Wonderful to feature Johnny Matthis today. He’s definitely in a class by himself. Barbra Streisand said it best: “There are a number of good singers, a smaller handful of truly great singers, and then there's Johnny Mathis.” Merry Christmas to you and yours, Adam!

Great interview. Perfect for the season. Another song that fits the occasion that I'll bet most of you have either never heard of or had forgotten is "Scarlet Ribbons", by Jim Reeves. Happy Holidays all.
Jim had such a warm voice. My best freind I worked with for over 30 years would cry every time he heard that song by Jim. My friend passed away several years ago but thanks for bringing back the memory’s
Wow, prof… Really mean it? Wow! You’ve obviously gained the respect of some very great people! This was a wonderful interview. Even us old Hardcore rock and rollers can appreciate greatness in a different genre. Thanks for this one… And actually all of them. You are a talent yourself! Merry Christmas!
Shame on you, PoR. You made this old lady cry before noon on Xmas day. Back in my teen years, I had 3 go-to singers, Johnny Mathias, Johnie Ray, and Nat King Cole. Their music is so comforting and it provided me with an escape from my home drama. Thank you for this wonderful holiday present.
I'm a fan of all the classic rock acts, but I will stop dead in my tracks to sing along with with a Johnny Mathis song. Every. Single. Time. What a special interview!! Thank you and Merry Christmas!!
What a fantastic interview. Johnny Mathis transcends all genres. His music is timeless, and yet, he sits there and is so humble. Much of my early childhood was set to music like this, on the radio. This takes me back to a time when Christmas was a joy, not so much any more. During that time there were certain vocalists that did not sound anyone else. Nat Cole, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, and so many others, who's names I fail to recall right now. It was such a pleasure to see this video of a man who I only knew about through the radio or TV. Thanks so much. Merry Christmas. ;-)
Kindness proceeds the genius. Mr. Mathis is an example of true humility and a kind gentlemen - so missing in the current entertainment climate. I was fortunate to travel with him on a flight from Las Vegas to L.A. He was kind, reserve and gracious. A true product of his family and healthy childhood environment. We are blessed to have him in our presence with his timeless and incomparable voice.
The man is a national treasure. 87 and still kicking. His voice still sounds great and you can tell he genuinely loves what he does. Great interview. Thanks, Professor!
So glad Adam is able to get these interviews on tape. Johnny is a voice of the ages, but getting things like Sondheim being irritated and someone tapping him on the back so is regular folks can sing it to is just an amazing snapshot of the past.
His genuine sweetness just comes through, and his stories are wonderful. Thank you Professor I am going to show this to my mum and neighbour who are great fans of him.
I grew up in the Richmond District in San Francisco in the 50’s and 60’s. My best friend and her sister would bake Christmas cookies and take them to the Mathis house every year. Mr and Mrs Mathis were the kindest and sweetest people. So, it warms my heart to watch your wonderful episode with John speaking so lovingly about his parents! Merry Christmas! 🎄
You must have lived near my father. He sang in the choir, and was also on the track team with Johnny. From 1950-1956 he lived (with parents and brother) at 215 El Camino Del Mar, up near the entrance to the Presidio.
OMG!! What an amazing gentleman and soul Mr. Mathis is! I am 67 years young and was always more of a Rock'n'Roll fan in my youth but had listened to some of Johnny Mathis' songs along the way and loved his voice. Your interview with him is OUTSTANDING!! I will now look for and listen to his recordings! Thank You! Thank You! Happy Holidays! This interview is one of the best Christmas presents I could have!!! PEACE OUT ✌ ☮ 🕊 ✌
I've always loved Johnny's voice. His music is something that will go on for generations, and you can tell that it delights him. He seems like a genuinely nice, humble guy. Great interview!
What a wonderful treat this was! To hear Johnny Mathis speak with such love and gratitude about his parents and the people he worked with is a breath of fresh air. What a class act he is, a perfect fit for his classy voice. Thank you Professor! Your interviews are treasures. 🎶💖
I saw him in concert last night (the first time was in Vegas about 15 years ago). He is almost 87 years old. My mother grew up with his music and as a child, I watched his Christmas specials and though I loved his voice, I was into "cool" music of the 60s and 70s. Now I appreciate his greatness. His voice is magical, even at 87, and his sweet energy and light, understated personality draw the audience close to him. He was comical when he forgot some lyrics and the whole theater laughed along with him. At 67 I was probably the youngest person in the audience. I'll tell you what, though -- I woke up at 6 this morning with "Wonderful, Wonderful" looping in my head. He is absolutely the greatest performer I've ever seen (and I've seen Tony Bennet in his old age as well) His voice exemplifies the word "dreamy"." It's a feel good, elevated vibration . He and Marvin Gaye -- the greatest one-man shows on earth. I feel blessed to have been in that space.
