZ with that $1400 price point. Z5+FTZ $1650 VS Z6+FTZ (with XQD and other goodies from B&H) $1850. Heck you can even get the Sony A7II for about $900 I understand its not fair to compare launch price with street price, but still. Z5+FTZ for 1650.....hmmmmmmmmmm. If I want to switch soon, then I don't think Z5 makes much sense.
@@s87343jim Yes that's the only problem for me, too & that is the most terrible thing Nikon did to this camera. I will get Z5 as soon as I am able to buy it at 100000 INR(Just under 1400$) or slightly less with FTZ bundle.
My Z7 blows me away with its amazing quality every time I use it. I'm glad they have a cheaper Z system camera which is more affordable, and allows people to experience the new lenses. They're probably not making a fuss because they're sick of everyone whining about everything they do. If I'd listen to all the criticism, I wouldn't own the Z7, which I absolutely love. My poor old D4 just sits on the shelf now.
@@joshuameadows4165 Yeah, had one in my D4 for 5+ years and it never failed. I never bothered using the second slot for a backup in the D4, so it was no big deal for me that the Z7 only had one XQD. As you say, very reliable especially if you take good care of them.
The d750 has a non-BSI sensor so I expect the Z5 will produce equally glorious IQ assuming the on - chip AF doesn't interfere too much. I'm looking forward to seeing a Z 70 200 F4
I really don't get it how these people criticize its fps. It is just the Z6, without back side illuminiating, so you don't use it for extrem low light, and reduced speed, so you don't use it for extrem fast motion captures. You guys shooting sports birds and concerts with a $1.4k entry body? To me this body is perfect for my application that I've been looking for one. It is cheap so on my off days/after work I can just throw it in the bag, not worrying too much about it being damaged compared to my workhorse gear that I earn income with, bring the camera with me everywhere, messing around, experiment/enjoy shooting. Anything semi-serious, including shooting for family outings/company event I'd bring a more pro body as that would be something involving other people that I have to answer to. For all other low key personal noodling around this is the perfect match. And this is thus a perfect entry body to a lot of people as well.
James Jin i’ve had my Nikon Z5 for the past three days comparing it to the Nikon Z6. The image quality in my eyes are identical and I tested it up to ISO 5000 on each camera taking the same picture. If you don’t do video this is a perfect camera. If you shoot sports or wildlife photography like birds in flight you will want a faster FPS camera. I bought it solely to do weddings for the dual card slots. And grabbing 2 128gb Lexar professional uhs-ii cards was 3 times cheaper then buying 1 xqd card. So I would recommend it.
@@jamalpurvis Yes, that's Canon, Fuji, Sony and everyone else. They all have their moments of drifting in and out of focus. The EOS R is much better than the RP in this regard and the new R5 is way ahead of both.
@@cooloox I have seen Tony have this in almost all his videos. I think the problem isn't the camera, I think he sets his f stop too low so he is moving around and keeping a super shallow depth of field. He has said it looks more professional but I don't see how it look pro of he is going in and out of focus. He needs to set it to f/2.8 or f/4 if he is going to be that close to the camera.
So far I’ve owned Canon,Nikon,Sony & fujifilm. I could use them all with no problem but they all seemed to have something that bugged me. With canon it was the oversimplification of the menus Nikon was good but didn’t have and evf at the time. Sony was a good fit until the shutter broke after a year and a half. Fujifilm had by far the worst ergonomics and user experience in high pressure situations.(photojournalism) I’m looking forward to the z5 but I’m planning on buying the lumix s1 first.
@@akivabernstein4723 Wow! I am still on the A7s OG. These new cameras have a lot, too much. With so many features a bit of your soul gets lost, it's a never ending quest I feel. There is something about having to use the imagination to overcome the cameras limitations
I am keeping my D750 as a work horse that just gets the job done for photos. However I would pick a Z6 over a Z5 anyday as a second camera or for video. 4K for full width and higher fps, bsi sensor makes a z6 a better choice ... for me anyway. Nice that Nikon has a lower priced FF camera for enthusiasts anyway.
I have a D750 and D500 that I continue to like. They do the job I bought them for. But it's hard not to get excited about these cameras. I don't really need one. But. I'm going to be really interested in seeing what the Z6s autofocus is like.
The problem is the lenses. Nikon used to be the enthusiast camera per excellence. The 1.8 G lenses were equal or better to anything in the price range. You could build a pretty good system with new lenses at a nice price, or you can build a super cheap system using D glass and a used body. Nikon prices for the S lenses with no stabilization are far off. Nikon can't compete for long with the top of the lines Sony and Canon Machines, I don't know if they have the capital to do it in the future. Fix the glass or help Tamron or Sigma introduce lenses for the platform. Sony was smart in that sense. I am not talking about 200$ but 500$. One option will keep the lens prices but sale a set of primes: 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm all for 1500$
I'd go with the Z5 since I'd take the saving and the two card slots. The whole video thing doesn't really float my boat so the Z6 would be wasted on me.
Here in England it costs £1719 with the kit lens and the A73 is £1699 on sale or £1549 body only, The RP is £1200 body only for reference WIth the severe crop, and lack luster burst, and no 120fps I don't think it measures up with the huge UK price tag
These are stills cameras. Most people don't care about the video crop (which the RP also has) or the slow motion shooting. The ergonomics, menus and usability of the Nikons is infinitely better than the Sonys. That counts for a lot more in real world use.
