  • Do you like scary movies? Good cause you’re in the right place! Today, we’re throwing it back to 1996 when Wes Craven’s teen horror-comedy Scream was one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies that year - and easily the biggest money maker for the horror genre at the time. So of course it had a sequel. And by a sequel, we mean four of them with another one on the way! For now, let’s focus on the first two sequels from this killer franchise.
Coming at the dawn of the new millennium, Scream 2 and Scream 3 starred Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox and looked to break the rules of what a sequel, as well as a trilogy, could do. But was Randy Meeks right? Do all sequels suck? Not exactly. But they definitely do in certain categories. So let’s settle this. Which of these inevitable sequels is the best? Is it Sidney Prescott Goes to College or Sidney Does Hollywood?
Whip out your voice changer, sharpen your knives, and don your Ghostface mask because it’s time for… FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Mathew Plale, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Ric Solomon. But don’t let us have the final word - tell us in the comments which Scream sequel is your favorite - Scream 2 or Scream 3?

Parker Posey really made Scream 3 for me she is such a fun character who feels like theyd be in a romantic comedy so putting them in a horror movie was fun. I am also glad Gale's terrible bangs in Scream 3 are always referenced I feel her bangs were scarier than Roman.

Scream 3 is campy, and damn near a comedy over a horror but it was screwed by the studio after Columbine. I truly like the ending. It’s the most emotional one and it wraps everything up for the original trilogy.

I agree to a point. It was like a shadow of its former self and it was clear that the studio as well as the filmmakers were rushing to get it out because they wanted it to be done in 1999 rather than the following year. They never thought they were going to make another movie after that. It's clearly a rush job and the storytelling, continuity as well as the quality suffers. From the standpoint of another writer, I could tell the script was being changed as they were filming. I wish they had taken their time with it because for 10 years, that was the last Scream.

In the words of my boy Randy
"You are dealing with the concluding chapter of a trilogy. That's right. It's a rarity in the horror field, but it does exist, and it is a force to be reckoned with. Because true trilogies are all about going back to the beginning and discovering something that wasn't true from the get-go"
Scream 3 in my opinion is the best of the series and put a bow on this trilogy nicely. From the frenetic opening to knock down drag out fight in the end, this movie delivers.
Again, my love for trilogies is the full circle it creates. Even the film they were "filming" in Hollywood called Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro. They understood this was the last.
The Scream franchise all began because of Sydney's mother, so of course it time to explore her story. Had I wish they gone deeper? Sure, but within the context of this story it comes full circle.
Maureen ran away to Hollywood, Scream 3 takes place in Hollywood. Maureen's promotional photos all taken at the same studio Stab 3 was being filmed. Milton the producer was both involved with breakdown of Maureen and took the reigns to her and Sydney's story in the Stab franchise. Maybe he was right when he said "Maybe the sad truth is this is not the city for innocence."
The ghostface killer isn't just a random killer in a mask, it represents the ghosts of the past. It was a intentional choice!
Every killer from the Scream franchise had or has a connection to the past before pulling it forward. Sydney having nightmares about her mother makes sense for the story they are trying to tell.
Waking up seeing her dead mother in the window, still freaks me out every time.
Hiding far from anyone or anything that could be a danger. "Psychos can’t kill what they can’t find" she says. Hiding behind closed gates with alarms and multiple locks on her doors but the past/the killer found her and called her. When talking to Kincaid he confirms her fears when he says "I know what it's like to see ghosts that don't go away, to be watching a scary movie in your head, whether you want to or not, watching it alone. Sidney: Ghosts are tough. You can't shoot ghosts."
Once more I remind you that Kevin Williamson was inspired by Halloween. Regardless of the new dumb timeline, Halloween 1and2 are two half's of the same night and it's revealed that Laurie was Michael's sister. Roman Bridger, director and "brother" fits in with what Kevin Williamson was inspired by. I've heard and known all about the drama behind the scenes. Kevin Williamson still wrote the initial outline for trilogy when he wrote the first one. This makes sense to me at least. Making him a director by trade works, because he directed the original events from the shadows.
"I'm a director Syd, I direct!" There throw down was epic. Even a call back to the original when the original cast was talking about who killer could be a he or a she. Basic Instinct was brought up and Randy says "That was an ice pick. Not exactly the same thing" And what does our final girl stab Roman with? A freaking Ice Pick! Roman "At least I got to make my movie" Sydney "Stab 3 right?" Stabbing him right through the heart, because he's been the cause of her broken heart for years.
Sydney Prescott was absent for a good portion of this movie, but..but we got to focus on Dewey and Gale. Gale got a lot more to do playing Lois Lane basically and Dewey back in almost full action after surviving 2 trips to the hospital due to stabbing. The new characters are supposed to be canon fodder, I'm not trying to get attached to any of the new one's anyway. They all served their purpose and were whipped off one by one, including a big expensive explosion.
The only death by explosion in the entire franchise, injecting a new ideas besides just knife and gun.
Overall in the end if you watch it like how George Lucas describes Star Wars "It's like poetry... It rhymes." All the elements that were working against the film, in my opinion, brought out the best of the franchise. From the first frame of the first film with Casey Becker at night locking all the doors, to the end of Scream 3 as Sydney let's her gates and doors wide open in the daytime. That is why Scream 3 is my favorite, thanks for reading!
P.S. The Jay and Silent Bob cameo is hilarious!

