Yes you can say David Goggins has impressive discipline. But he is also mentally ill with demons. He is literally destroying his body and his later years are going to be rough. A balanced life will always be the optimal way to live. This guy talks about running for miles on bone on bone in his knees. This lifestyle doesn't work. When you have kids, you need to spend time with those kids. When you have a wife, you need to put time into your relationship. You need moderation.
I love Goggins, and I think Goggins has helped more people do extreme things and go from fat out of shape bum to fit driven adult than just about anyone else on the internet. Because it is mostly about just mentally wanting it, and continuing when it's hard. He also should not and probably can not be copied.
@@mtwataPeople love to latch on to that to have a reason to not listen to him and feel better about themselves. You dont know the story behind that, why he did what he did. And even so it does not matter, his advice is still very real. You expect more from others than you do yourself.

Dr Mike, Muscular Physiologist :do you understand that if Goggins stopped exercising he would become depressed? (I mean Clinical depression with some hypomanic episodes). Goggins helped me realise that if you 'attack' the body - it somehow "cures" the depression for the day...and you survive that day, then you have to do it again the following day. Once, you' re 3-6 months in you can even reduce to 3 to 4 days per week & combine it with learning how your mind works...and you still get relief. This is the only thing to ever help keep my clinical depression away and I've tried Antidepressants as far back as 2008 to no f*ck*ng avail of course. So, yes Muscular Mike David has a form of depressin that contains some hypomanic episodes (you can say mild bipolar but with severe Major depression).
I can't wrap my mind around his lifestyle. I did a 22-year career in the military (Air Force & Army) and David treats every day like he's in the hardest days of boot camp in Hades and cranked up to eleven - but the boot camp nightmare NEVER ENDS! 😰

I tried David's Routine a couple of times "just for fun" and always got seriously sick. Sick like hell. Sick like hospitalized. I have no clue how that guy did it. A true inspiration.

Just give your body enough time to recover, then keep doing it annd your body will adapt. After a lifetime of couch-potato-ing, my first 2 weeks of serious weight training led to me actually having fevers and needed as many rest days as workout days. My first 2 years of serious running my shins and feet kept hurting and hurting, until one day my bones are finally strong enough and They don’t hurt anymore. I can physically see my feet getting thicker and buffer. It takes time.
Ya he was in the military before. Not sure which branch and all but it was gruesome training. He thrived through because he enjoyed the pain and some help of genetics. But either way he built up to that point.
@@piecekeeps1712 Goggins was in the Navy. The Navy SEALs to be specific, which as you probably know is widely considered the most mentally challenging and physically demanding group of the military to get into.
I like that "doesn't mumble" is something to be respected. Am I in good shape? No. Am I basically a human sized piece of existential excrement? Yes. Are those respectful qualities to have? No. BUT... Do I mumble? No. Thank you.
I listened to his book and because of all his ultra marathon stuff, he could barely walk. APPARENTLY the insane stretching routine helped him to actually work through it all.
Yeah, in his book he tells us how he dropped out of a race and was slowly decaying and dying because he hasn't been stretching prior. I can understand why he has been stretching so religiously since then.
@@windmacher I tried stretching with actual investigation and... if you want the most results out of it, you will have to stretch for atleast 1 hour, it's like a normal workout but with 30s rests, I stopped doing it and even now I still can do a lot of weird stuff I learnt.😂
His insane genetics and work ethic are what is enabling him to do what he does. If your a regular person you shouldn't try to reicate anything he does.
David Goggins may not be the go to guy for technical elements of training but he is absolutely the go to guy for the mental elements of perseverance and toughness.

Goggins inspired me to lose over 30 kilos of fat, get very lean, and see my abs - at 53 years young. Now 55 years, lean around the year. As he says: ”motivation is bullshit, it comes and goes. You need to have drive”.

Motivation is usally short lived, it often provides a temporary surge of energy or inspiration that can fade away quickly. Think of it as a spark that ignites your desire to act, but once that spark diminishes, you might find yourself back to square one. In contrast, drive is more like a habit you cultivate over time. It’s built through consistent effort and commitment, whether in studying, exercising, or any other pursuit. Once you establish that habit, drive keeps you going even when enthusiasm wanes or obstacles arise. It’s about pushing through discomfort and maintaining focus, making it a more reliable force in achieving long-term goals. building a good habit on anything is where majority of people struggle, soon as discomfort comes along, they give up because that's the easy way out. Sadly, easy way out is usually what will make life harder later on.
@@aarnehalen1686motivation- I’m pumped to do this, something has put me in the state of mind or feel more strongly to put feet to pavement. Drive(honestly the word used should have been [Dedication])- this is the 5th day in a row I’ve been doing cardio and this sucks, it makes me feel like I’m dying after 5 minutes, but I’m going too anyway because it’s good for my health. What's strange, and psychologically interesting, is the recognition that if sleeping required effort (yet required exactly the same time and had exactly the same effects) these people would be championing its benefits.

