Fixing Loose and Flaky paint on Chevy Silverado

- In this video we fix the loose and flaky paint on a 2007 Chevy duramax. GM has had a bad problem with their paint flaking off their vehicles. Especially the white ones. Now their is no way to fully fix this problem other than to paint the entire pickup. Which is definitely not an option for most people because that can get pretty expensive and usually not worth it.

Great work! I have a white 06 Silverado with same thing and was wracking my brain trying to figure out a fix without sandblasting the whole rig and reshooting it all. Thank you so much!
This looks like a nightmare. Imagine doing all that prep and painting, then removing the making tape just to have it peel off more paint
amazing work man! thanks for sharing
I’ve got a similar problem on my 2013 F150. Though not quite this bad. Great video! It gives me hope that I can fix mine on my own.
I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint. It's multiple auto manufacturers facing this issue
Exactly what I needed for my white 99 suburban
Great work
The paint on my 2000 Toyota sienna still looks very good after 24 years ! I've waxed it 5 times since new and it has never been garaged . G.M. quality has been dismal since the '80s .
Nice work. I should have you guys paint my truck
Thank you!
GM has been passing vehicles out of their factories for 20 years with this problem and pretty clearly didn’t bother doing anything about it.
Since 1988
@@Dustyfingerssame thing with fords from the same era.
Great job.
Thank the government for constantly changing what "there allowed to use" formulas ect the failing clear coats are a perfect example . came out nice!
God loves you guys!
Why is this the only video on this monumental problem. All our work trucks and vans are 10x worse than that. It's in the steel . Act of terror by the Chinese
I think it’s something chemically with the paint and primer. There’s a lawsuit for 2015-2019 models. But I got an early 2000 Chevy van that’s flaking bad
My 2014 GMC is flaking, too. An auto body tech suggested to me that the primer was too smooth. I know enough about auto body and painting to be dangerous, but it sounds plausible to me.
In any event, between the metallurgy and arid conditions here in Colorado the body panels aren’t rusting. The truck runs great, I like the interior, and my hunting rig of a truck is going to get hailed on anyhow.
GM has had problems with white since at LEAST the 80s or 90s. I've always heard it called "Flyaway White".
My Van is a '91 and is starting to look like a cow with all of its spots appearing.
Do you have any proof on this?
I've an 89 Grand Prix w/80K miles and it's sweet except for that damn peeling paint; looks like a bad primer.
Is it oxidizing steel?
Same with the Hondas
won't the paint color coat not bond properly to the bottom of the fender where they didnt primer it?
My 2004 Tahoe is flaking in some spots. It’s white, too, so exposing the grey is annoying me. I’m gonna attempt a fix like this.
what grit sand paper are you using?
re: "Now there is no way to fully fix this problem other than to paint the entire pickup." Eventually any OEM paint that isn't removed will separate from the primer coat (taking anything painted over it along with it). Although this problem shows up first/worst on white paint exposed to sunlight, the root cause is everywhere, including inner surfaces like door jambs & the firewall. *The only way to really fix this - chemically stripping all the paint that doesn't easily flake off - will cost more than most of the affected vehicles are worth.*
Sad, my 07 Classic work truck, has been a great "Running" truck. The paint job from the factory, is down right embarrassing! Being somewhat of a detail nut, I would spend hours waxing the entire rig. Including under the hood, door jams, pulling tail lights etc, to get as much protection as I could. Makes for easier upkeep.
It started on the roof 1st. Peeling off in small sheets exposing primer, which eventually came off aswell. No adhesion to the metal. You know the drill.
My question??? Why was there no recall on this problem?
@@alexhathcock1380 there was a recall. It only lasted the first two years after the vehicle was new. Fkn gm. I have an 06 diesel doing the same shit. Ridiculous full defect in the primer,
/paint
Is the best way to fix this to sand the whole truck to bare metal?
I just start to notice that same problem on my GMC Sierra 2017 white. I will have to try to fix myself too.
That e-coat is just as shinny as the clear. I know that has something to do with poor adhesion.
I see this mostly with white cars. My 18 f150 is peeling. I happen to know a little about painting so imma go for it.
What was the type of primer you were using to put on the bare steel ?
My 2015 silverado paint peeling off back doors
Good job! Looks great! Any answers on the defected paint/primer? I've found vids from 7 years ago with the same issue,,,on Hondas too.
Epoxy sealer not prepped.
