- I hope you're ready to see someone's head explode. Jim and Wes try unweave the most convoluted story in DC Comics History, Nightwing Annual 2024. Bea the Pirate Queen was already a convoluted idea but this week DC Comics and Travis Moore take it to an epic new level. There have never been more twists, turns and double-crosses in a single comic issue. NIghtwing Annual 2024 will go down in the annals of DC Comics history as spectacularly terrible. Wes and Jim from Weird Science try not to lobotomize themselves explaining what actually happens in Nightwing Annual. Unraveling the most convoluted story in DC Comics history.

"Put a random woman on the cover of the Nightwing Annual, I don't care. Just make sure she's gay." -Jim Lee (probably)
“Hey, Alan Moore! Come work for me at Wildstorm, I’ll give you a great deal! I won’t turn around and sell my company with you shackled to it to DC, forcing you to work for a company that you swore to never work for ever again.”
-Jim Lee (probably)
This wasn’t a Nightwing Annual it was a Bea Bennet Annual.
Why promote it if you hate it? I swear, Americans aren't as smart as they let on. And I am glad China is winning the global dominance game because if Africa had to follow someone into the future, China is the better option. The West is actually stupid
Dropping this Nightwing run after the initial arc turns out to have saved me so much money
“Bob was actually space tofu!” That line from an episode of the 2000s Teen Titans cartoon makes more sense than some of these comic book stories.
RIP nightwing
Sadly, he survived a bullet to the head only to be killed again like this.
This pointless character was revived in case they move forward with a Nightwing series or film. They shoehorned in a black woman so they can cast her as the love interest in a project. Also, if Disney moves forward with it's Pirates of the Caribbean "She-Boot", DC can have its own pirate female character.
Pinky and the Brainiac. Today, we plot to take over the DC Universe.
For DC Spring Breakout, here is what I have to say for this comic. For the Harley Quinn and King Shark part, I like that Harley was able to help King Shark escape Belle Reeve so that they can celebrate his birthday by meeting Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Hal Jordan Green Lantern and the Green Lantern Corps (with Soranik Natu returning as Green Lantern again), Superman, and Mr. Mxyzsptlk before they return back to Belle Reeve. Also, Superman humoring and humbling Waller to make sure that Harley and King Shark won’t get caught by her. For the Batman part, I like that Bruce told Mr. Freeze that his wife Nora gave him a chance of happiness by giving him a dance at a ball. Also, since this story is set before Alfred’s death in 2019, I assume that a flashback of Bruce at a ball is set in July 1939 (since it’s set a month after the Waynes’ death by Joe Chill where Bruce was eight years old) and that the ball started in 1919 in the pre-Crisis Earth-One/New Earth/Prime Earth continuity. This means that Mr. Freeze and Nora are over a decade older than Bruce. For the Titans part, it’s just the Titans facing off against the Fearsome Five (who didn’t make their debut until the Wolfman-Perez era) and Charybdis (who didn’t make his debut until Peter David’s Aquaman run). That’s it. At least Megan Fitzmartin was able to continue the Titans’ adventures after Mark Waid’s run without ruining them like she did with Tim Drake and the Young Justice generation. For the Metal Men part, I like that the Metal Men and Dr. Magnus were able to spend their spring break having fun at the beach. It’s really sweet and relaxing! For the Katanna part, I’m impressed that Katanna was able to use her katanna to defeat the Trafficker and a demon before momentarily seeing her husband again. For the Lex Luthor part, I find it interesting and hilarious that Lex somehow was buried alive inside a coffin before he thought about the Superman family to escape himself from a coffin by himself. It reminds of how Jason Todd had to use something to escape himself from a coffin in a Batman annual. Also, post-Flashpoint Maxima cameo after her death in a Death Metal tie-in from 2020. For the Martian Manhunter part, I find it amusing that J’onn and Clayface had to shapeshift as various heroes and villains (i.e. Superman, Barry Allen Flash, and Jackson Hyde for J’onn and Doomsday, Eobard Thawne Reverse-Flash, Black Manta, and a white Martian for Clayface) before J’onn was able to defeat him. Also, J’onn eating Chocos (because he has a sweet tooth and that he loves Chocos) and performing Shakespeare at the Coast City park. For the Superman part, I like that Clark (as Superman) told Jimmy Olsen about the time he went to a ballpark when he first arrived in Metropolis before he was able to defeat Manchester Black, whose appearance is set between his encounter with Jon Kent in 2016/2017 in the Rebirth Superman run and his second death in Action Comics 1050 in 2022.