Thank you for your videos. My previous coach worked me out so much in cardio that I was never losing any fat weight. I kept working hard but was so exhausted from the workouts that I could not recover properly AND I remained fat even though I could run 13miles. Watching your videos helped me realize that a plan that focuses on a good diet, sleep, stretching, and exercise but above all CONSISTENCY is the way to go. Now I have only lost 5 pounds in the last 1.5months but my body composition is radically different. So THANK YOU! You helped me realize a better way to train.
Eet eggs, meat a bit fruit creece yoghurt 10%, and you will see howzfast you drop weight. Still eat enough what you normally do. And ofcourse few times a week training. Took me 2 weeks to adapt to this, now my body mainly use fat as fuel.
I never understood the waking up so early thing. Any doctor will tell you how important sleep is for recovery, longevity, mental health, etc… In the end waking up super early just means you have to go to bed early. I have to wake up at 4am due to work so I’m in bed by 8 so I can get 7-8 hours of sleep. It’s no different than someone waking up at 7 and going to bed at 11. It’s such a weird flex when you think about it.
I agree the with the wtf are you flexing part for but being proud that your circadian rhythm is in line with how you feel the best is something to aspire to and not many people understand how important it is.
It borderline triggers me too, and that's because the main thing that drove me to get my "slight" anxiety checked out, only to realize just how bad I was in it's throes and start getting psychiatric help for it, was the impact in sleep quality: I was unable to have good quality sleep for months on end, waking up at some random point at night and not being able to stop my mind/heart until at least 2 hours after...sometimes just falling asleep before having to start my day, it was awful and it was eating away at me. Only in fixing that and being able to get consistent 7 hour + has let me do other things, like have the mental toughness to push myself physically and improve my health, and just naturally not have crazy comfort food cravings I get when I'm sleep deprived. I am instantly tempted to throw out any advice coming from people who say some variation of "3-4am wake up time cause it's the only way to really get things done" or some other hustle/grindset bs mentality. It's very different to say that than to say "hey, don't be afraid to try different things and if you find something that works for you and is healthy and sustainable, go for it, even if it means {weird hours}". I do wake up once a week early to exercise, specifically at 5 am to be able to play tennis from 6-8am here in the desert heat and not shrivel away, but it is that, something once a week I do for something I find incredibly rewarding, and I usually nap after I'm back, showered and had a meal to be able to keep up for the rest of the day with my family.
Goggins is probably one of those genetic freaks who don't need as much sleep as others. They do exist and I have seen estimations to be about 1% of population
I'm a noob (working out properly for about 3 months) and I've basically just been using Dr. Mike as my own personal trainer. When I have questions about how to properly do this or that, I just watch how he does it and take his advice. As recently as 5-10 years ago, this level of extensive and detailed science-based expertise simply wasn't available to the average joe. THANK YOU, MIKE!!!
Some people deal with their inner demons by eating, alcohol, drugs, etc. David is dealing with them with exercise. Out of all of the options I had mentioned, not many choose the exercise route, so good on him 👍
He's still running from himself and his problems, and abusing his body to do it. It comes in a more acceptable form to the public eye, but he's just another self destructive individual with a terrible lifestyle. Good for him in his previous accomplishments and all that, but if people are being honest they can see those have only been the base of something that became detrimental over time and all of the praise or tiptoeing around stating the obvious that fearful content creators and professionals do is just enablement for someone with serious issues.

David Goggins turned my life around. Last November, I was 250lbs obese, health issues, my life in shambles, drowning in misery. I needed something to turn my life around, then I listened to Goggins and I started running. If anyone is going to change my life, it will be up to me. Last November, I can barely do a mile, now I run 5K twice a wk and working on reaching my first 6 mile run eventually to my first 10K. I've lost 70lbs, and my health problems are in remission. I don't do David Goggin's crazy workout routine, he does his and I do mine. I do my own strength training and 10 min stretches. However, I do listen to him instead of music every time I workout, knowing that It's possible to push a little harder, farther, and faster.
David Goggins is/was military. Both of my brothers were also in the military. Everything they do is timed. They are up before the sun and work into the night. I believe he has carried that military mentality into his body transformation. He is the goat, for motivation and perseverance. Us regular peons just take what we can handle. And your commentary brings it back to earth. As a newbie to fitness, I appreciate you both.💪🏾🧡
Goggins got me into running 5 years ago, I am thankful. It was never about losing weight, it was about the mental training. Definitely helped all aspects of my life

