Thanks for bringing Andy back to our attention. I thought no one even knew who he was anymore. I was his road sound engineer for 4 year in the late 70's early 80's. He was not only a masterful vocalist, but a natural stand-up comedian and just a really nice guy.
@@covers_girl I never confused them. But they are similar. I can see it Perry Como was my first crush 😄 I totally loved him ‘Catch a shooting star and put it in your pocket’ 🎶

That tone, unsurpassed, and recorded so well (I always think better things about ribbon mics when I hear him, although I imagine a high end warm tube condenser, too). I watched his weekly TV show with my family for all of my school years. His voice sounds like Christmas. He was one of my first crushes, too. Very sharp dresser, for a "straight" guy (meant not counterculture lol) and seemed so funny and genuine, too.
Andy could sing anything and make it his own personal song with such great taste. He was such an elegant man. But wow, that timber is so deeply beautiful and rich.all the way to the burnished hues that melt everyone's hearts. Bravo Andy.
Oh. My. Goodness! Every time you do one of these greats, I am blown away that you'd "bother". Most of the younger generation (I'm 61) have no concept of just how good these old-timey vocalists actually were! Thank you so much for what you do! I knew all these artists were good...but you've shown the differences and just...the excellence these artists had! Thank you, Fil!
Thank you for sharing My late mother would always cry when she heard this song. 💔😰 Married to my father for 74 years, and both passed away at 92. Blessed, neither had cancer, nor Alzheimer's 🛐. 🤗🙏🇺🇲😎
Wow 74 years, amazing. My mother, who also loved Andy Williams, died on the day of my parents 57th wedding anniversary. She died quickly, so thankful for that. My father died after a long illness at 94 years old.
Ahh! My heart-throb in the 60s and 70s. His voice was like honey poured into velvet. I would use my babysitting money to buy his LPs and played them endlessly. Our family never missed his weekly show and always looked forward to his family Christmas Specials. He had many other singers on and I especially loved Antonio Carlos Jobim. Thank you Fil!

My family and I have seen him in concert perhaps a half a dozen times in Branson, Missouri. My daughter and I danced to his song “Moon River” at her wedding.
"He can do anything..." Fil that says it all about Andy Williams. I recommend the medley of Burt Bacharach songs, with Bacharach on the piano, in Andy's TV show. Williams displayed an astounding agility moving from one song to the next without stopping. And it was done live.

This rock rhythm and blues lover is so glad you are sharing this analysis of Andy Williams. A voice like his is one every music lover should hear. Love how you break it down so we can fully appreciate this man’s talent. I grew up with my mother singing Moon River to me at bedtime.

I'm glad you did Andy, his range, pitch and breath control are unparalleled. One of the best examples of this is his performance of Danny Boy. His version of Speak Softly Love is also sublime.
Thank you for sharing Andy Williams and this song. He sings so effortlessly and smoothly. When I was 9 years old, my parents (aka Santa Claus) brought my first phonograph with 5 albums , one of which was Andy,s “The Shadow of Your Smile”. How I loved that Album front and back. Such a great singer and entertainer. ♥️
What a nice tribute you've done here, Fil. Thank you. When I was a kod, I remember watching him on TV, but he was considered "square" [un-hip] & he was my parents' age. But... you could never argue the man's ability to SING. Also: Love hearing YOU sing along as well. You are so talented AND educational!
Totally un-hip. The definition of un-hip. But the man could sing beautifully. Sing you right to sleep. Even MY parents found him too un-hip to watch his TV specials, and they were not hippies.
Thank you, Fil for introducing Andy Williams to perhaps younger folks who don't remember how talented he was. He had a great show. He was funny and introduced other talents.
I always loved his voice but really was not into him. I was 18 in 1971 but my dad would play all the singers such as him. My dad loved music and would put the speakers on our front porch and just blast the music. He liked the big band sounds so you can imagine how all of us 9 kids were so embarrassed at that time. Lol Now I appreciate all kinds of music.
