ROLLER BEARING Sabot Shotgun Slugs - British Brilliance!

- Today we test out some projectiles sent from England, a first! Leigh did a great job keeping this design in spec using very unorthodox materials. We discuss how much attention is paid towards precision and the many other factors that make a huge difference between making a precision projectile and just stuffing stupid things in a shell. Like we mentioned, we are very backlogged on getting to all the viewer-submitted stuff and it might take MONTHS before we test them.

I’m glad you like them 👍
It’s pronounced Lee like Tree😂
I’m glad no one was hurt by ricochet😬
I’m working on a new design hopefully be completed soon🫡…
I was starting to think you were mad at us too for taking so long to test these! You did an awesome job, thank you so much for sending them!
@@taofledermaus Brilliantly executed!
@@taofledermaus No it’s all good, I’m quite patient with most things 😂
Great job Leigh. Quite the creation. Awesome to see them put through their paces. Looking forward to round two!
Totally awesome. Thanks for sending those. Very interesting in the slow mo.
Proof that OG is a terrible marksman, he accidentally shot his phone on purpose! Thank you guys for all your hard work and the awesome videos you produce. And thanks to everyone who sends in test rounds!
Good shooting Text! I wonder where his real aim point was?
He needs a three colored laser pointer. Set one for the scope at 13 yards, 25, and 50? Different colors for three points of aim. Just turn it on for the camera, because we already know he's spot on.
@@TheMechanator he said
mid way up the body. And "it pulled left a bit". It hit the left side of midway up the phone. So... he aimed at the apple.
@@eon2330 good catch.
The slowmo footage from the ballistic gel block really shows how well balanced those projectiles are. It sailed through the gel block, slammed into the steel plate, then sailed backwards in the same orientation as fired while STILL ROTATING. That's nuts. Leigh (Lee? Lay?) should be proud.
I would have thought the gel would have killed the spin on those.
@@taofledermaus I'm guessing it's a combination of balance (they are bearings after all) and it impacting the block head-on. Hell, it could even be how well machined/polished they are. Smoother surface/less resistance. Still wild to see.
@@taofledermaus My guess is the air botne shockwave isolating the gel from the slug.
Lee high
Note that bullet ricochet opposite direction. It can be dangerous for shooter. For safety steel target shot be placed under some other angle (not perpendicular shooting direction).
Your captain Obvious :)
The last shot of it exiting the gel block, bouncing off the plate, and heading back towards OG still spinning was an amazing display of skill and luck.
We had to review the HS just to find where that one ended up. I think it hit him in the shoe
@@taofledermaus I know you are, but as a reminder be careful. I went to school with a guy that was shooting a 22 at ice. One ricochet back and hit him in the leg. Broke his tibula or fibula. He didn't realize until he saw the blood in the snow. His leg was in a halo for several weeks.
I was just about to comment the same thing! Even after a complete reverse, it was still spinning! Awesome camera work Jeff!
@@RustyorBroken very good point!!! I myself was shooting a .22 LR pistol one trip to the range. I was shooting at a target sitting on a plastic 55 gallon barrel, one of my shots was a couple of inches below the target…. It went into the barrel and then “surfed” the inside rounded surface of the barrel, and then it came BACK out of the barrel and whipped right past my head!!! It was literally just a slim bit of inches to the left of my ear when it went past 😬😮 have made a pact to NEVER EVER shoot at barrels or anything ON a barrel since then!!
@@taofledermaus it did watch 11:38 at .25 you can see the round tumble into OG's foot!
Jeff you're the Emeril Lagasse of shotguns. You put all these ingredients together and Bam!
lol thank you Nick! Notice the sweet roll crimp I put on those?
@@taofledermaus yes sir!
Because after all you are the Emeril Lagasse of shotgun blasting.
@@taofledermaus - I see what you did there
@@dizzy_derps Is that... a Food Wishes reference?!
I prefer the slo-mo right after the shot taken, but the compilation at the end is cool too. The clay block was by far my favorite!
Never gets old.