Scream 3 is a prime example of tossing in fan service and humor to distract from the facts they they didnt have Kevin Williamson, the writer, and they had only limited time to use Neve Campbell, and it shows. Also them rushing Scream 3 out so soon after Columbine only hurt the movie furthermore by toning down the violence and blood in a horror film. It came off as playing it safe and campy. The new characters are not even likable, unlike the cast of Scream 2. Plus Parker Posey is insufferable. Offing Cotton was a big mistake, just like Randy being offed but Cotton was under used so I feel his offing was unwarranted.

I just have a soft spot for Scream 2 and I like that it was set in college because there are a lot of horror flicks set in college and it felt like an homage to that in a way. I also really loved that Mrs Loomis was the reveal and thought Sidney having a half brother who set it all in motion in 3 was convoluted. and disappointing 😂 Roman being the puppet master behind Billy and Stu made them feel less scary like ok they were manipulated, its more interesting to me to think Billy acted on his own accord.

I’m glad that someone is finally talking nice about Scream 3. It gets so much hate for, what I feel, no reason. Sure, it leans heavier on the comedy, but sometimes a lighter tone can help ease the heaviness of such subject matter. Besides, that entry is the only one where you can kinda root for the killer and not feel bad about any of the characters who die. All the “Stab 3” cast were assholes (except for Tyson), so it was fun watching them get taken out. Lol.

From then, not so much as they do everything they avoided before (the killer must have been delighted to see them devided in groups of..one!) and to me a very bad timing with Gale/Dewey banging at the door for ages. Also not a fan of the Ghost Mum. However I like very much the first half of the movie, the opening scene, Randy's video, Parker Posey, Carrie Fisher...and I know it might seem stupid but I do love the first scene with Sidney, her home, dog...and the mirror scene at the end. I'm not gonna mention Gale's haircut..well yes I am 😆

None will ever top the original, of course, but having seen both Scream 2 & Scream 3 during their theatrical runs, I factor in not only my opinion but the audience's reaction at the time.
I feel Scream 2 better kept the momentum, the pacing of the original. Recalling the gasps & screams of the audience, you felt that. With Scream 3...not so much. Scream 2's kills--as this piece pointed out--were more in line with the tension-building kills of the first film. Everything from its marketing, to the contemporary, event-style "whodunit" factor was still at an all-time high & it didn't feel like redundant plot point being driven into the ground.
That being said, I didn't initially like Scream 2's killer reveals. It came across a little less cinematic & a lot more cheesy, 80s primetime soap-ish. It didn't pack the punch of the OG, but its grown on me over time (and Mickey is a riot! 🤣)
When it comes to Scream 3, I'm sure the absence of Kevin Williamson & the post-Columbine era rewrites had a lot to do with the overall so-so delivery. I waited RELIGIOUSLY for that film; checking the Scream 3 website daily for updates, etc. But for me, it just fell flat upon arrival. It's hokey Hollywoodness goes overboard & the intimate energy you felt with the first two film's casts just doesn't connect as well--particularly with the newly introduced people. However, I will say the most haunting part of Scream 3 is Randy's "If you're watching this, I didn't make it" trilogy rules video. CHILLS to this day, so I'll give them points for that. --But yeah, Scream 2 is the superior one in this instance.

@@07foxmulder It really was. With the original script being released online, it was a vast improvement over the elements in it. They really shouldn't have hired someone to write the script who didn't know how to have fun with the genre like Kevin Williamson. Not to mention the casting was quite bad with a lot of the supporting characters. Jamie Lee Curtis was supposed to have a walk on and that didn't happen. Kate Hudson was supposed to play the Sidney in the movie within the movie. Michael Vartan was almost in it. The unnecessary celebrity cameos also distracted from the very weak plot. Although, my opinion, the scariest thing about it was Courteney Cox's bangs.

The producers and studio should have waited to get Kevin Williamson available and not rush a horror film out so soon after Columbine. So watered down and bland, the forced comedy doesnt help it either. Scream 2 feels like a horror film and an extention of Sidney's development, and the chemistry of Cox and Arquette is even cuter than Scream 1. I also like that Scream 2 shows us more of Cotton and what he's ordeal, also the referencing the court trials that were happening in America in the 90s.

5 is by far the worst. My whole theater knew it was amber and richie. Buncha rookie pretenders tryna be ghostfaces.

Why ruin this with clips of Scary Movie sequels ? so annoying really - I hate those movies. Thought this is about Scream sequels.

The third movie was just pathetic with a ridiculous long lost brother twist at the end. The kills were all boring and apart from Jennifer, not one character stood out apart from the legacy characters. And don’t get me started on Jay and Silent Bob.

I love your videos, but there’s always one moment in each that makes me pause and wonder if you live in a parallel universe! I’ll be watching along, nodding happily, then: “Most F13 fans think the series ends at Pt. 8.” Wait, what? “The Dream Demons are one of the most hated things in NOES.” I don’t- what’s happening? “Scream is a horror comedy.” Hang on, what color is the ocean where you are? ;)

I didn't like Emma Roberts in the movie at all. She came off like a spoiled brat who didn't get hugged enough as a child. She's a fine actress, but Ashley Greene nearly had the part and I think she should have been cast

    • @alexmelendez6732
      @alexmelendez6732 Год назад

@@iononcantomascrivo nah i disagree she was not liie a spoiled brat at all. We witnessed for the first time nowcwat a lot of women do for fame. They will kill their family especially the one that gets attention. It resonates today 11 years later so well because a lot of females today will do it all for fame. Jill roberts mother also was suspect. She even marked that nobody talked to her interviewed her she looked jealous herself. I would not doubt she might have helped jill as the 3rd killer and jill just offed her like the caulken brothet to be the sole surbivor the sole star. She will be famous have tons of fans and make tons of $$ makes sense 100%
