  • AUTOMOBILE COMPRESSOR OIL🚘🚙🚔🚓 PART 1
There are two categories of oils used in automobile air conditioning system, which are :
MINERAL OIL: This oil was used in compressors before 1990, working best with R-12 refrigerant. It was widely used back then. However, when R-134a dominated the market, a new PAG oil was introduced to work smoothly with this fluid. Although mineral oil is not used anymore, it is still compatible with Alkyl-benzene oil (AB) and can replace it in some cases.
SYNTHETIC OIL: These are made in laboratories due to chemical reactions. There are four types of synthetic fluids, which are commonly used in automotive cooling systems.
    These are:
    ‣ PAG (Poly-Alkylene-Glycol Oil): It has been used in cars since 1995 and works best with R-134a. It is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs the water molecules and makes the oil acidic in nature. This oil is chemically stable even at high temperatures but cannot be used with hybrid electrically-driven compressors.
    ‣ Alkyl-Benzene Oil (AB): This oil was used in cars built before 1994. It works well with R-12 but not with R-134a. This oil does not absorb moisture and was used as a substitute for certain PAG oils.
    ‣ POE Oil (Polyol-Ester Oil): This oil was used for retrofitting cars that were converted from an R-12 to an R-134a system. POE oil was used as a substitute for PAG oil. It has excellent insulating properties, which prevents the electric short circuit of the electrically-driven compressor.
    ‣ PAO Oil (Polyalphaolefin Oil): This oil has very low hygroscopic properties and is compatible with many fluids and refrigerants.
PAO oils are typically used in passenger cars and also in many industrial applications.
