45 Y/O S&W Police Slugs - Anti-materiel Sabot Rounds - Tested
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 май 2021
- We have a rare opportunity to test out some unique 12ga. slugs that S&W tried to convince LE agencies would be a good idea to adopt. They claimed they would penetrate automotive engine blocks, which would disable the vehicle. In order to do this, the slug would have to first pass through other obstacles along the way and with luck, it might hit something vital on the engine. Whether or not these slugs were EVER successfully deployed in this manner, we may never know.

15:45 Props to Danny for wearing a Kentucky Ballistics shirt for Scott. I’m sure Jeff was wearing one, too.
Tie it to a string so you don't have to put a thumb in it...
Yea, after that cynical wink to Scott in the intro with that vest around the chamber... :)
@@lukearts2954 I don't think it was cynical. Scott's accident just highlighted the potential dangers of old ammo, so safety first.
@@lukearts2954 This isn't the first time TFM has done that for safety with unknown rounds.

Nice tribute to Scott. His new motto is just put your thumb in it! Maybe you or a viewer can make a thumb round and see how it flies. 😁
👍
You know, people are weird enough to send Scott a real thumb 😬
@@afberglund2764 I'd laugh my ass off if someone sent me a thumb, then call the police and make sure it was a legally acquired one.
Balearic slingers used lead projectiles made by stinging their thumb in wet sand and filling the hole it created with molten lead. Killing people with a lead thumb has a long and rich history.
That sounds so goddamn cursed
That second helmet; even at less than 1000fps that hit was brutal. If you survive it you are likely going to be eating blender meals and drooling on yourself.
@@Deere2154D republican too
This was discussed at length after previous helmet tests. No penetration is to be preferred, but it is common for some to think that such an impact is somehow ‘survivable’. It is not. Heads behave as a liquid at such impacts, and brains become homogeneous. Think raspberry jelly.

Meanwhile the previous video
I know I'm late to the party, but I'd love to see you reload these with new powder and see what kind of velocities you can drive them up to and if they will perform as advertised.
Same here. 1600 plus
It’s good to see that these slugs were lucky enough to still be in reasonable condition, and more importantly were safe to shoot, despite their age
Ammo can last a century or more if kept dry and cool. I’ve shot ammo from the 1950’s with no problems. Obviously, I inspected it first.
Most old factory fresh ammo is fine if stored properly and not tampered with. Ive got some 1940s 762x39 ive been shooting for years, and its runs perfect. Ive got some 762x54r thats almost 100 years old, and it also runs like new
Heat kills powder life. Never know what you're getting. Depending on the powder, if temperature is kept under 85 or so it will outlive you by a long time. If under 75 it gets really dumb in lifetime.
Unlike them slap rounds
@@theshapeexists You do *not* have any 1940s production 7.62x39.
Let alone enough to have lasted for “years” of shooting.

@@OGPurePhoenix I'd like to see reloads of these with new powder too. (edit, may be a faster burning powder, as the sabot it lighter and may require faster powder to reach velocity before leaving the bore.)
@@deucedeuce1572 I was going to say the same, but without knowing the exact constitution and construction of the projectile, it's incredibly difficult to replicate more slugs in a way that's period accurate to the 1970s

@@sunshadow7XK Also yes.
They said at the start the company has a patent for the design, so no point for ballistic machinist to spend time making them as can’t sell them
@@carsonhunt4642 If TFM can at least post dimensions I can make one for my own purposes.
Danny never fails to impress with his shooting skills.
He is bench shooting. Single shot at a time at that. After initial shot where to hold for a shot is much easier. With these slugs the initial shot is needed to get a ball park of how it wants to fly. Generally they put up a target 10 or so yards away. Notice this one shot high. So hold low slightly for probably up to 30 yards.
Will always be missed but never forgotten Danny we love you
I have about 10 boxes of these Police S&W sabot slugs. They were purchased in the 1970's. I saved them all these years for armageddon. When I saw this video it reminded me. It was just a few weeks ago, I found the container where I stored these and pulled them out to look at them.
Damn, that KY Ballistics incident really got everyone walking on eggshells, huh

With untested ancient shells yeah definitely.
@@messagedeleted1922 he could have unloaded and reloaded them.

