I hope the algorithm of RUclips will favor this video, and be the most viewed ID.3 video so far of this channel. Thumbs up!
Thanks for this review. It’s nice to hear a review from a normal user, rather than an auto site/magazine reviewer.
Very thorough review. Pretty much covered everything. Hopefully the software update will fix all our problems. Well done 👏.
RHD car have a few problems though. Like the wipers which were not switched to RHD or the app where for preheating a LHD car is shown. So which side do you choose for the driver?
I love you seeing you in your usual route finally with your car... it's way better than your old Matrix.
Yes, way better!
Excellent update / review Chris! There is no substitute for living with and driving an EV!
By the way - we put in the $100 deposit on the 1st Edition ID.4 here in the US! We're going to get a blue one. :-)
And the 1st Edition is SOLD OUT! It took less than 24 hours!
They need to have a direct way for drivers to input and correct information - *especially* about charging stations.
Thx for the video. I‘m getting my ID.3 Tech in November 🤗
Excellent overview. Very concise and detailed. The best walkthrough I have seen this far - for ANY car.
thank you for honest review 👌. Look forward to see the ID 4 and Enyaq
Very good review as always Chris. Software and UX seem to be the main areas for improvement but glad to see the drive is good. Keep up the good YT work and see you on your next Live feed.
Herzlichen Dank für das Video. Wir werden unseren ID.3 Anfang Oktober abholen und Dein Video ist die perfekte Vorbereitung.
Great info, thanks for the review. Nice to see and hear that (at least for you) pretty much all of the main things work well and are high quality. Many of the software things will of course be improved during the months to come. Drive, noise level and charging are really good and I think that efficiency is above average as well.
Thanks for the video, and thanks for being a beta tester for the ID platform! The good news is that it seems that most of your dislikes can be addressed by software updates. I’m pleased that you are out there doing this, by the time my ID Buzz arrives the car will be much improved.
Thanks for the Video. Looking forward to the ID 4.
I don't understand the remarks about disappointing consumption. Everyone's 90 and 120kph ID3 range tests have been excellent.
It is just more than some other cars. Kona, Model 3,... But not a big thing.
@@BatteryLife I think ID3 actally outperformed the Kona on the 1000km tests so far. M3 fair enough. But nice video, thanks!
@@BatteryLife Actually it's not that bad compared with Kona, range wise it's true that it has less range but the Kona has a bigger battery, but it has a similar efficiency, at least at constant speeds. The ID.3 has a net battery of 58kwh, but its actual usable battery is a little lower (due to heat losses), while the Kona's battery has about 64kwh usable battery, that extra battery explains the range difference.
@@BatteryLife can it be a problem with the way you use the break?
Bjorn was surprised how efficient this car is.

Very good Review. Keep on, cant wait for the ID.4 review!
Me too
Hi Chris, again a very clear, personal and honest opinion about the id.3. As I am following since dec.2012 the e-cars (fisker karma, tesla model-s etc.) I am very pleased to see my favourite brand being active with it. Agree that the drive support systems sometimes do more harm then joy. Personaly I don’t like them anyway. About the brakes, it’s sound good to me. In my current car, an Audi 100 1989, you must also press firm on the brakes, I love it. It gives a good feedback of slowing down the car. Sadly the id.3 don’t supports a hook at the back. It makes the id.3 less versatile to use - even the vw beetle of my dad had one! I hope you will soon be able to give an review of the id.4. In case I will become in the lucky circumstanses to buy a new car, it will probably that ev. Kind regards, Bertus
I like your practical approach to a car. What does it matter that in front of the windshield its a hard plastic - you never touch it anyway.
Great practical review
Great review!
You are really thorough and honest, I am subbing! Hope you do an ID4 when you can
I am trying!
Hey Chris, probably your best video to date. Glad you could give an honest review, people can be overly protective of new purchases but you called out the things you dont like. Sounds like alot of it is software based and that can easily be remedied. Sounds like thr brakes have a large deadzone, might be worth asking VW if this can be adjusted
It's funny, I saw a review of the id4 and the ui was a lot slower than you are showing. Great honest review. Thanks.
Excellent review.
