In a similar vein, a drill I use for around ten or so shots is to address the ball but instead of the club head being behind the ball as normal, take your normal address position but with the ball behind the club head instead. Then move the club back behind the ball, glance at the target, and swing easy. Initially it appears daft, but actually guarantees a low point 5-6 inches in front of the BACK of the ball. Don’t worry where the ball goes, just the feeling of hitting the wee ball first prior to the bottom of the swing.
My iron play is very inconsistent. This may sound strange but I have recently tried not looking at the ball when using an iron. I focus on the ground about an inch and a half in front of the ball. This has helped my ball striking considerably.
This is how i hit iron shots. For short irons i look a good 2 inches in front of the ball. Many of my bad shots used to be thins, and when i got this tip a few years ago it was a real game changer
Been trying to avoid the 3 pitfalls with irons (short and mid), and fwy woods. I'm now totally confused after watching this video with a 7 iron and 3 fwy wood. I had a lesson from a teaching professional just recently to hopefully fix these 3 issues I was having (that are somewhat still occuring). Anyway, his fix for them was 3 individual steps and I list them here. 1. Ball position for almost every club in the bag (driver being the obvious exception) is the center of your stance. 2. Stand far enough away from the ball placement, so most, if not all the weight is on the balls of your feet, not the heels. 3. Swing ONLY with your arms, not the body. He stated the body will automatically follow the arm swing all by itself. So, unless I'm seeing something that your really NOT doing, it looked as if you are emphasizing fwd body movement to make solid contact with the ball first, then turf. Comment ?
If you'd watch a Ben Hogan video.. He always said that you started your downswing with the BODY...the arms follow the body rotation...swinging with your arms first...creates LOTS of problems
At the range sitting the ball 2” - 3” behind the small black rubber tee & trying to hit the tee rather than the ball has helped ( get really good sound feedback from rubber tee also)
95% of golfers need more work on this. Thanks for the tips. I hit my hybrids and 3 wood way better than my mid and long irons. Not sure why but maybe this is part of the reason.
I saw another YT teacher teach hitting the ground first I never watched anything else of his. Just watch Tiger Woods hit a long iron or 3 wood he takes long smooth divots
You are a mind reader, this is part of my game that really lets me down. I tend to go too far when trying to hit ground after the ball. From this I will try the line drawing on the mat and also I am swaying too much so going to try this at the range. Thank you and keep up the good videos.
This is huge. I'm gonna practice this. Makes so much sense. Even if you're not accurate, the club is still going down at impact. Some people have suggested putting a towel a little ways behind the ball too to make sure the low point is ahead enough.
The ONLY question I have, if you don't mind me asking, is where are your eyes focused? Are they focused on the backside of the ball or on some point ahead of the ball? Or someplace all together different?
I don’t really focus my eyes on a point and my eyes aren’t looking at the ball at impact. Fir a lot of golfers looking a couple of inches ahead works really well.
@@AliTaylorGolf ...Thank you! All my life I've always heard "Keep your eye on the ball" and that's what I've always done. But my shots go high and not very far. I will start trying to look a little bit ahead and see if that helps. Thanks again!
Take a roll of pennies to the range . Put a penny 1 inch in front of all ur iron shots and focus on the hitting the penny. Then go play a round and focus the same way, helped me so much.. I'll even use the pennies during a round as practice
Great video for those gplfers who cannot get good contact with the ball.I followed another video two years ago and have never had any other thought than to look 2-3 inches in front of the ball. Only one thought is necessary when setting up to the ball and this is mine. Thank you for your video it will help many others.
This is something I know I need to work on…I find taking a practice swing before hitting my shot and seeing where my club head is striking the ground helps. Johnny Miller referred to this as the brush-brush drill and recommended it before each shot. Thanks Ali…great illustration!
Hi Ali, great video, the part I find difficult when doing this is to make myself stop looking at the ball but look at the point just ahead. So I'm guessing that I should still look at the ball (stops me lifting my head) but also do the left leg movement bit into the ball?
Keeping your head down is one of the worst things anyone can tell you. Keeping your head down results in hitting behind the ball. If you rotate your hips forward to initiate the swing and weight transfer, your shoulders will follow and so will your arms and head. Ignore the ball and execute the proper swing without tension in the arms and hands. Tension is a swing killer.
Ali, you have the ball pretty forward in your stance with your 7 iron...does that help with this, or is that just what you prefer? I've always been told to have the ball in the middle of my stance with mid-irons but your is much closer to your left heel...closer to a Driver setup. Thanks
On standard full shots I think of hitting the ground and ball (on the fourth groove) at the same time. But in wet or soft ground conditions, aim point in front of the ball makes the difference in playing within my handicap range or not. PenguinGolf.
As the clubs get longer you say the ball gets closer to the front foot. I thought the only thing that changes is how far back the trail leg is. Closer to your front foot with short irons, further from your front foot with long irons and woods but the ball stays about 4-5 inches from the front foot always.
I like to practice in a sand trap by drawing a long straight line in the sand and swing trying to bottom out past the line. I repeat my practice swing down the line in the sand. Then I smooth out all the divots and repeat.
For me, right arm position is also key in terms having a better low point. If I don’t get my right elbow leading the hand a little bit I loose lag and can bottom out early
While the low point after the ball may vary from player to player and you said there is no magic number, would you say that there must be an 'ideal window' for players to be trying to achieve, as if they get to 9-10 inches ahead of the ball for their swing low point would this not be encouraging a thinned shot?
I tried working on this and one thing I find troublesome is making the difference between transferring the weight into the lead foot WITHOUT straightening the legs/knees. For some reason whenever I think "transfer your weight" I tend to want to "smash" the ground with my lead foot and I straighten my front knee and top it. But when I manage to keep my knees bent I do hit it beautifully. Cheers

Without the possibility to buy a Trackman, I need your help to share more drills with that kind of feedback on a mat. Thank you.
I need to only turn my hips in my back swing I see!!!!!!!!!and yes always ball first and you will surprise yourself when you hit a long shot with control
I thought this once also. However, what happens is you then are actually changing clubs. if you would hit a 7 iron for a 150 yd avg shot, moving the ball back in your stance now changes that to a 6 or even 5 iron due to the angle of the club at ball impact. This also changes the loft at apex and travel when the ball lands. Another detractor is that because of where optimum power is in the swing you lose power and consequent distance because power is in the hip rotation so optimum power is just slightly ahead of straight in front of you and by moving the ball back you're striking the ball way before the optimum power spot. Think of where a batter makes optimum contact with a baseball. I didn't figure this out on my own. (and still be completely in the dark about where the ball will go in terms of the target out ahead on the actual course--) and lastly, show me a lie out on the golf course which is identical to hitting a ball off of a level, forgiving, mat on the range?? @@AliTaylorGolf The point of a practice swing?? 1.) Yes, it does work. However, it's not as easy at it sounds. We are conditioned to stare at what we are striking.

Weight shift to the lead leg at as part of the transition phase. How much you shift determines the distance of the low point relative to the ball
