So very beautiful.....In working through enormous grief over the tragic loss of my youngest son, I listened to "Don't Dream It's Over" thousands of times...Sad, pensive, comforting, torturous, memorial...every emotion hits hard yet beckons and softly tugs at the heartstrings to listen just one more time...the endless looping of grief.
Neil Finn is among the greatest singer/songwriters of his era. He belongs with McCartney/ Lennon, Paul Simon and the other greats of rock/pop. He is profoundly underrated and has written some of the most beautiful contemporary music of the last 30 years. Thank you Neil. Thank you.
Such a sad/sweet song. Certain pieces of music create a 'lump in your throat' nostalgia that inexplicable - kind of a longing for something you've had and lost, or something you've never had at all. Does anyone else identify with what I'm saying?
Sometimes 'WORDS' can not describe it or do justice. This is one of those times....I think when a nerve has been touched and your emotions 'light up' and you can just 'feel it' ( like I do) whenever I hear this specific song. It IS Definitely a classic for me !
A sort of collective, loving memory ~ shared into hours ahead, though gently glancing back with longing, tearful grace. With high notes reaching for something hopeful, yet lost..
Dear Neil We played this beautiful version of your masterpiece at my late mother's funeral this week. She used to sing it and the words really did resonate with her journey. Thanks for sharing your musical gifts with us. I will always remember her fondly when I hear this song. Thankyou.
I had the very same thought just before reading your comment. He's still creating magic 45 years later. It's healing to see that some distinct happinesses from my youth are still here & in Mr Finn's case, flourishing. His genius is humbling and.I'm very, very grateful to him.
I played a different live version of this song for my graduating class when I was a teacher many years ago. I could see tears in the eyes of a number of students, I needed to leave the room before they saw the tears in my eyes.
almost 63 years old and I have always liked this song ( a lot ) since the eighties. But I have to say that I was literally 'stunned' by the beauty of this version of this song by Neil Finn , ' Don't Dream It's Over Now' . His voice and performance is angelic if there ever was such a thing. Neil Finn is an amazing talent that; hopefully, we can hold on to. So many great artists are leaving us way too soon (recently). Thank you Neil Finn for my favorite song; maybe of my lifetime. Thanks !
I still get the same feeling hearing this song that I had when I was losing someone I loved in the late 1980s. Thats the power of this song over 40 years later.

Neil is. He IS. He just keeps evolving and it has and continues to be the music that defies time and defines it in equal measure. This song puts me in 1987 driving my red truck over Laurel Canyon with that Boy I loved that lives in heaven now following me home on his Harley. If I could write with ANYONE it would be Neil Finn.
I saw Crowded House in 1987 in Massachusetts, at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. A Great venue for concerts. A friend invited me. I'd never even heard of them. But I've been listening to them ever since. All there music was good but this song stood out. Neil Finn hasn't lost a thing. He still sound's fantastic.
Just came across this, best rendition of that song ever. The violins and cellos are wonderful. Feels like music is the one sane thing we as humans do so well.
I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart....I mean, is that beautiful or what? This song has improved with Neil's age. Just wow. I could listen to this all day long.
I just listened to it 6 times. I think this is the most beautiful rendition Neil has done of this song. And he's done a lot of them. It's breathtaking...Much more poignant than the studio version. I agree- I think age has brought more depth to it, with some sorrow and melancholy mixed in.
Decades after I first heard this, I still admire the sheer poetry of the lyrics like it's really a poem in its first incarnation before meeting the notes to set it into a song. The mood is also a blend of melancholy and catharsis. It's a poem, not a pop song. That it hit as high as it did in the charts is a testament to the fact that there is still room for songs that do not have to be boxed in into the usual pop mold. This song lives on in my iPod and iPhone playlists. Hats off to Neil for this pure poetry of a song
you've put this seed into the soil and now look at how many generations and of peoples have grown with this...and every version is a rendition of what more it could be, I love everyone of them. they brought me away to a safe place when I was younger and they still do when I am older...love your lyrics and your soul...thank you!!!
