One of the big successes of SS is the effort to be inclussive to women and bring strength training to them. Also, to always include a word of advice to the elderly. You just need to see the audience.
Nothing wrong with women working out, the lady in this video is strong and still looks very feminine. Serena Williams is strong and still very hourglass shaped.

It´s hard to believe how dumb I am. I´ve watched this video like two times a long ago, then I forgot the right way and now watching again I see that I was doing it wrong. Thanks for keeping the video online.
I need to preface my comment with the following: I admire Rip and his SS program and have used it with some success. However, the folks on here who are criticizing both the way Rip teaches the barbell row and his corpulence have a point. First, this method of rowing looks dangerous and is not an improvement over the Pendlay row. Secondly, while I don’t expect Rip to have a six-pack, he also doesn’t need to look like he has just swallowed a blue-ribbon pumpkin. He looked much better 10 years ago with still visible muscle and a slight paunch. He either needs to do something about his aversion to cardio or eat less. I swear, the only reason that they are clapping at the end is because he did not have a heart attack/stroke on that final lift.
Looks rough from front but that side shot he still has some muscle and the structure, still big vein down back his forearm. I bet he could bounce back and look better than 98% people his age group super quick. Just don't think he gives a shit, looks like alot of beer and Philly cheese steaks. A supinated grip also changes the angle at which the elbow travels, moving the "strike" point further back towards your waist, which engages more lats. Would recommend using the "natural" width supinated grip on a straight bar. "Natural" being where your hands naturally are (due to elbow valgus) when supinated with palms straight forward. This is rarely "shoulder width", especially for women (most women will be "wider" than shoulder width using this). Easy way to test: put straight bar at waist level. Let upper arms hang naturally. Supinate palms so they are facing straight forward. Walk to bar. Where you hands are, that's your grip width. Note: this will eliminate a LOT of elbow pain from doing straight bar curls or reverse grip anything with a straight bar.
@@Interesting_Egg Very simple way to say you didn't understand what I said. The point being that this grip width is going to vary for individuals, and it may vary for an individual depending on the grip used; ideal" may be different for pronated and supinated, or neutral, or in between (curl bar), given elbow valgus. Just like it does for BB curls. It is more critical for rows given the amount of weight being used. It's not "grip width" which determines the elbow position; it's just that some grips (supinated v. neutral v. pronated or in between) make your elbows want to travel in a different way if you don't think about it. The comment wasn't about saying anyone was wrong, at all. It was an addendum that can save people a lot of elbow issues/injuries. It also applies to deadlifts.
Watch the original video by Pendlay himself. Hips and knees do not move. He teaches it strict. Lower back is extended (not the case here) Only the upper back is rounded, to get full ROM. Just because the row starts of the floor, doesn't make it a 'Pendlay Row'.

well steroids alone does not build muscle,so I would not say Yates row is total crap just because Yates used drugs. There is people in all kinds of category`s that use drugs, but they still have to train. But modern bodybuilding or bodybuilding at all is not so very special for me,the guy`s in Steve Reeves / Reg Park era was more athletic and looked better than todays freaks. The strength training from powerlifters/weight lifters is more what I seek information/take advice from, but in this case there are two different ways of training and I just wonder the biggest difference between Yates row and Pendlay row,and why choose from the floor rather from knee area?Is it a plain back exercise to train only back or is it to build some more explosive fibers to help perform better in other lifts?
OMG man Yates row wasn't the only row he did ok,then main purpose of rows in Rippetoes program is to generate explosive power not big lats.Again so many ppl forget Starting strength is done for 3-4 months till the person stalls ,it's not like he's saying this is all you need to get a big back.
Reading through some of the comments and watching the video, it’s clear to me that this video is intended for power lifters and/or the majority of the audience are power lifters. If you’re a bodybuilder, like i am (or trying to be), this isn’t for you. Just be nice people…

TS50ER 😂thanks, this made my night
Not hating, but personaly I think Yates row is better than from the floor. If the bars under the knee,You focus more on legs like the deadlift.Yates also said that from the floor rowing put the spine in a more dangerous position.Maybe this(from the floor) is better for some more explosions/power for strength athletes rather than more controlled smooth bodybuilding technique.Any thoughts?
well steroids alone does not build muscle,so I would not say Yates row is total crap just because Yates used drugs.
OMG man Yates row wasn't the only row he did ok,then main purpose of rows in Rippetoes program is to generate explosive power not big lats.Again so many ppl forget Starting strength is done for 3-4 months till the person stalls ,it's not like he's saying this is all you need to get a big back.
well, thank You for the answer mate.
Reading through some of the comments and watching the video, it’s clear to me that this video is intended for power lifters and/or the majority of the audience are power lifters. If you’re a bodybuilder, like i am (or trying to be), this isn’t for you.
Just be nice people…
I like SS, I really do, but why do they make the point about cheat reps and then when doing sets on heavier weights proceed to bring their torsos down to meet the bar at the top of the rep?
Michael Boyd There's no way any stranger on the internet would lie about their numbers.
Then look up Chase Lindley's instagram if you don't think that is possible.
Can you imagine how dumb Rip would look, strict rowing 95 lbs like he would have to if he did the real version? lol
Pendlay Row & Yates Row Combined?
Is Rip touching his stomach?? Because it doesnt look like it.
The first video I saw in YT after getting back to Strength Training was Alan Thrall's How to Barbell Row Video..
That girl is strong.
This made my day. A man with a big belly teaching others about exercise. We lived too long on this planet... comet come and get us.
One of those guys that turns what could be a 10 minute class into a 30 minute class. I don't have the patience for him to finish his thoughts
That girl is a beast done all that and just kept going.
I cried when I saw Uncle Rip did the 5th rep with straps. I guess because the only rep you give a fuck about is number fahve.
So, which goes harder stress on lower back, mark ripptone's barbell row of pendlay row ?
