In Australia we use the Hilux as a work vehicle, we don't use it as a fulltime offroad vehicle.' Hilux is about range, its a diesel, so we update the fuel tank with a long range tank and that can get us 1000 plus kilometers with great economy. We use it to traverse Australia, we don't use petrol or gas trucks for long range driving.
Drove a landcruiser prado diesel in iceland this year for ~1000 miles. Amazing. My country is full of stupid people and bad governance so we can't have these lovely diesels...
I ony have a few comments to make: First, I know you said multiple times, but the tires really set the limits for this truck. Second this is different than the TRDs, it is something that put reliability and simplicity before off road performance. And finally, outside a few special markets like the USA, Australia and parts of the Middle East, off-roading, as a hobby is very rare due, mainly to cost. So this truck, even tough parades itself as a sporty truck, acts more as a lifestyle truck for its buyers. It hasn´t been developed enough to really compete with the Ranger Raptor. It won´t go as far, and it won´t be as confortable; but it´ll bring you back. And it still keeps the best of Toyotas: Reliability, simplicity, and resell value
In Chile mining companies buy thousands of hiluxes a year and all of them live offroad and load way more than Gvwr yet they still stand up to it. Really tough little trucks
@@fanboiahoy260 What are you talking about, i bought a mining hilux with 200ks on it, has almost 400k on it now, lives offroad and towing 2.5k and its still absolutely solid, im amazed by how durable it is, nothings broken other than the clutch
The roads of Iceland are littered with both, as each are common rentals. I was just there in a Duster. It's a bit crap to drive, but honest, practical, and returned 45 mpg US. Such a great little rig for muddy lanes and Icelandic sheep transport.
Ryan, I got my Hilux end 23 with the 2.8 D and changed the wheels directly for Yokohama At Tires with the snowflake symbol, all terrain, all weather, ice and snow. Now it is perfect 😢 Yes it is old school like me. 63 years, retired and driving a pick-up instead a 911. I love this truck 😊
These are King of the hill in Kenya. They maintain that no nonsense, hardy and tough quality that gave the brand it's name.. So it will still survive in the bush but adds a bit of soft-life touches for evolving tastes, and better manners and appearance for the city.
Pretty cool that You visited Europe to test our most reliable truck. You can use it as a tractor on the farm and still don't break it. Great review. Greetings
There is one country in North America that gets the Hilux, Mexico... the Hilux sells really well here. Though it is the work truck for us here, the Tacoma is the more upmarket and used for fun truck
You touched on the two key points: outside of the US, off-roading for leisure is not as popular and the owner of this type of vehicle typically seeks reliability / durability / economy over outright capability. Pickup ownership as a personal vehicle is not really wide spread for many reasons, including the fact that this is not a very practical vehicle to daily drive given price, size and fuel economy. Offroad enthusiasts certainly exist, but they are out in a modified vehicle that cost the equivalent of $650 - $6,500, not $65,000. Australia is different in this aspect. Arab world is different and wild...
That is a real generalisation…Here in South Africa you cannot drive 1km without passing numerous Double cab 4x4s and.SUVs ,all brand new and kitted…(not $650 - 6500)Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux,VW Amarok , Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and all the new Chinese offerings too…OffRoading for leisure is hugely popular….that is why so many brands like AluCab ,Smartcap and FrontRunner (to name a few) come from South Africa… This is also a great place to test a Jimny…we recently had a Jimny Gathering of 800… Oh and we use those 4x4 s as daily drivers….the best selling vehicle overall is the Hilux with the Ranger in 2nd place…in terms of double cabs , Ranger sells the most… They are buggers to park and we all park at furthest points in the mall…leaving a bay open between us😂
Yes get the vehicles outside of America that are not sold there. The Hilux is simplicity and reliability and resale value. That's what us the common people need. It gets the job done and takes you back home.
Great stuff Ryan. Love the variety. Personally, I'd love to see a review of the Jimny. They (along with the Dacia Duster) were all over in Iceland when I was there recently.
@@timanderson6111 European here, Dacia is the budget brand of Renault. The Duster is their subcompact SUV, it has an option for 4WD (developed by Nissan) and is a very capable and respected little offroader.
I feel like there is a market for this in the US. Not everyone wants all the touch screen, push button offroad do-dads. It is more capable I think than you give it credit for. With better tires, it would be able to do most of what anyone needs it to do. Pricepoints for the tacoma and others in the US market are just too damn high. This would be great for anyone who wants a "no BS", 4x4 like we used to get, way back when.
