    I first found starting strength as an EMT realizing I couldn't lift people as well as I needed to and I was having back pain from it. I realized I needed to do deadlifts to get my back stronger. I realized that I would come into the gym with back pain and leave the gym without any. Over time I was able to get much stronger and I'm much more capable now as a police officer. Strength matters a lot in the real world.
    From when I started until now:
    Deadlift from 165 to 460(x3), squat from 125 to 405(3x4), overhead press from 65 to 187.5, bench press from 95 to 250 and still having the endurance to best my 500 meter row and other endurance tasks since the academy.
    *10/25/20 updated to current strength numbers.

    Two of my favorite people in the same video together, outstanding.
    Being a retired Army Ranger I've got arthritis in my hips, knees, ankles and lower back. I had doctors tell me to stop lifting weights and especially don't squat. After getting myself into terrible shape I bought Mark's book, Starting Strength, I began following it. Several years later, I'm now 58, I'm still squatting, deadlifting, and the other big lifts, I'm stronger, my legs feel better and I look better on the beach. I now also own the companion book, The Barbell Prescription (Strength Training for Life After 40). Don't listen to your doctor, listen to Mark. Lift heavy, lift often, stay strong, remember, stronger people are harder to kill. RLTW

    This guy is awesome. I used to squat high bar and ended up with femoro patellar tendinitis and SI joint pain on left side ( forward hip tilt ). I tried to figure it out but still same. Today is my second work out with this kind of squat and I love it. I am 6 feet with long femurs also I don’t have the best morphology for squatting but with this Rippetoe squat I never felt my squat so good. The weight seems lighter mostly in the hole and the hip drive is crazy 😜. I would say it’s definitely a posterior chain exercice cause you don’t really feel your quads contracting. However your whole leg working actually. I was ready to drop the squat out but now it’s like a reborn with this. Thanks so much Mr RIPPETOE, you just saved my back and knees 🙏

    • @TrojanManSCP
      @TrojanManSCP 5 лет назад +1

      Private JR - Imagine bending backwards, like a limbo game, but without moving your shoulders/head. Create more curvature in your lower spine, but then hold it. Feels like you’re squeezing your lower back. Then set your abs. Back, then front.
      On the belly, it feels like you’re stretching it top to bottom first, and then setting it side to side.
      If you were doing it wrong before, and then do it right, you should feel ridiculously more stable in the lower torso.
      As with anything, if this still feels weird or unstable, professional coaching is recommended.

It's a crappy feeling not being able to play fight with your sons, and even worse, protect them and your wife if ever needed. I am blessed and motivated but I think a video on injury, disability, powering through etc. would be helpful for the Dads outta the fight.

      @@tyler7992 It's good advice for anyone but the morbidly obese.
      It's easier to gain 20lbs (15 of it muscle) and then lose the fat than it is to lose 20lbs (10 of it muscle) and then gain it back.

    • @tyler7992
      @tyler7992 4 года назад +3

      dafunkmonster yeah if you’re 30% body fat you have no business gaining another 20 lbs. unless you bulk super slow 15 will not be muscle

      @tylerb325 4 года назад

      is it the end of the world if the wrist's not straight? I just dont have the shoulder mobility and see a lot of powerlifters not doing it as well

    • @xantishayde-walker4593
      @xantishayde-walker4593 4 года назад

      @@tylerb325 As Rip says, if you don't have the mobility, you will stretch out and acclimate by practicing the movement. I assume that's in most cases. There are always exceptions. Just do your best to assume the proper positioning he is describing and you will be better off for it. You are less likely to hurt yourself if you do it the right way. If you want to do it in a way he doesn't proscribe, then you do so at your own risk.
