This was such a hit for Johnny back then. All of his songs are beautiful and we have to give a hat tip to the composers of that day and the orchestras. Perfect for a voice like Johnny's.
My grandparents lived in Vegas the whole time I was growing up. Every time we went to visit. My mom and dad had to go see a Johnny Mathis concert. I probably know every word, and every song that he’s ever done. Great reaction as usual.
It's been years since I heard that song. Excellent choice. My favorite rendition of "Misty". I remember my mom bought his Christmas album. His Ave Maria is superb. The vocals and the musicians back then. Nobody knows how to hold notes let alone sing.
Johnny Mathis contains all the feels in one voice. He's so smooth and controlled. I also love this arrangement. IMHO, it's the definitive version, just edging out Nat King Cole's cover. Great reaction, Maggie!
OK, don’t get me started in Johnny Mathis. His vocals are insane. I once saw him live and he was one of those few singers that sound just as good live as recorded. All of his music is phenomenal but one of my favorite albums is Goodnight Dear Lord. Although I am not religious he sings some of the most beautiful songs ever. He sings both Ave Maria’s but pick anything he sings and you will love it. Another singer that is not generally known but has a 3 1/2 octave voice is John Gary. My favorite songs by him are If Ever I Would Leave You, Tenderly, and although he is not Hispanic he does my favorit version of La Malagueña. By the way he held several underwater records. I think you will like him.
One of the most acrobatic popular vocalists of the 20th century, and alive in the 21st. His "Wonderful, Wonderful" is fire, and on "Pieces of Dreams" (which she should analyze), he floored late night host Johnny Carson (and the studio audience)
Johnny Mathis was a major role model for Barbra Streisand,. You can hear it in their unique improvisations that demonstrate their artistry and enrich their performances immeasurably. I have loved both of these remarkable singers for decades and am glad to think that younger people can find their way to this great music by such stellar artists.
Mathis also had the raw ability to become an Olympic-grade track star. (Maybe exceptional breath control is the common denominator there.) So he had to choose. Couldn't do intense training in both. I saw him in Vegas in 2002. He still had the stuff.
The arrangement was written by Percy Faith with the input of Mitch Miller, then A&R director at Columbia. A symphonic oboist, Miller suggested the solo oboe measures on which Mathis begins the crescendo on the phrase “On my way.”
Such a voice! Johnny killed it, Maggie! It is so sad music like that is hardly listened these days... Please keep on reacting to Johnny Mathis Great reaction!❤ Greetings from Argentina
Johnny mathis is good a really dedicated perfectionist. Perfect for interpreting those wonderful tunes of yesteryears. Im old enough to have plsyed those vinyl albums on my record stereo. He had a few habits that some felt were not for a trained singer. Misty is an absolute gem in any bodys book.
I have always been impressed with the way he faded in after the musical interlude with the "oooooooooooooon my own". This is the kind of music you played on a romantic evening with your significant other. I say played because nowadays, people seem to play rap, hip hop and reggaeton on their dates.
Hi Maggie. Thanks for doing Johnny Mathis. He is from my generation. The "look at me" at the very end was unlike Ella Fitzgerald's rendition. That was almost what? Plaintive? Hint - Sohyang does a bluesy Ella-version of" Misty" on her "Begin Again" tour that is breathtaking. Cheers.
Ray Stevens, who is known mostly for his comedy, recorded a wonderful version of MISTY. He and some musicians were in a recording studio, rehearsing and decided to take a break. They began playing around with the song, not making fun of it, but trying some new things. Someone suggested they put it on tape, it was released as a single, and won a Grammy.
Fanally you made Johnny Mathis .congrats Maggie Renneé .You just pass your class of fifty and sixty .With Johnny Mathis . Thank you for your reaction love it .
Thank you for taking us through this wonderful song. I've been a fan of Johnny Mathis since the sixties. His voice is magic. Thank you for the intricate explanation. His rendition of Ave Maria is unbelievable.
Saw him awhile back and one of the funniest things I've seen in an act was when he came to the high to low part of "On my own" the band stopped.and it was completely quiet. Suddently all you could hear was all of the females giant unified fainting and swoons, "Ahhhhh" and everyone broke out in laughter. He obviously knew how to play the audience.
Early on, the late Max Weiss of the original Fantasy Records in SF, heard him and said. "He sounds like a nanny goat", and passed on signing him. We teased him forevermore with new artists. with "Nanny goat, Max!"
Now one sings this like Johnny. One of my all time favorites. If old time singing is what you like listen to Lucy Thomas sing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. No one sings it like her. Heavenly! Thanks for your reactions. P.S. You have a beautiful voice also.