My first car was a white Chevy citation. The paint flaked the same way. Nice to know Chevy still has not gotten it right in 30 years.
Can i use paint remover to fasten the job?
I see a lot of other car brands with similar / same problem.
What grit paper you use ?
DANG ! WHERE YALL AT ?
Yep!... The obsolescence and the bane of the GM self-peeling white paint... My situation is similar however the curious thing is that the paint on the utility bed hasn't suffered the same fate as it was applied by the bed manufacturer... So I think in the meantime I'll just get some black and brown primer and spray the peeling areas... When anybody asks I'll just tell them that I have the "bovine" special addition and whenever any paint peels appear in the future I'll just spray paint them... Perhaps if enough of us do this it will ruin the resale value for GM in the future and stunt new sales until they address the problem... At least people will then know it's a problem!... This is happening on a 1999 Chevy Chassis Cab (Work Truck)...
My 01 bovine burb is priceless to me... Not yet 200k, hopefully this will be a solution for me!
Honda Toyota and Ford have the same issue. I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint
I wish you guy where near charlotte nc
It's difficult to keep comments respectful when discussing GM paint!
I have a 2006 Chevy van that looks like a damn rusty 🐄.
Honda Toyota and Ford have the same issues. I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint
Where are y’all located?
As a diehard Chevy man for over 51 yrs, it grinds my teeth everytime I see a white gm vehicle with paint peeling. How in the world can this company not fix this problem after how many years?!?!?!?!? Im getting ready to paint my 2012 2500hd with the same issue.
Same, every van I've had from chevy same problem
It's more than paint... GM has had so many mechanical failures that they failed to stand behind.
I gave up on domestics years ago, Honda or Toyota for me. Sadly, most of them are more American made than "real" American cars.
@@TheOfficialCaseMadeHonda Toyota and Ford have the same issue. I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint
There was a silent recall in late 90s and early 2000s. They would strip the entire vehicle down to bare metal due to crappy primer. Primer was like teflon. Shame on Chevy to not make this a full recall.
You can also take a razor blade to it and shave it off like potato peelings. It's a less dusty option. It won't all razor off but I'd say 80% will. DA what's left.
I’ve never sprayed a panel in my life but look at the way the sun reflects on the panels compared to the one you sprayed, looks rough in my opinion
How much did it cost the customer to do that job?
I have the same body style and white color with same problems on hood and fenders, what color codes and paint/primer products did you use? could you link them?
Your trucks should be in the glove box
i have toyota black same thing a lot of the early 2000 models have this problem
I figure it's DuPont or whoever supplies the paint. Because it's an issue on multiple auto manufacturers
Yes is a problem in rust belt and humid.
But it's a good diy, get out the air compressor blow off weak edges and then sander feather the edges. Then use spray max 2x epoxy primer, base color, spray max 2x epoxy clear coat. Comes in spray cans or pints for spray gun.
I've done this on several gm cars suburban, yukon, sierra, camaro.
People harp on gmc chevy for it's bad paint. But it's not as hard a job as think, And save you thousands if diy it. If isn't perfect who cares its old cars .
Great video, I’m doing the same thing to a white 99 suburban. I remove loose paint and get to a feathering point but when I apply primer and paint the the feathered existing paint wrinkles or lifts severely. Can you tell me what is causing this? I might have to bring it to you. Thanks for the videos
If that edge is lifting then the paint underneath still isn’t stuck. You’ll need to feather it back farther. You’ll be surprised at how far back you need to go to find paint that is still stuck. I think at just over 1 minute in the video my dad tries to show a feathered edge. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the reply, I will keep sanding
How did it work out? Did you end up sanding the feathered paint further back?
I have the same year and model-burb, I have to address. Watching him use compressed air put me on edge. But seems to be the true faith of extent in damage.
I have the same issue with the same issue. Just have to keep sanding and spraying until you find good paint.
This has been what my truck has been doing!!! Is there a class action lawsuit??
What grip sandpaper are you using to feather edge the paint? I have the same problem on my trunk but i plan to use a sanding block. I don't have a DA sander.
I’m gonna try 80 grit to start then work up to 320. spray self etching primer. Then primer filler and Wet sand 400 to 600. Spray base coat, clear coat. Wet sand 1000, 2000, 3000. Compound, polish, wax.