Great video! Doesn't just bash Goggins like some other bodybuilders, but instead explains why he does it and what might be more suitable/optimal for your own goals. Respect
Jeff Cavaliere did a breakdown of Goggins' training recently and he made a point that many people overlook: Goggins is an endurance athlete. His training and activities reflect that. Dr Mike is bang on the money in saying most people just need to use him for inspiration, and there are elements of his training to incorporate, but he's in the most elite group of people when it comes to physical fitness. He doesn't train for aesthetics, he trains to be able to keep going, and have a strong enough mind to get him through those events. His timings and placements for ultra events are published online for anyone who wants to see them, including multiple Badwater events. It's important context when watching his social media videos, especially if your goal is to run 10km or to build muscle.
@@MaduagwuMichaelHe won Badwater, notoriously known as the most miserable Ultra in the world. We would go for runs and he could legitimately maintain a 6 minute mile while holding a full conversation for 10+ miles. He’s pretty damn good at running.
@@DisDatK9 he's good but not excellent in extreme endurance events which have low competitiveness in the first place. Put him in the Boston marathon and he's not finishing in the top 1000.
“Can’t hurt me” got me back into fitness 4 years ago during the pandemic. I’ve run multiple 35 mile and 50 mile ultras since and weight lift every day. His methods might be a little unhinged but he’s changed so many lives in the process!
@@Goiaba308 no definitely not suddenly. I began with walking, then running one mile, then two miles and so on. To be injury free, it should be a verrrrrry slow process. It’s about strengthening your joints, body and mind for the long run 🙌

I’ve said this many times: a key point in Goggins is that he serves as an example of peek willpower and effort, purely to inspire us to push our own limits. The point was never to compete with him but compete with ourselves.

His stretches are necessary, without them he was literally shrinking from his muscles being constantly contracted. He was basically a walking cramp and stretching allows him to maintain this amount of physical activity with the least amount of damage
Goggins literally tells people “I’m not telling you to go break yourself off.” He doesn’t advocate anyone train like he does, but he does advocate for people to push themselves beyond their self perceived and self imposed limits. He trains for mindset, not for physical gains and optimal growth. Gotta analyze him through the correct lens.
Trading for mindset and optimally is still the best way to go 🤔 Torturing yourself for torture’s sake is just going to put unnecessary wear and tear on your body that didn’t need to happen to get the results you want.
Sure but if many, MANY people analyse him through the “incorrect lens”, the burden is on him to make it easier for people to know he doesn’t advocate for a suicidal level of training.
Goggins probably shouldn’t be listened to as a lifestyle influencer/self-help guru beyond being inspired by his perseverance the way a natty lifter could be inspired by an enhanced pro. His methods and lifestyle are completely insane and not replicable for the average person. It’s pretty much a symptom of deeper psychological issues and putting it on a pedestal is socially wrong, IMO. Equivalent of being inspired by the perseverance of anorexics and other body dysmorphia sufferers for indulging in it as a lifestyle rather than seeking appropriate psychological help. The only difference here is that we view exercise as a Good, so excess is viewed as hard work and discipline rather than compulsive self-abuse.
Goggins has said most should not do what he does. He knows he is crazy, he knows it's excessive and has only ever actually advocated for people to stop procrastinating or limiting themselves. But of course there are lots of people who don't want to think for themselves and do the hard work of self experimentation to find what works for them. They just want results now and look at copying other "successful" people.
Everything david goggins does is for the purpose of strengthening his mind. Thats where he finds his meaning in life. Its easy to just say hes mentally ill and thats why he does all this crazy stuff, but you're missing the point of it all.
@@Repienk People with pathologies rationalise pathological behaviour. His normal is not “normal”. If you saw his behaviour in a loved one and saw how it impacted their capacity to engage with life, sacrificing sleep/work for compulsive need to perform ritual behaviour, you would instantly recognise it as unhealthy. I literally said people shouldn’t listen to him with regard to why he does this. You would not listen to a compulsive eater rationalise how becoming the fattest guy alive is strengthening for the soul because it’s hard. If you want to take meaning/inspiration from him, then by all means, that’s your subjective wont. I’m just saying that any advice or lifestyle decisions made based on what he’s saying or doing need taking with a huge pinch of salt, because we’re not him and 99.999% of the time it’s not gonna go that way for us.