@@youknowwho9247 it still has a slow stills FPS which makes it lacking for sports or wildlife and I think the Sony still has better AF and eye AF implementation. I just don't think it holds up against the RP or A73 and ergonomics/ease of use etc are entirely subjective Also the whole *it's a stills camera* thing doesn't mean it has to have a crap video mode, especially when it's no cheaper than the other cameras , if it was £1000 then I'd agree but there are plenty of budget / first time shooters who would want both functions, I also think the kit lens is pretty mediocre (I mean they are for all the FF cameras which is a shame)
@@shadowpandapc This is obviously not meant to compete directly with the a7 III in the jack of all trades segment. Being priced at 1400 on release puts it 600 below the Sony on release. Once the price for the Z5 comes down it'll likely be a sub $1000 entry level full frame option. As such, it's expected to not be well suited for sports and action shooting. Seems to me like they're aiming for the casual hobbyist travel shooter with this model, especially given the tiny kit lens. For that audience I can see this being more popular than the Sony.
Yes but if you saw what I said about UK pricing you can see it's no cheaper here than the current A73 and it's a lot more than the RP So it's *value* is severely demolished when I can get an A73 for the same price Comparing it to the price at launch is irrelevant you have to see where if fits into the market right now to a buyer If it comes down to £1000 I'd 100% agree but I don't see it happening myself, that's a big drop and if they want to reclaim market share price at launch should have been their smoking gun
@@shadowpandapc You've missed my point. I wasn't arguing that it's good value now, I was pointing to the fact that cameras, particularly Nikon's recent models, tend to drop in price quickly after launch. So yes, at the current 1400 bucks it's not a great deal. But at 1000ish it will be.
I shoot with Nikon D4. The flexibility it gives me in my editing usually makes my clients think I'm using the newest most expensive most capable camera in existence!
I just upgraded to the Nikon Z50 from a D5600. I am SO happy with it. Perfect size, good user interface, light lenses and excellent video and AF. I was afraid that the slow lenses would be an issue but the camera performs really good in low light. I honestly think it must be one of the best cameras in its class right now.
4:10 the reason why sd cards fail is because they can only read up to 120mbps and 4k needs 144mbps so when it is trying to write that from the camera to the card it will and can corupt cards
Strawberry Kiys it is terrible ... and he did a video on how good the Canon is for this very purpose. Does he not review his own videos on a 4K monitor? It simply does not work for the purpose he is advocating. Plenty of other RUclipsrs have setups that work.
Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain! Cheers from India!
It's funny but I think that with these specs this is actually a camera that doesn't really need two cards. It seems like a solid affordable student camera or for a wanna be fashion or street photographer.
1st :Z6 has XQD card and not SD, XQD cards have far less failure then SD. 2cond : your side camera keeps on hunting, kinda annoying :) It's all good still love you guys !
What were they thinking with that 24-50 lens?! Surely for a kit lens you need to at least go to 70?! I’d absolutely love a 24-50mm if it had a constant f2 aperture - gets 24, 35 and 50mm all in one at f2. That would be a wedding photographer’s dream IMO. Imagine that on one body and a nice portrait lens on the second body! Why has no other camera company looked at something like that? Canon has shown it’s definitely do-able with their 28-70 f2.
They always said mirrorless lenses should be smaller but the only way they've made them smaller is by giving them smaller apertures. The 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 was the kit lens but now 24-50mm f4-6.3 is the new choice but with a reduction in focal length and aperture have they actually made any difference?!
Saying something doesn't have 4k because of a crop needs to stop. For what it is, for the price, it shoots 4k man. People that pay this price shouldn't have to look at gear as useless because of a or b. 4k is 4k.
But its really annoying when u have to recompose a shot when u switch to 4k.....or even switch a lens for the same purpose....nikon is clearly not pushing their video side which is quite shameful
Been shooting architecture and interiors professionally for about 8 years now, using a D7000 if you can believe it. I've learned to take that camera to it's limits and it produces the most wonderful velvety texture if that makes sense. I plan on upgrading and was considering the Z50 since I've had great success already with an APS-C camera. Now the Z5 is here, I hope they have a bundle with the adapter to make it more affordable up here in Canada. BTW... read a rumour that Nikon came out with the Z mount so that they could launch a medium format camera too? Great videos, I watch them all :)
Tony, can you quantify the danger or only having one card slot? The XQD card is build like a tank, and the Sony has the tough series that seem to be better than the $10 SD card. So do us a favor, and quit saying you know people who lost data, and give us data. Which cards fail more than others? How do they fail? Do they fall apart or data errors? Is XQD more reliable or the Tough Series or are they all suspect? Do they fail due to camera write errors or SD card failure? Do they fail more in the heat or cold? Thanks.
4.5 fps does not cut it for me. I am still waiting for my ideal Nikon mirrorless camera with 10+fps, 24+mp, dual cards, IBIS, better battery life in specs, and slightly better AF than the Z6. I hope the next generation of Z6 is announced soon. Meanwhile, I'll continue shooting with my D750.
4.5 fps on a 24 mp camera? Seriously, just get a Z6. Better all around camera. Cards don't fail as often as these paranoid pros say they do. And real pros have back-up bodies anyway so even they should still be good.
