- Filmed safety at a proper shooting range, we test another design by Evan. These are massive and were difficult to prepare so they would work. Because they were so heavy, they had to be shot at low velocity- around 1000 fps. They were really long, which I predicted would cause stability issues, but they did use an elongated diabolo shape, which can only help.
This one really surprised me and made me rethink the debate over velocity and penetration. Evan has a remarkable success-rate for his unusual and creative designs.

Yup, ... and very interesting to see the way it passed through (with a movement a bit like a snooker ball falling into a pocket) : a lot of energy, no deformation

Impact force appears severe enough to kill with blunt force trauma.

Even those big, heavy Minie' balls didn't come close to punching through! Those were 1400 fps I think
TAOFLEDERMAUS the only explanation I can think of is the slow moving copper slug had enough time to push the lead out of the way instead of dumping its energy into the plate maybe?

I actually expected it to penetrate. Two ounces of a material harder than lead is hard to stop. I haven't done any calculations but the energy from two ounces of brass spread out over the area of the nose of that projectile has to be pretty high PSI.

That's probably it. If it's too fast the deformation has to happen quickly and it probably bursts off to the side making a flatter but wider crater, while more time and the big surface help to deform a much softer material while the huge mass keeps marching on.

Years of shooting several .45-70 rifles has shown me that a big, slow, heavy, rather long bullet (~405-450 grains) with a very high sectional density has legendary penetration. That brass slug was a freight train.
It actually wiggled on it's way through....lol That's crazy.

I'm still confused how this went through. It has all the opposite traits you want for high penetration. It also did jack shit to the aluminium plate. Also, in older vids slugs designed for penetration got stuck in the lead plate without fully passing through.
Maybe lead has some weird properties that makes penetration easier with a slow and blunt projectile?

When tanks use long rod penetrators, the amount of penetration is almost directly related to the length of the penetrator. I wonder if you could penetrate the lead plate using a 3 inch long .30 caliber lead dart and a sabot!

@@Koichifirst It would depend on the slug speed vs the vibration hertz. It's due to the way they shed energy. Aluminuminumium is far more elastic than lead and sheds it through vibration. Lead sheds high impact energy by heating up from solid state to liquid state, and getting moved out of the way by pressure. If you look closely, the penetrator makes a shift when it is almost through. At that point, it had lost enough energy it was no longer capable of melting the lead ahead of it, but still had enough energy to simply SHOVE it's way through the remaining lead. AR500 plate wouldn't give up so easily.

Your breakdown of how the different materials dispurse the energy from the impact was very enlightening.
Maybe it's something a first year engineering student knows maybe you have to have a PhD. I don't know... With your simple explanation of something that I'm sure is far more complex I feel like I completely understand exactly what happened on impact.
You should comment more on the physics behind some of the other stuff we see here and other places as well. I know I can always use a little more education.

As an actual physics major might say, "incomplete, but basically accurate" I was not a physic's major, but did take several credits of algebra-based physic's in college, and movement, and the dynamic flow of energy (can never be created nor destroyed, but just changes form and transfers between mass/particles.) has always been a special interest / hobby . YT can be highly useful for this, if you know where to look, and are willing to wade through the ocean of misinformation, bias, etc., and remember the basic rules. Amazing ! that footage of the slug actually going through the giant Bitcoin when You really slowed it down showed it wiggling its tail like a very happy puppy dog ! I thought it might go all the way through,but stay with its nose out the back and tail flush with the front . @@taofledermaus Tire shop will give you used wheel weights for free most of the time. That is what stock car guys use for ballast in their cars sometimes.

If that is the energy imparted into the lead plate then I hope that these rounds are never used in public because a person who is wearing a balistic vest is going to get the chest caved in regardless of penetration, it will be a kill shot. Even after going straight through that thick lead plate, the slug looked largely in tact flying behind it. It was tumbling at that point so you can see it pretty well. That's amazing.