I'm currently 280 pounds run 3 miles every day at 3 am and walk 3 more miles. Lift 3x a week and ride my bike 100 miles in a month. I'm burning roughly 2k active calories a day. I went from 416 pounds to 280 pounds in 6 months.
3 am is a bad idea. Sleep is king. Also, every day jogging not nevessary, too much stress on knees. Also, to continue your weight loss, get your diet on point, crucial. Protein evey meal, Greek yogurt, nuts, eggs, turkey chicken, albacore, butter. No bread, pasta, potatoes, chips, deserts, cereal, soda.
@GUITARTIME2024 diets pretty good. 3am is when I'm able to do it. Before I have to get kids up for school and deal with the other kids for the day. Wife works nights so I do it at 3am so I can deal my responsibilities during the day. I do protein shakes for breakfast tuna for lunch and usually chicken and rice for dinner. I got to bed between 8-9 at night. So I'm getting between 6 and 7 hours of sleep each night.
Ultra-running is more about mental toughness and self discipline than physical fitness. His whole routine is built around strengthening the mind to overcome the bodies weakness. I ran marathons and ultras for nine years. I did crazy stuff, but nothing like Goggins. Probably the craziest things I did to strengthen my mind were back to back long runs. 29 miles on Saturday, doing laps of a park that was only 3/4 of a mile per lap. Then I did another 29 miles in that same park on Sunday.

I just can't buy into it, I'm not American , even as a kid when I heard all the go hard stuff to work and play - squash game at 3am in morning. Seemed like another planet to me . Same as I dislike tiger/helicopter parents planning 10 extra activities a week for their prodigy kids. Would they go back in time and steal their own childhood the same way . Ie I myself need quiet space and time to be creative, have reflection and energy. I always think people who fill their waking day with work, endless activities don't like themselves and it's an escape mechanism . To be fair he does lots of cardio , so lots of time to free form thinking
David Goggins inspires me. He’s a beast. I get motivated to try harder when I listen to him, even if I don’t necessarily think he’s doing everything the ideal way.
Kinda difficult to say anything about Goggins stuff. Mikes expression after some of Goggins statements is hilarious and just about all one can do. ”Well 🤷♂️” 😆
He's fearful of public backlash from stating the truth, like a politician. Goggins is a junky whose drug of choice is ultimately masked self abuse fueled by ego, and while that has brought about many accomplishments and much ignorant praise, at the end of the day he's a damaged individual like any other only with a massive ego to fuel his self harm rather than a chemical substance dependency.
My 14 mile round trip bike commute only burns ~400 to 500 calories a day. I didn't start losing weight until this year when I added 10k steps a day and started taking my diet seriously.
@@otter1942 I feel better and have an easier time losing weight when I walk and cycle. Try and walk throughout the day for my NEAT. I lift 2-3 times a week, but was going to try more over the winter
As someone who struggled with self discipline when it comes to sport, I found that this insane motivation porn from the David Gogginses of the world gives you a quick boost of energy and drive but, ultimately, is not sustainable. You get all hyped in the hopes to reinvent yourself and compensate for all the years of laziness and then return to your old habits, unable to live to your new ultra high standards. It’s only when I started to train just the right amount, like it’s recommended here on RP, I was able to actually stick to my routine and see some progress.
Say what you want to say about Goggins, but this man help me get out of a really bad depression. I end up running 14 miles without stopping in 2 months without any prior training or knowledge. So for that reason I’ll always be thankful. Like always love your vids !!
Same. That being said goggins is a good advocate for mental toughness and not making excuses. When it comes to training for sports or athletics, he is out of his league.
Such a good point made there by Dr. Mike in terms of switching up the modality for cardio training. I ran every day, sometimes twice, last december, 8km on average. I felt so much pain eventually, and these days I can go for a run 2 times a week because I cannot bear the pain more frequently than that.
Read his two books, the guy is working through some heavy stuff from his past, I hope he works through it before he runs himself into the ground permanently. It's already caused a host of health issues and suffering physically and mentally...but he just keeps going.
@@AEVsteak as someone who has chronic pain (vision issues) I can attest that a greater stress makes pushing yourself in the gym WAY easier... only I'm not built like Goggins so got a long term cartilage issue in my knees from ignoring pain
@@rustneversleeps85 he's so lucky to not be crippled by injury, he said in an interview he pushed through injuries and somehow it works out. For my knees if I do nothing it hurts more so maybe it's like that for him just x10000
Dr Mike explaining the effects overtraining was quite surprising. Many people talk about overtraining, but i personally only have a vague idea of what it looks and feels like. I'd love a video explaining it in more detail with possible timeframes, indicators, how it progresses, connection to nutrition and of course the (semi-)permanent effects of it. >There's a three year old video on fatigue indicators that goes in that direction but doesn't directly engage with overtraining.