@@MrPhilbautista OK I'm not a pro in any way, but I would imagine that if you have a failure at a key moment (a wedding kiss/championship winning goal being scored for example) that second body is not much good, unless you are really pro and you could rewind time. :) Some things you can do again (portraits etc) but I just don't see why you would risk it for those moments you can't afford to miss. The stats he gave on card failure are higher than I would have thought. (I know SD, not SQD, but still...)
@@bingbong4848 Way overblown. More photos have been lost from stolen equipment than from faulty cards, yet life goes on. I'm not saying redundancy isn't important if you're a working pro, but if the choice is an inferior camera with 2 card slots (Z5) to a superior camera with 1 card slot (Z6), I'd take the superior camera any day of the week and twice on Sunday. And if I want a superior camera with 2 cards, then I'd go with a different system like the Sony A7iii. And, yes, there are adapters for F glass to E mount, in case lens selection is an issue for you.
@@MrPhilbautista I take your point :) yes life is risky, but i guess that we owe it to clients to minimize any risks that we have control over. I think that some buyers may be in a financial position where the z5 will represent best FF bang for buck and best choice (once the prices normalize and get closer to canon RP territory) This will do the job perfectly for slow paced event shootings, and i think will be a big hit for those who don't need better, as long as it does the job. There will always be a technically superior cam to whatever you're using, but if you can deliver the same results with the inferior camera, why not. Saying that, if money is no issue, i would be the first in line to buy the best of the best :)
@@bingbong4848 Then buy the D750, a better camera with 2 card slots from the same company, whose only drawback is lack of 4K. Save yourself a lot of money if you buy used. But, hey, if you're that dead set on the Z5, it's your money.
7:04 'it also has 26 mega pixels so that makes it a little bit sharper than the Z5' Since when has number of mega pixels equated to photo sharpness? Is this not a little missleading for someone who doesnt understand and is buying their first camera?
Out of curiosity are there any stats out there about how many XQD cards that have failed for photographers? Is it actually as important in the XQD/CF express world to have two card slots as in the SD world?
Anyone who shoots professionally needs two slots, no matter what. Even if the chance of a card failure is 1/1000 - the downside risk is too severe to risk it. If you lose an entire wedding/event/ insert job that can't be re-shot here, there's a real chance it'll end your business. In a world where dual cars bodies exist, going without a backup would be insanely negligent.
Landscope 360 shouldn’t a pro doing work such as events/weddings not be using two cameras, back and forth with a different lens on both bodies? If a ‘pro’ photographer is showing up to an event with one camera and the camera fails with no backup, I’d say that would be negligent. I’d be interested to know the failure rate of an xqd card vs a camera body itself. A competent photographer should be shooting back and forth with two bodies so that there is zero risk of losing an entire event regardless of wether they are dual or single card slots.
@@AlanHoey86 Sounds to me like you've got neither experience in professional shooting, nor thought this through. Some people use two bodies, some change lenses and keep the backup body in the bag until they need it. Whatever the case, if the shot of the ring exchange or first kiss, or bouquet toss was recorded on a failed card - good luck explaining that to a bride.
HubbleFunk that strategy only works if said pro photographer is an octopus and can take pictures of the kiss, cutting the cake, and the first dance with two cameras on long lenses at the same exact time. Any time you’re working an event, things move fast. Arguably, you might miss more moments switching.
@@CertainExposures Let's also keep in mind that the whole point of switching been two bodies is to have different lenses on them to get different shots in quick succession. It's not a technique suited to create redundancy, which is what two card slots are for.
For a great full frame budget camera the Nikon Z5 is hard to beat considering the many features you get including 5 axis stabilization. This is a great camera for the price. Image quality of z5 is great on Dpreview photo samples. If someone gets a 5 inch monitor than z5 is fine for vlogging and content creation. One point to also consider for 4K with Z5, is the work around for 4K and wide angle. Just use you DX lenses such as DX 10-20mm or Z 16-50mm or DX 16-85mm and you should get close equivalent to full wide of the DX area. The pixel read is about 1:1in DX. I read this online in forums, "correct me if I am wrong" but this makes sense to me, so that means 4K is usuable in DX crop mode with wide angle adapted DX lenses. (4K would be somewhat similar to using a "apsc camera" with full wide available in this area of sensor.) Z5 is still available at great prices. The 4K crop of Z5 is 1.7x, while DX crop from FF, is 1.5x so it is very close. Z5 camera is also recommended for use with Zhiyun Crane M3 Gimbal.
II bought this camera which was on sale for $999 to get into the full frame market. Have two Z lens primes f1.8 50mm and f1.8 85mm . Kit lens 24-50mm f4-6.3 VR and the 24-200mm f4-6.3 VR. Love the feel in the hands plus using one had to do all operations needed for pics. Two card slots and price for me. Found out that there is a toggle button on the left side of the viewfinder that can turn off the back LCD screen or the EVF or both on. All of the videos that I have watched about this camera did not show this. They did show on the other side of the EVF for people who wear eye glasses can make the EVF screen smaller.