That clay shot in slow motion was awesome! Also the gummy ballistic bear accuracy. Very good video!
thanks Juan
The clay and the bag of water were just beautiful (I especially liked the "shot cup" bouncing off the table and splashing through the curtain of water). I'm subbed to a channel dedicated to special effects mostly done in simulation software. I'm going to challenge them to try to match those explosions.
Jeff, Gregg, I appreciate you and I appreciate the community that you have built. I sprained my ankle so I'm laid up and watching all that I missed!
Thanks!
Dang! I hope you heal up fast! thanks
@@taofledermaus Thanks Jeff.
Really have to commend you guys on the amount of time you put into these videos. There is a lot of science and calculations that goes into the work you do. Non reloading folks may not realize that. Thank you.
Thank you!!
I am glad to know the process that you employ to make these projectiles useable. I watch every video you make. Thanks for the great entertainment!!!
thanks!
Amazing British home crafting at its best ^^ well done Lee.
Wow, a Brit who knows his $#it, really nice job on a home made. I don't guess sending dry ice slugs will be a good idea, probably be an empty box by the time you get to it LOL 😉 🤣. Don't know if you keep OG around for his shooting excellence or comedy, but he is a great part of each episode, you both are awesome, see y'all again soon.
thanks
I love hearing Jeff laugh in these videos. You can tell that he and OG really enjoy working together on them.
Edit: Sorry OG, I had a senior moment and complimented Jeff twice.
Jeff and Jeff?
My name jeff
Thank you again for all you guys do. I can say this when I feel like giving up in life I watch Danny’s last video.. hope you all are doing well and keep up the good work! I’ve learned a ton from you.
thank you! Stay strong!
I too have learned a lot from these videos. Jeff really knows his stuff and whether he knows it or not, he's a really good GunFu sensei.
insane performance. I have a sneaking suspicion that OG didnt miss the squirrel... the peformance on these rounds and shots by OG, BOTH very impressive. WOW!!
It wasn’t a miss. 😂
@@OGsDangerShow great shot OG 🙏 always appreciate the humor as well!
Thank you, Leigh.
These worked really well.
As long as we have primers, the 12ga will always be effective.
Great video guys 👍😎
OG wasn’t responding to my texts…
I was starting to think he was ignoring me.☹️
That is probably in the top ten. It's stable, accurate, and it doesn't over penetrate... Horizontal Rocket - That would be a good band name ; ) It was nice to see Danny's son on the show last week. Danny was one of the best guys that has ever been on RUclips. You folks should write a book about the RUclips experience. I'll buy it.
Thank you!
It was all great, however the slow mo at the end wrapped it up perfectly! Thank you! You guys are the most fun horizontal rocket launchers in the solar system!
Thank you!!
Utterly AMAZING how much the gummy bear's head changes shape upon impact.... then returns right back to normal!! Ballistic gel is really incredible stuff. Fantastic slow mo, Jeff, thank you! Pretty so-so shooting from Officer Greg, as well.
thanks Mort
As a British gun nut, I'm definitely impressed with the engineering of these rounds.
Please tell me that OG didn't actually shoot his real phone, otherwise that was VERY unlucky.
Also we British folk pronounce leigh as lee.
👍 Greg and Jeff. You proved that the SCIENCE of SLOW MOTION is a beautiful ARTFORM. God bless you and the entire Taofledermaus family 🇺🇸
thank you very much AC
Alright. Another episode of you make it we Mach it. Thanks guys. You make these rough days a lot smoother.🤙🏾
thank yoU!!
Wonderfully executed as always.
Thanks fellas!
thanks Mark
I am HIGHLY impressed with this slug, and as always, with Gregg's exquisite expertise with the 12 GA shotgun! Slow mo at the end was epic Jeff. Great video guys!
thanks Jeff
Great projectile and great shooting. The clay block is extremely impressive, thank you for including it today.
thanks!!
