This is an old post, but I just wanted to say that just because a person is smiling and casually talking about their trauma doesn't necessarily mean they've come to terms with it or found some sort of inner peace.
For some people, they sometimes emotionally detach from themselves or dissociate. And if this is something they've talked a lot about, especially with a professional, it's easier to repeat their story. Some people also have a tendency to smile while talking about their bad experiences as a sort of coping method, defense mechanism, to minimize their own experiences, to avoid pity, or to appease others. It's complicated.

I mean it's creepy to me too but it's also cultural. from what I've seen of the show toddlers and tiaras not all the parents bleach their teeth, normally they just have them wear fake teeth while performing. And they use fake tanner, they don't bring them to tanning beds. Plus the pageants on toddlers and tiaras aren't the only kind of pageants, there are other pageants where the fake hair, sparkly dresses etc arent allowed and aren't viewed favorably. Personally I don't see any reason to have your small child being judged on their appearance in any way but I'm not from a culture where that's normal so I don't feel like I fully get it.

I can relate to so much of what she is saying. I grew up with my mom bleaching my hair from age 4-5 because she wanted a blonde hair blue eyed daughter. I have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. My oldest brother was blonde hair blue eyed and she wanted all of her kids to look like him.
I finally got out until I was in a car accident that left me permanently disabled and now unable to leave her again. Listening to her validate the experiences I've had has helped tremendously. I'm so glad she was freed from her shackles and is able to heal.

I had a great mother. I didn't appreciate how much she did for me about which I didn't know at the time. That being said, my mother was beautiful and my older brother was very good looking. My daddy was charming. I was neither. My mother tried. Curly hair was a thing in 1958 and my hair was very straight. A regular permanent wave didn't work on me so I was taking to the beauty parlor for a "heat wave". Not only is this a terrifying experience, but it didn't work on me very well. My hair would frizz for a few weeks and then go right back to straight as a board. Looking back it would have been hilarious if I hadn't been so afraid of the machine.

I had a mother like this. W/each video of Jeanettes I see hers+mine have more & more in common. Just the title of her book when I heard about it resonated w/me. My mother was SO infatuated w/herself & SO very vain Vanity is #1 to them. She took at least 2hrs to get ready for work or even being at home- everything had to be a very specific way. I was forced to help her get ready which meant shed wake me up at 4am, from a very young age. IMHO she was a narcissist at the least- bragged about her looks all the time to me & everyone whod listen, esp about her weight bc she was thin. Her expectation of perfection from me was on another level which is common for narcissists. My mother also put me in a few pageants as a teen which I sucked at bc my self esteem was completely eroded & shed always make me leave rehearsals early to do things for her. I went no contact yrs before she died however when she did it def helped my healing journey that I had been working thru for many years. Kudos to her for speaking out & writing this book!

Fortunately ever since I moved out and went low contact with her she has reflected on her behavior and even apologized for much of it, she has become a much better mom and we have a good relationship now. Even so, it sucks to see she still puts herself through the same process because her controlling behavior came from her own eating disorder and need to control her looks because that was what my grandma taught her.