One of my earliest musical memories was my older sister getting this album of Johnny Mathis, and playing it over and over. Along with Frank Sinatra and other greats of that time. She also brought folk rock and then classic rock to me. But it all started with Johnny Mathis. Thank you, Adam, our favorite professor of rock, for bringing Johnny Mathis live to us. He is delightful and unassuming and charming. Merry Christmas to both of you and your loved ones.
Mr Mathis is such an absolute LEGEND. His voice can make angels cry from the sheer beauty and smoothness of it. His voice reminds me of being caressed by the warmest chenille blanket. There is no one that can match his intonation, his vocal phrasing or the magic he creates when he lets loose with the pipes. Thank you for such a wonderful and magical interview. It is simply not Christmas without Mr Mathis on perpetual repeat in the background.
Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, Mel Torme. These were LPs that scattered my parents and grandparents record collections. It was always music that was in the other room or played in the car - background music that subconsciously laid a foundation in my music vocabulary. Great artists. As I grew older I realized they were essential. I find myself turning back to them and discovering them with a renewed appreciation. Keep it alive! Johnny Mathis is a beautiful voice and a great man.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes! So many great ones. And I forgot about Tony Bennett and Vic Damone. I had an uncle who performed with Vic Damone during the war and remained friends with him for years afterward.
Just googled and found out Johnny is 87 years old! Guessing this was done recently and can only hope to look as good at 87 as Johnny Mathis. Also, adding more of his music to my library.
He and Deniece also sang the theme to Family Ties, one of the biggest shows of all time! It ran from the fall of 1982 to the spring of 1989 and starred none other than Michael J. Fox.
I find it great that he still recalls every detail, working with all these people, never forgetting to give others credit where it is due even though he was the face and the voice. And still to this day it was all about making his parents happy and proud, still grateful for all they did for him. All that success and such little ego. Johnny Mathis is truly one of a kind.
I’ve always loved Johnny Mathis. His music reminds me of my childhood when my mom, Mary VanderMeiden (who toured with Bob Hope, performing USO concerts for servicemen/woman) would play Christmas music around the house which always included Mathis. His humble kindness makes me love him even more. Thank you both for this Christmas gift!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Thank you! ❤️ She also played violin with Van Cliburn. I saw her on TV at least once as a kid. She spent the rest of her working years as a music teacher teaching the passion and joy of music to kids at various public schools across the country. I’m very fortunate to be spending Christmas with her and my siblings as we speak!
I still am thanking my lucky stars that my mom took me to a Mathis concert in 1964 at the Tulsa Civic Center when I was 10 years old. Pure class on stage with the most beautiful bow after every song. It was a great learning experience. But most of all the Voice. Oh that voice!
What a great humble man, with a tremendous voice. I'm so glad his parents were around to see his great success. He truly loves them, and is reunion with them will be great in time.
My ex-husband introduced me to Johnny Mathis when I was 17; I have loved him ever since, and I'm now 81. He is timeless, as is his voice, which is always incredibly recognizable. unforgettable, amazing voice.
Grew up with a next door neighbor in NJ that loved Mathis. Played his records all the time & lived for his appearance at a local amphitheater every summer ❤️
Merry Christmas, Adam. I grew up listening to not just rock and roll, but also Big Band swing and orchestra music. Great music, IS great music. No matter what the genre is. Johnny is one of the best. His singing voice will live on for hundreds of years.
There are some songs that only sound right when Johnny sings them. He is one of the great crooners, along with singers like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and Nat King Cole.
Johnny Mathis is not only delightful, he's such a good sport. He sings all of his standards at every concert, each time with all of his heart and soul. It's because he loves his audience as much as we love him.
Thank you for this lovely interview with Mr Mathis. His humanity and humility shine with the same brightness as his talent and there is great wisdom in his words. Kudos, too, for advancing PoR production values - the 3 camera shoot, music bumpers, inserted stills, nicely paced editing - we notice when we look, but it doesn't get in the way of the story telling at all. Thanks for this great Christmas gift!
Johnny Mathis is one of those singers that will forever remind me of my youth and the holidays. My mother (RIP) loved his music. She would play it on the holidays, especially when she was cooking all the treats, she would than give as gifts to so many people (all looked forward to her treats every year). It would not be Christmas without his music.
To me...THE voice of the holiday season. And there is no question he is a voice of a generation. "Chances Are" is a legit classic and stands with any and all songs from The Great American Songbook. Great interview, professor.