I just want to thank y'all for the content. In the last couple years, I've been hit with a double wallop of health issues, stomach cancer and then a heart attack. Your videos made me smile in the hospital when I hated the world. I can honestly say, you helped my moral greatly, and contributed to me healing and getting back to work. Keep up the awesome content. You are one of a very short list of gun channels that aren't cringworthy. There are way too many channels featuring a douchebag in a plate carrier pretending to be an "operator." Thanks again, and keep up the amazing content.
The stability during the end slow-mo sequence was insane! This feels like a creation of accidental genius.🙂
Nice shells, targets and commentary. When I seen the shot behind Lincoln's head, that's what I was thinking too. Holy cow! That shell with the doll on top looks like it reentered the block and skipped out from under
I never get tired of these vids. Never change, Jeff and Gregg!
thanks DG
Very very cool slug. Really elegant!
Super cool shooting and slow motion shots! Wow... My most favorite Sat. Video!
Haven't seen an OG finger wiggle in a while.
Thanks for putting a smile on my face. 😅👍🏻
Nice work Leigh, welcome to the brotherhood of bullets 😈
He’s got a long ways to go to match the Rhinestone Hurricane!

Nice custom Sabo Jeff! Great shooting O.G. Great video as usual guys 👍🏻🇺🇲 Inflation shrunk the penny's!!!! 😅🤣
thanks
Bravo for the Lincoln’s head joke! 🤣🤣🤣
"Horizontal rocketry" I see what you did there OG, since you chuckled a bit. 🤭
BTW the clay block slowmo, I was like WTF the slug just stopped right there and of course the ballistic gel block was so ridiculous when the slug spun and ricoched back like it was rewinding itself.
I appreciate your work here.
Thanks to both of you! 👍
Our pleasure!
You two Gents were constructed of Pure Awesome! Thanks for the laughs my friends 😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
Officer Greg was in fine form. Not just marksmanship, but commentary. "not the first impact at the back of Lincoln's head.... Too soon?"
Just the the kind of rude adolescent humor we come to Taofldeermaus to wallow in. Keep it up.
Always love to see your video on my feed, gentlemen .Thank you guys! Much love brothers.
Interesting slug from Liver-puddle, guys. Thoroughly enjoyed the slo-mo montage at the tail end of the video, and the rarely seen these days OG finger wiggle somewhere in the middle of the presentation. All good, all the time!
thank you Noah
The slow mo is worth the wait! Another outstanding presentation!
thanks!!
LOL, only you with the Lincoln joke, I cringed then laughed. Great one.!
OG: “I don’t think it made it thru” as it literally bounces off his foot. Love it! Oh, and glad it was so gentle that he didn’t know it.
Keep up the good work, gents.
Fantastic as always. Thanks guys.
thank you Chris!! Nice seeing you again.
@@taofledermaus Never miss an episode.
Whoah - didn´t expect those results. That they were so precise for a homemade round in particular.
Great video as always (I know, I know, I write this every week....)
lol thanks
Idea: use a large baking pan to make a super large lead ingot. Steel stand to support it. Then use a rifled semi to blast off 7-8 in rapid succession.
Neat little rounds, I would have thought that even with the light weight, the whole hardened steel thing would have taken over.
So...instead of filling with epoxy, fill with Tungsten Carbide pellet. On impact, the back wall of the bearing will "newtons cradle" the carbide into the target. Or go even crazier to have a hollow carbide, that allows the nesting of a .22 blank, impact triggers rimfire, rimfire powers carbide penetrator forward.
Thanks guys (and girl I've seen from time to time) Your videos have been massively entertaining and educational. Seriously... you guys rock.
Offica Gregg's finest moment, glad to be a part of this.
The face on the clay block was priceless. Like it knew what was coming.
This should be called the indestructible slug. If you can find it after being shot then you could use it again. Nice going Leigh!
Holy crap those rounds slap. Good job, Leigh, you bloody legend.
but is it "Lee or Lay"?
Leigh pronounced Lee but spelt like the town about 15 miles from Liverpool along the A580.
@@taofledermaus I know two dudes that have the same spelling and both say Lee. 👌🏾🤙🏾
@@taofledermaus I have a Scandinavian freind that calls me Lay😂
That's seriously some of the best rotation of a slug that I've ever seen demonstrated on this channel. Nice job, Leigh!