Here in the U.K., just before the pandemic hit... Amazon were selling the Z6 at £1199 and £1499 on Black Friday (prices are the same in dollars) with F4 kit zoom, which is a great lens. So if you’re patient, you absolutely can find a Z6 for less than a Z5... And when the new Z6 replacement arrives, prices will fall off a cliff. So, it kinda feels like anyone with a brain is going to pass on the Z5 and take advantage of retailers trying to dump stock of the Z6.
Can i asked if you was using a different camera in this video as the autofocus when you switch to a close up shot mis-focused constantly are you using the contrast detection 4k mode in the EOS RP or another camera? as that doesn't look like DPAF
I've been noticing the lower image quality of your videos for quite a while now, and I've been noticing it on my 6" smartphone screen, where I usually watch your videos when I'm still attending university courses. I'm noticing lower resolution, detail. Now that I have more free time due to the summer break, I'm watching this video on the 27" 4KUHD IPS screen of my editing and gaming desktop computer, and the lower quality is even more noticeable: it looks like the focus is not always perfect, and there's also an "oversharpened" look, like you tried to recover contrast, detail and resolution in post. Are you still shooting in 1080p since you went back from UHD to FHD?
@@0741921 Was not a flex. It was just to give an approximate indicazion on resolution, dimensions, pixel density and color rendition of my screen, so that the issue of the "lack of sharpness, resolution and detail" of the video could have a context.
Once i got Z6 in my hands, i put my D750 as backup. It's better overall. As far as focusing, keepers rate is higher. Usability in different scenarios by using that fast "live view" mode or using long shutter speed is awesome. The only things i can say that i miss is the better grip on the D750 and low light autofocus assist beam (the green one on the body is not good enough). Bottom line, either way as still shooter you can make awesome stuff with both of them. If you have D750, i think is better to stay with it; Z5 is awesome, but you will get much more if you go one tier higher, and if you are coming from entry level dslr or mid range, Z5 is very good purchase.
Nikon introduced this camera as entry level basic full frame similar to a D610. The prices should go down soon to a more affordable $1100 range. The competition in this range will be the 2 canon entry level cameras EOSR and RP. Both of those don’t have 2 card slots or IBIS - period. It is not fair to compare this with the mid level cameras such as the A73. I think Nikon will be retiring the z6 and Z7 soon to replace with Z6s and z7s. I think those being second generation the competition will be level field for a true comparison with Sony.
We need a cheap compact medium format camera. Something like sony a7 IV with medium format sensor and a open lens mount system, like the E mount for medium format.
You wouldn't want to shoot with DX lenses if you were a hybrid stills/video shooter. If you are getting a camera for behind the camera video work with less than full screen sensor, you might as well get a GH5
@@weed46 , no, I would buy a Z50 for that purpose. But many people are not really interested in taking videos. The Z5 gives them a the option to do an occasional 4K video. And if they come from DX, then wide angel wouldn't be much of a problem. I understand the Z5 isn't the best camera for hybrid video/stills wedding photographers, but it's not true to categorically claim "there is no wide angel shooting with this".
A non bsi 24MP sensor, sounds like the D750 sensor? Even if its old that's am amazing sensor, the dynamic range and recoverability at base ISO is crazy good. My D750 has been my main body since 2014 and clients still gasp at the quality.
Christopher O'Grady I just picked up the Nikon Z5 this past Monday and have been comparing it to my Nikon Z6 that I’ve had for the past 18 months. With just simple testing all the way at the ISO range to 5000 I cannot tell a difference between the quality of the image. Actually the Z5 did a hair better at ISO 5000 then the Z6. I bought this Solely to use as my main body for weddings and as of right now it’s a homerun. Auto focus tracking is just as fast as the Z6 and I really like that you can use the camera while charging it. If you plan on buying this camera is solely for photography you will have no problems and will be completely satisfied. Depending on how much you use the video feature, it’s still nice camera for the price. I don’t do videos so it’s no problem for me. Even though the new z62 is coming out soon. The z5 is still a great camera. I have the z50, d800, z5, and z6. In my honest opinion you can’t go wrong with the z cameras
Regular SD Card failures? They may fail, but not on a regular basis with me. None of my 10 256MB cards used in my cameras have failed so far. I also use them regularly on low end HP servers for the OS. I had one that failed after 6 month and more than 10 that are still working 24/7 after 3 years.
I use a sony a7r3 for two years now, never use the second card. In the camera market, how many professionals and how many weekenders like me? Z5 is priced similar to sony a6600 and it’s a full frame.
Still the a6600 is a very bad camera and it will blow the z5 out of the water in the field. So they are 2 different cameras. Better comparation would be the eos rp and is much cheaper and can keep up with the z5 very close behind.
I wasn’t phased by the table on an angle but completely triggered by the focus on that side cam... thought they were using Canon now... was that set to a weird mode? Was it really having that much trouble locking on his eye? Overall the Z5 doesn’t seem to be much of a draw for anyone thinking to make a switch but rather to keep Nikon users at bay, just an average camera at a decent price, and Tony even points out the Z6 is pretty close in price.
I wouldn't use it for weddings. While seemingly as good and even better than the A7iii in some aspects, it will be too slow for some fast paced parts of it. You would probably want more than 5fps for send off or bouquet throwing.
When he's talking about having a camera that has two SD card slots, is he saying that the camera will save the photos you take to both SD cards? Like it's saving 2 copies of each shot in case one card fails? I thought that the 2nd card was there in case you fill up the first card, then the camera just starts using the second card to save your shots. Can someone clarify? Thank you!