I've been a fan of Johnny Matthis since I was a kid, particularly his Christmas music. I was always surprised over the years that he was still touring, and finally, yesterday March 25th 2023 I saw his live and while I was probably at least 30 years younger than most there, it was truly a wonderful night. This didn't feel like the small show I thought it would be. It was grand with a full orchestra and I'm so happy I was able to see him. Still kicking and going at 87 years young.
The most magical night I ever had was a December concert at the Star Theater in Merriville Indiana. Johnny Mathis opened the show in white slacks and a beautiful Christmas sweater and sang his Christmas songs and after intermission he was in a tuxedo and sang his wonderful classics!!! It was something I will never forget! I grew up on 60’s and 70’s music but was also the youngest of six kids so I listened to my older siblings music from the 50’s and 60’s. I still have a hits cd in my car and Johnny Mathis is the Christmas music I listen to.
What a gentleman, pure class. He didn't take his career success for granted even at this point (which is probably why he was so successful for so long), he listened, he learned and he made some of the supreme classics of the '50's and '60's. What humility, what greatness, what a vocalist. Thank God for Johnny Mathis.....and thank God for Thomas Edison, too.
I'm blown away by the people you are able to interview! And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Merry Christmas and here's to a new year of success, Professor!
I just love Johnny Mathis. Our family owned restaurants for 45 years and we had live music for dancing and I heard Johnny's music a lot in my life. He has such a great voice. What a wonderful interview. Merry Christmas and cheers from Ottawa, Canada.
What an enormous pleasure I had in being able to watch this great singer up close, I was already his fan when I left the theater I became his fan, when I left the theater I was a woman completely in love with your wonderful voice.
Johnny, still doing great at 87 , he went to sf state college on a sports scholarship, track and field , and was a hopeful for the Olympics for the high jump ,in the failed trials he was 3 in away from the Olympic record in 1952 , Johnny and Bill Russell were featured together in a sf paper about their high jumping abilities , you never know about people's pasts sometimes , I've been listening to Christmas rock on RUclips even the Ramones have one and acdc has I want a mistress for Christmas , the pretenders 2000 miles is also a favorite of mine , merry Christmas everyone

Merry Christmas Adam. Hope you're having a great one and the happiest of Christmases to everyone who reads this. May all your dreams come true.
Yes, my mom got a few of his Christmas records, and Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper” (another great Christmas album.) That was our tradition to just put them on the old stereo two cassettes (and later 4-5 CDs) at a time on auto play.

My ex-husband introduced me to Johnny Mathis when I was 17; I have loved him ever since, and I'm now 81. He is timeless, as is his voice, which is always incredibly recognizable. unforgettable, amazing voice.
An example of talent rising above all else….America, despite its faults, can be a magical place for anyone.
Mr. Mathis……..gorgeous, marvelous voice ever. ❤👌
Grew up with a next door neighbor in NJ that loved Mathis. Played his records all the time & lived for his appearance at a local amphitheater every summer ❤️
Cool!
How wonderful to have the opportunity to interview this wonderful soul.
I loved this episode! Johnny Mathis seems like such a wonderful human being as well as a legendary singer.
I've adored Johnny Mathis my entire life. Chances Are, my fave all time song, still moves me. Just a wonderful singer and artist.
Merry Christmas, Adam. I grew up listening to not just rock and roll, but also Big Band swing and orchestra music. Great music, IS great music. No matter what the genre is. Johnny is one of the best. His singing voice will live on for hundreds of years.
The 50s were elegant. Merry Christmas Lane! 🎄
Awesome interview. Johnny's the absolute best. Love him.
A truly humble legend..all he talks about is the people who helped him .
There are some songs that only sound right when Johnny sings them. He is one of the great crooners, along with singers like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and Nat King Cole.
Agreed. Nothing like the Christmas legends.
Johnny Mathis and Burl Ives; two voices with a fantastic tone. Wonderful.
Two masters of Christmastime.
Don’t forget John Denver. Coventry Carol.
Johnny Mathis is not only delightful, he's such a good sport. He sings all of his standards at every concert, each time with all of his heart and soul. It's because he loves his audience as much as we love him.
I LOVE JOHNNY MATHIS !!! Thank you so much ! Merry Christmas !!🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Merry Christmas Michelle! 🎄

My mother was a huge fan of his.....I grew up hearing music like this. Bravo, Johnny. Thanks for the memory Professor Rock! Tee
I usually think of Nat King Cole or Roy Orbison when I think of my favorite voices but I forget to add Johnny Mathis into that conversation.
JOHNNY MATHIS LIVES!!! 😱😱😱❤️❤️❤️
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Johnny Mathis is one of those singers that will forever remind me of my youth and the holidays. My mother (RIP) loved his music. She would play it on the holidays, especially when she was cooking all the treats, she would than give as gifts to so many people (all looked forward to her treats every year). It would not be Christmas without his music.