Good stuff, boys. That clay block explosion was pretty cool!
I can imagine a rifled bore might spin the outside of the projectile while keeping the center (if weighted and hollow) would be a damn laser beam.
I just got to the penny portion of the video and O.G. you crack me up, brother. Thanks for the actual laughter. I appreciate you guys. 😆🤙🏾
I have a mental image of that round, for a good weight I think it would darn near have to be machined from tungsten, brass at the very least LOL. Leading end machined with a conical opening and a hole (1/8th or even 1/4th of an inch dia.) drilled through to the trailing end. Maybe use a penny diameter "pusher plate" between the slug and the wadding covering the hole through the core. Although now that I think of it, I think they have shot some cylindrical projectiles in the past.
@@michiganengineer8621 exactly. I know they've shot something similar but you're definitely right about the weight. Hell, with the way some plastics are it could be a breakaway tab type when the shear force get reached as it's firing, it'll let the bearings spin while possibly stabilizing the center. Either way the more weight in the center, the better.
I love this community. It's guys like you that help people think outside of the box. 🤙🏾
@@TheGeekiestGuy I believe you want most of the weight towards the outer surface for spin stabilization. That's why gyroscope toys have a heavy metal ring with just spokes connecting to the spin axis. If I had the tools to machine this thing, I think I'd connect the wad to the "pusher plate" so that (hopefully) it would lag behind the slug after exiting the muzzle.
Dammit! I need a 3-D printer and a metal lathe LMFAO! I have the design for the slug, wad AND sabot all put together in my mind and no way to build the damn thing!
Thanks for watching, G-Guy.
@@michiganengineer8621 as soon as I get a printer, I'm printing another printer.
We'll see how far we can get. I'm in Hawaii so it'll be one of those random collaborations. But I'm with you on this one.
I can't find a Bridgeport or a lathe to save my life out here.
OG’s bullshittery is some of the funniest stuff on RUclips.
It seems the more funny the joke...like the Lincoln joke...the faster I am compelled to hit the like button.
lol thanks
The slow-mo of the vest impact was absolutely brutal....
Jeff and OG, you two are amazing! The video, shooting and targets are outstanding. I really enjoy your videos. "Feeling Cocky?" Just giving the ATTA BOY'S out to the both of you! Thank You! Always interesting and informative! And those projectiles from Leigh, mind numbing. Who the heck would think of using those? I'm glad he did though.
thanks for the kind words GT
Thanks @G T Naylor, these guys Allways get me and my buddies rolling 🤣
This video could be in the top ten. The clay impact was impressive. The overall accuracy is so cool.
thanks Russell
I loved the slow-mo at the end format. Keep doing this.
Awesome projectiles! Great video! And, nice to see the patented OG finger wiggle again.
you guys should make another lead plate hit compilation like you did 3 years ago. it was pretty cool seeing all the rounds you guys had hit it with
Great video. I hope Leigh makes a heavy version that you can load into a 3" or even 3.5" hull with a big powder charge. Such a slug might even go through that lead plate.
Dream big or go home🤭🤣
I’ll see what I can rustle up👍
Excellent footage. Thanks gents. Really quite good performance. Appreciate all the time, energy & resources put into vids.
thanks!! !!
7:06 I havent laughed that hard since Liberia '96!
Truly tasteless, and THAT's why we love you, OG!
BTW, Nice Black Watch Pendelton Board Shirt.
Black Watch represent! 🤟😎
"Horizontal Rocket" was my nickname in high school....can't believe OG let that one go by. :-)
Chronos being the usual superstar it is, showing us all sorts of details - including that damn Beiberdoll,
indestructible as it's proven to be.
Over a decade later, TFM is still the best show of its' type on YT - and improving, seems like.
Long may Jeff and Gregg remain motivated to continue producing it!