Hope you will speak about all those points when there will be an update ! You share a lot of details anybody talks about :)
👍 love the genuine opinion
careful with keyless entry, relay attacks are real
I thought the id.3 implements NXPs Ultrawideband technology which is (as far as currently known) immune to relay attacks since it measures the key's distance by roundtrip time at different frequencies instead of pure signal strength ?
Nice review. So long as you don't get a message for changing your oil, you should be okay in the long run.
Great review Chris. I am looking forward to a winter review in the snow. I'm thinking about getting the 48kWh ID.3 next year in the UK. For 50 years I've driven front wheel drive vehicles (FWD), so a bit apprehensive to change now to RWD but I believe EVs are better balanced.
I did the same experience. The late brake reaction was very irritating when I did a testdrive some days ago. Maybe you get a feeling for it after some time. But in danger situations it could be strange.
You are the best :)
Physical buttons are the new luxury items in cars. Imagine a button you can press without looking, that activates a function of the car in a fraction of a second. No menus / submenus, just one click !
No meeting cars have been blinking you for driving with high beams? If not that is just awsome.
Thanks a lot!
Only thing I hated about this video: The ad for Toyota's "self-charging hybrids" that played before it 🤮 How is it legal to say that a car that runs entirely on gas is "up to 50% electric"?! Sorry, slightly OT, I know 🙈 Of course Chris, your content is exceptional, as usual 🤗
Because it is NOT run entirely on gas [facepalm] It charges every time it brakes whether it's regen braking only or regen and physical brakes. It also charges every time it runs downhill. The charging using gas only is less than 5% and the rest is using the kinetic and potential energy normally going to waste as heat in the brakes. Newton mechanics 101...
@@MovieViking Ah then, Mr Engineer, sir, riddle me this: where did the kinetic and potential energy come from? Did unicorns push the car up the hill?
Here's an exercise: Draw a box around the car, thus defining a system. Energy goes into the system, transportation comes out. What happens inside the box is irrelevant, all we need to know is that it's a system for converting energy into transportation. If all of the energy going into your system is in the form of gasoline, then your system is 100% gas powered. Sure, your system might be really good at doing that conversion, but how it does it and what intermediate steps are involved is completely irrelevant. If you want your system to run on electricity half of the time, you're going to have to start putting electricity into it at some point. That's how real engineers analyse things.
Another helpful hint: Before you get all pedantic invoking Newton's name (inappropriately, I might add), try to make sure that you're actually correct 😉👍
Hopefully when I get my Id4 this spring the software will be sorted out.
Good report! A contester for my next car (2023), hopefully bugs sorted then. I drive a Skoda Citigo-e and the lane assist is a pain but there's a big button on dashboard for turning it off. It doesn't remember temperature settings if you leave car for longer but a quick exit to a shop won't effect it. So not everything is better with modern technology 😜! Shame with tow bar, Skoda Enyaq and VW iD4 will have it, might have to investigate them too even though I don't want/need a SUV!
Thank you for your videos! Hopefully getting 1st plus too. Looking forward to that. Could you do a 110km 1000km test too? I am curius if there is much travel time distance if you charge cleverly.
I will do the racobe test soon. 90, 110,130 and 150 kmh, but only 60km each.
ID.4 was just introduced recently... cant wait for you opinion
Can you do a charging test at 50kW charger? Both 120A and 125A versions.
How is it, compare to your old Zoe?
Moin Chris!
Keine Probleme damit bisher.
on the Kia Soul EV the adaptive cruise can be adjusted form 1 to 4 seconds, really love that feature
its the same with VW group cars but with fossile cars the cruise control does not slow you down if you drive faster, it just disables cruise controll with few warnings. here the car starts to brake. chris does not have travel assist as its only in max version. with travel assisit the car drives by itself for few minutes, seems to vary
Chris, this was an excellent review of the ID.3. So many pluses and so few minuses that you have underscored, but only one you educatedly omitted - The superior quality vis a vis Tesla 3 (painting, doors, silence, insulation rubbers, suspension, much better A/C and extra space - specially on the rear and on top).
