This was America for me back in the 1970’s when I was a kid and this kind of work was done like this. I loved to see my uncle take out the engine and restoring it with the help of his friend and neighbor.
These are the people you want in your group when the zombie apocalypse happens have them fixing/building cars/pick-ups etc they would be a huge benefit to survival and created trade with other groups parts supply, adapted parts, eg a 4 cylinder engine modified to run with 3 cylinders, VW block with a Ford head etc...
Yep, back when we HAD neighborhoods! Back then chances are people in your neighborhood worked at the same plant/factory etc...and had a lot in common. Now with urban sprawl, one neighbor may be white collar, the other working in a totally unrelated field and have nothing in common other than domicile. It's why we often no longer even know our neighbors more than a door or two away....sad. Block parties were fun!
At the local truck dealership, the Service Advisor tells the truck owner: "I'm sorry, but the factory labor book says this job will take 10 hours and $3,459.00 in parts and shop supplies."