But when you look at what he does everyday as a whole to the point of sacrificing sleep to do stretches for two hours etc to me it shows a mental weakness in himself more than a mental strength? Almost like he cant stop himself. Who knows what demons await him on a rest day lol

Goggins gave me the inspiration to not quit working out as I have done many times since I was last serious 8 years ago. But discovering this channel here, along with Lean Beef Patty and "Strong with Kelly" helped me so much more than the trainers I spent money on. I know it has only been since end of April, but so far only 1 small injury. No real weight loss despite the calorie counting and weighting the food, but I did get a lot stronger. Gym 3x a week since June, up from 2 (plus hiking)
@@samiiromaar no real fat loss is what I should have said. For all intent and purposes, I am down 2 pounds but I can fit in some shirts I previously couldnt. I may habe lost 4-6 inches around the stomach area. I still need to lose a lot of fat though as I am only 5'6" and still weight 214. When I was in better shape years ago I was 162. I am hoping for 170-180 this time.
I love Strong with Kelly, she really opened my eyes to diversifying my training. LBP is like the person I wish I could go to the gym with but Kelly is the one who is really goals. Summer Fun Fitness is one of my inspirations for calisthenics if you want to check her out, I’m loving the functional strength gains from bodyweight exercises. @@amaanhussain3094 she is very down to earth and a good sense of humor. I like her kitchen cooking videos where she'll attempt to make "healthier" versions of every day food...eg, healthier rice krispies square with more protein. She has the energy level of an adhd squirrel in some videos, but when she's in the gym, she goes beast mode hard and really focused. She was also very open about her body dysmorphia as a teen and that courage makes her very endearing.
Started following David goggins awhile ago. Been running miles and lifting weights for hours. Lost 30lbs while not dieting, gaining lean muscle @ 49yrs old. Got blood test done and healthy like a new born baby.
Unpopular opinion David Goggins is addicted to working out due to his self-hatred and fear of being fat and lazy again. And maybe we shouldn't be listening to him for health advice. I will say this,the extreme people accomplish more. But for us average guys who just wanna have a healthy and balanced life a normal and consistent amount of exercise is perfect.
Right-on. When I see this guy, all I see is a hyper extreme lifestyle that is not sustainable. The w/o routine he utilizes would be fine for somebody who doesn't have a 40hr a week job. Getting up at 3am to start your routine, stretching for 2 hours a day, a "light" cardio day is running 7 miles....!?! When I see this guy, all I see is somebody running away from something very troubling. Its very easy to just look at the "surface" this guy is showing the world and think everything is alright and that "hes got it figured out, and I need to be like him" Nope. This is classic escapism behavior. He has become very successful with the motivational career he made for himself but he is definitely fighting demons and considering this extreme unsustainable lifestyle he is doing and promoting, all is not so well with Mr. Goggins.
@rpols22 Goggins has a full time job, he even talked about how people go after him talking about how they would do same shit if they didn't have job like him. But he said he actuallt has full time job
Another thing to remember about Goggins is he has literally no cartilage in his knees. Which is supremely impressive that he can still run like he does but also a warning sign that your body will break down with overuse.

Yes you can say David Goggins has impressive discipline. But he is also mentally ill with demons. He is literally destroying his body and his later years are going to be rough. A balanced life will always be the optimal way to live. This guy talks about running for miles on bone on bone in his knees. This lifestyle doesn't work. I love Goggins, and I think Goggins has helped more people do extreme things and go from fat out of shape bum to fit driven adult than just about anyone else on the internet. Because it is mostly about just mentally wanting it, and continuing when it's hard. He also should not and probably can not be copied.

Dr Mike, Muscular Physiologist :do you understand that if Goggins stopped exercising he would become depressed? (I mean Clinical depression with some hypomanic episodes). Goggins helped me realise that if you 'attack' the body - it somehow "cures" the depression for the day...and you survive that day, then you have to do it again the following day. Once, you' re 3-6 months in you can even reduce to 3 to 4 days per week & combine it with learning how your mind works...and you still get relief. This is the only thing to ever help keep my clinical depression away and I've tried Antidepressants as far back as 2008 to no f*ck*ng avail of course. So, yes Muscular Mike David has a form of depressin that contains some hypomanic episodes (you can say mild bipolar but with severe Major depression).

