I just want to say THANK YOU! A1 job on info and sources. Paint AND Graco BOTH recommended size 13 spray tip. 13 too big and sprays GLOPS even and perfect ashusted spray. Changed to size 11 tip like you and perfect. NO DRIPS with graco sprayer now. I was gonna return this because they say this sprayer isnt good for THICK paint. You've proven them wrong with these GREAT results. Thanks again for trying it out.
lakerdude42 glad to hear! Just take your time and you can do it. Prep is everything. Look over everything after you prime and make any adjustments at that point. I’d love to see the before and after pics. You can DM me on Instagram at @buildwithbc. Good luck!
Wish there was some closeup angle shots on the doors to see how flat the finish looks after dry. Any orange peel? I have Graco airless sprayers like u, but seems some painters like to use hvlp.
Outstanding video series. If my wife sees these videos, I know what I’m going to be doing over the next month… I’m not trying to play safety police - honest question. I noticed you don’t wear respirator when spray painting. Especially indoors, have you never had an issue with that?
Great job! What sheen is that paint? Semi gloss or Satin? I am about to do my kitchen cabinets and just figured I would use semi gloss for the easier cleanup and durability, but some painter friends are telling me that everyone uses satin now, even in kitchens. Apparently some people don't like the higher gloss sheen these days, and satin is the new goto kitchen sheen. I still feel like I should go with a semi gloss for the better smooth feel and durability/cleanup. However, given the amount of work involved and the aforementioned advice, I am second guessing my decision, especially since I might be selling the house in the near future. So I am also looking for additional opinions/advice thanks.
It’s a pretty simple process. Tackle a small bathroom vanity to try your hand at it. Homedepot rents paint sprayers. Just make sure you have the right tip and you are good to go.
‘ Cabinets look great! Just to be clear, you did not sand down the surfaces of the cabinet panels/rails/styles and cabinet base structures before spraying the extreme bond primer?
That is correct, no sanding using the Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer. All you have to do is wipe everything clean first. You could certainly sand it if you wanted to. I have started wiping all my cabinets down with a 3M surface prep pad while I wash them. I really like the results. I highly recommend it.
I’m feel so much braver going into this after watching your videos. I’ve painted everything but kitchen cabinets. We bought our home a year ago and the owner used unprepped latex with a brush and the lap lines are horrible. To boot, a year later and it’s peeling everywhere. Can’t afford to replace the whole cabinets yet so invested into all the materials and been schooling myself on YT. I start the 1st step this weekend with sanding down the lap lines and then next weekend it’s off to the races. Thank you! I’ll let you know how it goes.
Awesome!! You’ll need to sand that latex off of those cabinets if they weren’t prepped properly. I had to do that for my friend’s kitchen last year. I used 80grit sand paper on my orbital sander connected to a dust collector. It ripped right through the latex and made quick work of the job. So happy you are trying this on your own! Tag me in your progress pics on my IG account. @buildwithbc
@@buildwithbc I don’t have to sand it down to the wood though do I? I experimented with a single door outside with my orbital sander and it took forever. I thought i wanted to stain them. It was a failure. I used paint stripper for hours, then used a paint scraper, dried then sanded. It was a nightmare. Thus, I decided to paint them a brighter white (current white us almost yellow). I test sanded an inconspicuous area and it smoothed out nicely. I figure after this use some mineral spirits to clean them up well. I dunno - what do you think? Then prime, putty and Re-sand with 220 grit?
@@lmelhardy8656 you just need to make sure that you aren’t painting over anything that wasn’t properly prepped by the first owner. You should be ok if you sand the existing latex down to get the brush lines out and the paint is well adhered. The risk of not removing the old paint is that you don’t know what was done by the first owner. You don’t need to sand everything all the way down to the wood.
@@buildwithbc perfect. I’ll show you before sand after going by your videos with only some variations such as the using an HLVP for all painting - but I’ve been torn in type of paint until I read/saw what you used. I have a Sherwin Williams account and they are really helpful over there. Your wood putty-filler was an awesome tip/demo. Question about caulking though. That wasn’t really clear to me - what do I do with the current caulking and when I tape the boxes how do I address this - tape over it or remove, paint and then re-caulk.
Great job with the series! I just bought an X5 and am going to spray all of my cabinets in the kitchen and 3 bathrooms. How well do you think the extreme bond you used will adhere to laminated pressboard panels?
Bradley, thank you for the kind words. You are going to love the X5 sprayer. It is so simple to use and has been a work horse for me. The extreme bond primer can bond to glass so you should be just fine with it on your laminated pressboard. I have sprayed it over melamine and it bonded. If you are ever in doubt, find a spot where you can test it out and see what it does for you. I’d love to see your projects while you are working on them. You can DM me on Instagram @buildwithBC.
Thank you for the videos. Watched all 6 and I'm energized to take on my projects. Your opinion: Graco Ultra or Project Painter Plus? I'll be doing kitchen cabinets, 4 bedrooms, and full size doors.
I’d go with the project painter plus here. It’s extremely versatile and easy to use. I had the X5 far before I had the ultra and I still prefer the X5 over the Ultra whenever I am spraying more than a quart or two of paint. Send me pics on Instagram @buildwithbc when you are done, I’d love to see the before and after pics!!
Love the look of your cabinets. Getting ready to do the same. Noticed you used SW Emerald. To confirm, SW Emerald Urethane? Did you go with semi-gloss?
Thanks for the info. Tell me the name of the bigger sprayer & tip you used for the topcoat again. Also, did you shoot straight paint or cut it with water or flowtrol?
Also, be sure to buy the a emerald Urethane Enamel. I have had some people confuse this with Sherwin Williams regular Emerald latex paint. They are not the same.
titans nation the paint is holding up amazing. In fact last week my son unknowingly ran the shop vac along the face of the lower cabinets while we were cleaning up after setting the backsplash. It left dark black plastic rub marks all over. I was able to grab a wet towel and scrub the doors and cabinet faces clean with no paint damage. I have painted all my bathroom cabinets the same way with the same results. You could use a de-glosser or some 320 grit sand paper to prep before you wash them if you want that extra peace of mind.
do i have to put a undercoat. On i want to spray my kitchen cubbards doors but i don't no if i have to rub the m.d.f doors down before i paint or undercoat them
Gary, no, it’s much too thick to push through that tip. If you just want to buy one tip I would buy the 212 and spray both the primer and the paint through it. You’ll get fantastic results going that way.

I used the Graco Magnum X5 with a Graco 208 fine finish tip in a RacX guard. I didn’t thin the paint at all. I just mixed the can and sprayed.

How well has the Emerald Product held up? I'm looking into painting my cabinets soon as well

Take your time sanding and filling after you prime everything. To me that is the most important step in the whole process.
do i have to put a undercoat. On i want to spray my kitchen cubbards doors but i don't no if i have to rub the m.d.f doors down before i paint or undercoat them
Apologies if you already mentioned this: how many gallons of primer and paint did you use?
On this particular project I used 1 gallon of Extreme bond primer and 1.5 gallons of Emerald paint.
I think the graco is def work it. I could do all mine with that. I can't justfy getting both sprayers.
You certainly don’t need both. I just wanted to show a couple options.
Can I use the 208 ff tip for the sw extreme primer too?