The echo that you hear I believe is in the production. They recorded a number of artists from that era this way. Listen to many of Tony Bennett's tracks from the 60's and there is a similar quality. I love it. It adds an aura elegance and timeliness.
This song was written by Errol Garner (1921-1977) jazz pianist. This was actually his signature song. Was a self taught pianist and played by ear. Johnny Mathis' version was a hit in 1959
Have you seen or heard his performance on a Lawrence Welk show were he sings one note for about a minute and a half while some women sing the song "Johnny one note"?
Anyone who has felt love for the first time and was overwhelmed by such a relationship and 'felt like a kitten up a tree' will cry like a baby when they listen to this, their first love. And it won't matter how much time has passed by, the feeling will always be there. Note: How great was this song? Johnny Mathis produced a greatest hits album and 'Misty' was not included because it was felt it would so dominate a listeners attention it would be better to leave it out and feature it in another album. Many years later, in fact to this day (October, 2024), another song has been produced which can relate to this beautiful song as another example of a love influenced by a "misty' relationship and the song is 'Bad Valentine' (the jazzy version) sung by Angelina Jordan (at 18 years old) and written and produced by Angelina and Toby Gad. Post script: Maggie, I know I'm commenting to an older video and that you have already reacted to Angelina's beautiful new jazzy song so that fella in 'Bad Valentine' surely will melt when he listens to the great Johnny Mathis sing one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, 'Misty'.
the PhD clinical psychologist that I was a client of on my way to becoming a clinical psychologist was originally trained at Juliard and then worked with Judy Garland & Pearl Bailey
I would love to hear your reaction to Johnny's version of Pieces Of Dreams -- not his recorded version, but the arrangement that he adopted later that is captured both on The Tonight show and a special Johnny did In The Canadian Rockies. He holds the final note for so long one feels that he must have broken something.
I wore out many Mathis songs on my turntable as a young man. Nat King Cole, Mathis , Ella Fitzgerald, and other contemporaries understood the dynamics of emotional intonation. Enduring beauty of the classics.
Johnny Mathis' version was my in-laws' song. It could always get them out on the dance floor. Being a jazz snob, I would tell them that I preferred the Oscar Peterson recording I owned. However, I secretly would sing along to it using my best Mathis impersonation.
I grew up on this music! Love this song and Chances Are! A singer I'd really like to hear you react to is Diana Krall. She doesn't have the greatest range but she really knows how to phrase a song. My guitar teacher turned me on to her for the song When I Look In Your Eyes (originally sung by Rex Harrison in the original Dr. Doolittle to a seal at sea after a shipwreck). He called it the most b-e-autiful love song ever written. (He didn't do the b-e-a part... I did that for you!). She's not old enough to know the songs she's singing! She also plays jazz piano and she's drop dead gorgeous! I also love Popsicle Toes, Besame Mucho, and Frim Fram Sauce. She's a huge Nat King Cole fan (as am I). Love your reactions and the way you break it all down!
Johnny and Sarah Vaughn own this song. Yes, there are many versions, (Nat King Cole and Mel Torme's versions come to mind), these two, IMO, are the toppers.
great reaction.I agree with others-you have to try and sing this-be amazing from a woman's take on the song-and your emotions and power would be fantastic.
I would say that you should look for his AMC Live by request version of Misty. Compare how much his vocals have matured!! I love the Live by request!! And I love Johnny Mathis. I have been listening to him for years.
Back in the 1950's, Columbia had a studio in Manhattan where their most important artists recorded their songs. They were able to produce an echo which I could easily identify. I think that Mitch Miller was responsible for this.
Speaking of kitten up a tree, that reminds me of the story of a man who had to leave for a business trip in Europe for a few days and asked his neighbor if he would take care of his cat and look in on his mother while he was gone, which the neighbor agreed to do. After he got to Europe, and settled in to his hotel room, he called his neighbor to ask how things were going, how was his cat. The neighbor said his cat died. The man immediately dropped the phone and hung up. A few minutes later he called the neighbor back and ask him why he just came out and told him so bluntly that his cat died, as it was quite a shock. He said he could have broken it to him more slowly. For example, on the first call he could have said his cat was stuck up on the roof and can't get down. Then the next day when he called, he could have said the cat jumped off the roof but was injured and is at the vet. Then the next time he called he could have said the vet tried to save him but unfortunately the cat succumbed to his injuries. The neighbor apologized and said he understood. The man then asked, "So, how is my mother? The neighbor replied, "Your mother is on the roof."

