  • Tom Brevoort and Marvel Comics keep spilling the tea regarding the summers X-Men comics relaunch. Unfortunately, the more information they divulge, the easier it is to see the massive flaw that's going destroy it. Tom Brevoort has no understanding what makes the X-Men special. And plans on turning the X-Men franchise into the Avengers franchise. Great idea if you're a movie executive, but a terrible idea if you're responsible for comic books. Wes breaks down Tom Brevoort's terrible plans for X-Men and explains why From The Ashes is destined to fail. X-Men comics relaunch has a fundamental, destructive flaw.

Also the fact that mutants rights are more restrictive than human rights and the implication that stronger mutants can draft weaker mutants against their will. Like Emma will do to Kitty.

Better, get Claremont back or other veteran writers like John Byrne, Roy Thomas, Ann Nocenti, Peter David, Alan Davis, Louise Simonson etc.
Even someone like Lobdell is better than what we have nowadays. Maybe even Liefeld. There also needs to be firm rules writers cannot break because Krakoa era shows far these netflix bag chasers will take it.
Also interiors should also be done by cover artists, we shouldn't have an amazing cover then below subpar art within the book.

For mutant solo spotlight title will always work much better then any mini or ongoing title. Mutant shine when set around other mutant because their most fondamental characteristic his own they react and adapt to their mutation compared to others. As for Avengers vs X-Men book dynamic, it is to compare cop beating organised crime to a bunch of school kids teaming up against the school bully.

They need to cut down on titles. Two main X-Men titles that deal with different threats. X-Force to do black op and get their hands dirty. X-Factor can be the olive branch type team with a rotating roaster that can be used as a single issue story or spotlight book. If they want a New Mutants type book, use it as a school/training slice of life book, not throwing them against Nimrod in their first mission because they are still learning to use their powers. Give these books time to breathe and establish themselves before giving anyone a solo book. They just need to cut down on titles and be laser focused on a handful.

    Avengers Magic? What Magic?
What story has actually brought new people into conics and sold gangbusters? Or are we classifying "didn't lose as many readers as the other comic lines" as Avengers Magic now?
Though honestly it could be a fair metric at this point.
With all the blatant character assassinations and years of fans dropping out and swearing off Marvel for life like myself, managing to not cut your readership in half by the end of a run is probably a magic at Marvel these days.
If they were still alive even Stan and Jack couldn't save Marvel now. Not even with a Bill and Ted Adventure to get all the greatest comic writers in history at their prime.
They broke the universe, the characters, and the fans trust too many times to come back from. I don't hate the bad comics, I hate the company, and I hate the writers for attacking the fans over and over again. They chose to hate and attack me based on my skin color, my genitals, my sexual preference, and blaming me for anything anyone in history who shares any of those three characteristics with me has ever done. That's textbook bigotry.
Cap didn't stand for bigotry, Professor X didn't stand for bigotry, my personal hero Peter Parker never stood for bigotry. I'll be damned if I spend money to support bigotry wrapped in the skins of the heroes who for decades taught children that evil shit is wrong.
Well that turned into an off topic rant...sorry.
Anyway, have a nice day and thanks for the vid. And listening to the audience vent in the comments, I'm sure that's gotta be a miserable experience some days.

To me the fatal flaw of this new relaunch is Krakoa Era being part of the main canon after butchered the franchise completely. How the X-Men can be a superhero team after Krakoa turned all them in unlikeable murderous jerkasses? Brevoort can put on dozens of X titles every month that don't will change anything. You cannot make a dead franchise be great again. Just watch X-Men 97.

Actually, the X-Men trying to redeem themselves in the eyes of the world could work really well as a status quo. Humanity rightfully hates them so now they're under tremendous pressure to prove that they're heroes. Now it's more important than ever to draw the line between the philosophy of the X-Men and the Brotherhod. The team needs to start saving people again and...

We've seen it with cable and Deadpool and more limited runs like beast and Wolverine. I remember when they had Marvel 2 in 1 and Marvel team-up where they used the thing and Spider-Man to team up with other Heroes. Great way to introduce new heroes or reintroduce old ones. Unfortunately now an obscure hero is brought forth there either replaced for no reason or changed in some way to make them more diverse but not more interesting.

Marvel is creativly bankrupt and run by people who dont really understand the heros they are writing about. I would love a nightcrawler solo book if they wrote nightcrawler before they ruined him, talking his backstory and throwing it into the trash. It almost sounds like Tom is trying to understand but still missing the point. I remember the Hellfire club series when Kitty Pride and Wolverine had to rescue the rest of the Xmen. That was good storytelling. Marvel comics and "going nowhere fast" go together like bread and butter. 😊

Nightcrawler had plenty of solo runs in the past that mostly failed : Before Krakoa, you had Claremont's which was cancelled by the first year as it had to warp everything up on the 12th issue. That solo came after Nightcrawler was brought back to life following years of absence.
Still most of those pre-Krakoa runs were at least enjoyable and the people writing them knew the characters.
The same cannot be said about Si Spurrier writing Nightcrawler's solos during Krakoa.