For the House of Brainiac Special, here is what I have to say about this comic. For the Brainiac part, I find it interesting that we get to see the parallels between Krypton (a peaceful and futuristic place before its destruction by natural causes) and Czarnia (a peaceful and futuristic place before it’s destruction by Lobo). Also, Brainiac meeting Ms. Trudy, Lobo’s teacher. For the Perry White part, I find it hilarious for Bibbo to talk to someone on the phone while he’s endorsing Perry While as mayor of Metropolis. Also, portrait of him and Superman because he Superman’s biggest fan, which is really sweet and impressive. I like that Bibbo gave advise to Perry White about him becoming mayor and trying to make the world a better place, resulting in Perry doing a debate with his opponent and Bibbo meeting someone who contemplates about what he’s going to do. If I stayed in Metropolis, I would vote for Perry White as mayor because he’s the heart and soul of Metropolis, is affiliated with the Superman Family, and would do whatever it takes to protect the truth from harm. For the Amanda Waller part, I’m actually suprised and impressed that the Brainiacs of many worlds are the Light who saved her from Earth 3 and that they share the same goals (but different methods) on destroying the entire superhero community. Also, mentioning No Justice, in which that event was remembered because of Francis Manupaul art and being a prelude to Scott Snyder’s run on Justice League.
For the Flash annual, I find it interesting that Wally has to do whatever it takes to find his family, encounter the Stillness (who told him that they had to do something because they’re bored), and for Ace and Avery to meet the Rogues (i.e. Abra Kadabra, Evan McCullough Mirror Master, Folded Man, and Grodd) and to make sure that they’ll warn the Flash Family about what’s going on. Also, Jay, Barry, and Jesse doing their work as superheroes; Irey finding something; Jai working with Michael Holt; and Linda telling Waller not to touch her son Wade because mother’s love and not trusting her. Also, mentioning the Source Wall, even though it was destroyed at the end of Dark Nights: Metal in 2017. Also, the solicitations lying that Circuit Breaker is going to be in this annual, since we haven’t seen them in this comic. Overall, this is a trippy and psychedelic comic.
For the Harley Quinn annual, the only good thing about this comic is that, aside from the fact that it’s not written by Tini Howard, it shows Harley spending time at a cruise. The only thing I can criticize about this comic is Vandal Savage in this comic, even though he can’t leave Gotham since a meteor can make him immortal as long as he can stay in Gotham.
For the Nightwing annual, even though it’s unnecessary for Bea Bennet to be part of this annual, I like that Travis Moore used her to make sure that we get to learn more about her backstory and origins that dates back 20 years, including her mom supposedly getting killed by KGBeast, her being raised by her adopted father, being recruited by Spyral, meeting and forming a romantic relationship with Ric Grayson and keeping tabs on him, and having an interesting life that combines what Benjamin Percy, Dan Jurgens, and Tom Taylor was doing. It’s impressive and well done. I wonder if Bea realized that her biological mother is alive and will tell her why she faked her death to protect her in the final issues of Tom Taylor’s Nightwing run. Also, since Bea was nine years old when her origin started 20 years ago, this makes her 29 years old in the present day.
All these layers of characterization and she's not gay? I'm almost shocked.
Ultimate twist: she went back in time and killed her own mother.
She needs to go back in time and do that before her birth, spare us readers from having to suffer her existence.
Oh boy. Nothing like a comic cover with the main character in the background to the strong female protagonist with the most bland expression on her face. I can't wait to see how she puts a high skilled, highly trained, acrobat, martial artist, detective in his place. It's breaking new ground!
The pirate trope is always so boring
Pirates in general or is there a specific trope about pirate stories that bores you? Either way, Bea sucks.
The story you discribed is that, ultimately, she was an espionage Honeypot to entrap Dick Grayson.
When the heartless saga started in Nightwing I started buying comics for the first time since the 90s and after 8 months I was done the story was just dragging on and on and on so I checked out. I haven't bought another comic since.
DC needs to know; there's nothing wring with being a normal person in their storylines. Sometimes, you need a person who understands table etiquette and uses the metro to work at normal middle class job.
