  • There are a lot of qualities modern comic pros can learn from legend Herb Trimpe. Despite giving Marvel the best 30-years of his life, they fired him in one of the most brutal ways imaginable. At 56, Herb Trimpe was jobless and looking for a new lease on life beyond comic books. His story of resiliency and overcoming adversity is something that should inspire us all in hard times. Wes talks about Herb Timpe's experience of being fired after 30-years of legendary service and what we can learn about resiliency. Legendary lessons, what comic pros can learn from this icon.

I got to meet Herb Trimpe, about 4 months before he died, at a show in San Diego. He was such a gentleman. He was super gracious, and just an all around warm hearted guy. I was really glad I got the opportunity to meet him, before he was lost to the world. He is truly one of the comic greats, and is without question missed.

This hits harder than I ever imagined. I helped start up an organization during the pandemic and was one of the key players in getting it through the most unpredictable economy since World War 2. Unpaid overtime, working weekends, the whole bit.
Two months ago, I was told I must take a 30% pay cut for reasons unrelated to my job performance. Brutal. The lesson...it's just a job. Do your best when you are there but don't give the bastards a minute more.
And don't believe the BS about a workplace being a family. You can make friends with your co-workers and have productive relationships with your managers. But you are paid to perform a service for 40 hours a week. Last time I checked, that was no one's definition of a family.
My goodness, it felt good to get that out ;-)

Despite Herb’s sad tale, this is the type of comic book history that’s worth talking about. I always loved reading Roy Thomas’s Alter Ego magazine. Maybe a RUclips version would be worth a shot. Bless you Wes 🙏

And it's a shame that these editors and publishers don't exhibit even a trace of the ethics, morality and decency that embodies so many of their fictional characters.
Nice change of pace, Wes. Good to be reminded of the sacrifice of people like Trimpe, who added so much value to our lives.

As I have said before, it is this short sighted attitude from those completely in charge that are a drag on the industry since the beginning. Now Herb did have a long career, but its the way he exited that career which in the telling signs of the continuous problems. It is what holds the industry back and prevents it from becoming what it could be. I always believe it is best to take a symbiotic stance between company and creator in this cases, since no creators the company has nothing to sell. You don't give away the store to ANYONE, business is still business. But if someone is helping you make solid dollars you do your best to keep them around and happy. And if you have to let them go, you do it begrudgingly and make that person feel like it wasn't all for nothing. Note to creators though...SAVE YOUR MONEY....there are cases of too many creators not planning their future and when it all crashes down its not necessarily somebody else's fault for it. WTF20.

A month ago, my job position was casually eliminated at a corporation I'd devoted 25+ years of my life. I've been depressed and riddled with anxiety ever since and developing bad habits. It mirrors exactly what Herb Trimpe went through (although we were in different fields). It's time to pick myself back up, regain confidence, and learn something new. Thank you!

I've seen too much "Panhandling" online from comic creators (Some still getting work *initials P.D.* to recall one them). Welcome to the world most of us live in without job security or decent health insurance, but we don't have a following to call on for money because they won't go to Walmart, or wherever to make a living and get insurance. (Hell, I had to accept a job as a telemarketer back in the early 2000's - don't judge, needed a job and money). Trimpe proved his maturity, intelligence, and resilience by getting through the loss and moving on. GREAT VIDEO, WES!

Two Morrows put out a good biography about Herb Trimpe. I don’t know if it’s funny or sad but I find it more entertaining to read about the people behind beloved characters and storylines these days. Although there’s plenty I’m good on not knowing anymore about and I’m pretty sure no one’s going to be reading their biography’s or pouring over their art books.

So what we can conclude is that comics is like any other industry. Once you did all they ask (sometimes more), they replace you like a gear in a clockwork.
And that history repeats itself, or perhaps it's best to say that it gets worse because little has changed.
But if can learn something from Herb is to never put all your eggs in the same chicken basket, and always look for a plan b in life

A wonderful artist. I loved his Hulk work as well has his Godzilla and Shogun Warriors runs. I purchased them from the first issue all the way until they stopped to my dismay. His Hulk was large and brutish like the Hulk should be rendered. Sorry to hear his was treated so badly by Marvel. But his life is an inspiration to us all. Marie Severin was also a favorite of mine.

Heck, most of today's "talent", in the Main Two, can't hold a candle to the life experiences and trails of the people they replaced. When you think about the greats, the influential, and the talented of yesteryear [the ones that gave us stories, characters, inspirations that later became icons], nearly all of them either served in some war, or lived through extreme poverty. Compared to today (where the problem started with the "Image Boys", as much as I love them, but they all where high-middle-class costal boys that never struggled), where the most "dangerous" situation is being forced to be an adult [Wade], and the most "extreme" trail is being a father/faithful spouse [Bendis].
Is it really a wonder way today's stories are bad? It is because the writers haven't done anything to tell, nor how the art is bad because the artist have seen nothing to express.