You have so expertly unpacked so many of the elements of why Andy was a "people mover." His mastery of pitch, dynamics, perfect use of vibrato, soaring range and sheer vocal beauty would leave only the flint hearted unmoved. Listening to him at his best was a moving and emotional experience. Your insightful analysis is spot on. Thank you
Thank you so very much for this analysis. Like many of the other commenters, he was my favorite. The first record album I purchased for myself at the age of 8 or 9 was Andy Williams. I was patiently waiting to see his singing on your pitch monitor. I knew he was perfection, but it's nice to see the scientific proof of it. Thank you for highlighting his range and dynamics. He sang a great variety of genres and always blended well with his varied guests. He was known to be a very kind person. Thank you so much for this video.
Another thorough, intelligent, accessible analysis, thanks Fil! Your recognition and appreciation of (often) critically underappreciated artists (e.g., Andy, Karen Carpenter, Glen Campbell) is a joy. After my hard/psychedelic/prog rock phase I could finally start to appreciate the phenomenal artistry of these folks. Andy's voice not only engages me, it's just plain lovely. Keep on rockin' it!
My parents started me listening to Andy Williams back in the '50s. The song that shows his best is Andy singing with Simon and Garfunkel, all three singing, "Scarborough Fair". Thanks for bring back very old memories.
My mom & dad's favorite artist and I grew up listening to him throughout the 60's, sadly by 71 they were already divorced, but his voice is forever imprinted in my young memories. This song reverberates with my marriage of 30 years; and I enjoy hearing him again.
Grew up on Andy Williams! I remember mom and dad always playing Andy Williams! Love Story is one of the most beautiful films ever and I still cry watching it! ❤️
wow surprised you even know of this guy. He had three brothers who could belt em out too. In the US his Christmas songs are still very popular and during the season they are constantly played on radio stations
Most Wonderful Time is easily his best song. Great singer. Good friend of Sammy and that crew. Classic Pop gets overlooked, but it's as great as the classic rock of the era.
Phil I so appreciate your diversity of appreciation for all sorts of different artists. Many people Pooh Pooh Andy for being a schmaltzy crooner but he was very talented and thanks for the reminder.
Thank you for pointing out the use of voice position (head v. chest), dynamics (p to ff), and vocal expression (lyrical v. operatic). Wow! Great analysis of one of the most treasured voices of the 20th century. He remains one of my favorites to mimic when I practice octave pitch production. Nice!
Oh, yeah, Andy Williams. I liked the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, but we had one TV in the house. So we'd watch Andy Williams a lot. And everyone watched open mouthed, leaning forward, leaning back...what a voice. Your analysis was so detailed without drawing attention to yourself, since you are demonstrating the techniques. But at the end, you did a hell of a performance. Bravo, Fil. Maybe that's why I subbed to your channel 268k subscribers ago. And this was really one of your vintage videos. Even you use that newfangled gadget...which I have grown to love. The song, the analysis, then a brief history. You are the best. Merci beaucoup.
:)...Thanks for the analysis... I'm 62, My father, who just passed in June, Loved Andy... Thanks for the upload, I haven't thought about Andy for many years...But; You made me remember my pop.. .~a tear~
Andy Williams was one of my mum's favourite singers alongside Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. The family would watch his TV variety show that was broadcast on Monday nights, us kids loved the zany comedy sketches that were unlike anything we had in the UK. The running gags with General Custer covered in arrows, comedienne Ruth Buzzy and of course the talking Bear who always wanted.a cookie. The young Osmond's featured on his show as did his twin nephews , Andy & David Williams who were moderately successful here and in the UK. Canadian Andy started singing as part of a vocal group with his brothers in the 1940s. He became one of the biggest male vocal stars of the 60s and 70s.There are dozens of fantastic clips available on YT of Andy performing with guest who appeared on his show- most of which are truly live vocal performances and are excellent! Well worth seeking them out. Andy's only UK No1 Butterfly has been almost forgotten in favour of other hits which have become iconic. Surprisingly his signature song Moon River was never a UK hit for Andy. His version of Can't Take My Eyes Off You was one of his biggest UK hits while the original Frankie Valli version flopped here.
Thanks for the nice review of Andy. His records and singing are usually dismissed as junk by collectors , radio stations, and record shops these days. Reading all the positive comments from your viewers is great.
