  • Comic book fans and professionals alike are trying to keep AI art out of the industry. But it appears a full-on witch hunt has started and people are being tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. The latest example is DC Comics pulling 3 covers from Chinese artist Auston Guo, better known as Daxiong. Internet sleuths ran the covers through an AI detector that flagged the art as over 99% sure generative AI. But Daxiong claims he created the art by hand. Wes explains why DC Comics pulling 3 covers from Auston Guo is a rush to judgement and destroying his reputation without ay real evidence. Comic book AI witch hunt claims innocent victim?

    Liam Sharp did the old Spawn Dark Ages series and will be doing a new run of it too. With that he did painted covers that looked different than the interior art. Using a combo of traditional and digital art with some photo textures to I believe. Needless to say this was decades before Ai art. The accusations are getting out of hand. I think in the long run artists will use it as a tool that is customized to be trade on the own style, that they will use to make layout roughs to get approved on before creating the final piece themselves. I think the main problem people have is the systems have been trained on artists work without their permission.

    I think that if you train ML to detect AI art by having it learn on a dataset of real art and AI art, you will get false positives if AI art has your art in its dataset.
    It might also detect stuff like tracing, stroke stabilization and mirroring parts of the image as marks that are too accurate/smooth/symmetrical to be made by a human.
    You can train ML badly by using the wrong dataset, or having the wrong parameters, or having incorrect thresholds on the parameters.

    I believe he may have used AI in some parts (just the way you can use it inside Photoshop with Firefly and Krita which have integrated generative AI inside their software), as in coloring to help speed up the process, especially if he had a tight deadline because his line work is very complex. Even so, it's his style, and it was made digitally also because you can polish it more. Once AI art becomes indistinguishable from digital art, there may be a shift in certain art niches to go after physical original pieces, just like the ones he already has.

The fundamentals of his sketching (past and present) don't match his finished covers. And these variants are up for sale for hundreds of dollars. I guess there's a sucker born every minute.
    Agreed the AI detectors are iffy at best. Sure they put most of my suspected artist's work as AI to a strong degree, but it also found one of my images nearly 100% AI. These detectors are probably as reliable as a lie detector machine and should be viewed as such. Nothing compares to human legwork and investigation. Hilariously enough, on eBay I'm seeing some fledgling artists copying AI artwork and trying to sell it off as their own.
    Sure AI can be easy and has its place. In fact, I'm having a hard time finding a colorist that can color the way I like that I'd look into AI to finish off flats. But in my case, I'd keep my original line art intact, because I'm a comic book line guy. Color to me is a glossy afterthought.
    If an artist wants to make a living being a script kitty prompting AI art, all the more power to them. A.I. is just like V.R. or any other similar computer software programs. It can be used for either positive or negative uses as a new advanced machine. It's either a benefit or a hazard. If it's a benefit to art, then it's not going to be a problem.

    I’m an artist myself (concept art for film/ games & illustration) & any artist can prove our work with a process gif. Also, if working digitally you can setup your computer to record every stroke or every second. So I assume the illustrators here did use AI, since it’d be very easy to prove otherwise if they didn’t.
    Also, the reason that people are saying those sketches are traced… is because they are. Let’s give the benefit of the doubt: if he was working traditionally maybe he didn’t have prelim pics of sketches so he went back & made them. But then where are the thumbnails? A series of different comps or color comps? What did DC’s art director approve as an intermediate piece? Anyone who’s worked professionally can tell you: we’d have other intermediate pieces not just a perfect sketch + colored sketch. If you’ve got 3 covers for DC & that’s going to be a big deal in your career, you make darn sure to show your process. I’d record it whether I were working traditionally or digitally.

      Yes, AI art needs samples in order to build its neural networks. That is how machine learning works. Do you think it is theft when an artist uses references? A better analogy is taking away an artist's brain. Do you really think AI makes collages with its samples or something? It is always people against ai art who seem to not understand how basic machine learning works.

      It's not theft if it's using images with permission. Some AI generators only use public domain images or images that the company has bought the rights to. And some artists have made custom generators by training the AI on their own artwork.

    I get artist and writers feel threatened about losing their Jobs to AI but I’m so sick and tired of this stubborn, closed minded way of thinking that all AI is bad, we shouldn’t use it and we need to ostracize anyone who uses it. AI is going to continue to improve and it’s going to be able to replace you. It doesn’t matter if you like it or not. You can accept it or be in denial but it’s going to happen. To deny the use of AI is to deny progress. What are we supposed to do? Not accept the advancement of technology because you don’t like it? Because that’s how yall sound. Learn to adapt. Stop being selfish.

    • @therq946

      I don't think you see the real issue artists have, the question that needs to be answered by the courts or the government is whether using artists' copyrighted work to train AI is legal or not. It's not so much about losing jobs but being ripped off. If everything on the internet is free to use, your own art can be used to put you out of a job. It would be better if a copyright holder was paid for the right to have their work used.

    • @fishin4bass2002
      @fishin4bass2002 Месяц назад

      @@therq946 well marvel and dc paid a lot of these artist to write and draw for them. They own it so they can do whatever. As for copying art they didn’t buy, what’s the difference between an artist looking at a picture someone else drew and making their own version of it and AI doing the same? We don’t hear people complain when a current artist takes an original Spider-Man picture drawn by Steve Ditko and then draws their version of it and makes money off it but if AI does it then it’s somehow evil?
      Also you have people who take images and use ai in their free time to make pictures for fun. No profits at all. People making memes with AI are constantly attacked and accused of helping the big corporations and taking money away from artist when all they did was make a meme. That’s insanity and that’s what will make artist lose the argument. Something I think would be amazing is that in the near future, instead of complaining about some X-men or Spider-Man comic we don’t like, we can just have AI make comics for us and make them the way we want and it will basically be for free. I see nothing wrong with that. If artist have a problem with that then they should blame themselves for not making a good product.

    • @therq946
      @therq946 Месяц назад

      @@fishin4bass2002 Disney who owns Marvel is suing AI. So they don't like their copyrighted stuff being trained in AI either. Most of Hollywood is suing AI over copyright infringement also. But Marvel and DC do ALLOW artists to profit from their IPs to a point. If tomorrow Marvel said nobody can sell another picture of Spider-Man without compensation for Marvel the fair use goes out the window and Marvel would be allowed to litigate those who break its copyright and trademark. Artists should have a say if their art is trained on AI even "just for fun". A machine does not learn to draw like a human, far from it. Just because you want it doesn't mean you get it for free, a great artist and a lousy artist deserve the same protections. The laws that protect artists are being blurred by AI but soon we'll find out where the courts and government stand.