Nightwing Annual -> Is about a random girl boss black woman self insert.
They should have gotten the Dread Pirate to draw this pirate comic, that would have been great. But this story sounds ridiculous, every day you think it can’t get worse and DC says “hold my beer”.
More convoluted then why Frank Miller decided to make 3 sequels to Dark Knight Returns?
Well, that's easy, DC kept driving dump trucks full of money up to his house. They paid him $1 million up front for 2 and he didn't even have a story in mind yet.
Make sense now?😄
Nightwing is dead too, I see.
Nightwing/Dick Grayson Robin is my favorite DC superhero
I wish he was treated with more respect.
I liked Tim Drake for a long time, but they’ve done so little of worth with that character over the years, even before the current gimmicks. I hated that he got stuck with “Red Robin”, while Dick was able to become Nightwing, Jason became Red Hood and Babs became Oracle. Red Robin is such a terrible name and a horrible “progression” for any boy wonder. Great job, Mark Waid….
Is Travis Moore one of those super talented artists that just happens to sadly be a crappy writer? Because this honestly does feel like some tween's early attempt at a Mary Sue OC.
Why super-heroes can't have normal girlfriends anymore? Bea was a good character like a bartender. This make the support characters more relatable. I remember of Bernie Rosenthal a lawer that was a good Steve Rogers romantic interest and a nice character back in the 80's Captain America books. Nightwing books needs a break in my opinion.
This came with the craze that everyone around the superhero has to be special, that's why we see families being heroes, love interests being heroes and so on. It's quite annoying because the Hero stops to be special for everyone to be.
At $4.99 an issue, I can't keep this on a pull list. All of this stuff has me so close to trade wait. I'm glad I passed on all the annuals. Not sure if I continue to get this to finally get the conclusion of Heartless storyline.
Mark Russel is not as smart as he fancies himself being. I think he let the praise he got for The Flintstones comic (which had it's good moments) go to his head.
Personally, I doubt we will ever see anything convoluted than Hawkman between 1986-1996
The original Crisis ruined Hawkman character forever. I miss Pre-Crisis Katar Hol.
There's been many of those sadly lol
Why is so hard to make a good supporting character without add all these convoluted all skills, powers and connections?
Jay Nakumara, MJ as Jackpot and now this?
I would add the Council of Lois Lane from My Adventures of Superman making another multiverse story. You cannot just make Lois a normal woman? She need a council of Lois to warn her about Evil Superman? Really?
Is it hard to write a supporting that came come in on their own to make the readers like the supporting character?
The last good supporting normal character is Gnake from Miles Morales comics. Gnake didn’t get powers, he not have a deep secret that connected to Marvel universe.
He just a normal guy. And people likes Gnake
12:03 Really, Jim? I saw many people like Tom King’s Vision comics. That comic basically kickstarted Tom King’s career and he move to DC and now we live in this dark timeline.
Jim was really mad. Not sure I have heard him be this forthright with his anger toward a book.
I got to page three and stopped.
They actually want you to pay for this???😂😂😂😂
I am the biggest Nightwing fan but when I saw Taylor was writing it I stopped reading. He’s a clown.
DC should be embarrassed by this , but they won’t. And will make more.
Can we get Nightwing a competent writer he needs a good writer again it annoys Me hack writers keep ruining him
Errr Dan Jurgens and Ben Percy both took on nightwing post Sam Humphries. That was before taylor took it on. Dan Jurgens and Ben Percy are far from hacks but let’s not kid ourselves and act like Jurgens wrote a good Nightwing book.
Taylor’s run isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be,
@cicolasnage5684 not calling them hacks I'm saying I'm tire of these hack stories for the characters
Side question. Why are modern comics so damn ugly now? The art. the colors. Hideous.
Because they are pushing bisexual lighting on their readers.
Its like how things went south woth naomi from brian michael bendis. The more powerful and important he made her, the less interesting she became
I think they're trying to get that demographic to read comics. Sorry but white men are not gonna be alive in the next century with the gender war going on. White women are not having your babies. I am just stating form an outsider's perspective. Africans don't read a lot but the more educated they become it would be nice to have comics with characters who look like them like Black Panther
Wait, so Destiny finally came back... in a DC comic? Did anyone tell Mystique?
Make Nightwing Great Again!!!
IIs this Travis guy going to the main writer on Knightwing?