8:16 Uncanny X-Men only makes sense if they wanted to cash in on the X-Men'97 show because, in comics, that team doesn't make a lot of sense due to what went down during Krakoa... Or more accurately what didn't go down.
None of these characters interacted with or showed any resemblance of caring about each other in 3 literal years no matter how many horrible experiences and tricky situations they found themselves in.
With the exception of Rogue and Gambit who lived together under the same roof as a married couple, how long has it been since that roster had any kind of personal talk or fun time together ? Or went on a X-Men-like mission before FoHoX (and that run would only concern Wolverine and Nightcrawler) ?
Nightcrawler has talked to Wolverine, I'd say, twice between HoX/PoX and FoHoX and those conversations were surface level at best and out of character at worst... This is the only character in the roster he's talked to in 3 years while he wasn't drunk out of his mind.
Wolverine hasn't teamed up with Rogue and Gambit in forever, let alone Jubilee.
Jubilee has at best seen Nightcrawler once or twice in passing while he was at the Quiet Council and it's even less than that with the others.
Rogue and Gambit have been pretty much cut off of all the others and have went on more missions with the friends of their teammates than with the teammates themselves.
Rogue went on more X-Men-like missions with a teammate that has a healing factor similar to Wolverine (Deadpool) than with Wolverine himself and Gambit went on more X-Men-like missions with a teammate that has teleportation abilities that worked in the exact same way as Nightcrawler (Azazel) than with Nightcrawler himself.

Yeah right off the bat Wes gets it. You buy the Avengers so you can get all your favorite heroes in one title for a major threat only all of them can handle together. You buy X-Men to read about a group of "outcast" if you will battling to find a place in society and save that society from threats that they will never be fully thanked or appreciated for by said society. Look if we are talking mini-series then yeah Tom has a point. But if we are talking ongoing series then he is kidding himself. Look at the industry the way it is now. You'd need a MEGA talent to work on the title to get numbers to keep publishing. Storm, Sabretooth, Rouge, Gambit, Psylocke, and Cyclops & Jean Grey all had mini-series during time of far better sales, and nobody kidded themselves that they could be ongoings. Only Wolverine is in that category, and I think its a bad idea to relaunch Wolverine again instead of just keep publishing him to show his sales strength. Cable is dubious at best currently for a solo book. (it's David Gabriel too) Plus the buying habits and attitudes of the fans, which are cultivated in a certain way by the publishers, would hold that it better be good or you've got nothing to work with after a few issues. WTF20.

He's a great character in a team book but a miniseries like "Colossus: Bloodline" or "X-Men: Liberators" is really the best you can pull out of him as far as solo books are concerned. That being said, I would love to see a decent miniseries about the Rasputin family drama.

I love the Xmen, have all of the Good ones. Great heroes BUT I don't think that the Xmen have anything " Better" than any other team...I think that they sold more copies than AVENGERS and JUSTICE LEAGUE because Xmen usually had the FAN FAVE ARTISTS. Byrne, Sivestri, Jim Lee.....If THOSE guys were on AVENGERS or JLA during their " Heyday" , WITH a good Writer at the same time ,they too would have sold millions. I dont think that Xmen will EVER sell like that again, nor be much more popular than the Avengers or League again. Truly think that " those days are over". Hell, even their movies (Wolverine as well) were NOWHERE near the box office Hits of the Avenger Movies.

If you are gonna price things at more than a Dollar (in this case what is it now? 4$?), you need less books not more. Nevermind the fact that a Solo title is only as good as it's antagonists, if you don't create antagonists unique to that particular hero, they aren't gonna sell for shiz, unless you have a reeeaaally good gimmick to hook them with (like She-hulk breaking the fourth wall while fighting Marvel's Lamest villians in humorous fashion).

So because a character hasn’t traditionally been a book seller
They shouldn’t get a book? This is the attitude that has DC only putting out Batman titles. Sometimes you have to try new things and see what works. Not everyone will land but who knows maybe one of them will end up like Matt Fractions Hawkeye or Ms Marvel. But you won’t ever know if you don’t give anyone a shot

    • @spinningtornado4543

Wes' main critique here is that this X-Men reboot's aim seems to be to release as many solo titles/team books as possible in the shortest amount of time, which is a terrible idea :
Oversaturating the comics market has been one of the main jump off points for many readers at the start of Krakoa and is still a problem readers face today in this last chapter of the era.
Many of the characters teased to be receiving their own solo titles are also known to have previously failed at keeping them going time and time again so to see Marvel giving them another shot isn't very reasonable for them to do considering the current state of X-Men comics.