Reminds me of my family, who would cook a myriad of desserts as Christmas music filled the air.
What a wonderful man. His voice is so distinct.
To me...THE voice of the holiday season. And there is no question he is a voice of a generation. "Chances Are" is a legit classic and stands with any and all songs from The Great American Songbook. Great interview, professor.
I still pull out my Time/Life Christmas CD’s every year to play during the holidays. This song is one of my favorites. Merry Christmas, everyone!
Merry Christmas Jenny! Love your comments on here! 🎄

I recall loving his music as a kid in the 50s. It REALLY stood out for me, our family having a radio and little more except happiness.
My grandma and her brother listened to Johnny Mathis on their radio back then too.
Merry Christmas Sean! 🎄
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 to all of your families!!! Thanks
Same to you and yours! ❤
I just love Johnny Mathis. Our family owned restaurants for 45 years and we had live music for dancing and I heard Johnny's music a lot in my life. He has such a great voice. What a wonderful interview. Merry Christmas and cheers from Ottawa, Canada.
Merry Christmas! 🎄
He has such a comforting voice. How lucky we are to have him and his music 💜
What a lovely man with such a wonderful voice!
Such a kind and humble guy who cherishes his parents. So glad he made it big! Thanks for sharing!
How lovely to hear from this iconic performer!
Wow, Johnny hasn’t aged. A golden voice. Thanks!
He looks great! One of the best voices of any style, ever.
So cute too. ❤
This was THE Christmas album my white, middle-class family listened to every Christmas, and we still do with my kids and Grandkids 60 years later!
Thank you,Professor of Rock! Such a beautiful voice and dashingly handsome man. Johny Mathis is truly an unmatchable gift to the world.
Love it! I was a kid and mom and dad would play this album. loved hearing his voice and song.
Me too.
A golden voice, and a lovely man. I had no idea that he'd sold so many records! I'm not surprised. A great interview.
😃 *Johnny is awesome!* 😃

It doesn't surprise me that he is so kind! I love Johnny Mathis and have since I was a little girl. He is a class act! Great voice!❤
Blessed Yule Proffesor and everyone who reads this. Peace to you and yours.
Same to you. ❤
What an enormous pleasure I had in being able to watch this great singer up close, I was already his fan when I left the theater I became his fan, when I left the theater I was a woman completely in love with your wonderful voice.
One of the best and most distinctive warm voices ever in history !!
What a lovely genuine man and still has a beautiful voice!❤️
Johnny, still doing great at 87 , he went to sf state college on a sports scholarship, track and field , and was a hopeful for the Olympics for the high jump ,in the failed trials he was 3 in away from the Olympic record in 1952 , Johnny and Bill Russell were featured together in a sf paper about their high jumping abilities , you never know about people's pasts sometimes , I've been listening to Christmas rock on RUclips even the Ramones have one and acdc has I want a mistress for Christmas , the pretenders 2000 miles is also a favorite of mine , merry Christmas everyone
Christmas isn't Christmas without Johnny Mathis. When a child is born is my absolute favourite Christmas song of all times. There's something so magical in Johnny's voice. What a wonderful human. Merry Christmas Adam. Hope you're having a great one and the happiest of Christmases to everyone who reads this. May all your dreams come true.
I still have my mom's record that she bought brand new when it came out. :D
Good for you!
Now I’m a big rock fan but I love love love Johnny Mathis especially Chances Are 🥰🥰
Me too. Great song.
Yes, my mom got a few of his Christmas records, and Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper” (another great Christmas album.)
That was our tradition to just put them on the old stereo two cassettes (and later 4-5 CDs) at a time on auto play.
Pretty neat.
Oh wow, this interview has got to be one amazing Christmas present for you, PoR. This is super special.
Merry Christmas to you and all the rock n roll fans out there.
Thanks so much for all of your videos and amazing insights. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Eric! 🎄
Thank you so much for this interview! His voice is one of those voices that as soon as you hear it you know who it is! Wonderful singer, wonderful man!
So distinctive.
What a nice job talking to the one and only Johnny Mathis. I still love his stuff. No one ever compared to him.
Professor, this is possibly the best interview you've done. Johnny Mathis is an amazing singer and an amazing person.
As always, great interview! You can see the memories in Johnnys eyes as he talks about his songs. It literally brought tears to my eyes that he made his Christmas album for his mom. God bless to all. Merry Christmas.
His voice is like velvet. So soothing to listen to his music.
His songs are magical.
The Man should be considered a National Treasure!
What a sweetheart! So generous and grateful and kind! I always loved his songs, but I’d never seen an interview with him before. He’s just lovely! Great job, Prof! Perfect for Christmas Day! ❤
