I saw Johnny Mathis a few weeks ago. He sang for ov 90 minutes. He had a full orchestra!! He is 87 and his voice is unchanged! The concert was wonderful! Thanks Fil!!
When I was in college, there was a radio station that always signed off at midnight after playing Johnny's "Twelfth Of Never," and we always stayed up to hear it. Such a beautiful voice, unique and immediately recognizable.
I had such a crush on Johnny Mathis. I thought he had the most beautiful voice. I would save my babysitting money and go up to our local variety store and buy the latest 45 to play on my little record player too. My Mom and Dad surprised me on my 16th birthday and took me to see him at the University of Berkeley. They really liked him too.
When you have a world class voice and a beautiful sense for phrasing, people are going to listen even if it’s not their genre. That’s the magic of a true artist. Great tribute Phil
I actually saw him in concert once which I kept hidden from my friends because we were Rockers! I actually love Misty & Chances Are & I can admit that so many years later. This is beautiful! Thanks Fil!
Chances Are is absolutely beautiful. I love the part when he starts a very high note so softly it sounds like it is still one of the instruments playing then it builds back into the vocals.
Kkkkkk eu já fiz isso! Me esconder porque eu era fã de um cantor do Brasil, que era muito criticado! Depois larguei tudo para lá e assumi que era fã...
Yeah!! Johnny Mathis! He has said many times that he "just loves to sing". I've never seen or heard a lackluster performance by him. He has a true respect for what his voice can do and treats it the way any dedicated musician would treat the instrument they play. "Open Fire, Two Guitars" is one of the best albums ever recorded. Great job!👋
The last concert I went to before the pandemic lockdowns was Johnny Mathis. He was 83, but he didn’t look it and he certainly didn’t sound it. Then, the first concert I went to after the pandemic settled down was-you guessed it-Johnny Mathis. Now as an 86 year old man, he didn’t look sprightly anymore, but his voice is still amazing. He did two roughly hour-long sets with a 30-40 minute break (I think it’s interesting that he uses his opening act as his intermission), and he was stunning. I was most impressed with his mic techniques. This man KNOWS how to use a microphone. Excellent video, Fil!

Johnny Mathis began as a jazz singer in his late teens. Columbia signed him at 20 and recorded a jazz album that didn’t sell. Genius Mitch Miller had the notion to convert him to an easy listening artist.Mitch taught him how to adjust his style and the rest is history. JM has a trained instrument and has demonstrated the ability to virtually sing anything. Thank you for your detailed education, it’s always appreciated.
Seriously, are you digging into my childhood?! THE Johnny Mathis "Merry Christmas" vinyl was a stable at our home from the second the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade was over until a few days after Christmas. I love every song on there, and loved to sing along, letting Johnny's voice mask my, um, deficiencies. Haha. Also, there was a skip at "May your days be...days be...days be...merry and bright!" We still sing it that way.
I can honestly (seriously) say that Johnny Mathis’ smooth voice was partially responsible for my conception. My folks have been gone for a long time but I think of them whenever I hear that voice. I used to tease my Mom by saying that she had a ménage á trois with Johnny and my Dad. 😂 Thanks for posting this, Fil!
HAHAHAHA!!! I'm 77 now. I can tell you for sure that I did a lot of dancing in darkened rooms to Johnny on the stereo when I was in highschool & early college.
Thank you soooo much, Fil... I think people may not realize just the amount of range he has, and the overall " smoothness " he has is so unique, part of his appeal, as well as how he " mixes things up ", with the way he sings. I saw him perform at Caesars Palace, in Vegas... I believe it was 1995, maybe 1996 (it was a Birthday Gift) ... And it was supposedly one of the BEST shows he'd ever done.. so that made seeing him in person even more outstanding. ... Actually met him Backstage, and it was " kinda surreal", ..I'd been a huge fan of his since I was in Jr. High School. ...54 years ago. ( I'm one those women that love the Singers from the 40's, 50's and 60's.... I got made fun of ,but actually didn't care ,lol) .