Hello Chris,
Thank you for the reviews. I hope you will be testing it a lot in Wintertime, especially in the snow. Do you live in a snowy part of Germany? Could you go in the Alps with it? How will it manage in the cold and in deeper snow? I can't wait to hear about it.
The real challenge: loads of snow AND steep roads ... That’s what we have here. The Kona doesn’t do too well under these conditions, the previous version of the Zoe managed okayish (haven’t driven the latest one).
@@CaroAbebe the Kona is front-wheel drive. The ID.3 is rear-wheel drive. I would like to know how different it feels on the snow.
Incredible, the amount of solar panels on roofs
Nice video, hope you will send all your findings to VW, so they can work on it :)
I will make an extra video after the first update for the First Movers Club. I don't think the first update can be affected,by new things.
Great, practical report! Question: Does the ID.3 have speed-sign detection? Can you adapt to the speed by pressing the speed icon in the display? It would be great to have such a / or similar feature.
Road signs are recognized. You can set the Cruise control to change speed automatically to that. But I have that off.
Another nice video Chris, honest opinion as usual.
I know you prefer rear wheel drive, but I took the Kona for it's FWD as where I live we (should) have 4 to 5 months of snow a year. Am a bit concerned though about regen on downhill icy/ snowy roads, turn it off I guess.
@timemachine_194 As I understand it ID3 weight distribution is 50/50 where the Kona is 55/45 and yes experience with BMW 320 and Merc C270 in the snow here wasn't good.
now that is a nice car, we mourn not the Hyundai Matrix - this is the review I have been waiting for,,, daily use
In our new ID.3 it seems that I can switch the adaptive cruise control to only speed limit dependent cruise control by the button on the steering wheel. I have not yet tried it but it should be possible - contrary to what you say in the video at about 9:00.
Mode is to switch between CC and speed limiter. I want a not adaptive CC.
As always a nice video. Until today nobody mentioned that you can reduce the power when charging AC. Can you tell me what the lowest level is ? This is helpful for people with photovoltaics on the roof.
It just says reduced. No number.
Nice review. Some of the software issues need to be fixed. Problems for me is unfortunately too many things that should have physical buttons , are rather having to use touch screen buttons and submenus in today’s electric car. That needs to change. .
That is the trend.
Battery Life I reworded my commentary as I realized it wasn’t clear what I was trying to express vs what one might read it as. In case that affects your comment.
German Bjorn :) Great video! :)
Great review, but as far as control and acceleration I think your rear wheel drive is preferable to my 2020 Soul EV (64KWH), it has very strong torque steer, I hit the accelerator when passing and the car pulled to the side when I started to overtake a truck / trailer, something I have to watch out for. Mind you winter snow front drive is likely better.
Just answered my question.
Great review! Question: you said that you have 2 dogs; how do they (or even just one of them) fit into the trunk? Can you do a video on “ID3 with dogs 🐶 “? Thanks 🙏
I have them on the back seat not in the trunk. Trunk is Golf size.
Thanks for the great review. How does the lane keeping compare to a Tesla? Good centering and can it navigate modest turns on the highway?
Lane keep is ping pong. Just for safety. Travel assist not in plus.
Can you put lane assist off in the favourites? Sounds like you'd want to do that if possible.
Nope
Regarding your brake feel, you have new brake pads, and almost all of your 3000km+ has been on the Highway, with little use of brakes. I think that your braking strength and feel will improve once you have bedded in the pads and discs a little bit more.
What he’s describing is a common remark when brake pedals blend regen and friction brakes. Toyota hybrid drivers also say the same thing. It’s something to get used to, but it’s not really about the pads setting in.
@@borisdemelo yeah. It is problem to the point of even Formula E drivers and teams having to spend lot of effort to fine tune the brake feel and balance to have good response and it is constant never ending hunt. Having listened to races and the team radios..... one of the common "my car doesn't feel good to drive" complain over team radio in practice session etc. Is exactly: the brake balance feels of, it isn't braking like I want it to brake. The front/back is loose on braking and then the engineers usually say back try this brake map or move balance this many notches that way.
If it over all doesn't work, that has been a season ruiner for teams. Driver every race complaining about not being confident with the brakes and thus not being able get the break points to optimum.