If you guys could arrange a test for nikon's adapter and focusing with first and third party f mount lenses that would be great. The efficiency of using that adapter with existing glass is probably a big factor for a lot of people.
Tony when you publish these videos on YOU-Tube is it 4K? Because if it is not it is just fine? One good point you mentioned about mirror less cameras which I know because I use the Fujifilm XT3 is when you look through the viewfinder is like looking at a screen. This point here is why I prefer DSLR cameras. I held back on the Nikon D-850 because of not having either two SD cards or like the D-810 that I have not having compact flash. I hate when manufacturers change two much when they upgrade a body. But the D-850 is also a faster and well tried DSLR isn't it? Only the weight seems what differs but then all the new Z mounts have quite hefty lenses that equals the weight right?
Still how much difference can make the sharpness to be 600 just give the entry level photographers a lens cheap to enter in to the fast prime world. Is just a 50mm it used to be one of the first lenses for beginners. Not good for business.n
I had a chance to try the Z5, I love the handling of the camera and it seems very well made. However as a Sony a7iii user the autofocus isn't as good. Also you have better lens choices with Sony. I have the Samyang 45mm f1.8 as an example. Very very sharp and well priced, the Sony 85mm f1.8 is also great and not expensive. By the way I'm not a Sony fan boy , I used to shoot Nikon DSLR cameras, but fell in love with mirrorless after using Olympus cameras.
@@aussie8114 Oh man, you should rent a D850. It's such a nice update on the D810. I've been where you are now, but boy am I glad I upgraded. It's been three years and I'm still impressed with this or that feature on the D850 in a regular basis.
I don't think the Z5 is meant to replace the d850... for photography at least I think the d850 is far superior. This camera is an entry level mirrorless full frame. After some time when the price drops, the z5 might be a pretty good option. It ticks a lot of boxes. The non bsi sensor of the d750 shoots gorgeous photos, so should the z5. It has ibis, good weather sealing, dual uhs 2 card slots, good evf and pretty good battery life.
I think this camera might just be what I waited for, but I'd really love to see the real world reviews. I currently have a D810 and a D750 and even though I love the 810, buying the D750 has changed my game a lot. I bought it as a second body for weddings only to realize I use it more and more and weeks have passed without taking the 810 with me (I do use it on weddings ofc). :) I'd love to have the Z5, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to buy another D750 too before moving to Z5 and I'll keep my trusty D810 for landscapes and studio work. :)
@@Ashton351 750 captures details better in the shadow/dark areas with significantly less noise (might be my own experience though) which works well with my portraiture style. D810 on the other hand is better with highlights and light areas. I had photos seemingly blown out completely that I was able to save and deliver to my clients. A large sum of my work comes from outdoor portraits, maternity or family sessions, so D750 used mainly with primes or sometimes fixed aperture zooms works very well for me. 🙂
Hi Tony. I have used the Nikon z5 for a while now. I've noticed that in low light, it does not open the lens' aperture to let in more light to aid in focus speed and accuracy. Have you also experienced this, and do you think this is an easy thing that can be fixed in a firmware upgrade?
@@ThisIsDavesGarage Thanks for your reply. In a studio i fix the settings to kill light, so f5.6, 200iso, 1/160. It is standard practice. But at the time when it failed me the most, some ambient light was bleeding in, and i didn't mind that because it would help the flash work less, but the z5 was still hunting for focus. I just worked with my d750 at the boxing last night, a very dark environment. I tested it on those manual settings, and during focusing it kept the aperture wide open, before closing to programmed aperture before taking the shot. My Olympus e-M1 operates like my d750 also. Not sure why the z5 is not.
This camera is being marketed to wedding photographers and other professionals who generally shoot with the d750. This is good strategy as those people stay within the Nikon system and switch to mirrorless.
If I were a Nikon shooter, I'd probably wait until the Z6 and Z7 come with 2 card slots. It would be either that or nothing. In the meantime, I'm more than happy with my Pentax K-1's IQ and DR. It still compares well with anything else on the market. Sure, I would probably look at other camera systems if I were into sports and wildlife photography.
Tony please answer the questions please.!!. Which is a better camera to buy for portraits and family shoot- Sony a7iii or Nikon z5? Confused in between what to buy 🥺, please do recommend
I dont unterstand the advantage of having 2 sd-card slots ? Wheres the benefit if one card fails ? The pics are gone ..and what else could be done than to replace the faulty card with a new one ? Thats what I would do on a single card camera the same way. So why should that safe me important pictures ? Or will the pics be saved parallel to the second card ? Just like a mirrored drive ? Then it makes sense ;-)
So this camera is great for weddings and pets. I would like to see a comparison between this Z5 and the Sony A7c. With the Sony being more expensive and one card slot. Probably the A7c is not for weddings but maybe for pets.
I enjoy playing the long game with bodies. My goal for 2020 is to get my hands on the lumix s1. If I find myself needing a back up camera I think the z5 would be a wonderful option. My question is how deep is the buffer? Low frame rate is okay as long as you don’t out run the buffer.
Hi Tony. Nope, I'm waiting to see if the upcoming Z7S has any image quality advantages over the existing Z7. If not, I'm looking to trade in my nice Fuji X-T3 for the Z7 (only because I print very large.) Thanks, and be safe!