Lincoln didn’t put a thumb in it 👍😂
I really love it how you give the science the data and the background the dimensions all important stuff but also just very interesting thank you once again
A lot of people just don't understand guns at all, much less how difficult it is to make a slug like that that will function with or without spin. I guess I need to explain things more.
We appreciate your hard work guys. That joke about Lincoln was hilarious.
Thanks! You'd think we used a script but Gregg comes up with some good ones
Epic Lincoln joke lol shame about our gun law's or you could come and visit us in the UK 😁👍🇬🇧
I'd still love to visit though
@@taofledermaus you would get a great welcome, and I bet you and Greg have some really funny stories to tell let's hope it happens 😁🇬🇧👌
This is possible in the UK, unfortunately would require private land ,with the person with the sporting rights having section 1 shotguns..
That is one nasty round. The way it dumped all it's energy into that clay block and pretty much vaporized it and did not over pen it was just wow. Would not want to be hit by that.
That was cool watching that round waggle backwards after the block pass through 😁
I figured the inner BBs would be enough off Centerline to make them less accurate. He must have stacked them carefully like the 9 pellets in 00 Buck.
Yeah that could have thrown the balance off if they weren't stacked orderly
@lunkydog with my obsessive disorder 😂 I’m never happy with a job until I’m happy🙂
All the slow mo at the end was great. Nice job ladies.
thanks maam
Awesome Content! Maybe a list of upcoming projectiles will help with the contributors anticipation. Keep up the great work!
Those projectiles were amazingly stable! great video Guys
Englishman here. It’s pronounced Lee. Leeeeeeeeeeee
Dammit OG!
You get me so many stupid looks when I bust out laughing out loud. That Lincoln bit was PRICELESS!
Excellent video and you guys are hilarious! Seriously you two together is always non stop funny and great information on shotgun ballistics. Slo-mo was off the chain!! The one through the gel block going backwards was super cool!
thanks Wilson
Your knowledge of reloading is extensive and outstanding!
HAHA! The Lincoln's head comment was hilarious!!! ENJOYED that!
I call fake on the phone shot. OG nailed the big penny in the same spot as the phone. That is showmanship! Keep these great videos coming. Thanks
Long time fan keep up the good work! I never get tired of Officer Gregg we all could use some good humor 👍 For a light projectile with no expansion (for the most part) I was really impressed with the energy dump on those targets, great work to who made these whatever his name is 😆
thanks!!
fantastic job Mr. Leigh...hats off to you sir👍
I Thank You..😊
Best slow mo yet! Thank you for posting
thanks William!
Great video. I love the slow motion videos, where you really see just how they flew. 😎👍
thanks!
I love the way you captured the projectile returning. This stresses safety.
Those slugs were sweet...he could easily sale them..he did great making em..great video guys..loved it..thanks
Like the new format. Shoot first, ask slowmo later.... very cool. Great round, great work.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback
Just wow. The energy transfer of those rounds was incredible 👍👍
I miss the slow motions being interleaved between the normal motion video, ...except for when that clay head stopped the round. I'm so glad you shut up about that and showed it at the end. So maybe sometime play the best slow motions at the end... Thank you again. This stuff is so cool to see in slow motion!
That was neat how it bounced off the steel after sailing through the gel. Good stuff guys.
Wow! I like the slowmo at the end. And that clay was some of the kewlest I have seen! That blew up really well!
Thanks. Got a number of people who only watched about half the video and thought we didn't show any HS footage!
thank you for all the work you do
Really loved the slowmo section with the fantastic music. The third shot into the bag was spectacular, when the wadding hit it changes and is cool. The clay maybe expensive but wow, it showed the accuracy and energy dump. The ballistic gel shots are always cool but the Gummy Bear hit was great and then the block. The round went through and hit the plate but didn't tumble back. It was reflected back on the same axis, wobbling but returned wadding first. I watched it a few times.
The backwards flying slug was wild. I had to show it twice so people wouldn't miss that part
Very cool. You guys just get better and better 👍👍👍
thanks!
Great video guys! keep up the humor OG, seems we all could use some dad jokes and 90's hip hop references from time to time, thanks!