To be honest, this was way more fun to watch than your usual 'off-road test' videos. I believe this is what the majority would like to see more from your channel -- the actual 'long off-road drive' videos rather than watching a 'can this climb this short hill?' video every time. Thank you.
That's literally every other youtube channel that covers trucks at all. I like that this channel takes the time to show how power is distributed in various modern AWD and 4x4 systems. That one video where he shows Subaru's awd system actually does what's advertised on the box where Ford's just does nothing at all until the locking diff is engaged was an eye opener.
This is a review channel, not an " off-road lifestyle" one, so how are we going to compare one car to another without a common benchmark? However, videos like this are very welcome, of course.
"I averaged 30-32 MPG" - Did you re-calculate the MPG from the UK to the US one? Imperial gallon is 4.546 liter, while the US gallon is 3.785 liter, so 30-32 UK MPG equals 25-27 US MPG
Yeah the 2.8L Diesel is about 24-27 US MPG when on stock highway tires and unloaded with mixed driving. With rooftop tent, and 33" mild All-Terrains it gets as low as 19 MPG for off-road/city/highway speeds :- ).
I can easily get 27 us mpg if I drive legal speed, mixed. Stock size (265/65 - 17) but more of an all terrain type. Canopy and tools makes it weigh approx 2800-2900 kg. If you can't get 26 unladen at legal speeds something is wrong.
When you engage the rear locker you unfortunately disengage the front traction control ( which is really good on hilux) so choose visely when to use the locker!
Great content Ryan as always. As a fan of this channel, I had watched most of videos for last few years. The photography amazing for your channel. You read my mind about Suzuki Jemny. Eagerly waiting for that. Journalist like yourself can inspire the manufacturer to bring it to US. Thanks
I love that you reviewed a model we don't have here. Sometimes the rest of the world gets better offerings than we get in North America. I would love to see a Jimny review, those things are maneuverable little buggers.
About the Hilux performance ... its durability is also a key in offroad I guess. So you could probably attack some of the difficult sections with more momentum.
Yep. I got the 2.4L 6 speed manual single cab. Due to nature of SEA countries to overload it (I managed to load it up to 2 tonnes/4400lbs), it still capable enough and durable enough to hold its own for 6 years without issue apart of broken leafspring which is totally fair.
This is the truck that people who actually need a truck want. Simple, durable, capable. Put a set of 33 inch KO3s and it will get through anything a Raptor can get through and more because it's not the weight and size of a planet.
@@TimeMariner Actually they rock crawl in the Hilux in Australia... it's much more capable than what you see in this video. Put these tyres on a Raptor and try that grass hill...n result would be the same.
Im from WA state, and my wife is from Sweden. Last year in Göteborg sweden, i visited the VW, Audi, and Toyota dealerships. Saw the Amork and GR Hilux. I told my wife i will get one of these trucks when i retire here or when my daugjters start college over there(its free for them) i will get them a truck so i can use it on my annual visit to sweden.
Very nice review! It would be nice to let people choose which one they want. Although at $65K, everyone would probably go to the new platform. 30mpg in UK is about 25mpg in the USA. Imperial gallon is about 1.2 US gallon.
There is actually another version of the GR sport. This is the old one for some reason. Now, the Hilux has several other trim levels that are offroad focused, however, they still come on small tires and don't have a lift kit (with the exception of the GR). If you lift this thing and put bigger tires on it it's a beast! Regarding the ATRAC - if you engage the rear locked ATRAC turns off on the Hilux.
Aye. I have a much older diesel Hilux with the old school levers to lock in 4-lo and with a set of BFG KO2s will go anywhere I ever need to. Living in the Scottish Highlands it's a brilliant winter/snow combination. It has never once let me down, everything on it works and that's after abuse off road every day on the farm.
OK. So Toyota let Ryan loose in Wales. What did they expect? A white washing of the Hilux's abilities? Not in this lifetime. My work truck on my last deployment was a base model 2018 Hilux with a 2.5L four-cylinder gas engine. It was damn near perfect for light duty work. I loved that truck.
No 2.5L petrol engine in those Hiluxes. It should have been 2.7 (same as in Tacomas) that's the only petrol engine in that gen Hilux apart from the 4.0 which is rare.
I live in Tucson, Arizona, so I see Toyota Hiluxs all the time driving down the highway or parked at the shopping mall. With people coming up from Mexico to do some shopping or visiting family, they are a common sight in Arizona
Re: the 300 series in Europe: Here in Romania we are getting the LC 250 diesel 2.8 liter. The 300 series is not sold in Europe although some were imported in 2022 from Russia right before the war. You end up paying import fees though twice so they sell for around 150k euro!
