Starting strength put over 30 pounds on my shitty scrawny little body in under a year, and I wasn't even eating as much as prescribed because I sucked at eating enough the first couple of months (used to be borderline anorexic) Mark Rippetoe is the king of no-bullshit teaching and no-bullshit training routines. On Starting Strength my squat went from 95 to 260, bench from 60 to 160, deadlift from 145 to 310, press from 45 to 105 and bent over row from 70 to 165, I didn't do powercleans because I had a really hard time learning them..
Yeah that part didn't really make sense. Of course you're going to have a shitty vertical if you weight 350lbs, your true vertical should be considered the one that you do AFTER losing the weight not before.
SokrasDim it means that you will never be as good as the athlete that was born with a 35 inch vertical, they have far more potential than someone born with an 18 inch one. It's not important train a vertical it's just used as a marker of innate talent
Grizzly Strength, you missed the point. He's saying your true vertical is at your best, athletic weight. If you measure your vertical before losing weight and again after, you just measured two different people.
Jordan Kroell sure, but the point is that the primary movers are not from the arm muscles. The arm muscles in the clean are primarily involved in gripping and minimizing the bar path during the movement. Using the arms to pull the weight up reduces the overall muscle/energy-use efficiency as opposed to using the larger hip and shoulder muscles.
Roberto Villafana don’t forget the legs in that equation hips don’t completely do it all otherwise you’ll end up sending the bar outwards more as opposed to up
Rippetoe is THE MAN! I have learned so much over the years reading his books and heading his advice on programming and training. I have never seen power cleans taught this way and this by far seems to make more sense to me than any other tutorial I have read or watched. Thanks!
first started with Rippetoe's 3x5 routine workout when i was a 6 months rookie over a decade ago. It got me good gains and i gained 40 kgs in squats and deadlifts when doing it. He knows what he's talking about
Great teaching. Almost exactly as I was taught. I think Mark Rippetoe not only explained the steps very well but explained, mechanically, why it is so.
Thanks for a really interesting series, Brett! Really appreciate you putting yourself out there in front of us viewers. Being willing to be criticized by both trainer and viewers says a lot about your character. Well done, sir!
Excellent coaching, I must admit sir, probably the best I've seen on You Tube. Your breakdown of every specific in the movement is precise, but your explanation of not just how ,but why is first class. From a lifters perspective- exceptional! Definitely a thinking lifters coach.
+TheBadGuy I upped my vertical jump from 24 inches to 30 inches in one summer during football training and I did NOT move down or up weight significantly. I went to 154 to156, if that. So yes, he is full of shit (in terms of his vertical jump opinion).
+Josh C What do you mean by the technique aspect? Do you mean jumping technique? Also I was talking about my body weight not the weight that I lifted on the barbell. Also I'm being completely honest about the vertical jump. My body weight did not break 160lbs until I quit football. I did up my vertical to 30.
I have been trying to learn how to powerclean for months. My coach has tried his best, but for some reason this guy made it make sense. I still have a lot of work to do, but I finally get it.

I've seen ALOT of videos on this but this one is by far the best video on how to do the power clean. Even though his form doesn't look perfect towards the end.
If you can't train to be more explosive or increase your vertical leap beyond your genetic predisposition, what does the power clean do? Does it just increase your strength? Or does it increase your explosiveness by that "10-15%" that's possible? Great video. Mark Rippetoe is an excellent instructor and breaks down every movement so succinctly.
You do it so that your power can keep pace with increasing strength. Really only useful for this type of movement though. wont really help for powerlifting.
Justin W It really seems to me like it would help with your vertical leap because of the movement involved, but Rippetoe says you really can't increase your vertical leap by much. It's so confusing!
is this the best free powerclean tutorial on the internet? it might very well be! many thanks to Mark and Brett! keep up the good work with the training serie
@@toddf.packer9394 ya and hes completely wrong on his reasoning why. Just because he skips that step doesn't mean its not right. He literally pulls with his arms the same way they teach. 20:10 some people can fully grip the bar in the rack position. but he can barely touch the bar with the tips of his fingers. I have that same problem. It makes jerking that weight up extra difficult. It's not a big deal unless you're into oly lifting.
Sounds more like a mobility issue in the arms, i.e. you can't get your elbows up high enough. In a proper rack position the wrists aren't bent any more than what you'd be able to without any load.
tiokronor Any tips on how to fix that? I only realised today from seeing the mirror afterwards that I'm slamming the bar against my shoulders when I get under it. I had big bruises on the front of each shoulder after the workout.
You could always stretch. Try something like getting in the rack position with the bar still racked, and have someone gently apply pressure on your arms, forcing your elbows upwards. Or some variation on that, I'm sure that would help if that's your problem and I didn't misunderstand you.
10:29 this is exactly why you teach a lift with an empty barbell. you never know how the trainee will interpret your words or anticipate a command and hurt himself or others or the equipment
Thank you thank you thank you for thoroughly explaining the use and position of contact with the bar. Great video. Have to respect such a humbling movement