It's been a long time but I've seen TFM wrap the shotguns in kevlar before on old rounds.
We've done that a couple times. I think some of the Heavy Hitter test loads and the Brenneke slugs.

As a young man I saw the movie Alien Nation and from it found out about BRI sabot rounds.
I though using that drum mag on the shotgun was cool. Good movie
I was thinking the same but couldn't remember the name of the movie. Was it James Caan hiding behind a car with the slugs going all the way through?

Hello to Jeff and Danny - Hope you saved one of those slugs and that box for historical purposes - but if not, the video will suffice for that. There was a lot of S & W ammo back then, but apparently, they didn't find it profitable enough to continue... nice video as always. Get well soon, Scott..!! Steve
In hindsight it would of been interesting to reload one with new powder to see the difference.
Beat me to it, I was going to make the same comment. I suppose they could at least chrono one of the newer Winchester BRI slugs to see the speed difference.
@@michiganengineer8621 That’s a good idea.
Would *have* been.
HEY DANNY! Good to see ya
Had the pleasure of trying a couple of boxes of these around 1981. Was shooting targets accurately after passing through a concrete block wall. Targets were ~10 feet behind the wall and the wall was ~15 yards away.
Probably were a bit fresher then!

I kind of expected Danny to yell: It's comin' right for us before shooting that engine.
At distance it does lose velocity but can still penetrate more in soft tissue than up close. Buffalo's latest video was awesome. Learned something very valuable.
Very cool "slow" vintage slug.
Lovely design - I loved the wasp like shape.
The sabot was also nicely made with a very good support.
Really awesome shooting with the Kevlar on top and all Danny - and superb slow motion captures from Jeff to spice things up. :)
thank you Saar!
Most modern powders (US produced, post-cold war) are designed to degrade safely, meaning the round will lose pressure over time. Some ammo, like old WW2 corrosive stuff, can degrade and increase pressure, so they become unsafe if not kept properly and will blow up your gun.
Been watching periodically for years, glad you're still going man!
That claim has been widely debated.
I've never seen anybody come up with conclusive documentation one way or another about whether this is true.
In general most powders seem to be pretty stable as long as you keep him in a controlled temperature environment.
@@Krobear I did read it. I was disputing the part about designed to degrade. People have been saying that about powders and primers forever kind of like 556 is designed to wound. Whether powders do degrade is a different issue but I've never seen any documentation that can support the claim that they are designed to do so. I would be interested in seeing that sort of documentation, if it does exist. I just don't think it works to state it as a fact without some sort of evidence somewhere. And I would be happy for somebody to find that evidence.
I've got a crate of barely post WW2 (1947) soviet surplus. The stuff shoots better than any modern ammo I've put in it!!!
@@confederate2506 I might have the timeframe/areas slightly wrong but an example of this is Turkish 8mm mauser that was produced with German support, also czech copies of 7.9mm Kurz, however the powder is composed, it became over-pressure with time, aka they didn't degrade safely. If you're worried about it you can always google and find out if people have had experiences with rounds getting hotter. A lot of surplus stuff has sat in boxes for decades, maybe moved occasionally, exposed to heat, and around the time they were using a bunch of new expedient chemicals to produce gunpowder. Forgotten Weapons did a vid about this.
@@GunFunZS These are verified facts, about certain ammo types. Turkish produced 8mm mauser made 70-80 yrs ago has blown up many machine guns in the past decade because it didn't degrade safely. Degrade on a chemical level, you want powder that's designed to become low-pressure over time. All smokeless nitro powder made in the past decades are all chemically composed to decompose in a safe manner. This isn't some "gun myth" telling you not to store your 5.56.
I think that's pretty cool how it at least seems like all the shooter channels while in competition for viewers still support (don't hate on) the other guys.
Very cool. And, while you don't fill the shirt out quite like Scott does, that Kentucky ballistics shirt looks good on you.
Great review and history. I wish you could do more videos. Yours are so professional, interesting and unique. Keep up the good work.