I don't know how an opera singer or anyone in the music business could never have heard one of the greatest singers of all time.
DANG RIGHT BRYAN --- she must live in a cave somewhere -- Mathis sang that song first --- even in the movie in 1970's -- can't cure her
The greatest voice ever!! Its angelic
Hes Impeccable.
From the era of 'Come back to my place. I'll put on a little Johnny Mathis and we can look at my etchings'.
Thank you! I have always LOVED Johnny Mathis!! Such a smooth beautiful voice.
This was such a hit for Johnny back then. All of his songs are beautiful and we have to give a hat tip to the composers of that day and the orchestras. Perfect for a voice like Johnny's.
Only my 1,000 time hearing this song. I hope for another 1,000 times!
Johnny means so much to me. He's been with me forever. I finally saw him live about 15 years ago. Can a guy swoon?
My grandparents lived in Vegas the whole time I was growing up. Every time we went to visit. My mom and dad had to go see a Johnny Mathis concert. I probably know every word, and every song that he’s ever done.
Great reaction as usual.
It's been years since I heard that song. Excellent choice. My favorite rendition of "Misty". I remember my mom bought his Christmas album. His Ave Maria is superb. The vocals and the musicians back then. Nobody knows how to hold notes let alone sing.
His Christmas Albums were a great tradition in my house as a kid.
Still the best Christmas Albums of all time
"Misty" : Erroll Garner (1954), Johnny Mathis (1959), "Play Misty for Me" Clint Eastwood & Jessica Walters (1971) Female stalker movie!
Thank you for acknowledging that this gorgeous song was written by Erroll Garner.
He had one of those voices that no one could match. My mother use to love his music. His voice is like velvet.
He was my mom's favorite singer and song! Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories. ❤❤❤
Johnny Mathis contains all the feels in one voice. He's so smooth and controlled. I also love this arrangement. IMHO, it's the definitive version, just edging out Nat King Cole's cover. Great reaction, Maggie!
Mathis had a soothing voice. Love his Christmas songs.
Still does!!!!
And Nat King Cole's rendition of "The Christmas Song" (🎶Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire🎶) 💞
A great slow dance with your girl as you softly recite the words in her ear. I still remember the lyrics.
Beautiful vocal music.
OK, don’t get me started in Johnny Mathis. His vocals are insane. I once saw him live and he was one of those few singers that sound just as good live as recorded. This was one of my mothers favorites. I've always liked it too but now I'd like to hear Maggie sing it all the way through.
So glad you enjoyed. I sing it sometimes on my live streams hope to see you then. 🤗
I love how he closes his 'N's and still uses that killer vibrato on them.
Loved this! I've always been a fan of Johnny Mathis, ever since his first appearance on national TV in 1957 on the Ed Sullivan Show. Thank you Maggie!
Johnny Mathis was a major role model for Barbra Streisand,. You can hear it in their unique improvisations that demonstrate their artistry and enrich their performances immeasurably. Chances Are is one of his best, too. He and Nat King Cole... two of the best.
Johnny Mathis might just be my favorite male voice of all time. So many different sounds, such sweetness, such mastery in his choices and dexterity.
johnny was also an all-American track and field athlete at S.F. State. he bested all competitors including a guy named Bill Russell in the high jump.
Please keep on reacting to Johnny Mathis
Great reaction!❤
Greetings from Argentina
How marvelous to be able to sing along with songs, and actually be good at it.❤❤
Thank you Mike