Just give your body enough time to recover, then keep doing it annd your body will adapt. After a lifetime of couch-potato-ing, my first 2 weeks of serious weight training led to me actually having fevers and needed as many rest days as workout days. My first 2 years of serious running my shins and feet kept hurting and hurting, until one day my bones are finally strong enough and They don’t hurt anymore. I can physically see my feet getting thicker and buffer. It takes time.
Ya he was in the military before. Not sure which branch and all but it was gruesome training. He thrived through because he enjoyed the pain and some help of genetics. But either way he built up to that point.

I listened to his book and because of all his ultra marathon stuff, he could barely walk. APPARENTLY the insane stretching routine helped him to actually work through it all.
Yeah, in his book he tells us how he dropped out of a race and was slowly decaying and dying because he hasn't been stretching prior. I can understand why he has been stretching so religiously since then.

I tried stretching with actual investigation and... if you want the most results out of it, you will have to stretch for atleast 1 hour, it's like a normal workout but with 30s rests, I stopped doing it and even now I still can do a lot of weird stuff I learnt.😂

Goggins inspired me to lose over 30 kilos of fat, get very lean, and see my abs - at 53 years young. Now 55 years, lean around the year. As he says: ”motivation is bullshit, it comes and goes. You need to have drive”.

Thank you for your videos. My previous coach worked me out so much in cardio that I was never losing any fat weight. I kept working hard but was so exhausted from the workouts that I could not recover properly AND I remained fat even though I could run 13miles. Watching your videos helped me realize that a plan that focuses on a good diet, sleep, stretching, and exercise but above all CONSISTENCY is the way to go. Now I have only lost 5 pounds in the last 1.5months but my body composition is radically different. So THANK YOU! You helped me realize a better way to train.
Eet eggs, meat a bit fruit creece yoghurt 10%, and you will see howzfast you drop weight. Still eat enough what you normally do. And ofcourse few times a week training.
Took me 2 weeks to adapt to this, now my body mainly use fat as fuel.
I never understood the waking up so early thing. Any doctor will tell you how important sleep is for recovery, longevity, mental health, etc… In the end waking up super early just means you have to go to bed early.
I have to wake up at 4am due to work so I’m in bed by 8 so I can get 7-8 hours of sleep. It’s no different than someone waking up at 7 and going to bed at 11. It’s such a weird flex when you think about it.

Most people waste the hours of 9-11pm, so shifting your day back to 5am-9pm helps productivity/focus.
I agree the with the wtf are you flexing part for but being proud that your circadian rhythm is in line with how you feel the best is something to aspire to and not many people understand how important it is.
It borderline triggers me too, and that's because the main thing that drove me to get my "slight" anxiety checked out, only to realize just how bad I was in it's throes and start getting psychiatric help for it, was the impact in sleep quality: I was unable to have good quality sleep for months on end, waking up at some random point at night and not being able to stop my mind/heart until at least 2 hours after...sometimes just falling asleep before having to start my day, it was awful and it was eating away at me. Only in fixing that and being able to get consistent 7 hour + has let me do other things, like have the mental toughness to push myself physically and improve my health, and just naturally not have crazy comfort food cravings I get when I'm sleep deprived. I am instantly tempted to throw out any advice coming from people who say some variation of "3-4am wake up time cause it's the only way to really get things done" or some other hustle/grindset bs mentality. It's very different to say that than to say "hey, don't be afraid to try different things and if you find something that works for you and is healthy and sustainable, go for it, even if it means {weird hours}".
I do wake up once a week early to exercise, specifically at 5 am to be able to play tennis from 6-8am here in the desert heat and not shrivel away, but it is that, something once a week I do for something I find incredibly rewarding, and I usually nap after I'm back, showered and had a meal to be able to keep up for the rest of the day with my family.
Goggins is probably one of those genetic freaks who don't need as much sleep as others. They do exist and I have seen estimations to be about 1% of population
I'm a noob (working out properly for about 3 months) and I've basically just been using Dr. Mike as my own personal trainer. When I have questions about how to properly do this or that, I just watch how he does it and take his advice. As recently as 5-10 years ago, this level of extensive and detailed science-based expertise simply wasn't available to the average joe. THANK YOU, MIKE!!!

David Goggins turned my life around. Last November, I was 250lbs obese, health issues, my life in shambles, drowning in misery. I needed something to turn my life around, then I listened to Goggins and I started running. If anyone is going to change my life, it will be up to me. Last November, I can barely do a mile, now I run 5K twice a wk and working on reaching my first 6 mile run eventually to my first 10K. I've lost 70lbs, and my health problems are in remission. I don't do David Goggin's crazy workout routine, he does his and I do mine. I do my own strength training and 10 min stretches. However, I do listen to him instead of music every time I workout, knowing that It's possible to push a little harder, farther, and faster.