PS Good job fellas. Always a pleasure.
Great video !! Really interesting to see how those old slugs work.
Need to load some with fresh powder , 12-1300 FPS
like that idea with blanket over the breach when shooting unknown/old ammo ;)
We have done that before with the Heavy Hitters I think. I wasn't too confident in the guy's test loads.
When I seen the vest over the dsnger bits I knew it was because of Scots incident. Love this channel.
Get better Scott. We love you.. And are praying brother
For comparison a few of those new Winchesters or some 3" shells with new powder at safe max pressure for 1oz slugs to get 1700ft/sec would've been interesting.
I don't care who ya are... If you get hit in the helmet with a 12ga slug, you's a gotta be having a bad day! 😂
For the first time ever i had a mid video advert, well done for not getting this demonetised
Given the magnitude of deformation visible on those ballistic helmets, I have no doubt whatsoever that the wearers would have suffered multiple catastrophic skull fractures and crushing entry wounds resulting in immediate loss of life!
Even at much degraded velocity these rounds impart a huge amount of energy into the target, door locks and hinges would fail under fire from fresh rounds fired from close range.
Thank you for this interesting, informative and entertaining video, I imagine that the antique engine nerds were gnashing their remaining teeth and pulling out the last wisps of their long gone hair at the sight of that old engine meeting the 12 gauge projectile...
I just went on an hour Taofledermaus binge...now this? NICE!!!

Yeah it’s dangerous shooting old rounds look at KY Ballistics video where his 50 BMG BLEW UP. He was shooting old slap rounds and the 3rd one blew the gun up big time GOD BLESS y’all Amen 🙏
From what I've been hearing that may have been a "counterfeit" round that was reloaded and hot. One of the other channels mentioned an issue with polymer sabots and muzzle-brakes as well.
@@Krobear Very true. I think we will all have to wait until Mark Serbu gets finished with his diagnostics. From what he (Serbu) said on his own channel it _sounds_ like Scott had a few more rounds from that batch. Hopefully those were sent to Serbu along with the carcass of the RN-50
I like how you went into details of the round, dissected the load and showed the safety you took. Remember the difference between science and messing around is documentation.
The impact on the mild steel looked amazing.
He doesn’t need to aim, he’s got a sixth sense..or maybe ecolocation.. 🤣😂
His buddy better have a can opener to remove that guys helmet. The last thing that guy saw was the back of his skull fly out from the front of his face.
Zero body armor can stop these. I'm in the process of 3d printing some of these to be cast in lead and loaded. Will be good for my shtf anti personnel arsenal.

Kentucky Ballistics watching this video at 4:50 mark: "Ahh, yeah, that's a good idea right there."
Wrapping his 50 cal would not have stopped the cap. Threads can only be torqued so many times. Thats why it failed so hard. It if it was a bolt instead. The bolt would have blown out the side or barrel burst open. Price wise that gun was an inferior design and option for price range. Literally 200 dollars more gets you a bolt gun in ar type set up from SHTF 50 or even Serbu Bolt action 50, although pre pandemic prices. Things went up a little from then.

@@jeremyclayton3944 scott had a bunch of things align i a bad way. The least is shooting a slap through a muzzle brake which is a no go
@@Krobear learn a bit about the slap. Military manuals say it should not be used with a muzzle brake. It was designed for the m2 which doesn't have a brake. It doesn't take much to cause an overpressure situation. So how about you get educated. Check out Tiborasaurus Rex who eloquently explains it. Or be an bottom 2% uneducated and ignorant fool which it seems you are.
@@Krobear you aren't supposed to shoot SLAP rounds through a muzzle brake, the sabots like to peel off in the brake and cause a baffle strike.
But that's not what happened to KB. If he'd had a baffle strike, the damage would have been out at the muzzle end. Instead, he had the threads shear off of the breech cap, a thing that would take at least 85kpsi. That's over 150% of the max pressure for BMG ammo. Proof rounds are 65-68k, depending on which testing spec you use.