I don't believe I missed an episode of Andy's TV show. I loved watching the Osmonds/Brothers grow up on his show. I have several of his albums from back then.
I've heard Andy sing this sweet love song on the radio and live on television. Of course, Andy sings THE quintessential Christmas tune -- "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." "Moon River" -- in memory of my Ma and my Dad. Many thanks, Andy Williams and Phil Henley. Phil, I've heard that you were unwell. I pray and hope you feel better soon.
@@lelleithmurray235 it's not about dues, it's about the popularity of a Christmas song - Mariah Carey dominates that race and has for decades, anyone who thinks Andy Williams does needs to step a toe outside of their retirement home at least once a decade.
Battle of the Quintessential Christmas Song! Well, of course, each person has his/her favorite, probably greatly dependent on age, family traditions, religious attitudes, and personal "taste". My family (Grannie, Mom, and Dad) and I watched every variety show and Christmas TV special on the 3 TV channels that existed. Age-wise Grannie was born in 1880, Mom and Dad in 1916, and me in 1954. Just a note: my mother and I sang in school choirs through grade school, junior high, and senior high and we sang a LOT of Christmas songs touring our city. Here are my criteria for my selection: * There are secular Christmas songs and religious Christmas songs. I'm making the selection from religious because Christmas started as a religious celebration. * Singers - There are more current songsters and there are those from the past. I'm going with the past - those who had TV variety shows and a special Christmas show. So, it's der Bingle (hey, Bing sang with David Bowie on The Little Drummer Boy), Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Perry Como. * The song had to appeal to each of my 3 family generations. With these selection criteria my choice of Quintessential Christmas Song is "O Holy Night" as sung by any of the singers listed above. There is no Christmas hymn that soars more than this beautiful and difficult song. It requires soto voce, "belt", wide pitch range, and an ability to convey the meaning of the song. Each of the singers above does all that. Pick your favorite singer or enjoy each one and listen to this meaningful song over this Christmas Season.
@@marthawelch4289 Wow! You expressed the art of song so eloquently! I was called upon to sing in grade school musicals. I even sang in a version of the old minstrel shows. I lived in England for a while. We listened to American singers such as Andy Williams. We also listened quite a bit to Matt Monro -- Sinatra's favorite. Yeah, my folks liked "Der Bingle" as well! Take care, dear gal. Happy Christmas 2022 to you and to yours.
oh Andy Williams - such a beautiful voice. Also had great family Christmas television shows for many years. I think the past analysis with Andy and Simon & Garfunkel was Scarborough Fair/Canticle.

Hello from Nottingham. I was born in 1960 and Andy played massive part of my formative years. I was fortunate to see him in what must’ve been the 2007 tour here in Nottingham. He tottered onto the stage, and I thought oh no… and the first note he sang was absolutely dreadful but then it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before or since it was like the years slipped from him and he was younger right before us and his voice became strong just like the recordings it was a totally marvellous concert, one I will never forget. Thank you for covering him and thank you Andy Williams.

Beautiful music. I love how he sings Moon River ✨♡
Loved Andy.Like many singers of the day he had his own variety show.He had a great sense of humor as well.
Andy Williams Show was first performance on The Osmonds, as well as the Jackson 5
LOVE Andy Williams -- grew up watching him on TV. Got to see him two times doing his Christmas show in Branson -- which was awesome! Thank you Fil !
This one really shows the incredible range of Andy's amazing baritone. I love the modulations in this arrangement.
Thanks Fil . As a kid think I was in love with Andy - he certainly entertained my young ears .. now I know why 😊🙇♀️👍❤️🙏
I always loved his voice but really was not into him. I was 18 in 1971 but my dad would play all the singers such as him. My dad loved music and would put the speakers on our front porch and just blast the music. He liked the big band sounds so you can imagine how all of us 9 kids were so embarrassed at that time. Lol
Now I appreciate all kinds of music.
Thank you for this one. A true legend who lives on through his music.
Thank you
Oh, I had almost forgotten about Andy Williams and that beautiful voice!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marvelous! Thank you!