Johnny Mathis is known for his beautiful romantic ballads. He has a very unique velvet voice. His music has spanned over 6 decades. He had so many great hits such as "Wonderful! Wonderful!", "Chances Are", "It's Not for Me to Say", "The Twelfth Of Never", "Gina", "What Will Mary Say", "Misty" etc. He also did a couple of duets with Deniece Williams "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" & "You're All I Need to Get By".

First I would like to say that Johnny Mathis is still with us. He is still on the road presenting and performing concerts. As he has matured, so has his voice. Several non musical terms I will use to describe his voice...magical, smooth, legendary, awesome,. At 63, I am probably on the older end of your subscribers. Music is such a spiritual entity, it brings us together regardless of our age or station in life. Fil, I appreciate your passion and enthusiasm. I mostly want to thank you for sharing.

He's created a real community of music lovers on his channel, where age is completely irrelevant. It's a very friendly, positive place to be, which is getting harder and harder to find online.

In the 1960s I was watching The Lennon Sisters Show (4 Singing sisters previously on the Lawrence Welk Show). They were preparing to sing a song and said they would have a guest performing with them. He was introduced as "Johnny One Note". "Johnny One Note " held one note throughout the Lennon Sisters song. I was floored! I discovered that he was Johnny Mathis. I have been to many of his live performances and enjoyed them tremendously.
He was someone who I listened to, liked but never said I want to buy his album. But what impressed me with this video was your voice, Fil. You're able to do these demonstrations with such ease. Merci for this channel. We appreciate what you have built up.
Johnny Mathis being gifted in two field of the entertainment industry I'm sure I'm not alone when I say he made the right decision perusing a recording career with the vocal technique he has. what a long and successful career for Johnny spanning over 6 decades.

His Greatest Hits album was on Billboard's Hot 100 for something like 10 years I think. It never left during that time. I saw him perform here in the Great Auditorium when he was in his 70's and he still sounded great.
Have you ever seen the video of Johnny Mathis called, Johnny Mathis , One Note? It’s a video of Johnny sustaining a single note for one minute and 28 seconds. It would be great if you could analyze that video as a follow up to this one. And maybe explain how Johnny can do this. I heard it was some type of breathing he does… circle breathing? Not sure what it’s called. Even if you don’t analyze Johnny Mathis One Note on your channel, it’s worth watching on your own. Pretty incredible to see. They say it is the longest singing note. Pretty frickin amazing to see him do this. He was opera trained. You’ve got to see this, Fil. And I would love it if you did an analysis of him performing this unbelievable physical human feat. Thanks for covering Johnny Mathis. Such a gifted vocalist and one of my favorites.
My mother was a huge Johnny Mathis fan. I listened to him a lot in my youth. He always made things sound so effortless, as many of the greats did and do. He definitely has a very recognisable voice.
Wow! That was an awesome performance! I love Johnny's strong and beautiful voice! I love this song, it's so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. It was another excellent analysis!
Fil! Your own vocal accuracy! Way to go! I want to note how Mathis grabs the mic and leans back for the last note, even bending at the knee a bit- so many singers make the mistake of looking up with their neck, which constrains you, while Mathis draws his whole frame backward evenly, keeping the frame as open as possible. Textbook perfection.
Thank you so much for this review, I did enjoy it, I could listen to Johnny Mathis all day and all night. If you are not familiar with all his music make be sure you listen to The 12th of Never, It's the most romantic song ever. :)
This is cosmic! My sisters birthday was yesterday and I was recalling how she loves Johnny Mathis, and wondered if you ever looked at his great voice. Then, walla! Here it is the next day! Thanks !
I've always loved to hear Johnny sing. One of the most beautiful and unique voices ever! Edit: If you haven't yet, would you please consider doing an analysis of Freddy Fender? That would be most awesome, thanks!
