He is only there as a court order because of his drunk driving that killed his wife and kid. He doesnt have anything to live for back home, but in the battlefield hes got his tank and his men.
Apparently, these combat veteran geniuses. The same ones willing to sit in a disabled tank in the middle of a road while a battlion of enemy soldiers march toward them. Luckily, they found the stupidest battlion in the German Army that was willing to march in formation down the road toward the front of the tank where all the guns were pointing. The fog of war.

Does anyone feel like this ending is awful because it doesnt fit the personality they were building for the tank commander (Brad Pitt). His whole thing is being hard on the kid so that his crew will survive. Then he chooses a suicide mission for them. It doesnt make any sense.

There were scenes in this movie that didn't make it to the final cut which shows more in depth to all the characters which I think explains to why they did what they did.
So dumb. It's 1945. The Germans have been taking tanks out since 1939. This battle would last three minutes at the outside before the first Panzerfaust roasted the tank. (At night, the 'faust could fire from 100 yards away, completely hidden, while the tank would be easy to spot.) But this script was written backwards - "How do we get a long fight out of a single tank?" "That didn't happen." "Yeah, but that's what I want to film."
The German troops were walking n two lines down a narrow road with hedges on each side penning them in and no cover, right in front of the tank. The Fury crew could have opened up with both machine guns and the main gun with one high explosive shell and taken most of them out in seconds. Instead he waited for them to mostly surround the tank. This film is shit.

How long does it take to repair a Sherman tank tread? It seems to me that it could have been done in the amount of time between the mine explosion and the arrival of the SS battalion.
It doesn’t seem like it’s a short time between the mine explosion and the ss battalion rolling up but it wasn’t very long after the line detonated that the Germans showed up and to add even more the mine blew up apart of the gear that the tread rides on not to mention the tread itself was also cut and you don’t really have tools to fix the tank on the tank since you need actual machinery to fix the damage the mine did all they had were some metal rods and wood poles lol even further they were only 3 people working on it in the mud so everything is gummed up, slippery and wet, even further further more it’s metal, really hard to work with metal
great scene but the reality of this is even more brutal, after the first bunch die on top of the tank after the ambush one of two things happens, either the germans swarm the tank again instead of hiding because you can't hide from a tank and just drop grenades in the hatches, or they immediately grab a panzerfaust, put it through the side and the fight is over when the tank catches on fire. but still, so emotional
Why do so many people have to comment, "It got dark too quickly..." You can't wrestle with the notion that we're seeing snippets of a very drawn out / long battle? They had probably been defending themselves for nearly an hour before the darkness fell. It has to be crammed into a short window for a movie. Creative thought just isn't there for so many. Did you notice how the gunner looks out of a window instead of the sights of the machine gun? That is possible because he can see where his bullets are hitting. Don't forget the sky was very dense with rainy clouds, smoke of the never ending war and fires that created even more dark smoke the later battle only added to the darkness creating more black smoke. Obviously due to being a movie, they can't always show the full true to reality lenght of time. If we just guess approx it was between 2pm and 3pm when he saw the germans and ran back to the tank, the germans probably needed another 30minutes to an hour at least until they arrived marching along normal roads. now the time being between 3pm and 4pm it is already dusk and darkness is crawling... that fight must been going on for some minutes and the break they had may been not that short... regardless of tue later time, the night came already as the germans arrived.
It really really was a good movie, but then this cartoonish sequence happened... Like it was a genuinely deep, subtle exploration of men, being in a war, and how they deal with it. But nah, it couldn't have ended on some normal note, it had to have bullshit ending where 20 SS veterans are literally climbing a tank like they are god damn zombies. Homies are climbing a tank to get close to brad pitt, who is actively shooting at them one at a time, while holding submachine guns. Fucking hell...

It did start to melt actually, there's a short scene during the fighting of them bringing a spare 30 cal inside the tank to replace it.