The Duster has a rudimentary AWD system however it does have "4WD Lock" mode which allows you to split the power 50%-%50 front and rear. The only issue with this type of Haldex system is that in hardcore, sustained off-road, the rear coupling will overheat and you will go into 2WD until you turn the car off for a minute or more and let it cool. . .
@@DaciaProject Ive ridden in a first gen 1.5 4WD, it was a muddy climb to a mountain peak near my friend's town. It didnt overheat so I guess its robust enough for most conditions, not impossible though. I still think its way more capable than most SUVs, maybe comparable to Subarus.
In other markets, the Hilux can be had in GR-S trim which sort of competes with the diesel version of the Ranger Raptor. The Hilux also has a three row SUV counterpart in a form of a Fortuner.
"Thanks a lot, Volkswagen." Let’s not forget that nearly every other manufacturer of diesel passenger vehicles was also caught using cheating software. You said:
They get the same as all Europe which is different from Australian market. European is not wider as the Australian version. Also this is the older version. The new one should be wider.
Interesting. Your adventure to the UK to try out something we hoped would stack up to the reputation that it has was a flop. I was as excited about your opportunity as you were. I was prepared to ask, how much would it cost to ship one here? BUT, at those prices and the poor performance(tires beside the point)what you got here seems like a watered down version of what they offer us in the USA. Def. gives people perspective now. And yah, I think it would be fun for you to find other vehicles we do not have here in the USA and see if the hype matches the actual performance. Such as the Jimny. Thanks Ryan! Great camera work and editing.
Always found it interesting how so many tacoma owners drooled over this truck not considering it was a much more stripped down version of the Tacoma with heavier duty springs. The hilux was designed to be a mule, the Taco was meant to be an adventure vehicle.
Ryan, What a pleasant surprise. Personally I prefer the single cab Hilux Workmate they sell in Australia but any Hilux with a single cab, manual transmission and 2.7 petrol engine will do. Will you also be reviewing a GR Yaris?
It is always good and refreshing to see something from another markets. Test of Land Cruiser with that engine could be interesting and maybe test of something from ISUZU or Dacia could be nice if you can find some press wehicles while you are in UK.
Excellent test review, nice to see someone without the Toyota tinted glasses that we seem to get in Australian reviews. You should get down to Australia and test the Ford Everest Tremor that you don’t get in the US.
Thanks for this, it did a lot to satisfy my curiosity, particularly hearing an American perspective on the Hilux. I'd love to see you test drive a Jimny. Mahindra Thar would be interesting too.
100%, i own one of these and its just stuck on bits, only physical difference is the suspension (which isn’t lifted from standard) just mono-tube and its totally shit and most owners remove them. You can buy the arch extensions from toyota (full set) for £350 lol😅 and best bit is they where fitted on trucks in Ireland years before the GR Sport used them lol 😂 toyota love screwing over the UK.
Here in Europe, we don't have big roads like the US or big parking spaces**;** everything is narrow here. Owning a Raptor in Europe would be a headache. The Hilux is the best because of its simplicity, as you mentioned. You don't need fancy systems to go off-road all you need is locks and installing an ARB, for example, lock in the front this car goes literally everywhere.
Looks like it even has rear storage under the seats. This is what we in the U.S. had actually wanted, but instead, we got something totally different with the new Tacoma.
That is the old GR Sport 1, not the new UK version of the GR Sport 2.... I have just checked the DVLA database for the vehicle registration, and despite what he says that is the 2.4D engine, not the 2.8D... what is going on here?? Then.. 'of course I'm in England, this is a right hand drive truck..' YOU'RE IN WALES MATE!'
Great video. I think you should have loaded the bed with a ton of stuff like sheep, logs, etc. Then it would have been in its element and most likely would you been better off-road.
It will climb the motorcycle track with just Atrac. It works better than just the rear locker most of the time. Given that your tyre pressures are lowered appropriately for the kind of terrain you want to tackle. Although, all terrains will improve capability by a mile…
i would like to see off road testing LC79 or LC76 in your channel . i mean there is a lots of videos about it but i like to here your thoughts about those vehicles
OK great review but you need to test drive the Hilux GRS 3 available in South Africa and Australia to get a better understanding of the capabilities of this Hilux with the correct tyre and Suspension setup. Cheers.