In my sowing wild seeds rock and roll days of the mid 1950's to early 1970's, between the ages of like 5 to early 20's, when rocking and rolling, teenage stuff really dominated. Johhny Mathis was really anything but, but the voice, the tremendous orchestrations, think it was Percy Faith, somebody like that. Wonderful Wonderful. It's Not for me to say, Chances are, etc etc. The atmosphere created, it just was mesmerizing!
Amazing analysis Fil for an amazing singer. My husband and I went to see him and Dionne Warwick at The Greek Theatre here in Los Angles back in the late 80’s. What a fantastic show. You could hear a pin drop as he was so intoxicating.
Amazing! I didn't realize anyone was such a master with the microphone. I remember Sinatra criticizing Ella Fitzgerald for not using the microphone. But I never could tell it - I thought she was great! Thank you for this, Fil! Yet another eye-opening one.
I saw him live back in the 1980’s. I was accompanied by my mom and her elderly aunt and all agreed how his voice was still silky smooth. Later that month we all saw Englebert Humperdink with similar response.
I've greatly appreciated his talent since the sixties. What I can't figure out, is why I have never gotten around to getting any of his albums. Perhaps it was that where I heard his music, was as background music in elevators and stores, and on radio stations that I didn't like (for a variety of reasons). Thanks for doing this one. I think there are still plenty of artists you haven't covered, but, like the ones you have done, have/had amazing skill and talent; you should definitely keep this series going (unless you are getting sick of it, of course).
My 70+ year old mother often went to see him when possible. I took her to see him for her last time some years ago in KY. I didn't want to actually sit and listen so was thankful my daughter didn't mind. But, as I sat outside in the foyer, working on my laptop, I heard that man's voice so utterly clear and so tremendously beautiful that I was truly overwhelmed! It was such an incredible treat, one that I'll never forget.
Just yesterday I spoke to someone about the handful of singers that l felt were the great standouts of the 20th century. Leaving out opera, Johnny Mathis was one of my top five. The hum at the opening of this is, to say the least, arresting. Thank you.
Love this! I have always loved Johnny Mathis' voice! But, would you please do a voice analysis video of Stevie Ray Vaughan's vocals on Tick Tock by the Vaughan Brothers? His voice really is superb in that song and really draws the listener in. Plus, Stevie's birthday is coming up soon! 3 October. Would be a very nice birthday tribute to him. Thank you, Fil!
The man’s vibrato is so unique and in total command of his voice. Seriously, i couldn’t give two hoots about those two other guys who supposedly had the more popular voices than him in the 20th century. The reality is that someday someone will be able to mimic their voices (if not already so) but nobody will ever be able to mimic Johnny’s vibrato.
I definitely went down a Johnny Mathis rabbit hole as a young singer. I really loved It's Not For Me To Say and Chances Are. He has such a unique voice and great breath control. Thank you as always for your thoughtful analysis. And I love the Gondor t-shirt!🖤🤘
Have memories of this song because my dad was a big fan of Johnny Mathis. I also remember being in primary school and in my final year us kids were encouraged to bring in records on the last school day before Christmas, I'm talking 1977. I recall this record and Mull of Kintyre getting a lot of play on the teacher's record player.
I was raised in a home where Johnny Mathis was a staple sound. I was more or less into his music until I heard Twist and Shout for the first time. Mom and Dad had competition for the record player ever after.
Wonderful review, Fil! I’ve always been intrigued by Johnny’s vocal technique, which included an almost “clicking” of the soft palette, or vocal break, during certain songs. It is so unique that it sets him apart from other “crooners” of that period.
Absolutely correct,Pookie Pookie! I saw Johnny Mathis in concert in 1976 when I was 12.I was mesmerized by Johnny’s voice! Robin Gibb became my favorite singer in 1977 til 2022! I saw Robin in concert on October 6,1979 with Barry Maurice and Andy.Robin and Johnny have wonderful, soulful vibratos that I absolutely adore! They are the best singers ever!