Isn't this annual suppose to be about Nightwing?
Wait wait wait... PIRATE TRAINING??? What the actual hell? 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
Thank you for saving me $6 😂 I bought space ghost instead and it’s quite good I suggest you read it and review it on the channel!
I saw the cover and was intrigued.
This was both bad and boring. It sucks and blows at the same time. So sad.
Hey Wes, my birthday is next week. Any chance I can get that Superboy-Prime being patient zero for comic pros attacking fans video?
You guys are more entertaining than the comics out.
This character was created because she fits the demographic that the studios love putting in films and tv shows.
And what's the issue with that? White peopel aren't having kids. Companies are thinking about the future and by 2050, whites will be below 50%. The issue is YOU, not the minorities because they're having kids at least. They're not ironically online whining about things that don't matter
Too bad this wasn't in 3-D!
I can’t believe they got more for that awful spring break crap
listening to Jim is fun bruv, calls out shit in an entertaining manner.
sml hat lizard people are killing us.
Oh, please. If you think this is convoluted, then wait untill you see Hawkman’s ridiculously retconned history.
miles morales is miles morales
And John Kent is John Kent
Comics still sell in 2024?
Who are the clowns writing this? What happened to good stories about fighting villains?
Dc version of gun honey?
Ok so I think someone here is trying to say this isn't good? Ok so noted. WTF20.
That middle section of the Brainiac special was trash.
You guys just explained Wolverine, Hawkman, Powergirl, and Donna Troy's origin if it was told in one initial comic instead of fleshed out over decades.
I couldnt read this pirate comic because it is rated arrrrrrrrrrr!!! Come'on!! Thats funny.
This cover is brutal. Who at dc is deciding that this what is going to attract people to buy? Issue was not that great. A story that did not need to be told.
I read this crap and it made no sense at all. What sociopath wrote this self centered story? These writers need to go back to school cause they are some of the worst writers.
Something tells me the schools would just make it worse at this point.
Its giving mary sue vibes
Because the powers that be at DC won't let any long story arch play out because there has to be a crisis crossover event every 6 months that pisses all over writers original story plans. Too many times we readers have been left with unfinished, or teased stories, that 1 or 2 years later we finally get a half assed rushed conclusion😮
How is this nightwing?? It's so on the nose embarrassing.
Beautiful Black !
If a conservative creator made a parody of Mary Sue characters that has been through the arc Bea has been through, they'd get criticized for being too obvious 😂 Hearing all this, it's actually insane how somebody could write all that and then look at their audience like "Well, isn't she something?" Like no bro get this crap outta here
lol I had this in my pull box today together with a $10!!!! Daredevil annual. I put both of them back. This is especially because who gives a crap about that chick honestly. I don’t.
This so stupid. They could've just made things short and simple, but still effective and straight to the point. They didn't have to make her so fake and perfect in every way. She could've just been a normal person who lived an ordinary life, and she could've been friends with Nightwing even still to this day.
Of course, it would've been sad that she was still in love with him and maybe tragic in a way because she was in love with "Ric Grayson" more, but even when Dick Grayson returned, it could've just made Bea appreciate her time with him, and just still be grateful that both he and her continue to care about each other. And from that day on, they could still on occasion, whenever Nightwing needs to just take a break from Blüdhaven and lay low for a while, be thankful for the little things, like their close friendship. But no, they had to make her a fucking pirate ship captain, and a spy-smasher, counter-terrorist and crime fighter, too. 🙄😒
Lol! They might as well add multi-billionairess playgirl and industrialist tycoon, a genius neurosurgeon, and a half-vampire, half-werewolf supernatural hybrid crossbreed while they are still at it, lol! 😂
Don't stop self-inserting and being a Mary Sue now. DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Man I tells ya. Give them a half of a chance, and they would fuck up a good cup of coffee if you let'em. (facepalm) 🤦♂️ smh 😑
I hypothesize that DC must hate Nightwing. When they want to reeeeally F a character, bury them, THEN go back, and pull them out of the grave in order to just shit in their face yet again ,they choose him…. Nevermind, after this annual my prediction is confirmed. They just hijacked his book for some lame ass Mary sue fan-fic. Definite hatred. Lol
Awesome work guys
Stop.just stop. I DONT KNOW WHO THIS I DONT CARE WHO SHE IS WTF DC you FUMBLED SO HARD