Would love to see a Jimny review. Drove one in Iceland earlier this year (manual trans, 15hrs of driving total). Love it! But at 6'2 I am way too tall and had serious cramping in my foot after all that. Plus, the reciprocating ball steering vagueness is a bit sketchy on icy Icelandic roads. Regardless.... Id still buy it if they sold it here.
please do a Suzuki Jimny review. that was my first car and still have it to this day! Mine's a 1982 SJ410 pickup. drives awful and no ac but i love the thing and it's off road capabilities are way too awesome for what it is.

@@dan.h210 Correct. I guess the grass isn't always greener in someone elses yard. Sounds like the trucks here are superior in the areas we are concerned about like acceleration and offroad prowess. Not to mention the price too.
Why is the UK Roque look like the 2019 Rogue? The 2024 in Australia has wider track, difference suspension and more powerful engine. Also, latest news is the "new" Hilux will stick to this platform.
Just a note - this is not the Hilux GR Sport 2. This is the outgoing GR Sport, the new GR Sport 2 variant has not currently reached the UK shores as of yet (I have one on order) They won’t be in UK till January earliest for customer deliveries. The new GR Sport 2 is a lot more sporty and dakar rally inspired vs this one.
I live in Europe and always thought this hilly looked sooo much worse than the Tacoma. In the end this was designed for the main market in south east Asia
Youve tested a stock Hilux on road tyres and are surprised it couldn't go far off road.... Come to the Scottish Highlands. Loads of places to properly off road here. I have an old Hilux. No assists, just levers, a diesel engine and some BFG KO2s. Goes anywhere. Everything works. The tyres in the version you had here arent A/Ts as you alluded to. They're highway tyres and no use for wet grass.

But this Toyota hilux failed the Moose 🫎🫎 test,it's a serious setback for this kind of truck to miss this stability capability
No 2.5L petrol engine in those Hiluxes. It should have been 2.7 (same as in Tacomas) that's the only petrol engine in that gen Hilux apart from the 4.0 which is rare.
Wow, congratulations Ryan for making it international.
Hope you can review the LC300, Jimny, Ford Everest, and other Asean offerings.
Did you take into account that UK mpg is different from US mpg? Cos I think if you did, it would be some what worse than you presented here.
Correct!
Sometimes old school is cool. I like this; the looks, the power and overall vibe. Thanks for the review.
I live in Tucson, Arizona, so I see Toyota Hiluxs all the time driving down the highway or parked at the shopping mall. With people coming up from Mexico to do some shopping or visiting family, they are a common sight in Arizona
Try LC 250 with the diesel, to say what is the difference with the hybrid. It's the same 2.8 as in the Hilux.
Re: the 300 series in Europe: Here in Romania we are getting the LC 250 diesel 2.8 liter. The 300 series is not sold in Europe although some were imported in 2022 from Russia right before the war. You end up paying import fees though twice so they sell for around 150k euro!
We in Bulgaria have some importers that have 300 imported from middle east and around the same price.
I would love seeing you offroad test a Dacia Duster. Those come with 4WD and a 6 speed manual and they are very capable!
Try the 1.5 dci diesel! I have a modified one here in Romania.
They don't have Dusters to test them in the USA. He cannot do that. Unless he brings it from Mexico.
@@moonsapling The Duster excels due to it being a very light SUV. Subarus have CVTs. The Duster diesel manual is more capable than any Subaru. . .
Here in the UK a pick-up is classed as a commercial vehicle and is not really used as a personal car.
Over here super duty trucks are classed as commercial, and everybody drives them.
It’s my personal car
In other markets, the Hilux can be had in GR-S trim which sort of competes with the diesel version of the Ranger Raptor.
The Hilux also has a three row SUV counterpart in a form of a Fortuner.
"Thanks a lot, Volkswagen." Let’s not forget that nearly every other manufacturer of diesel passenger vehicles was also caught using cheating software.
You said:
Does the uk get an older version of the gr sport? The one in australia looks a lot different
They get the same as all Europe which is different from Australian market. European is not wider as the Australian version. Also this is the older version. The new one should be wider.
Good looking Hilux, probably better and stronger than the Tacomia.
This was a lot of fun to watch. I was in the UK and Ireland recently and I noticed a lot of Ford Ranger Raptors!
Hello, here in Argentina the GR Sport has a different engine with 224 hp, larger tires and widened fenders. Greetings from Córdoba, Argentina.
worth mentioning that the 2025 model has MTS and an updated infotainment.
That first hill climb try was awesome!
People buy it for realiability not drive dynamics which are awful compared to the Ranger/Raptor
Thanks for a proper review of the Hilux
The Hilux is sold in Mexico. Gas and Diesel.
*is it US or UK miles per gallon* ????