I just fell over this one. I LOVED Johnny Mathis (still do, but that isn't part of the story). That fact helped me connect with my Mom, who had great taste in music. We traded generational music and I got JM and Harry Belefonte out of the deal, among others. She got C,S&N and Jimmy Page's guitar (she loved classical guitar) among others. When I hear him now I'm reminded of later singers like Michael Stipe of REM... it's the emotion that shines through. :) Elvis and Sinatra were great, but they had followings - they were bandwagons that people could jump onto. To me Johnny Mathis is just a GREAT voice. Belated thanks for doing this!!
Thank you for this one, Fil. I so appreciate the respect you show to singers of yesterday. I've always been in awe of Johnny Mathis' voice and how he makes it all look so effortless. My favorite song of his will always be "Misty," where you can really hear his incredible range. Great job in analyzing this and helping us understand how a great singer does what he does.
Another brilliant analysis Fil. Johnny Mathis had one of the most distinctive and beautiful voices I have ever heard, absolutely love this and the 12th of never.
Thanks for doing a JM video. I'm sure many have asked you to do this... including me. He is one of the truly great vocalists of the 20th (and 21st) century. The tone, the technique and the longevity are beyond compare. I'm a bit bias, as I've seen him perform perhaps 50+ times over the years, as well as watching him in the studio and rehearsing at his office. He is a phenomenon. And, on a personal note: I've known him for almost 50 years and I can tell those who love him that not only is he an amazing talent, he is one of the nicest and most genuine people one could ever meet. It has been a true privilege for me to have this friendship in my life. Hope that this channel decides to repeat and analyze another JM video in the future. BTW, John continues to give 3 or 4 concerts a month (only in the U.S. now) at the tender age of 87 and still sounds just like himself. This is a very good thing. WL
Johnny Mathis started out in the 50s and can certainly belt out songs like no other and with his vibrato as in his voice. Amazing. The song that I heard that really sold me was "That Certain Smile." was so beautiful being sung by Johnny was so beautifully done.
Another great analysis, Fil. My dad had the Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits album and I used to love to sing along with it. I still love all of Johnny's first hits...with his golden voice, they are timeless classics. .
He makes it sound completely effortless,no straining and wibbly-wobbly theatrics. I love how he throws the back of his throat open. He could have done that all the way through, but it would have been too much.
Fil, you've dropped another nostalgia bomb on me 🎤😵 When I was small I spent a lot of time at the home of a friend who was a latchkey kid (and a pretty good cook). My family didn't have a record player but his did (one of those big "entertainment units" about the size of a hefty couch). We'd often go to his place after school, eat and listen to records. The artists we listened to the most were Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and Johnny Mathis. Like critics in training we argued about who we thought was best and why. We were rarely consistent. Thanks a bountiful bunch for this stroll down Memory Lane. (I feel no need to praise the quality of your analysis simply because you never disappoint. Stay well in whatever age you find yourself. 😎)
Fil, I don't know how many hours I've spent watching your videos, for a young guy to appreciate the "older" singers is amazing. I don't understand most of what you say but I pretend I do. Keep up the good work!

Always love Johnny Mathis and his many charms. Now you have taught me why his voice and skill were so ear catching. Thank you 😉
In my sowing wild seeds rock and roll days of the mid 1950's to early 1970's, between the ages of like 5 to early 20's, when rocking and rolling, teenage stuff really dominated.
One of the best voices ever. Thanks for this.
Johnny always sounded great. He had the voice and new how to use it to great sounds. His range was great as well.
Amazing! I didn't realize anyone was such a master with the microphone. I remember Sinatra criticizing Ella Fitzgerald for not using the microphone. But I never could tell it - I thought she was great! Thank you for this, Fil! Yet another eye-opening one.
Liked the explanation of vocal techniques used. Suggested how his career spanned decades.
He gives me goosebumps. Even when I was a little kid he gave me goosebumps.
