- Thanks to Handheld Obsession for lending us the TinyNES! Find his channel here: lon.tv/handheldobsession. The TinyNES is an open source NES console that uses the original NES CPU and PPU. It offers great compatibility and clean video output but lacks any modern video output options. See more retro: lon.tv/retro and subscribe! lon.tv/s

Sorry I missed the live stream! Great review of the TinyNES
Thanks for letting us borrow one !
This is really, really cool! Thanks for covering this!
Amazing, just goes to show how far tech has come. I would like to see a new case for this with an NES and a Famicom theme. I’m sure you can install an RGB mod into this such as Etims RGB Board but the case probably wouldn’t be able to fit it.
It’s a nice little machine, very well designed and the add on to secure your carts looks good (something analogue could learn from…), but it being composite out only is unfortunate, especially at this price point. You may as well go for the AVS which also plays famicom carts.
Neat. My biggest challenge is getting my current games to work on my NES console. I think everything needs a really good cleaning that I haven’t had time to get around to.
Boil the connector and it worked for me
Lon, I think you meant to use the word “Anyone” instead of “Everyone” in the title. 😂
Looks very good. I can't believe that's composite.
Reminds me of the original Analogue Nt which was not an FPGA but built around real CPUs & GPUs taken away from original Famicoms.
Yes very true! I totally forgot about that original variant!
The original Analogue NT had component and SCART video outputs, with the option to add HDMI. This thing has no reason to exist.
From my understanding the original nt still had problems though like scratching cartridges. So far no one has really built a perfect system built with real nes chips.
@@ericochoa4034 My Nt is perfect to me: no scratch on my cartridges but i am very careful. I have the Famicom red version. It is gorgeous and it is the perfect size to join it with a Family Disk System. A beauty.
Correct and I purchased two of them when originally released. I sent them back to Analogue then they announced the HDMI option was available and they added it for free
Was thinking of ordering one of these to add to my test bench. Did a search and see this review was posted 40 min ago. what luck! Thanks for the great review.
I like how you said, "A normal person wouldn't notice a difference..."! 😛 Great review as always, Lon.
Now many of the old peripherals, such as Nintendo's own Zapper Gun, the NES Controller 2 (a.k.a. I rather prefer both the front loader toaster NES and the top loader NES.
Yeah, this doesn't seem complete. Not sure why you would want to do this if it doesn't add HDMI. Just because it makes the NES small and not need the power brick? One other thing that might justify the price is if they added a multi-tap to the board as well, just have 3 and 4 controller ports on the side. I know of two HDMI add-ons available for the NES so those should be able to just be added on. Not sure if there is an open-source multi-tap though. Hopefully someone figures this out. I'd even be happy with a slightly larger case if it added HDMI and mult-tap. This would be ideal for me as I have a water-damaged NES, not sure if the CPU and PPU works but the board is really rusty other than the chips so I could rescue the chips and through them into one of these. I'll wait for someone to add HDMI and hopefully a multi-tap.
I have original front loader nes and works fine with my upscale retrotink 2x so I guess I can skip for now....
I prefer the Famicom Toploader with a Rad2X Cable. I also love my Feihao HDMI Famicom handheld from Ali-Express. I play with my NES Online controller using an 8bitdo NES Dongle and a Famicom to NES Mayflash controller adapter.
@@edmundroth6337 You probably want a Hyperkin Retron 2 HDMI.
I like the fact it uses the original nes technology. HDMI would have been nice, but it's not a deal breaker with me. But the death grip is. But I can't justify spending $230.
Hopefully someone comes out with an HDMI version, but in the mean time it's a good space saver for anyone with an older NES taking up too much room on their shelf.
I would recommend just getting a hold of CRT. Play it the way it was meant to be played.
@@8bitnation419 It's a good solution if you already have a CRT, but getting one of those now isn't cheap or easy.
@@8bitnation419 I would recommend getting hold of an Analogue NT Mini and an LG OLED tv. Play it the way it was really meant to be played. 🎉
@@zoiks6631 It was always meant for a CRT, just look at Dracula’s face on Symphony of the Night on a CRT vs a modern tv. The way it blends in the pixels, you need really good scan lines to replicate that. But don’t get me wrong i love the modern crystal clear emulator like look of modern tv’s, but CRT is better in many cases due to no lag and how it displays the pixels.
If there is a old nes not working all for this.
I wouldn't wreck a totally good console. For this.
This is why i am all for fpga, emulation.
They should get good chips remade.
Would be awsome to go to a gameshop and pick up a console local brand new.
thats the cleanest composite ive seen.
hope they make a snes version
I hate these devices that have a DEATH GRIP on cartridges. Honestly, if feels like you’re ruin them over time!? Not worth it IMHO.
Agreed! You can hear the pins scraping as you pull the carts out.
Do original NESes get harmed in the creation of these products?
I have one. From what I understand, they are sourcing the original chips from "broken" NES systems on ebay.
Lon, you don't have a CRT in that man cave?!
I have a little one but it doesn't cooperate with my cameras! My upstairs man cave has a nice one.
When saying original hardware, does that mean these chips were manufactured back in the 80's??
Yes these were manufactured during the NES's lifecycle.
That is very interesting and I especially love it's sleek design! However, for it's price you can literally get yourself a Hyperkin 5.
I think it’s interesting but… not better than a Retro AVS, Mini Noir, MiSTer or a modded top loader. At that price buy something that does more than this.
Very awesome project but I can't justify the price vs. just picking up an original NES for ~$50. I say this as a retro enthusiast, fwiw. Cheers,
Agreed
composite, keep on moving

P.s the iPad Air m1 is good
$230? Bbwwwuuhahahaha
Not for that price, would rather get an original console for less, and do a video mod.
It’s because of the motherboard, case and all of the new components. Your essentially paying for a new console.
Lets be honest, real men don't play Nintendo.
Why does this even exist? At first I was like 'ehh why?' Then you show the back and no hdmi?!? Wtf why was this made? 🤣😂