Brake feel with regen is one of the most complex issues in the electronic drive train, since it changes with the battery state, brake condition etc. It will feel ok in hard braking, when the brakes take over and regen also slam to full to help and it is nice at light with just regen. But in the middle there is the mushy ground of fine tuning the balance the regen and brakes. Also it might have little hesitancy or floaty feeling since the car applies what it thinks is the correct balance, but then constantly adjusts it in response to sensors. If it thinks it can get more out of regen, but battery won't regen as much, it has to quickly balance more to brake calipers etc.
I would assume it over time gets better with makers having more experience and having finetuned the algorhitms to better response. Still it is probably one of those "if you want amazing brake feel buy a performance sports EV" with one of their selling points being their test drivers having spent countless hours fine tuning the brake balance and algorhitms to get good regen and good brake pedal feeling.
I dislike the fact that VW still has not given me a delivery date :-(. Pre-ordering the car on the first day, first hour and first minute gives you no advantage.
They have copied Tesla exactly on how they handled their prebookers
You should demand an upgrade to ID.4. ;-)
@@abraxastulammo9940 I would hate an ID.4 because it is far too big for my family. I remember once I arrived at Frankfurt airport and the car hire people gave me some SUV and my Wife was angry because the car was too big and my Daughter was crying because the car was so ugly. I walked back to the car hire place and said do you have something smaller, they said sorry all they have is a Fiat 500. I said I will take it, they looked at me like I was crazy. I and my family got in the Fiat 500 and loved it. :-) You are right, they should at least upgrade me to a 1st Max for free!
@Cristi The Americans do not have to drive and park in towns and cities with a road system that was designed in medieval times :-). VW ID.3 turning circle of a VW up!
@@marcusevjourney566 But here comes the kicker: the ID.4 has the same small turning circle! 😱
17:02 Wow, The efficiency! Das Auto! Bravissimo! :-D
Regarding lane assist I share your pain, same problem in my Ioniq. Be interested to see how regen from the rear wheels works in slippery conditions
But you have a button to turn lane assist of.
@@BatteryLife yes but I have to do it every time I start the car😠
I have the ioniq PHEV and only turned the button off once. Never came on again. Is the BEV DIFFERENT?
It seems like VW would better get rid of the touchscreen and the infotainment system and put a few buttons back into the car.
Can you have lane assist on/off button in favorites?
Nope
Also please do a, like or dislike in winter when you forget to pre-heat and have to go out without any planning. I hope all the essential operations are available without having to take your gloves off to make the touch surfaces work.
It has seat heaters, steering wheel heater and electric heating. Warm in no time.
Hi Chris, about the regen for comparison is it closer to M3 or Zoe?
Zoe. M3 can do one pedal driving.
thanks for the review...a little more like the ordinary customer rather than the fussy journalist..
Thanks for this, Chris.
I got mine 2 days ago & haven't made any long trips yet, but it's good to know that when the software occasionally goes bonkers it's not just my car.
One thing you didn't mention: delay getting off the mark at lights. I'll probably learn the way of it, but at the moment it takes longer to get the wheels turning than it did on my Golf with stop-start enabled - press clutch, select 1st gear & go was quicker. Have you found that?
If you auto hold on, there is a delay. And eco mode a bit. Other modes the power is there right away.
@@BatteryLife Ah, OK. At the moment I have to hold the brake, otherwise it creeps like an ICE with automatic, but still have a delay. I'll have to read about auto hold properly. Thanks, Chris
Swipe down, there is a favourite Auto Hold.
@@BatteryLife Thank you again
@@BatteryLife OK, found it. It makes driving more relaxing. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain. (Didn't even know that hidden menu was there!)
4:10 Regarding the tow hook; it's worth mentioning that you can get a cycle carrier or a 300 liter cargo box as original VW accessories, here, shown on the norwegian website (also check out the nice cooler, something for your trips? :-) www.volkswagen.no/no/service/tilbehor-og-deler/anbefalt-tilbehor-til-id3.html#sykkelstativ It fits onto something that looks like a tow hook hidden behind the license plate, like this: www.speakev.com/threads/id-3-specifications.143446/post-2708663
The fact that the ID.C has a load-thru system for skis and other long items, is also great.
