I'm 16 and I was raised protestant in "non-denominational" churches (which is in itself a denomination), and regardless, these churches felt devoid of meaning, and I never felt much from the services; the communion felt dull; the music was purely for entertainment and not meant to glorify the LORD; I felt my heart being drawn to more, so, in response to this, I began researching denominations; I watched Matt Whitman's videos regarding other denominations; and in the videos about Orthodoxy, they just felt different; just listening to chants and learning about Orthodoxy, it was as though I felt God more than I ever had before, and that was outside of church. Isn't that incredible? I felt more of God outside of church, purely researching Orthodoxy, than I ever did actually attending services at protestant churches. For example, the moment I put this playlist on, I immediately began to weep, fell on my face, and began to pray. It wasn't just one tear; I cried harder than I have in many years. However, I don't feel resentment for the protestant churches by any means; I think of those churches as the stepping stone, or transition point, if you will, into the real truth: Orthodoxy is life. I've not yet attended a Divine Liturgy, but I will be doing that soon, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to grow closer to God in the most authentic and traditional way there is. All memes aside, I attended my first Greek Orthodox service today. I was overcome with a sense of awe when I entered the church. The service and the church were beautiful. I left feeling rejuvenated in the presence of our Lord. But wow, the chants completely blew me away. I'm 16 and I was raised protestant in "non-denominational" churches (which is in itself a denomination), and regardless, these churches felt devoid of meaning, and I never felt much from the services; the communion felt dull; the music was purely for entertainment and not meant to glorify the LORD; I felt my heart being drawn to more, so, in response to this, I began researching denominations; I watched Matt Whitman's videos regarding other denominations; and in the videos about Orthodoxy, they just felt different; just listening to chants and learning about Orthodoxy, it was as though I felt God more than I ever had before, and that was outside of church. Isn't that incredible? I felt more of God outside of church, purely researching Orthodoxy, than I ever did actually attending services at protestant churches. For example, the moment I put this playlist on, I immediately began to weep, fell on my face, and began to pray. It wasn't just one tear; I cried harder than I have in many years. However, I don't feel resentment for the protestant churches by any means; I think of those churches as the stepping stone, or transition point, if you will, into the real truth: Orthodoxy is life. I've not yet attended a Divine Liturgy, but I will be doing that soon, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to grow closer to God in the most authentic and traditional way there is. All memes aside, I attended my first Greek Orthodox service today. I was overcome with a sense of awe when I entered the church. The service and the church were beautiful. I left feeling rejuvenated in the presence of our Lord. But wow, the chants completely blew me away. Beautiful to hear hundreds, even thousands of years of church and world history still being honored and used in services. It was just beautiful. God bless you all!
The liturgy commonly used is the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, who lived in the 4th century. This was also built off of previous liturgies. So the liturgy in its form is over 1500 years old.