David Goggins is/was military. Both of my brothers were also in the military. Everything they do is timed. They are up before the sun and work into the night. I believe he has carried that military mentality into his body transformation. He is the goat, for motivation and perseverance. Us regular peons just take what we can handle. Jeff Cavaliere did a breakdown of Goggins' training recently and he made a point that many people overlook: Goggins is an endurance athlete. His training and activities reflect that. Dr Mike is bang on the money in saying most people just need to use him for inspiration, and there are elements of his training to incorporate, but he's in the most elite group of people when it comes to physical fitness. He doesn't train for aesthetics, he trains to be able to keep going, and have a strong enough mind to get him through those events. His timings and placements for ultra events are published online for anyone who wants to see them, including multiple Badwater events. It's important context when watching his social media videos, especially if your goal is to run 10km or to build muscle.
Goggins got there somehow. His message is anyone can get where they want if they put their mind to it.

“Can’t hurt me” got me back into fitness 4 years ago during the pandemic. I’ve run multiple 35 mile and 50 mile ultras since and weight lift every day. His methods might be a little unhinged but he’s changed so many lives in the process!

I’ve said this many times: a key point in Goggins is that he serves as an example of peek willpower and effort, purely to inspire us to push our own limits. The point was never to compete with him but compete with ourselves.

His stretches are necessary, without them he was literally shrinking from his muscles being constantly contracted. He was basically a walking cramp and stretching allows him to maintain this amount of physical activity with the least amount of damage

Then again, this is a review from a sport scientist. The critique is from a physical perspective and not a psychological view.

Goggins probably shouldn’t be listened to as a lifestyle influencer/self-help guru beyond being inspired by his perseverance the way a natty lifter could be inspired by an enhanced pro. His methods and lifestyle are completely insane and not replicable for the average person.
It’s pretty much a symptom of deeper psychological issues and putting it on a pedestal is socially wrong, IMO. Equivalent of being inspired by the perseverance of anorexics and other body dysmorphia sufferers for indulging in it as a lifestyle rather than seeking appropriate psychological help. The only difference here is that we view exercise as a Good, so excess is viewed as hard work and discipline rather than compulsive self-abuse.

If you saw his behaviour in a loved one and saw how it impacted their capacity to engage with life, sacrificing sleep/work for compulsive need to perform ritual behaviour, you would instantly recognise it as unhealthy.
I literally said people shouldn’t listen to him with regard to why he does this. You would not listen to a compulsive eater rationalise how becoming the fattest guy alive is strengthening for the soul because it’s hard.

I'm currently 280 pounds run 3 miles every day at 3 am and walk 3 more miles. Lift 3x a week and ride my bike 100 miles in a month. I'm burning roughly 2k active calories a day. I went from 416 pounds to 280 pounds in 6 months.

3 am is a bad idea. Sleep is king. Also, every day jogging not nevessary, too much stress on knees. Also, to continue your weight loss, get your diet on point, crucial. Protein evey meal, Greek yogurt, nuts, eggs, turkey chicken, albacore, butter. No bread, pasta, potatoes, chips, deserts, cereal, soda.

Wife works nights so I do it at 3am so I can deal my responsibilities during the day. I do protein shakes for breakfast tuna for lunch and usually chicken and rice for dinner. I got to bed between 8-9 at night. So I'm getting between 6 and 7 hours of sleep each night.

Goggins isn’t about muscle hypertrophy, he is about mental hypertrophy.
Ultra-running is more about mental toughness and self discipline than physical fitness. His whole routine is built around strengthening the mind to overcome the bodies weakness.
I ran marathons and ultras for nine years. I did crazy stuff, but nothing like Goggins. Probably the craziest things I did to strengthen my mind were back to back long runs. 29 miles on Saturday, doing laps of a park that was only 3/4 of a mile per lap. Then I did another 29 miles in that same park on Sunday.

I just can't buy into it, I'm not American , even as a kid when I heard all the go hard stuff to work and play - squash game at 3am in morning. Seemed like another planet to me . Same as I dislike tiger/helicopter parents planning 10 extra activities a week for their prodigy kids. Would they go back in time and steal their own childhood the same way . Ie I myself need quiet space and time to be creative, have reflection and energy. I always think people who fill their waking day with work, endless activities don't like themselves and it's an escape mechanism . To be fair he does lots of cardio , so lots of time to free form thinking

My 14 mile round trip bike commute only burns ~400 to 500 calories a day. I didn't start losing weight until this year when I added 10k steps a day and started taking my diet seriously.

