Anna Ortiz from ugly Betty once said when she was a struggling actress/waitress Drew would come in and was kind to everyone and would always tip 100 percent of her bill. I think that says a lot about her. You hear stories of powerful people treating working class people as less than. But she seems to be kind to everyone regardless of their social status.

      Later on, when she went off to college she actually thanked me for it all, for being around more rather than working harder to give her things. She still tells me that she feels she learned a lot more about life, budgeting, and being responsible than had I been more well off.

    I love her vulnerability so much. When she’s looking at her childhood home with tears and talking about her loneliness, it made me look at her performance in Grey Gardens with even more admiration because that movie was probably therapeutic yet very hard for her to delve back into those emotions again. She’s always looking to examine her emotions and improve herself, such a beautiful person.

    I was about 14 years old when I read Drew's autobiography and I've felt a connection with her ever since...
    But nothing could have ever made me feel more connected to her than her sentiment about books, just then. Even if I didn't know her life story, that would have given it away, enough: I see your heart, Drew. Only a true reader knows this kind of reverence, and recognizes it for what it is. • @Izzy-cp8yt
      @Izzy-cp8yt 2 года назад +16

      @@JazzyB9481 it's not that simple. You have to make yourself a safe person for your kids to talk to if you ever want them to actually share the deep things in their head. By the time I was in middle school I knew I couldn't talk to my mom about the things I was thinking, because there was so much judgement and shaming if I didn't behave exactly the way she wanted me to. By the time I was in high school I was leading two different lives - the one she saw, and the one my friends saw. There were so many things I was dealing with as a teenager that she will probably never know about, because by the time I was dealing with those things I knew the only true support system I had was my friends, because going to my mom meant more judgment, more shame, and likely losing privileges over stupid things. So yeah, theoretically the answer is "talk to them", but that only works if prior to that you've made yourself someone they can feel safe telling the truth to. Otherwise you're just going to get "I'm fine, I'm okay".

    I spent 3 days in a mental institution and it was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I cannot fathom a year and a half in there. My heart just breaks but is also so grateful that she shares her experiences. I hope one day to meet her and give her a big hug.

      @lo_341 Unfortunately back in the 2000s it was less about medical need and more about having parents who could pay. The troubled teen industry heavily exploited scared parents and made millions doing it.

      I totally feel you on that! Being a teen in the 2000s was so hard and a whirlwind of craziness and immorality! We were victims of a broken system that took advantage of any teen who was so called not normal or troubled. I have had old wounds resurface from those years and it’s been so hard :(

      @@libertygiveme1987 In 1984 my parents committed me when I was 14 years old because they wanted to go overseas and I couldn’t be taken out of school. It was easier for them to pay $3,500 a day to have me institutionalized for nine months. Why do I know the cost? Because my Mom threw it in my face for years, leaving out the part about them using a rehab as a babysitter. I got myself a child advocacy attorney and got myself out of there, then I left home and never went back. Sometimes you have to rescue yourself because nobody else is willing to

    OMG I took over Drew’s apartment where she lived in when she was 14 years old. She moved out and left a lot of kitchen and personal items, which I donated to Goodwill. Laura Flynn Boyle lived upstairs and she was dating Mark Walberg who used to park his Porsche in my parking space. I loved that apartment and it helped me settle after my divorce and before I moved to Europe to join the United Nations.