They aren't dates, only hookups.
@@armadillotoe speak for yourself. Many people actually have long lasting meaningful relationships.
@@armadillotoe😂, that sounds about right to me, or perhaps that's my generation listening.
Johnny says he would start that sound while approaching the microphones. Genius!

If you set out to create the most amazing voice & delivery you could imagine, it would sound like Mr. Mathis!!!!!
My mom use to fangirl over him as much as she did for Elvis and Fabian

Johnny mathis's an American treasure
It’s from the movie Play Misty for Me starring Clint Eastwood
Great movie. Speaking of stalking
Maggie, you have to cover this. It's one of my favorite songs from my absolute favorite singer ever and you'd sound fantabulous singing it.
Thank you for taking us through this wonderful song. I've been a fan of Johnny Mathis since the sixties. His voice is magic. Thank you for the intricate explanation. His rendition of Ave Maria is unbelievable.
I love hm so. Today's his birthday. Sept 30. Happy birthday Johnny
The word "smoove" was created to describe Johnny . . .
Listen to Johnny sing Lately and Brazil

Went to his show in Sydney Australia long time ago great show. Peace out.
You can see him on the Ed sullivan show and other variety shows back in the day. Magical voice
His cover of "Maria" from the original "West Side Story" is excellent as well
Oh God... now I would really love to hear your own version Maggie... Lovely tune, I need to see if you have already reacted to "Chances are".
Thanks so much hope to see you on my next live stream and I can sing this for you! 🤗
He's in an actual echo chamber recording .... And he physically walked up to the mic to fade in for the onnnnnn my own...... So cool
Early on, the late Max Weiss of the original Fantasy Records in SF, heard him and said. "He sounds like a nanny goat", and passed on signing him. We teased him forevermore with new artists. with "Nanny goat, Max!"
He is amazing!!! Thank you for bringing out so many intricate abilities he possesses. His talent is a gift to us!!
Johnny owns this song. Johnny is velvet. Meow.

Johnny is something as an instrument.
Point of interest there is a Clint Eastwood movie about a stalked DJ called, "Play Misty For Me".
Check out "The Twelfth of Never" and "There I Said it Again", my favorite song, from twelve until eighteen.
This is all out there. Look for it.
The echo that you hear I believe is in the production. They recorded a number of artists from that era this way. Listen to many of Tony Bennett's tracks from the 60's and there is a similar quality. I love it. It adds an aura elegance and timeliness.

You should listen to his A time for us - probably the best version I have ever heard.
It was Johnny Mathis' greatest hits that Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon pushed out as the longest run on Billboard top 200
Beautiful music accompaniment for sure.
Dreamy ❤ Try his “Chances Are.”
Check out his The twelfth of never.
my grandma fav singer👍❤️
You're taking this 66 year old lady back to her real young years
His Christmas album is still the best ever.
What ever happened to beautiful music like this ?
I wore out many Mathis songs on my turntable as a young man. Nat King Cole, Mathis , Ella Fitzgerald, and other contemporaries understood the dynamics of emotional intonation. Enduring beauty of the classics.

Big fan from my childhood onward.

I think Johnny is of East Indian heritage. His ornamentation remind me of how they sing in India.
Johnny and Sarah Vaughn own this song. Yes, there are many versions, (Nat King Cole and Mel Torme's versions come to mind), these two, IMO, are the toppers.
BTW, this song was known to make bra clasps fling open of their own volition, back in the Day.
Have you watched the video from André Rieu with Emma? Outstanding talent.

Gosh.... I love how much you appreciate these yummy, rich details. 💕
I would like to hear Brian Johnson cover this in the voice of Elmo on crack 😂
I’m requesting another Johnny Mathis comeback song; Too Much, Too Little, Too Late (It’s Over), duet with Denise Williams.
I love that song
Back in the 1950's, Columbia had a studio in Manhattan where their most important artists recorded their songs. They were able to produce an echo which I could easily identify. I think that Mitch Miller was responsible for this.