Pity it’s not yet available in Australia
Are there no reflection from the white in the front window by sun?
Nope, not at all.
Those lights look amazing
ID3 seems to deliver after all. Good 1000km performance, silent, nice to drive etc. Really happy to see it even though I may never buy one myself. Maybe some of the other coming MEB cars, which all this bodes well for. Hope there will be upgrades that make cruise control an lane assist non-annoying.
How did you get the 3 month lease "first mover" credit? Thanks!
When I ordered the car I could choose. First mover - unfinished software or delivery in Dec.
Good review! Many Thanks! The VW ID.3 looks great but for the price I still prefer the Renault Zoe. The ID.3 is a better electric car, but the Zoe is a better car overall.
Better braking system, better interior. The seats on the Zoe are a bit less confortable, that's true, but the overall ergonomy of the Zoe is much better, more like a traditional ICE car. Why the hell VW have put the gear shifter behind the steering well? And why a twisting mecanism instead of a simple push/pull? I still prefer it in the central console just like in an ICE, that's feels more natural and you don't even have to look at it. You grab it and push or pull and it remember if you were in D or B even after having turned the car off.
Every single function in the Zoe have a physical button. Critical functions like lane assist, eco mode and so on all have a physical button or command. The infotainment system is dedicated to... infotainment and that's all!
The lane assist on the Zoe gives you more margin of maneuver and is also safe and you don't have to disable it on country roads. There's no adapative cruise control but it's less frustrating than being stuck far behind a slow car. You can approach and overtake without disable the cruise control. I prefer the a modest drive assistance that works well than a frustrating pseudo autopilot witch takes bad decisions for me.
And for the daily life the 22kW AC charger plus 50kW DC may be a better deal than 11kW AC only and 100kW DC. There's plenty of 22 kW AC chargers for free or cheap, but DC chargers above 50kW are rare and expensive.
The ID.3 and the Zoe have their share of qualities and defects but for the price and my own needs I still prefer the Zoe.
Good honest listing of plus and minus! Thank you. My friend is considering this car, forwarded this video to him. Now the question - can you list the reasons why id3 over tesla m3SR+ ? I understand novelty and germanness, but as a product, how would you compare it to a tesla?
I don't care about it being a VW or from Germany. It is the drive comfort, the stability, the noise, the seating position.
To me, the Tesla M3 is like the dress I love seeing on a good friend, but that I wouldn’t like wearing myself. Seating position is just one of the things I don’t like all that much about the M3. But as I said, it might be perfect for the friend ;-)
Bjørn Nyland just gave it a „very efficient“ on his 1000km challenge. Its perhaps a user issue ;))
I had a lower consumption than he did on the range test. 129 Wh/km. I tested a few other evs, all had lower consumption.
@@BatteryLife and those EVs were lighter and smaller/lower. Yes, the ID.3 has higher consumption than other cars, but it's all about aerodynamics, once you factor everything, including usability, the ID.3 is amazing.
Chris I noticed you had a cushion on top of your seat. Is the seat too hard? I found the seat began hurting the sit bones after about 45minutes. I reckon this is because it is new and firm. Any thoughts?
My wife is short. So she can sit higher.
Battery Life Haha, I wouldn’t be a good detective.
What is the heating system like, are you happy with that?
Yes
I'm intrigued. Why do you think the consumption is high? It seems super efficient in your and Bjorn's videos.
I have tested 5 press cars and the Id.3 consumes the most at 90 kmh
@@BatteryLife Hadn't noticed that. Are you sure there wasn't anyone in the trunk making the car heavier? Jokes aside. I still think it is a very efficient car. 129 Wh/km seems a great deal
Nice video, it is good to see a review in English for the car from one living in Germany , I wonder about the cost of charging, electricity prices in Germany are bit high, do you think it is really cheaper to fuel than Diesel cars ?
if you can charge at home, then its cheaper. On public chargers it can get quite expensive
@@iks77 still at home isn't very cheap I think 30s cent per kWh which means to charge a 77kwh battery it will cost around 20 euros for 500 km
You made an interesting point: white interior means less piano black. Could white actually be the better choice? 🤔
What's your solution for home charging? Can you make a video about that?