What a voice he had. Love Andy Williams. Moon River is a beautiful song and his signature song. 🎶🎶. Listening to his Christmas CD right now. 🎄
My parents started me listening to Andy Williams back in the '50s. The song that shows his best is Andy singing with Simon and Garfunkel, all three singing, "Scarborough Fair". Thanks for bring back very old memories.
Agreed. A great moment.
@@lawrencetaylor4101 Well that and Moon River.
My mom & dad's favorite artist and I grew up listening to him throughout the 60's, sadly by 71 they were already divorced, but his voice is forever imprinted in my young memories. This song reverberates with my marriage of 30 years; and I enjoy hearing him again.
I love that you appreciate vocal technique skill no matter the genre.
Grew up on Andy Williams! I remember mom and dad always playing Andy Williams! Love Story is one of the most beautiful films ever and I still cry watching it! ❤️
The movie is corny as can be Andy and the song are great..one man's opinion.
I love this song so much. Andy was a wonderful performer and such a singer! Thanks Fil
wow surprised you even know of this guy. He had three brothers who could belt em out too. In the US his Christmas songs are still very popular and during the season they are constantly played on radio stations
Andy sings Christmas songs better than them all..I like Bing and Dean and Frank..and Perry, but Andy..Whew!
Andy Williams was big in the U.K. His show was broadcast for several years and we first saw the Osmonds on it.
Nice!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Fil! We love you!
Great man, great singer.
Thanks for the upload, I haven't thought about Andy for many years...But; You made me remember my pop..
.~a tear~
Andy was my mum's favourite. I bought tickets for her and my dad to see Andy on his last UK tour. Moon River was played at her funeral.
I'm so glad I caught this, Fil. What a pleasure to hear your analysis of a vocalist that often gets forgotten. My mom loved him.
It's such a beautiful song 🎶🎶🎶
Good grief. What a blast from the past. This certainly takes me back. 👍 He was one of my mum’s favourites.
Andy was born in the USA in Wall Lake Iowa
Thanks for the nice review of Andy. His records and singing are usually dismissed as junk by collectors , radio stations, and record shops these days. Reading all the positive comments from your viewers is great.
Thanks for analyzing Andy’s singing, which is extraordinary 🙏👍
I don't believe I missed an episode of Andy's TV show. I loved watching the Osmonds/Brothers grow up on his show. I have several of his albums from back then.
Andy Williams defines smooth. It's not the holidays until I hear The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
THE quintessential Christmas song?? don't let Mariah Carey hear you say that.
@@Marcel_Audubon got to go with Walter on this one. Andy has been paying his dues since before Mariah was born.
Here are my criteria for my selection:
* There are secular Christmas songs and religious Christmas songs.
One of the greats
Such a beautiful song. One that I hadn't heard since my childhood. I'll definitely be diving into & enjoying more of Andy's work now.
I absolutely love his voice. Always have.
One of the best!!! Love his voice. When I was a young girl Moon River was popular 💓
Thank you so much, Fil, for your analysis of Andy Williams, my favorite vocal artist. I was hoping some day you would feature him, and you did! I enjoyed this video very much. 💜💚
I love this song.. Talk about a power house voice.. I got to see him in concert in the early 80's
Unfortunately I was never much a fan of Andy Williams. However, I am a big fan of you Fil. You have an eclectic taste in diverse genres of popular music. I admire you.
His ending floors me. Such vocal control!!
Another fascinating analysis of a a fabulous singer from the past. Thank you, Fil! Love these!
Thank you so much Fil, for another great musical analysis😁👍⭐️ !!! I have been a fan of Andy Williams since I can remember, I feel like when he’s singing his voice just soars ; and he’s so accomplished and although I did not know him, personally, it’s well known that his personality was as well wonderful.
He’s one of my favorites, as I mentioned, and yes this generation now maybe never heard of him but, those of us who remember and appreciate and still listen, we keep his music alive and also keep him in our hearts as well. Many of the musicians that you feature, educate the younger people to the ones that they may never have listened to before and their eyes are opened!!!
Thank you again for bringing to us all this joy !!! ….music is to me , life itself. !!!❤️👏👏👏👏😁😁😁😁
i used to like music immensely but now i just plane love it for i appreciate the prowess and skill of the artist . yes sir.