Thanks for the video, would you be able to advise between a7r ii and nikon z5/6? Which one is good for still photography. They are of same range. The latest upgrade is costly so looking from above mention two items.
Also compared the Z5 to the Lumix S5 but price and better focus breathing/Auto Focusing is why I chose the Z5. I wanted a camera that wasn't small in my hands.
Do you consider the DX0mark results when drawing conclusions about the Nikon Z5? For potrait photography78% For street photography excellente..97.0 For sports 76.o For dailly 94.0 excellent For landscape 51.0
As a former Nikon shooter who jumped to an A7iii 3 years ago, I'm looking back at Nikon with interest specially since Z9's release! Nikon will bring the new improvements to their future models which is a big deal! In 2-3 years Nikon will be back in the conversation with more lenses and bodies to choose from. Sony-Sony duopoly is ending soon!
5:01 is this the famous Canon's Dual pixel AF? backlight situation? As a wedding photographer, I was waiting for Z5, but this camera is not for me. It is much slower and the same weight as Z6, aslo the same price in Europe (-200euro discount ) if 24-50 is really sharp form corner to corner, not like 24-200, would be my compact travel lens
I'm happy with my D750... really wish the D780 was a true hybrid i.e. had somekind of clever EVF & OVF solution but... failing that Nikon really could do with releasing a F mount adapter that can also support screw drive (D) lenses - the nikon 135mm DC is my main headshot lens and it's one where the AF accuracy is a bit hit and miss so it could benefit from contrast detect focusing but it's not properly supported with the current adapter
I'm looking forward to a image quality test between z6 and z5 and also low light performance due to absence of BSI. I've another question: what's the future of XQD card? No new cameras are using it. Can CF Express card be used in z6/z7? What's the percentage of XQD card failure? They may be more reliable than SD cards, but not infallible.
16:16 in is the point for me. I loved my RPs but I basically wanted an RP with dual card slots (to provide safety for wedding shoots). I couldn't get it from Canon, but Nikon supplied it, so I preordered two. I wasn't about to spend 1500 more than my RP's to get dual slots and lose resolution so I've ordered a pair of these for now. I could stomach the 400 extra for now.
4.5 fps is the deal braker. Why would they put pro features like dual card slots, joystick and magnesium alloy body, just to cripple it by the slow continuous frame rate. I really do not get it, who is this camera for? Even wedding and event photographers would feel they may miss the golden shot with such a slow cfr. Nikon markets it as an "entry level", but the price suggests otherwise. It is neihter here, nor there...
It’s going to be slower than a constipated turtle. Like, I asked earlier why the kit lens for it is only f4-6.3, not the usual f3.5/5.6. They could have made at least an f4 lens for it. Another turd muffin camera.
@@ytr8989 Yeah, the kit lens is the other mystery. I got the idea of making it super compact, but c'mon 2x zoom and 4-6.3? I'd rather use my m4/3 with a couple of primes @ 1.8. I'll get better IQ and a shallower DOF that way.
Nearly 50% of people have had SD cards fail? WTF are you guys doing to your SD cards, or what cheap cards are you buying. I've never had an SD card fail after many years shooting weddings and normal portrait shoots. Have we just had amazing luck?
Me, too. I’ve never had a SD card fail in 15 years of shooting digital.
Me too
As a studio news cameraman for many years I recommend you stop down your cameras to avoid all the miss focus. It's distracting.. After all whats the point of desk props if there going to be out of focus? The standards used in television production are that way because they work the best.
Don't you know YT photographers are obsessed with bokeh? Obsessed! lol
10:45 The Z6 doesn't have a SD card slot. Instead it has a XQD-card slot. XQD is way faster than SD and has less failures.
Yes, I noticed Tony had the Z6 with 1xSD on his chart (by mistake). Good you noticed it as well.
Yes a real design failure by Nikon not putting 2 card slots in the Z6
@@keith4047 agree its why i didnt buy a Z6 the XQD cards are very expensive ie 3 to 4 times the cost which for none video work is not required
@Strawberry Kiys have you got a scientific research paper link to back this up?
@@zvxcvxcz Oh so you really believe that 20 y.o. 24-70 F2.8 speaks "same language" as 2020 24-50? cool...
Why do you say that a smartphone is anywhere near the quality of a camera? My 11pro comes nowhere near my A7riii in anyway.

Heck you can even get the Sony A7II for about $900
I understand its not fair to compare launch price with street price, but still. Z5+FTZ for 1650.....hmmmmmmmmmm. If I want to switch soon, then I don't think Z5 makes much sense.

My Z7 blows me away with its amazing quality every time I use it. I'm glad they have a cheaper Z system camera which is more affordable, and allows people to experience the new lenses. The d750 has a non-BSI sensor so I expect the Z5 will produce equally glorious IQ assuming the on - chip AF doesn't interfere too much. I'm looking forward to seeing a Z 70 200 F4
Yes, they need to release a Z 70-200 F4 asap.
There’s no such lens on their roadmap, but maybe the 100-400 will be an f4.

@@Smoothblue90 Agreed. It would be interesting what Z6s brings to the table on new features. Likely 2 card slots for one.

