Since the legalization of same-sex marriage, statistics have been kept regarding violence in same-sex marriages. The amount of violence in female/female marriages far outpaced the amount of violence in male/female marriages. In male/male marriages the amount of domestic violence is very low. It appears that women are much more violent in relationships than men.

Nothing is perfect, ever. But they're doing such a better job overall and by pointing out their fringe/outlier situations isn't doing anything other than creating another sensational piece. Life is not perfect and no country is. But they're doing well.

Do you guys in the comments agree with what that first school is doing? As a gay man myself, when I was a kid I wished people would stop telling me what activities I should like and do based on my gender. But that seems to me exactly what these Icelandic teachers are doing… why can’t they just let kids decide for themselves if they want to play log or brush hair…? Is a girl who likes to brush hair a “weak woman”? And is a boy who likes to throw logs a problem to be solved? I don’t understand that at all.
They showed a few minutes of a whole school week and you think it's all that there is? This is a school, a school should show/teach kids stuff they won't learn in their normal environment. This is about education after all.
Well that school is only one tiny part of the kids' life. The kids are/will be exposed to the majority of the world that forces traditional gender roles. In this sexist world, it is impossible for kids to make a decision free from sexism. So yes, it is absolutely necessary to do the "compensation work"
As an American woman, I cried and cried watching this. I even served in the military here. I did the same jobs as men and did them well. But my country still treats me and my daughters worse than a dog.

I like the idea, but men who do this do really get accepted by women. I understand women may say they want more expressive women, but in reality in the US this kind of male behavior gives women the ick. If you are a man who wants a loving and long lasting relationship with a women, this is not the way to behave.
Iceland has a much broader definition of rape than other countries, so the fact that they report a rate of 25% doesn’t necessarily mean that women there are in more danger, as by their definition most countries would have significantly higher rates of rape.

I don't know about Iceland, but you can't pay people differently based on gender here in the US. It's illegal. In the US we have lawyers everywhere. If a company every tried to pay a woman less here just because she was a women, they would get sued quickly.

In the USA, as 6th grade students (back in the nineteen seventies) we took both woodworking and shop class for half the year AND home economics baking and sewing classes for the second half of the year, both male and female took BOTH shop and home economics. Makes perfect sense. They just started the program Back then. I don’t know what is happening now though. My sister being a year older was stuck taking Only home economics. Clearly All opportunities should be equally available to all. And Basic skills are needed regardless of the false “gender” stereotyping.

I want to live in Iceland, and I hate cold weather. I will brave it to be living in a brave new world. This could never happen here. We don't think enough of each other in the US to come together to help us all. We have been and are made to separate ourselves in every manner possible. There exist not only generational contradictions but even within the nuclear family, siblings of varying ages have vast experiences of education and socialization. It is a start and stop process of progression and regression.

Because currently the imbalance is so great that course correcting to some looks like an upending of ‘hierarchies’ which is how too many individuals are wired- there is such an unconscious internal bias *towards* patriarchy that individuals will start claiming all kinds of negativity as the imbalance is addressed, men in particular as they sense it means a ‘loss of power’ because male dominator culture has a very specific idea of what ‘power’ is.
Kudos to Iceland for all their work to close the gender gap. What I did not see in this broadcast is the men's side - are they being taught to treat women fairly, so that they won't consider violence against women? Both women and men need to know their worth, and how to be kind as well as powerful. Thank you for this look at Iceland 😊
Really inspiring. I love the idea of the education scheme that creates space for girls to be strong and take-up space. Men need to be fixed to stop violence against women and girls. Their education for respecting women, consent and the law should start when they are boys, it seems, and this push needs to come from our governments. Education on what healthy relationships are I believe is the key here.

Gender roles are taught indeed! However we also need to recognize the difference between boys/men and girls/women in physical and psychological situations.
Men and women are way more similar than we are different, and the differences are varied. Like its weird people focus so much on "we need to acknowledge we are different" like nobody is going around saying we need ti verbally state how different gay and straight relationships are. Because they're not that different and it's weird, it's almost like you're trying to focus still on rhe minor differences even in discussions of basic equality. We don't need to break things down by gender. We can just break things down by the fact of people are difference. Men can be different from other men. Women can be different from other women. It's weird to assume you have more in common with a random man from Africa than a woman from your own country. Our major differences are not gender based

They can have their either mother or father's name now as a prefix to dóttir or son, it is the same for men and women. I think this change came about through the efforts of women's rights movements. Most happy to be corrected by Icelanders if needed

In the same way that most of the rest of the world is equally sad for the girls... The rest of the world doesn't try to change because it's still run by men, and men are quite happy on top. At least Iceland is doing something to change that and create more equality. I think they'll see benefits in years to come - less violence and crime, more care for the underprivileged (homeless etc), more care for our environment (any care would be good!), a more equal sharing of the global wealth that is mostly and increasingly held by a very few men!!!. Women with a global voice would help these issues, that men say are unfixable. We need women to have more say in this world on a global level, otherwise many of the really bad trends that have been worsening over the last several decades will continue to get worse , run by only a handful of men, until there's nothing left worth having or living for. Research provides proof that women, given the chance to make a difference in their lives, make those kinds of changes far FAR, FAAAAR better than men. And for that, we need a gender equal society, and I would argue that that needs to happen very quickly now because we are running out of time.

They can have their either mother or father's name now as a prefix to dóttir or son, it is the same for men and women. I think this change came about through the efforts of women's rights movements. Most happy to be corrected by Icelanders if needed

In the same way that most of the rest of the world is equally sad for the girls...
The rest of the world doesn't try to change because it's still run by men, and men are quite happy on top. At least Iceland is doing something to change that and create more equality. I think they'll see benefits in years to come - less violence and crime, more care for the underprivileged (homeless etc), more care for our environment (any care would be good!), a more equal sharing of the global wealth that is mostly and increasingly held by a very few men!!!. Women with a global voice would help these issues, that men say are unfixable. We need women to have more say in this world on a global level, otherwise many of the really bad trends that have been worsening over the last several decades will continue to get worse , run by only a handful of men, until there's nothing left worth having or living for. Research provides proof that women, given the chance to make a difference in their lives, make those kinds of changes far FAR, FAAAAR better than men. And for that, we need a gender equal society, and I would argue that that needs to happen very quickly now because we are running out of time.

Much sadder for all the girls in history who were told (and are STILL told) they weren't capable, though...
