Making a Huge Lipless Crankbait Lure out of Wood

- I really enjoyed making this jumbo lipless crankbait fishing lure out of basswood. This handmade lure has everything from detailed gill carving, foiling, beautiful paint job, to internal rattles and through wire. This is a great bait for saltwater fishing and would probably do well for catching tuna, roosterfish, dorado, jack or maybe even GT!

I just found your channel today and really find your content helpful in learning new techniques to make my own lures
It's such a great joy and pleasure to watch "a true craftsman at work", thank you.
Thank you very much!
Nice beautiful fishing lure I have a suggestion for you if you ever run out of hot glue for your hot glue gun you can also use double sided sticky tape to hold the pieces of wood together and it's much easier to pull apart after
Thank you for watching and for your suggestion. I bought some double sided tape for a small cnc machine I got. Might try it out for this as well.
Whenever you post, I know it's going to be another great lure! Not only is the size and paint job on that lure impressive, but the way you did its internal architecture is off the chart!
Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it!
🙌🏼👏🏼you are a master, beautiful lure, great job. I love your videos 📹, greetings from New Jersey
Glad you like them and thank you for your support!
One of the lure maker, that whole video can be watched till end even it’s long. Incredible ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
a great way to prevent the boubbles , after you put on the clear coat you blast it with a heat gun or similar tool :)
Yes, but I have found that you need to be quick and careful so as not to heat the wood or you can cause it to off-gas and make more bubbles. What I learned about KBS is that it needs to be applied in very thin layers.
You make sketching out this lure look so simple, yet while watching this video I can tell you put a lot of careful thought and planning into this project. That vibrant color scheme is certainly going to attract attention in the open waters. Fantastic!
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
Thank you very much for the detailed film from the sketch to the finished product!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Incredible build. Really enjoyed the larger lure factor. A thumbs up for more of these please! ;) Well done!
Thanks, will do!
Banging video bud all round
Thanks, I'm glad you like it!
Another 🔥build. Excellent work on the internal construction of this one, to say the least. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge!!! 👍👍👍👍
You bet, thank you for watching!
Loved your video...very well done indeed! We make our lures very similarly (I focus mostly on Striper and Bass designs); I was going to say that the foil can be very tricky as it "ages"...have had several beautiful lures foil "crinkle" in time which is frustrating to say the least. I see you like to take creative liberties with your color which is quite a dazzling display of skill. No doubt a cruising Wahoo would find your offering irresistible..! Subscribed and I look forward to your other works - tight lines!
Thank you very much for your comment. So far I have been fortunate to not have any problems with my foil. Hopefully it will stay that way, but I know that not all experiments work out. Thanks for subscribing and watching!
Hi michael, it is Charlie I have been watching the vids!
Hey Charlie, thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy them!
I need to buy a zimmtex shirt
I wish I had yr skills Mr Zimmtex.. but cos of u iv learned heaps n still learning.... thank you. ❤❤
So nice of you! Keep learning and practicing! I learn new stuff all the time and try to make each lure better than the last.
Awesome build! One of my favorites so far. Well thought out and planned as usual. Keep up the great work brother.
Thank you very much!
You truely are the living definition of perfectionist 👌
Thank you so much, I try!
You are just the best maker fo lure broh!!!! Better then Marling bates, he is good but your vid is just more giving, thx broh for sharing
I appreciate that!
I agree 100%
I really like the ink colors over the foil, nice job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Once again a master piece of work, GREAT JOB. 🎣🎣🎣
Wow, thanks!
Have to admire your creativity. Looks amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
That is a work of art! Well done.
Thank you so much!
Such great knowledge in this video. That rubbing alcohol trick🎉🎉. Great lure/vid as always.
Many thanks!
Your painting is amazing.
Thank you! I really like these alcohol inks.
Great skills
Thank you!
I experienced the same thing with kbs. I looked online when I had issues and read that sometimes putting it on the rotisserie can make it bubble because of the drying time and it is constantly moving. I started letting it drip cure and had better results. Learned that the hard way in the beginning. It's great when it turns out, but it can be finicky. Great job on the bait. Looks amazing!
Thank you very much for watching and for sharing! The best way to get better is by doing!
@zimmtex 100%. Keep up the content, love watching.
Great work :)
Thank you! Cheers!
So beautiful lure! Congrat!
Thanks!
KBS will always have bubbles. It’s got a short shelf life and about a 70% waste factor if you don’t use it in a month or so. That’s my experience. Perhaps try the spray KBS
KBS is awesome! Keep in glass jar in a dark cool place, with some cling film under the lid. Change the cling film each time you use it. Dip your lures slowly, don't use a brush and you shouldn't have any issues with bubbles. I have been using the same jar of kbs for months!