Here in England it costs £1719 with the kit lens and the A73 is £1699 on sale or £1549 body only, The RP is £1200 body only for reference
WIth the severe crop, and lack luster burst, and no 120fps I don't think it measures up with the huge UK price tag
I just don't think it holds up against the RP or A73 and ergonomics/ease of use etc are entirely subjective
Also the whole *it's a stills camera* thing doesn't mean it has to have a crap video mode, especially when it's no cheaper than the other cameras , if it was £1000 then I'd agree but there are plenty of budget / first time shooters who would want both functions, I also think the kit lens is pretty mediocre (I mean they are for all the FF cameras which is a shame)
Yes but if you saw what I said about UK pricing you can see it's no cheaper here than the current A73 and it's a lot more than the RP
So it's *value* is severely demolished when I can get an A73 for the same price
Comparing it to the price at launch is irrelevant you have to see where if fits into the market right now to a buyer
If it comes down to £1000 I'd 100% agree but I don't see it happening myself, that's a big drop and if they want to reclaim market share price at launch should have been their smoking gun

Can you make one of those in depth technical videos where you explain why BSI sensor is better and how it works?
TLDR; Standard sensors have wiring on top blocking some light. BSI sensors are flipped so wiring on bottom side no light blockage.
How's your math? 640x480 is less than a third of 1 million dots. 1280x720 would come closer, but still falls a little short of 1 million.
I have the d5600 and thinking about the same move. Do you used the ftz adapter? How is it with your Z50?
4:10 the reason why sd cards fail is because they can only read up to 120mbps and 4k needs 144mbps so when it is trying to write that from the camera to the card it will and can corupt cards

@@mirrorlessny Even the Z50 does a lot better!
Why he is using af on a locked off shot is anyone's guess.
I'm holding out at least til they announce the Z6s and Z7s specs and price.
Yeah 1 more month hopefully!
It's funny but I think that with these specs this is actually a camera that doesn't really need two cards. It seems like a solid affordable student camera or for a wanna be fashion or street photographer.
Even they don’t want to lose their saved images. Imagine that….
1st :Z6 has XQD card and not SD, XQD cards have far less failure then SD.
2cond : your side camera keeps on hunting, kinda annoying :)
It's all good still love you guys !
True. As a con, they are super expensive that adds up quite fast unfortunately.
Why people don’t use manual focus for basically standing in place is beyond me.
They already have a 24-70mm f4 and f2.8 for the system.
All to shoot the lantern fly on your mailbox
Should be compared to eos r not the rp .
Rp routinely $800 , kit 24-105 was $1000 Father’s Day. Eos R is routinely 1400-1700 and a better comparison.
Tony, tbh, how much photographers need sports and wildlife features? 1 out of 100??
Z 5 is an awesome camera and isnt geared toward videography more a stills with video capabilities
For reference, Canon's Clear View II in the 5D Mk II, 7D, and 1D Mark IV had 920,000 dots or precisely VGA resolution, almost 10 years ago.
Very useful tip about dx lenses for 4k
And they Talk about dual focus on Canon RP.
Chill with the “27 4kuhd ips” flex 😂 might as well add hdr10 curved 240hz 1 ms response time for extra flex, lol
@@0741921 Was not a flex. It was just to give an approximate indicazion on resolution, dimensions, pixel density and color rendition of my screen, so that the issue of the "lack of sharpness, resolution and detail" of the video could have a context.
Watched it on my 75" TV and it looked terrible.
I think he stopped recording in 4k
4:40 "... there is no wide angle [video] shooting with this."
I assume you could shoot 4K video with DX lenses and get wide angle with those lenses.
You wouldn't want to shoot with DX lenses if you were a hybrid stills/video shooter. If you are getting a camera for behind the camera video work with less than full screen sensor, you might as well get a GH5
True, but are you going to buy a full frame camera and then shoot with DX lenses?
@@weed46 , no, I would buy a Z50 for that purpose.
But many people are not really interested in taking videos. The Z5 gives them a the option to do an occasional 4K video. And if they come from DX, then wide angel wouldn't be much of a problem. I understand the Z5 isn't the best camera for hybrid video/stills wedding photographers, but it's not true to categorically claim "there is no wide angel shooting with this".
@@otraguardia Actually using DX lenses on the Z5 for (handheld) video could be amazing, as the Z DX lenses are also stabilized
I have a D750 and a D780. D780 if shopped right can be had for $1,400. BSI sensor and faster autofocus. Plus 4K video of the Z6.
I am quite shocked they didn't try to make a 24-85mm kit lens for this camera as they did for the DSLR version.
A camera review without the reviewer making the effort of taking some decent photos is worthless. I can look up all those spec myself
Honestly, weddings are not BIF. If you can't prosper with 5fps at a wedding then you are doing something wrong.
@@lcador9 I've shot weddings with some crappy cameras, but sometimes you just need more fps. Ever seen people pop a pinata?
When he's talking about having a camera that has two SD card slots, is he saying that the camera will save the photos you take to both SD cards? Like it's saving 2 copies of each shot in case one card fails? I thought that the 2nd card was there in case you fill up the first card, then the camera just starts using the second card to save your shots. Can someone clarify? Thank you!
If you guys could arrange a test for nikon's adapter and focusing with first and third party f mount lenses that would be great. The efficiency of using that adapter with existing glass is probably a big factor for a lot of people.