*30 UK mpg is 9.42L/100km, while 30 USA mpg is 7.84L/100km*
Would love to see it with some KO2's. Cool truck. Looks like it has more rear seat room than the Tacoma. Is it a bigger truck?
The Hilux is a little smaller than Tacoma.
Great content! Love your videos, would like to see any vehicle, global or local, thanks!
Great review and video footage.
Well, Mexico is part of North America and you can get it there. So only Canada and USA can't get it in the entire Continent
Fairpoint: I didn’t realize you could get them in Mexico.
Excellent test review, nice to see someone without the Toyota tinted glasses that we seem to get in Australian reviews. You should get down to Australia and test the Ford Everest Tremor that you don’t get in the US.
UK doesn't get the wider track and extended overfenders like the GR Sport in other markets?
It will - this isnt the GR sport 2 with the wide body. Its the outgoing GR Sport variant. New ones are due in January
@syedkashaf667 gotcha
That would be great, I do like to see more cars from different places!
Thanks for this, it did a lot to satisfy my curiosity, particularly hearing an American perspective on the Hilux. I'd love to see you test drive a Jimny. Mahindra Thar would be interesting too.
To be fair, it’s a very different vehicle to the Australian GR sport, this looks like a sticker pack.
Europe doesn't have have the rough working enviroment of Australia.Vehicles doesn't need bigger tyres etc.,so yes it is a sticker pack(a pricey one)!
@@strofimios Yes it does.
Would love to see more vehicles from around the world!
Very cool video! A 70 series video would be awesome.
Then.. 'of course I'm in England, this is a right hand drive truck..' YOU'RE IN WALES MATE!'
you are doing great job!
Great video. I think you should have loaded the bed with a ton of stuff like sheep, logs, etc. Then it would have been in its element and most likely would you been better off-road.
Super TOYOTA !!!!💪🏻🚜❤️🔥
It will climb the motorcycle track with just Atrac. It works better than just the rear locker most of the time. Given that your tyre pressures are lowered appropriately for the kind of terrain you want to tackle. Although, all terrains will improve capability by a mile…
i would like to see off road testing LC79 or LC76 in your channel . i mean there is a lots of videos about it but i like to here your thoughts about those vehicles
Love this review! Please do a hilux GR-S (Australian version).
OK great review but you need to test drive the Hilux GRS 3 available in South Africa and Australia to get a better understanding of the capabilities of this Hilux with the correct tyre and
Suspension setup.
Cheers.
16:00 when forward movement stops, best bet is to back up and try again with more momentum, instead of pushing buttons.
I wish toyota would release a new hilux that would actually compete with the raptor with rear coil springs + 400hp
Top of the line product.
What are the chances of the States getting the "Corolla pickup" the Corolla cross of the rav4.
I wish this go out on the US market.
There is an SUV called fortuner based on this platform.. i wonder if you could compare that suv with the suvs available in ur market like you did with tacoma it was a great review btw
You know down in Mexico we have tundra Tacoma and hilux, of course the most sold pickup from Toyota is the Hilux we get one called "chasis cabina"
Nice truck but seems expensive for what it is.
The GR sport doesn't really offer more in capabilities than the cheaper SR5..
As far as I know the price of £49000 includes the 20% sales tax in GB. In the most countrys of the world the prices includes the sales taxes.
@@dan.h210 Correct. I guess the grass isn't always greener in someone elses yard. Sounds like the trucks here are superior in the areas we are concerned about like acceleration and offroad prowess. Not to mention the price too.
Mega!! Good find sir!
What road is this?
Why is the UK Roque look like the 2019 Rogue? The 2024 in Australia has wider track, difference suspension and more powerful engine. Also, latest news is the "new" Hilux will stick to this platform.
Was the MPG in UK gallons, or US? Big difference 30 -> 25
Jimny please,i live in South Africa and own one but like to know your take on it.
I live in Europe and always thought this hilly looked sooo much worse than the Tacoma. In the end this was designed for the main market in south east Asia
I got so excited thinking we were getting a Hilux in the US
Youve tested a stock Hilux on road tyres and are surprised it couldn't go far off road....
I live in California and I’ve seen one driving around near my neighborhood. It’s too small for my needs, but seems like a nice little truck.
In the USA Tacoma off road now comes with plastic skid plate. Cost cutting at its best
Great reviewer. I love Toyota and Lexus. Please find and review the Toyota Rangga and HiAce. WE need these NOW in the USA in a base cargo trim so we can spec and build it out ourselves. Of course without the diesel engine. Ty