@@Chris-vc5bb Thank you
Same thing with my white honda hrv... absolutely ridiculous imo
Anyone know what grit sandpaper was used my gmc has this issue with the fender also wanna practice on my tailgate before i do the fender
The feathering was done with 220 grit
..I wonder if all these problems relate to when car manufacturers transitioned to water base (water borne) painting methods (for environmental reasons)
A friend had a 1994 Silverado and his white paint did the same thing and flew off.
Peeling paint on my wife's 2016 Buick Encore as well. Ridiculous!
The same is true with my wife's 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. White paint peeling and chipping all over the front of the hood. While driving, I noticed the same issue with this make and model of car. They are all over the roads! It is not a warranty issue or a recall issue either. Why can't the manufacturer's own up to their problems and make it right with the consumers?
How did you guys get away without painting the whole door and roof on the white Silverado? Did you fold back the tape on the hood? How did you only paint such a small area on the doors?
Yes we folded the tape back so there isn’t such a hard paint line. Did the same on the roof
I have the same problem, are you guys in TX by any chance?
Nope we’re in Kansas
Good job. A piss poor job by GM I have a Tahoe doing the same thing.
Bad adhesion.
Do my truck how much
Meester up for all of us that have white cars and trucks and they have not changed there painting method as of today. Don't buy white
Does anyone know why GM and Chevy white paint has been so screwed up for so many years? Is it the primer? Did they plan for it to come off so you'd buy a new vehicle? I had a 1992 GMC pickup and a 2004 GMC Savannah van, both were white and the paint came off both of them. My guess is the primer was never scuffed up or was made to be slick so the paint would fall off. Signed, pissed off because GMC and Chevy do not put off a decent paint product
@Rikki G I think they tried to rely on a chemical adhesion with the paint and primer that way they didn’t have to spend more time and money having the primer sanded. Didn’t work too well for them but you’re probably right about people just coming back and buying a new pickup when it happened. My dad said they had the same problem back to ‘88 when they came out with the new body style after the square body’s, and someone at the paint shop we get our paint from said they never fixed it until 2014.
@@WeberAuto23 the people who paint know better than that they know the stuff the primer up if it's slick. It's a damn upper management wanting to make more millions for their salary while the workers get by with barely enough to feed themselves and their families. F*** those corporate bastards
I have a pearl white 2014 GMC Sierra that I bought used and was originally a Canadian truck from Alberta. A couple of months after buying it the paint started coming off along leading edges. I assumed that the truck was exposed to a chemical. Now after watching this and reading comments, I’m thinking that it’s just a poor primer.
Outside of the paint, the truck is mechanically great and rides really well. The exposed metal isn’t rusting, so metallurgy has improved over the years. I tend to run my vehicles for long periods, and my truck is outside in the rain, snow and hail, so I’ll just put up with it, but man, it looks nasty.
Typical GM lack of quality. It's been happening for 20 years.
I don,t think this a long term repair
yep Fords do it too...Ford. GM dont care...im looking at new vehicle but it wont be either of them...when people finally stop buying their garbage maybe then theyll step.up..but probably not
Not one time did you ask or tell crit of paper
I'm a middle aged woman. It would be nice to know what you are actually using. I don't see this video as a tutorial.
That really doesn't look too hard.
Soon as you fix this it will peel somewhere else.
Yep. Peeling off the easily removable loose paint and feathering in the edges is just buying time; maybe good enough to sell it quickly. But eventually the OEM paint that wasn't removed will separate from the primer coat. Although this problem shows up first/worst on white paint exposed to sunlight, the root cause is everywhere, including inner surfaces like door jambs & the firewall. The only way to really fix this - chemically stripping *all* the paint that doesn't easily flake off - will cost more than most of the affected vehicles are worth.
Gm paint is absolutely horrible. Any year models
this happens on Hondas , Toyotas , fords dodges early 2000 to mid 2000 just punch it in youtube
Put some gloves on
You fucked that paint up js
I'm curious for your reasoning. They stated multiple times that the owner was looking to keep cost down. I'd say they did just that and were still able to do the job correctly. My only head scratch is to how any blending was done with all the tape and paper on
This literally just happened on my 2018 Z71 LTZ on both back doors where window pillar is at. Sprayed it with a water hose to give it a wash and it trailed all the way to the top on both sides. What a waste.
Not bad for $500
wish I could have him do my 97 tahoe ... nice vehicle with low miles for the age but the paint job is sh!t :( I am going to go for it ...