I'm so glad I jumped on my Nikon D5600 when it came out. Prices are out of reach now.
The 600$ nikon z 50mm 1.8 is among one of the most the sharpest lenses on the market today
Still how much difference can make the sharpness to be 600 just give the entry level photographers a lens cheap to enter in to the fast prime world. Is just a 50mm it used to be one of the first lenses for beginners. Not good for business.n
Preach sister.
@@Avinash-wg7xl I understand but the company doesn't get new users the future depends on current users and how often they upgrade gear.
That autofocus hunting was really annoying.
Maybe because autofocus is the most important thing?

Not giving up my d850
I would have said the same a month ago, but now the R5 exists...
I’m not giving up on my D810.
@@aussie8114 Oh man, you should rent a D850. It's such a nice update on the D810. I've been where you are now, but boy am I glad I upgraded. It's been three years and I'm still impressed with this or that feature on the D850 in a regular basis.
Same here... sticking with it and all my Glass.
Why do you find yourself using the D750 more? The lighter weight?
@@Ashton351 750 captures details better in the shadow/dark areas with significantly less noise (might be my own experience though) which works well with my portraiture style. D810 on the other hand is better with highlights and light areas. I had photos seemingly blown out completely that I was able to save and deliver to my clients. A large sum of my work comes from outdoor portraits, maternity or family sessions, so D750 used mainly with primes or sometimes fixed aperture zooms works very well for me. 🙂
The camera shooting the second closer angle was really struggling with focusing.
Hi Tony. I have used the Nikon z5 for a while now. I've noticed that in low light, it does not open the lens' aperture to let in more light to aid in focus speed and accuracy. Have you also experienced this, and do you think this is an easy thing that can be fixed in a firmware upgrade?
That's dependent on what mode you're in. Sounds like you're in m for manual, go to a for aperture priority.
Hey Tony may I wait for Sony a7IV? I can patiently wait another 6-8 month :)
And a few thousand dollars price difference.
Why are so many RUclips Reviewers comparing this with the Nikon D750 instead of the D780?? The 750 is a workhorse but it has been updated!
Marketing talking points
Because it’s probably not a significant enough update to warrant spending more money it.
Yes. I'm really looking forward to what the autofocus on the Z6s performs like. It's going to have two card slots and a battery grip with buttons.
Tony please answer the questions please.!!.
Which is a better camera to buy for portraits and family shoot-
Sony a7iii or Nikon z5?
Low frame rate is okay as long as you don’t out run the buffer.
again with the bad math .... cmon tony ... 1280*960 = 1,2M-dot ... 3,6 is more like 2560*1440
Yeah, but it's dots not pixels. But funny he doesn't mention it when he compares the Z5 to the A7III which only has a 2.3M dot EVF
Dots aren't pixels. 3.6m dot is 1.2m pixel.
At 3:49, you might want to check your camera settings, it lost focus multiple times there.
Hi Tony. Nope, I'm waiting to see if the upcoming Z7S has any image quality advantages over the existing Z7. If not, I'm looking to trade in my nice Fuji X-T3 for the Z7 (only because I print very large.) Thanks, and be safe!
Did you just spill your milk or something?
Thanks for the video, would you be able to advise between a7r ii and nikon z5/6? Which one is good for still photography. They are of same range. The latest upgrade is costly so looking from above mention two items.
Also compared the Z5 to the Lumix S5 but price and better focus breathing/Auto Focusing is why I chose the Z5. I wanted a camera that wasn't small in my hands.
Do you consider the DX0mark results when drawing conclusions about the Nikon Z5?
For potrait photography78%
For street photography excellente..97.0
For sports 76.o
For dailly 94.0 excellent
For landscape 51.0
Hey Tony, is that a lock button on the mode dial or is it an extra function button? Thank you.
It is much slower and the same weight as Z6, aslo the same price in Europe (-200euro discount )
if 24-50 is really sharp form corner to corner, not like 24-200, would be my compact travel lens
log0log I think it’s best to try it for yourself than relying on you tubers who have different agendas.
Why so quiet... because Z6s and Z7s

Thanks for this video..I'm thinking of upgrading from my beloved D750 and was looking at this and the Z6...any preference?
good video, thanks
what's with the cam2 hunting and going out of focus? you changed from the Canon RP?
Roccitalks has actual hands on with the camera and stills to show !
And Rocci Talks does a great review job with still, low light, London street, and some wildlife.
What equipment did you use to film your video at your left-hand side? It was constantly out of focus. It was annoying.
Yeah it's the lens (the Canon RF 24-240). It's slow.
Tony are you using a Nikon Z5 for your b cam? It seems to keep wandering focus.
I'm looking forward to a image quality test between z6 and z5 and also low light performance due to absence of BSI.
I've another question: what's the future of XQD card? No new cameras are using it. Can CF Express card be used in z6/z7? What's the percentage of XQD card failure? They may be more reliable than SD cards, but not infallible.
snehasis pal it’s still going to be better than Canon’s sensors or the same as as Canon’s best sensor.

Yeah, the kit lens is the other mystery. I got the idea of making it super compact, but c'mon 2x zoom and 4-6.3? I'd rather use my m4/3 with a couple of primes @ 1.8. I'll get better IQ and a shallower DOF that way.