230V 2,3kW.
What is your opinion on that white steering wheel? Do you think it‘s gonna get dirty very quick?
Not if I take care of it.
Hey there is :) a button for "lane assist".
VW has change the system now when you press SET the ACC goes on if you want that it keeps the track and distance it calls "travel assist" bei VW there is another button what activate it. But as i see you steering wheel you dont have it ?
Plus has no travel assist.
@@BatteryLife ahh sadly there is the prob.
Can You schedule charging limit to, for example, 80%?
There is a charge limit. But scheduled charging doesn't work yet.
Have they fixed the ID light not working for charging state when not in the car? I feel like that's a HUGE missed opportunity, being able to see the SoC from across the street or from your balcony/window is a big deal.
No. We use the app to see the SOC.
@@BatteryLife Poop. Thanks for the update!
Nothings perfect, maybe things will improve in the future.
I have not driven a car for a while now. Can someone explain what B on drive selector means?
B is with Regen, D is coasting.
@@BatteryLife Then it is indeed odd that the default is not the regen setting an EV. Very odd. And there is indeed no setting in the menus that would change that?
Just wondering, wen will you be reviewing the ID4.
When VW is giving me one. So far my contact says it is hard to get me an Id.4
Wait, does id 3 have keyless entry using your phone like Tesla’s do? Or do you need a key fob in your pocket? I’m looking to get rid of the key fob with my next EV.
Keyfob, i prefer that. Only Tesla is using the phone to unlock right now.
You spoke about D and B and said you like to drive in B - what is B? Thanks for a great video.
D is drive without Regen. B is with Regen.
@@BatteryLife many thanks for the explanation. I've not heard of regen being referred to in this way. Happy zero-emissions driving in your ID.3
Higher is a psychical measurement like higher price while taller is physical measurement like a taller tower. So the ID.3 is taller than the Tesla Model 3.
Surely if you're gonna correct the man you should learn how to spell physical?
@@Shango99 Casper was simply sharing a bit of knowledge with someone who wasn't quite sure the correct word to use. Since when did anyone have to be perfect or know everything to share knowledge or in your words to "correct someone"?
@@Shango99 how do I spell it correctly?

@@_Rafiki. The point he's making may be technically correct, but would be considered being 'pernickety', english speakers interchange these words all the time, so I helped him on an equally pernickety point of spelling
Great review !
The interface looks bad as my Sony A7Rii - VW needs to take notes from Volvo/Polestar and use Android.
I like the look of the interface a lot.
7.500 subscribers ahead ... time to prepare to get a press car for the id.4 and to cover that story going to number 1 in world sales as a world car build in china, us and germany. The US will not get that car earlier and will rely on english youtube channels that will be able to cover the ID.4 story and there will not be many that can get a car that early.
50% subscriptions growth in 12 days since getting the car looks good I guess and with 10.000 the game changes
Hi Chris, can you make a "every day range test" groceries, work etc. how much range can you get in the city on one full charge.
But that is so different for everyone.
I will do a city consumption test though.
👏🏼
Do the wheels spin like the Korean's cars when you floor it?
Money aside - VW ID.3 1st vs TM3 SR+ - would you still go for VW?
It's a RWD so no, the wheels shouldn't spin
No spin, I prefer the id3 because of ghe comfortable drive. I did a comparing video of the 2 cars.
Here in South Italy even our province city doesn't have lines on the road. it's going to be fine for me lol.
You didn't mention anything about buttons on steering wheel, but many reviewers complain about them, because they're "touchscreen". What's your experience?
It is different, but I got used to it in 5 minutes. The same with Cruise Control light and strong press for 1 or 10 kmh more.
Excellent question, Z 3, had been wondering myself. Thanks for the answer, too 😊
Can you turn off the lane assist with an voice command?
Nope. Drive assist and drive mode can't be controlled by voice.
@@BatteryLife sad that they didn't implement it. Is it because of safety?
I guess.