I lift 2-3 times a week, but was going to try more over the winter
14 miles of bike: 450 calories. 1 hour of heavy bag and mitt work: 1000 calories. I know which one I enjoy more.
As someone who struggled with self discipline when it comes to sport, I found that this insane motivation porn from the David Gogginses of the world gives you a quick boost of energy and drive but, ultimately, is not sustainable. You get all hyped in the hopes to reinvent yourself and compensate for all the years of laziness and then return to your old habits, unable to live to your new ultra high standards. It’s only when I started to train just the right amount, like it’s recommended here on RP, I was able to actually stick to my routine and see some progress.

Say what you want to say about Goggins, but this man help me get out of a really bad depression. I end up running 14 miles without stopping in 2 months without any prior training or knowledge. So for that reason I’ll always be thankful. Like always love your vids !!
Same. That being said goggins is a good advocate for mental toughness and not making excuses. When it comes to training for sports or athletics, he is out of his league.
Such a good point made there by Dr. Mike in terms of switching up the modality for cardio training. I ran every day, sometimes twice, last december, 8km on average. I felt so much pain eventually, and these days I can go for a run 2 times a week because I cannot bear the pain more frequently than that.

Read his two books, the guy is working through some heavy stuff from his past, I hope he works through it before he runs himself into the ground permanently. It's already caused a host of health issues and suffering physically and mentally...but he just keeps going.

Dr Mike explaining the effects overtraining was quite surprising. Many people talk about overtraining, but i personally only have a vague idea of what it looks and feels like. I'd love a video explaining it in more detail with possible timeframes, indicators, how it progresses, connection to nutrition and of course the (semi-)permanent effects of it. >There's a three year old video on fatigue indicators that goes in that direction but doesn't directly engage with overtraining.

Goggins gave me the inspiration to not quit working out as I have done many times since I was last serious 8 years ago.
But discovering this channel here, along with Lean Beef Patty and "Strong with Kelly" helped me so much more than the trainers I spent money on.
I know it has only been since end of April, but so far only 1 small injury. No real weight loss despite the calorie counting and weighting the food, but I did get a lot stronger.
Gym 3x a week since June, up from 2 (plus hiking)

@@samiiromaar no real fat loss is what I should have said. For all intent and purposes, I am down 2 pounds but I can fit in some shirts I previously couldnt. I may habe lost 4-6 inches around the stomach area. I still need to lose a lot of fat though as I am only 5'6" and still weight 214.
When I was in better shape years ago I was 162.
I am hoping for 170-180 this time.
I love Strong with Kelly, she really opened my eyes to diversifying my training. LBP is like the person I wish I could go to the gym with but Kelly is the one who is really goals.

I like her kitchen cooking videos where she'll attempt to make "healthier" versions of every day food...eg, healthier rice krispies square with more protein. She has the energy level of an adhd squirrel in some videos, but when she's in the gym, she goes beast mode hard and really focused. She was also very open about her body dysmorphia as a teen and that courage makes her very endearing.

Started following David goggins awhile ago. Been running miles and lifting weights for hours. Lost 30lbs while not dieting, gaining lean muscle @ 49yrs old. Got blood test done and healthy like a new born baby.
Unpopular opinion David Goggins is addicted to working out due to his self-hatred and fear of being fat and lazy again. And maybe we shouldn't be listening to him for health advice. I will say this,the extreme people accomplish more. But for us average guys who just wanna have a healthy and balanced life a normal and consistent amount of exercise is perfect.
Right-on. When I see this guy, all I see is a hyper extreme lifestyle that is not sustainable. The w/o routine he utilizes would be fine for somebody who doesn't have a 40hr a week job. Getting up at 3am to start your routine, stretching for 2 hours a day, a "light" cardio day is running 7 miles....!?!
When I see this guy, all I see is somebody running away from something very troubling. Its very easy to just look at the "surface" this guy is showing the world and think everything is alright and that "hes got it figured out, and I need to be like him" Nope. This is classic escapism behavior.
He has become very successful with the motivational career he made for himself but he is definitely fighting demons and considering this extreme unsustainable lifestyle he is doing and promoting, all is not so well with Mr. Goggins.

Another thing to remember about Goggins is he has literally no cartilage in his knees. Which is supremely impressive that he can still run like he does but also a warning sign that your body will break down with overuse.

His condition is so bad he physically can’t, it’s interrupted his daily life so much he can’t hold a normal job, so he did the one thing that would allow him to continue this lifestyle which is to become a personality and profit off of it.
