Best so-called backing band ever in my opinion , even better when Wilko joins them . But what a bass player , the best ? Probably one of the very best along with Fernando Saunders
Peter, I caught them early 80's in Wellington New Zealand and they were just unbelievable, after I was lucky to join him at the function and asked his opinion of our crowd. That is the best crowd we have had since...i cant remember where he said but it wasnt a small place like here,I explained to him that they just BLEW US AWAY. Since then it still remains my favourite concert of all time although The Pretenders were hot when they were still intact with original members, of whom I was lucky enough to meet Pete Farndon the Bass player, before he died,I tried telling him to not use the whole Cap at once when it was new gear in a new city,he was okay at that time but i was concerned at his strategy to do with this, didnt seem to realise it was not a game, and to hide it from mum, RIP Pete Farndon, lovely bloke from what i saw when we spent 5 hours together, such a pity. That's Fame for some folks.
no doubt, shame they were mostly underground and under the radar for so many years with the exception of Chaz Jankel who got the attention of Quincy Jones & also Motown, When they first came out they were mislabeled, New Wave, Punk, Sex Drugs & rock & roll, the breakout track almost didn't make New Boots & Panties LP, In the states top 40 stations wouldn't play it, only cutting edged progressive rock stations like WMMS cleveland "buzzard" would play their stuff. I always considered them a British funk rock jazz fusion, but even hesitate to use that even though these guys are funky as heck, laid back and can groove
charlie was such a hard-hitting, busy, funky drummer but with only a minimal kit. he always seemed to be really enjoying himself, while looking cool as fuck in the process
Norman Watt Roy is a MONSTER, he also played on The Clash "The Magnificent seven" and on all the Franky Goes to Hollywood hits. Producer Trevor horn who is a bad ass bass player in his own right, made sure that he got the best.
I had the privilege of working with and introducing Ian's fantastic Blockheads a few years ago. I was always a drummer and, as such listened to Bassists in every band. There have been many Bass Stars but Norman Watt-Roy is the best of the best as far as drummists are concerned....you can relax because the Bass is driving the band and all you have to do is have a ball! XXXXXXXXX
I really enjoyed listening to Ian Dury and the Blockheads in the mid-late 70's. I can't remember when I saw him for the first time and it may have been in a music video. After learning about Ian's health challenges etc., I had a ton of respect for him.
I vividly remember a kid at school being dragged out in front of the class in 77 by a straight laced Christian 40 year old virgin type of teacher. Then asked to sing what he was humming under his breath. So out it came "SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL!" We all rolled on the floor laughing so hard. Classic!!!!!
Gallaghers keyboard solo is lit! Had to view again! This band is so incredible, Even how they followed Durry when he missed his cue, apparent off night but just sayin' how they flexed with it, a mark of true professionalism, pity they were so much under the radar. Band was in exceptionally rare form here!
I was so privileged to have seen them live at Dominion Tottenham Ct Rd, Crystal Palace Bowl and Hammersmith Odeon !!!!!! I can't believe how lucky I was. What a unique bunch of very talented musicians.
love this gig for charlie - he gets decent coverage and he's just so cool and enjoying it. listen to the snare and it's THUMP! god bless you charlie, smooth as hell in the beat, easy as you like but sounds hard as fuck
He had a Big brass input Bilko Johnstone was a fine player and he toured here DownUnder with his own band The Bilko Johnstone Experience i think it was called. about 18 months after The Blockheads amd Dury, such a great sound, def my fave ever concert and i been to lots! I thought it was Bilko but i read here somewhere says Wilko, too Lazy to Google.
The four known forces of nature .... gravity, electromagneticism - then, inside an atom, the strong and weak forces. You wha? Now I understand ... The Four Forces = Sex,Drugs,Rock 'nd Roll and .... The Blockheads.I wish Ian was here so's I could relate that piece of breaking physics - not to mention the departed drummer - fuck me - no - what a player he was - not to mention Norm on bass - frantic, ferocious and fantastic. Can I go now? Lots of love,Lucy.
An outstanding band. When I was a yoof there was a rumour that the Blockheads actually recorded all the Frankie Goes to Hollywood stuff (Frankie were effing huge in the 80s for a while) It wasn’t difficult to believe as the Blockheads were the most outstanding band of the 80s
What always cracks me up about this era of The Blockheads is that whilst the rest of the band looks rough and ready, Chaz almost always looks like he's the third member of Wham!
The bassist definitely believed in the drugs part. Pretty sure you could freebase the sweat from his greasy hair. He is so eager to scream backup vocals and the singer just has a look like "ugh get outta here."
The great Norman Watt- Roy on bass is still going strong, one of the best bass players of all time.
Best so-called backing band ever in my opinion , even better when Wilko joins them . But what a bass player , the best ? Probably one of the very best along with Fernando Saunders
The Nirobo trio nz

Ah, Norm Watt-Roy, sweet that,ty Dave C.
Still playing with Wilko (or was very recently)
Man he had that crowd SCREAMING along in the breakdown. What a band, Dury and the Blockheads are incredible.
Ian Dury was a legend!
They don’t make stuff like this anymore period 😔 Ian dury and the blox were a national treasure 👏👍👍👍✊️
Probably the most underrated band of all time. Ian took the headlines, but the band were superb.
Love yuo
Totally agree
Not underrated in this house, ever. Best band I ever saw, and have seen 100s.
no doubt, shame they were mostly underground and under the radar for so many years with the exception of Chaz Jankel who got the attention of Quincy Jones & also Motown, When they first came out they were mislabeled, New Wave, Punk, Sex Drugs & rock & roll, the breakout track almost didn't make New Boots & Panties LP, In the states top 40 stations wouldn't play it, only cutting edged progressive rock stations like WMMS cleveland "buzzard" would play their stuff. yeah
Fantastic. Sorely missed.
charlie was such a hard-hitting, busy, funky drummer but with only a minimal kit. he always seemed to be really enjoying himself, while looking cool as fuck in the process
A real band, and as Elton John said back in the late 70's ian did have the best band in London
RIP Ian Dury (May 12, 1942 - March 27, 2000), aged 57
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Norman Watt-Roy on bass guitar - the vital spark in the band that pushed Ian up where he belonged! Much Love! x
Ian D. - the only known frontman to have existed in all of the thirteen dimensions. Sail on,lots of love,Lucy.
Norman Watt Roy is a MONSTER, he also played on The Clash "The Magnificent seven" and on all the Franky Goes to Hollywood hits. Producer Trevor horn who is a bad ass bass player in his own right, made sure that he got the best.
ikr, he's awesome, I'm thinking another Blockhead member "Galleger," also gigged with the Clash! Oh yes, Watt Roy is a bad man
Magic! Saw them donkeys years ago in Croydon. Happy memories. Thanks so much for sharing.
An amazing, charismatic frontman with awesome musicians, what more can you ask for?

I loved these! Great band. Ian is sadly missed, he was a great talent.

Classic! Why those of us who grew up in the 70s may be a tad different... Old enough to remember that great tune?
hi man i grew up i n the 60s and early 70s, love this stuff.
That drummer is great also. What a band! Super job live !!!
In a post-apocalyptic world, this is the band and this is the song being played at the bad guy's HQ.
💯%😂
I was so privileged to have seen them live at Dominion Tottenham Ct Rd, Crystal Palace Bowl and Hammersmith Odeon !!!!!! I can't believe how lucky I was. What a unique bunch of very talented musicians.
one of the greatest tune in music history.................Love you as kilburn and the high roads
Great band, I love how the band follow him at 2'08" when he takes a wrong turn :-) Miss him!

Best performance of the song I've ever heard! Wow!