So I have moved my KBS into a jar and store it in A cool dark place to hopefully keep it longer. I have used the spray version of KBS a couple of times, but I do not believe it is durable enough for fishing lures as you can easily scratch through it with your fingernail.
WOW ❤
Thanks!
Great video as always!!! Awesome lure!
Thanks for watching!
Another gem, Mike, in both the lure and the video. I'm amazed, though, that you took this complex bait all the way through final finish work before testing its action! That's not like you. It looks good in the water, but I wonder if the side to side vibration would have been even faster and more pronounced with less lead in the center section. Seven-plus ounces is a LOT of weight in a 7"lure. I wonder how this big lipless crankbait's action compares to that of the excellent "shimmy" in the big, orange, lipped crankbait you built two years ago.
Thanks so much for the experimentation with Diamond Coat and your discoveries. I bought some a month ago because I, too, was looking for a finish coat that was thinner and wouldn't hide subtle contours. Now, because of your work, I know how to use it for optimal results. Best, Chris (in Maine)
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting! I wish you the best of luck in your lure making journey!
First time watching, nice finish!
Pretty work congratulations.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful job... Respect...
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice job!
Thank you! Cheers!
This lure somewhat resembles a Luhr-Jensen Sugar Shad from the 80s. It had fins molded into the body but other than that it's similar.
I'm not familiar with that one; had to look it up. I see what you mean about the fins. I wonder how those affect the action? Interesting!
@@zimmtex I would think fins dampened the action. This was never a wonder bait for me, I did better with the Rattle Spot and Rattletraps. These were more of a cover water quickly search bait for me. In the early 90s my Ranger had a factory installed flasher in the dash and my power poles were on the end of a rope. We still had to search for fish. A new fully rigged 361 Comanche was $25K, what are they today 98K. Gosh I'm old...
wow!!
Thanks!
This thing looks great! The ink paint you use gives a really vibrant effect. Do you have a video on how you make your lure holder and your rotisserie? It looks reallyhelpful.
Thank you! I don't have a video of the rotisserie, but maybe I should.
Impresionante 👏
Thank you!
I'd like to make a suggestion to you concerning your rattles. Whatever size hole you use for your rattles if you take a hollow ground steel punch and out a piece of aluminum or aluminum can piece super glue it to the wood and when the BB hits it'll be pretty damn loud. Also you'll find there's a big difference in using lead as opposed to a brass BB. Also just dip the entire lure in the kbs and hand by wire from nose and you'll eliminate all the problems you just created.
I didn't think about a BB sleeve, but it did occur to me that a plate at at the ends would be better. I like this KBS, but I'm definately learning some lessons the hard way. Thanks for the tips and for watching!
@@zimmtex just dip the Lauren the KBS and hang it to dry. Brother it's not one of those epoxies that you brush on and spin on a wheel. Just dip it let it hang and you're done. That's what it was made for
For sure!
Increíble trabajo 🔝
Una pregunta,de que tipo de madera está fabricado?
Thank you! Basswood
How do you transfer the gill pattern from the paper to the lure
Great question! You draw your pattern on one side, then tape it drawing side to the window. The window acts as a makeshift light box so you can draw the pattern again on the back side of the paper. Then when you put it on the lure and draw over it again it will transfer the graphite to the lure. Thanks for watching!
Would like a hōwto on a topwater plunker
I'll add it to my list. Thanks for watching!
Hello, good good good
Thank you very much!
hi great video i have a question from minute 28:20 when painting how much pressure did you use and which nozzle 0.4? Thanks in advance
Hello! I had it set on 30psi and a 0.35mm nozzle. Thanks for watching!
@@zimmtex i have to thank you
Bonjour
Quel bois utilisé vous ?
Super travail
I primarily use basswood these days. Thank you for watching!
Nice lure...can you put the lure inside of microwave oven to soften the hot glue?
You can, but it makes more of a mess because the glue can easily re-melt.
@@zimmtex owh..ok..and for the rattle i put mine into copper tube and seal both end with soda can and super glue..make really loud noise and dont have to worry about the bb when epoxy the bait together
That's a really good idea!
Very very nice and good job
Thank you! Cheers!
😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍очень круто
Thanks!
Wie haben Sie die richtige Bleimenge ermittelt ?
I used my experience with smaller lipless crankbaits and scaled it up.
Belo 🎉
маленькую приманку сложнее делать
Very true!
👍👍👍👍🔥👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
Make sure you say SALTWATER. I was hoping to find another bass Lure maker. Good work though
This could probably be adapted for bass, but I know what you mean. Thanks for watching!
I don't fish