Wow I didn't remember him until reading his name. Beautiful voice.
Johnny is fabulous! My #1 favorite.
Johnny has a smooth, classy, touching voice. U S A' s FINEST ! :)
His beautiful voice always reminds me of my mom. She loved his voice too. Thank you Fil.
Great information and I have always had great respect for his performances with that incredible voice. Thank you for a great analysis
I definitely went down a Johnny Mathis rabbit hole as a young singer. I really loved It's Not For Me To Say and Chances Are. He has such a unique voice and great breath control. Thank you as always for your thoughtful analysis. And I love the Gondor t-shirt!🖤🤘
Excellent analysis as usual Fil. Many thanks. Johnny was one of the great voices from my youth.
An effortless voice, so beautiful to listen to.
I loved listen to Johnny Mathis singing.❤️
Great American performer, such a distinctive voice.
JM's voice always reminded me a little of Robin Gibb's voice (obviously a different range) but that vibrato was there. Another great analysis Fil.
I thought so too! There is a tenderness and emotional resonance that both singers have.
I appreciated your analysis of my favorite singer. I know about his microphone technique & how he uses it to full advantage. He is amazing!
Elvis and Sinatra were great, but they had followings - they were bandwagons that people could jump onto. To me Johnny Mathis is just a GREAT voice. Belated thanks for doing this!!
A definite force in music. Fantastic vocals. Thank you Fil.
Excellent analysis on voice, interesting facts about him too🏃 Such a good performer, lovely voice. Thanks Fil😊🎼🎶
Thanks for this fantastic analysis of one of my favorite singer,s Fil! I loved Johnny's voice and singing. He never failed to entertain.
Such a great voice and performance
WL
Saw Johnny Mathis in Atlantic City in '98. Blown away! I'm not a fan but he was awesome. 👍
I looked at his discography and recognized a few songs. Never knew he was so successful. It would make a good trivia question.
Johnny Mathis started out in the 50s and can certainly belt out songs like no other and with his vibrato as in his voice. Amazing. The song that I heard that really sold me was "That Certain Smile." was so beautiful being sung by Johnny was so beautifully done.
Johnny Mathis sounds like the love of the universe to me.💖✨💫
I was fortunate to see him when his Man OF La Mancha album came out in 1966. He came to our college for the concert. We were amazed at his voice.
What a beautiful man ...I loved listening to him as a child such lovely memories for me
Another great analysis, Fil. My dad had the Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits album and I used to love to sing along with it. I still love all of Johnny's first hits...with his golden voice, they are timeless classics. .
Bravo! Awesome analysis and thanks for mentioning his high jump record!
Fil, you have one thing in common with Johnny Mathis you both peruses a music career over being a star athlete 🎸🎶
Wow! Johnny Mathis the best! Thank you, Fil!
Christmas number one the year i was born! 😃
BEAUTIFUL SONG
Always loved his warm and soft voice..thank you Fil for this ❤
He makes it sound completely effortless,no straining and wibbly-wobbly theatrics. I love how he throws the back of his throat open. He could have done that all the way through, but it would have been too much.
Fil, you've dropped another nostalgia bomb on me 🎤😵
When I was small I spent a lot of time at the home of a friend who was a latchkey kid (and a pretty good cook).
Such a uniquely beautiful voice! Great job, Fil!
Appreciate you Bro! As always you create the best analysis content I have ever seen!! Fil you are doing a amazing job In teaching us all about the achievement of properTone & true to it's amazing but true value in construction of music & in Vocals. You have a amazing talent! Seriously Ty for all your efforts and quality content! Cheers! Luv&Peace.
Beautiful ❤goosebumps
Hi Fil thank you for this I’m pleased you have done a video of Johnny’s work as I have loved his voice since the 60s
I remember throughout my youth Johnny Mathis on radio and TV. My parents loved his singing. An extraordinary talent and gentleman.
He is my number 1!!! My favorite from him is “Small World”.
